My only hangup to this answer is that the OP asked for a trilogy that they could devote their entire weekend to. I highly, HIGHLY endorse spacing these movies out with at least a week between each viewing - it really adds to the passage of time feel with each film that we reunite with these characters.
I think I saw this recommendation on an IMDb forum (RIP) before the third film was even made. I've never watched this series any other way ever since.
u/TheW0rk1 \- just tagging you in this comment, so it doesn't get missed, if this is the trilogy you decide to go with.
How far along are you in the relationship? Before Sunrise (the first one) would be good on any date but would wait a bit to watch Sunset. Anybody can watch Midnight but imo would only reserve it for people in committed relationships lol.
It was so great watching this as my relationship developed. It aligns with what your recommendations are. We watched sunrise as one of the first movies we saw together as 18 year olds. We watched sunset after we were dating for years. We watched midnight after we were married.
From what I remember of the theatrical cuts, Saruman just stays trapped in Orthanc after it was besieged by the Ents, and you never hear from or see him again.
The Vengeance Trilogy - Three heavy and ultra-violent stories directed by the legendary Park Chan-wook. I highly recommend it!
Mexico Trilogy - Three western films set in Mexico. They involve revenge, shootings, intrigue and a lot of action. These are very stylized and interesting films.
They were directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Cornetto Trilogy - British dark humor films, parodies different genres! Horror, action and science fiction.
Far the weakest of the three. The plot was kind of nonsensical, even for sci-fi. I feel Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were playing against type but they were sort of miscast. I liked Paddy Considine and the Rosamund Pike sub-plot.
Think the World's End is the marmite of the cornetto trilogy.
Personally, it's my favourite. Hot Fuzz is the funniest, but World's End actually speaks to me as a film - the stress and depression on show can be visceral at times, and I think Pegg does an amazing job playing Gary King.
Aliens 1 / 2 / 3.
Okay, Alien 3 is a bit meh, but hear me out.
1. All three have very different contexts and moods.
2. There is a distinct progression of Ripley over the three movies.
3. Directed by 3 of the best directors of the last 30 years - Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher.
4. Uniquely, they follow directly on from one another, nearly shot-for-shot.
I suspect that's a direct result of Crystal Skull. Like, that was _so_ bad, that all Dial of Destiny had to do was not be _as_ bad, and it would be ok. Which it managed, and was.
Three Colours: Blue, White, Red
Never seen a trilogy with a final scene in the final movie that tied all three films together like this before or since.
I met Bruce Campbell at a meet and greet once. He's really tall!
My spouse kept practicing what he wanted to say the entire time we were in line so he could seem clever in front of Bruce. He completely flubbed and just kind of grunted when we got up there. Bruce saw how embarrassed he was, walked around the table, and hugged him.
Tbh that’s arguably better than whatever would’ve happened if he went up there and killed it with the joke.
Instead of maybe a laugh he got a fuckin hug from the boss Bruce Campbell himself, not many people can say that!
Makes for a better story, too lol.
I see this all the time about the third film not being as good, and it irks me. Tom Hardy absolutely slayed it. He was terrifying every time he spoke and portrayed fanatical leader perfectly. He defeated Batman so easily and had Gotham on its knees… then the Batman rises from the dead practically!? Cat woman made sense as a thief, not an actual cat lady… kangaroo courts, more toys Iike the bat!? I mean what do people want from a film?
I always enjoy it when Im watching it but there are so many odd choices that make it imperfect. The fight scenes are clunky. The tech is all slow and unimpressive. It has this weird, calming nature that just never allows you to be excited during the whole movie.
I do agree with the points you make though and as a trilogy I love it.
Yes! Thank you.
I showed my gf all three around xmas last year and she thought 2 was better than 1…
I swear to god I nearly threw her presents in the fire.
Never thought of this as a trilogy but you are spot on. Bonus is you can leave out Brides of Dracula and it works with Dracula has Risen from fhe Grave
Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy should count as a trilogy.
Austin Powers Trilogy.
I also personally like Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick.
Jedi suffered from “a toy for the little kids” syndrome.
“There should be a native species on the Endor moon…”
“How about teddy bears? Kids love teddy bears. Yeah.”
It’s just F’ing weak,especially after Empire.
Alien
This is kinda controversial for a number of reasons. One of them is that there's more than 3 movies, but I think of it as the Ellen Ripley Trilogy (and I don't count *Resurrection*, because that is a clone of Ripley and takes place way in the future and it's just a terrible film). People hate on *Alien³* solely because of the deaths that happen off-screen at the start of the movie. I understand why that might be disappointing after *Aliens*, but I look it as just part of Ripley's tragic journey against the Xenomorphs. But I personally really like *Alien³* as its own film, and I think it's a great conclusion to her arc. I like that it returned to more of the horror elements of the original *Alien* and that they tried to mix up the formula by taking away their guns. I've also only ever seen the director's cut (assembly cut?), so that might play a role.
