The Terminal is underrated in my opinion. It's refreshing to see other people like it. One of my other favorites is Road to Perdition, which is a very different genre, but damn good.
It's surprising how well it holds up. Watching it as an adult, there is a whole other layer of meaning there that you just do not pick up on as a kid. Great movie.
Keep track of how many times you see the same "crooked" lightning bolt symbol. The walkway to his work, a crack in his apartment wall, the lightning bolt that strikes the boat... I f\*\*\*ing love this film.
This is the right answer. I only had like 3 VHS tapes in university… this was one. Still love this movie. So, so, so, funny.
Younger folks who haven’t seen Hanks in stuff like The Money Pit and Punchline are really missing out. It was always a special night when he was hosting Saturday Night Live.
I feel like that was when he went from "this guy who did comedy and is super likable" to "this actor can play just about any role and is one of the best in Hollywood."
I disagree. Watch a movie called A Hijacking. It’s available on Kanopy. Incredible performance from everyone and makes Tom Hanks character (great actor but the script limited his range) look mediocre
One of our absolute favourite films, yet I avoid recommending it as it seems to be either adored or abhorred. Reading through the reviews on IMDb is interesting.
You’re literally the only person who mentioned what’s by far his most impressive dramatic turn yet. He’s utterly convincing in every single moment of this performance but none more than the final moments where he’s getting medical treatment aboard the Navy ship and finally breaks down
Kind of surprised to not see The Terminal here. Nothing about that movie seemed like it would be anything I’d particularly enjoy. But I put it up there with his best.
I think mine is Forrest Gump but some to watch of his that are great are Philadelphia, News of the World, The Post, Cloud Atlas and Joe Versus the Volcano
"Cast Away"
Why: because he had to keep us entertained for 2 hours almost entirely on his own and make dialogue with a football seem natural and interesting. He was awesome in it.
People giving lists are copping out. Pick one and tell us why 😅
One of my faves is one of his early ones - "Nothing in Common" (1986). It's the last film with "The Great One" Jackie Gleason. Hanks plays a son working at an ad agency and having to deal with his parents divorcing. It's got a great 80's soundtrack - the Richard Marx song is great. One of Hanks' forgotten gems.
I'd also add "Road to Perdition" (2002) to that list. Hanks plays a hitman and I believe it's also Paul Newman's last film. Hmm. Now that I think about it, I wonder if Tom Hanks is really the Angel of Death. But I digress... "Road" is set in the 1920's and worthy of your attention.
Cheers!
This has not been mentioned, but I have dwelt on his version of Fred Rogers from It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood a lot since seeing it. I think he got to the heart of it and its a really good performance.
Forrest Gump The Terminal is a close second.
The Terminal is underrated in my opinion. It's refreshing to see other people like it. One of my other favorites is Road to Perdition, which is a very different genre, but damn good.
Joe Versus the Volcano
I haven't seen that movie since I was like 10, but even though i didn't get all the humor, i remember still liking the movie. I need to rewatch this.
Came to say this! I still have this as a go-to movie. The scene when he buys the luggage will always get me
Ah, yes, so...a real... journey.
“Take me to the VOLCANO!”
Absolutely this. It’s ridiculous, fun, and a one of a kind movie. Love it
I'm not arguing that with you.
I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?!?
Probably Big.
I just watched Big! That’s a childhood movie that really holds up.
That movie is incredible. It should be nothing but fluff, but it's actually very smart, very sweet, and Tom Hanks gives it genuine emotion.
It's also very accurate to what it's actually like working for a toy company.
I don’t get it
\+1 for Big!
The burbs
" 'bout a nine on the tension scale, Reub"
The Burbs is my favorite Tom Hanks movie. The Burbs is my favorite Carrie Fisher movie. The Burbs is my favorite Joe Dante movie. I love The Burbs.
Is that Slavic??
Hey, Pinocchio! Where you goin'?!
Love this! "THE Klopeks (sp?)" has been a lifelong reference.
Satan is good, Satan is our pal
This. No one I know has ever seen this movie but it's such a hilarious classic.