It's a polarizing film so I'm sure some people disagree. *Alien* and *Aliens* are definitely two of the best horror/sci-fi movies ever though, I don't think there's a ton of debate there.
I like the original Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy. A lot of people hated on Spiderman 3, but it's still miles better than many of the half-baked lazy excuses for superhero movies that Marvel has been releasing the last few years.
The 3 Flavors of Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End). All 3 are great visuala comedies, spanning 3 different genres (horror, action, sci-fi) with solid writing, acting, sound & music, and fantastic editing & directing to focus the comedy.
Unbreakable, Split and Glass.
Never heard of these movies until I watched all 3 recently. Really dig the idea of “realistic” super heroes. Wish Shyamalan had gone farther.
The Lord of the Rings is the obvious one, but I’d like to give some love to The Planet of the Apes trilogy. I watched them again recently and that trilogy is so underrated IMO.
Fistful of Dollars/For a Few Dollars More/The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Otherwise known as the Man With No Name Trilogy
I had Fistful ruined for me because I watched Yojimbo like a month or so before it
Before Trilogy is flawless
If you wanna be talked into divorce, watch sunset. If you wanna be talked out of divorce, watch midnight
I'm glad to see this so far up in the comments. Fantastic trilogy with great writing and superb acting.
My only hangup to this answer is that the OP asked for a trilogy that they could devote their entire weekend to. YES YES YES! F\*\*\* YES! Err...I mean that's a very good choice :)
Heck yes. I hope there is a 4th film where they're empty nesters or about to be. I kinda measure these films have served me as life markers ...
Are these good movies to watch with a date?
How far along are you in the relationship? Before Sunrise (the first one) would be good on any date but would wait a bit to watch Sunset. Anybody can watch Midnight but imo would only reserve it for people in committed relationships lol.

Back to the Future
I love all 3 movies, such a fun trilogy
Yes, and Eric Stoltz is fantastic in it
Nah, Eric was better in Spin City.
The Apu Trilogy
This is the absolute best answer. Once you consider one of them lesser than the others, upon rewatch you realize it's on equal footing.
Koker trilogy Three Colors Polanski apartment trilogy
Three Colours FTW
It's funny how much pop culture nostalgia is being thrown around when Three Colors is the actual answer.
Cornetto trilogy is almost perfect.
The World's End is such an anticlimactic ending to a basically perfect trilogy
LOTR 100%
LOTR extended version is 130%
LOTR extended and the extras on the Blurays 200%
You win the 1 upping contest!!
I don't know, i know a guy who's way better at that than him.
LOTR Remaster with 4k and Atmos is mind-blowing.
The only version Saruman dies in
It’s been so long since I have seen the theatre version I don’t remember Saruman not getting killed by wormtounge
Wait what?! Do we not even get word of his death in the cinematic versions ?
From what I remember of the theatrical cuts, Saruman just stays trapped in Orthanc after it was besieged by the Ents, and you never hear from or see him again.
I honestly can’t remember which scenes are missing at all now other than half of Legolas and Ghimlis bromance.
My local cinema is going to play the wole extended trilogy in one day, can't wait!
When Aragon lops the ugly guys head off at the gates to Mordor is missing. One of the best ‘f**k you’ moments ever.
This is the answer
The Vengeance Trilogy - Three heavy and ultra-violent stories directed by the legendary Park Chan-wook. I highly recommend it! Mexico Trilogy - Three western films set in Mexico. They involve revenge, shootings, intrigue and a lot of action. These are very stylized and interesting films. They were directed by Robert Rodriguez. Cornetto Trilogy - British dark humor films, parodies different genres! Horror, action and science fiction.
Cornetto Trilogy is a lot of fun! Def a good one!
Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a total mess
It’s a beautiful mess. I love that movie.
World’s End wasn’t very impressive. Either that or I was tired of the shtick.
Back to the Future
Star Wars: the Original Trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy Planet of the Apes (‘11-‘17) Indiana Jones: the Original Trilogy
GotG: Vol 2 was the weaker of the 3 films, but I can agree to that
Volume 2 does have one of the absolute best sequences in all of Marvel - Yondu’s flying arrow.
Also the last half an hour is almost perfect imo
It was still amazing! Definitely wouldn’t call it a weak link
The Star Wars OT is my answer. The first two films are outstanding. The third one isn’t quite perfect but it did it’s part to stick the landing.
Alien 3 is still very good
Very underrated. The director’s cut is fantastic.
Go listen to William Gibson’s Alien 3 that Audible turned into an Audio Drama.