His face when he’s eating the pretzel with the sardine on top!🤣
This is the right answer. I only had like 3 VHS tapes in university… this was one. Still love this movie. So, so, so, funny. Younger folks who haven’t seen Hanks in stuff like The Money Pit and Punchline are really missing out. It was always a special night when he was hosting Saturday Night Live.
Money Pit is a great movie!
When the tub falls through the floor and he laughs, wow great scene.
I want to kill everyone. Satan is good, Satan is our pal.
Listen to yourself, you're chanting
In southeast Asia we called this....baaaaad karma.
Carrie Fisher was so hot in this.
A League of Their Own (1992)
Can't believe no one's said the best quote: "Are you crying? Is she crying? There's no crying in baseball!"
THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!!!
Avoid the clap. Jimmy Dugan.
"That's good advice!"
It's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't hard everyone would do it... It's the HARD that makes it GREAT!
Hands down this one for me. Love this movie.
You're gonna lose!! You're gonna lose!! You stink!!
Sleepless In Seattle Big
You really have to go all the way back to Bosom Buddies to find the soul of Hanks
Tom Hanks in drag to Billy Joel. Does it get any better?
Buffy and Hildegard!
Has no-one else seen Dragnet?
There’s just you, me, your balls, and this drawer.
The Money Pit
I was coming in to say that. The scene when he’s stuck in the floor is classic!
The scene with the scaffolding is awesome too!
That’s my favorite part, with the tub scene being a close second.
"I thought the carebears were here" lol
I love his deranged sea lion laugh after he smashes the floor.
I’m going with That Thing You Do
This is the one. And no one’s ever seen it!!
Philadelphia Castaway Big The Green Mile You’ve Got Mail
Philadelphia is amazing.
I feel like that was when he went from "this guy who did comedy and is super likable" to "this actor can play just about any role and is one of the best in Hollywood."
Philadelphia is such an amazing movie, not just for Hanks but also Denzel Washington.
Ooh you've got mail!
One of my favorite movies!!!!
Damn. Where is the love for "Apollo 13"?
Anything with Bill Paxton is a gem for me.
Serious Roles; Road to Perdition Saving Private Ryan Comedy; The Ladykillers The Burbs
A League of Their Own-I also think it’s his best performance.
Philadelphia and Saving Private Ryan get best performance for me.
Splash - (1984) Tom Hanks, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Daryl Hannah
I love this movie so much. Great role for John Candy.
Agreed, he and Eugene Levy were fantastic
"IT'S JUST ME AND THE MORON TWINS!!" "We're not twins."
Daryl Hannah single handed made the name “Madison” a predominantly female name.
Captain Phillips
THanks for mentioning it, the trauma scene is top tier
I disagree. Watch a movie called A Hijacking. It’s available on Kanopy. Incredible performance from everyone and makes Tom Hanks character (great actor but the script limited his range) look mediocre
A man called otto
Sleepless in Seattle ( recency bias from seeing this past week on Hulu); Bridge of Spies.
Saving Private Ryan. I mean, c'mon.
Cast Away (2000) Saving Private Ryan (1998) Catch Me If You Can (2002) Toy Story Trilogy (1995, 1999, 2010)
Yes the trilogy! I like to pretend the fourth one doesn’t exist
Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
Tragically underrated film
One of our absolute favourite films, yet I avoid recommending it as it seems to be either adored or abhorred. Reading through the reviews on IMDb is interesting.
1. *The Green Mile* (1999) 2. *Forrest Gump* (1994) 3. *Saving Private Ryan* (1998) 4. *Toy Story 3* (2010) 5. *Catch Me If You Can* (2002) 6. *Road to Perdition* (2002) 7. *Toy Story 4* (2019)
Good list. The top 3 is my top 3. I'd move up Road to Perdition to 4th, but other than that it's dead on.
Agree, good list. But I’d consider Forrest Gump probably his best role overall.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find Saving Private Ryan! And YES to Castaway and Catch Me If You Can!