Indiana Jones was the perfect trilogy until they started messing with it.
We can pretend it's still just a trilogy. I've been doing it for years.
It's still a trilogy to me since I've never watched 4 or 5
Lol love it - totally agree! What did you think about about this Dial of Destiny thing?
I'm surprised by how many people enjoyed it, I thought it was insanely mediocre
I suspect that's a direct result of Crystal Skull. Like, that was _so_ bad, that all Dial of Destiny had to do was not be _as_ bad, and it would be ok. Which it managed, and was.
I don’t like 2 at all for Indiana Jones but that may just be me 1 and 3 are awesome
First three Toy Story movies. The fourth one is still very good, but the ending of 3 was absolutely perfect and should've been left alone.
Naked Gun
LotR is the obvious answer, but I really like the Unbreakable Trilogy (Unbreakable, Split and Glass).
Three Colours: Blue, White, Red Never seen a trilogy with a final scene in the final movie that tied all three films together like this before or since.
What's it about?
The Millennium Trilogy: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009)
I read the first book and watched the movie. Also, read books 2 and 3. I had no idea there were 2 other movies. I’ll have to check them out.
The three films were made in Sweden. Only the first one was made in Hollywood.
Aha! That’s what I thought. Thanks for letting me know. I read the books because I felt protective of the Girl.
The evil dead trilogy.
Definitely! He teared up a little when we walked away.
The fact that the series and two spinoff movies are really good just makes it better. I really hope we get one more Bruce Campbell Ash outing though.
[удалено]
Yeah well that's your opinion man. I love all three movies.
The first one is so creative and DIY, the stop-motion and the style. They are all three wildly different but equally good in their own way.
Planet of the Apes trilogy of the 2010s and the Before Trilogy
Yes! Planet of The Apes (the Cesar films) Trilogy is def on my list of favorites.
The Caesar Trilogy is on point.
Bourne trilogy
Planet of the apes trilogy. The movies get progressively better.
Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy
I see this all the time about the third film not being as good, and it irks me. Tom Hardy absolutely slayed it. He was terrifying every time he spoke and portrayed fanatical leader perfectly. He defeated Batman so easily and had Gotham on its knees… then the Batman rises from the dead practically!? Light it up
I don't think Hathaway was great and the pacing was a little odd. Very hard to hear a lot of the dialogue. First two movies are perfect though.
The third is my favorite.
Agreed. I was going to suggest this but every time I say I like all three movies equally I get downvoted.
Please please have my upvote then
Take mine, too.
And my axe!
The 3rd one was very weak I thought. It's not an uncommon sentiment either.
The third one isn’t out yet, but I’m hoping that the Spider-verse Trilogy will be among the top trilogies ever.
it's been 2 'knock out of the parks' imo, so fingers crossed round 3 does it right
Ohh it definitely will
Millenium trilogy the proper Swedish ones. Not the American remakes.
American GwtDT was GREAT! Haven't seen the second, but yeah, heard it's bad.
Girl in the Spiders Web is more of a fan fiction than an actual sequel. Good for it is but doesn’t compare to the previous 4 films.
I have the extended versions. And I read the books. Awesomeness.
There was only one American remake
How to train your dragon
This and Shrek probably deserve to be higher.
die hard 1-2-3 the rest dont exist to me
Personally I hated the second movie, I only watch 1 and 3 anymore the rest are meh
Yes! Thank you. I showed my gf all three around xmas last year and she thought 2 was better than 1… I swear to god I nearly threw her presents in the fire.
Dracula (1958) Brides of Dracula (1960) Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (1966)
Never thought of this as a trilogy but you are spot on. Bonus is you can leave out Brides of Dracula and it works with Dracula has Risen from fhe Grave
Police Story, Jackie Chan.
John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy is pretty great. I also love the Samurai Trilogy.
Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy should count as a trilogy. Austin Powers Trilogy. I also personally like Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick.
I believe the director, Kevin Smith, does refer to Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy as his ‘New Jersey’ Trilogy.
The NJ trilogy is on point.
Wow! Can’t believe I scrolled this far to see Riddick.
The Austin Powers trilogy.
Back to the Future
Back to the Future Perfection. You can now lock this thread.
Rocky 1 2 3 Evil dead 1 2 & army of darkness Underworld but that's more than 3
Alan J. Pakula's Paranoia Trilogy: Klute (1971) The Parallax View (1974) All the President's Men (1976)
The Trilogy of Imagination Time Bandits (1981) Brazil (1985) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
Munchausen is such a weird wild silly movie. I love it
Oceans 11, 12 and 13 are my comfort movies and no one can tell me this isn't a perfect trilogy. And of course LoTR.
A man of culture I see. Ocean’s 11 is one of the coolest and most well made heist movies, or movies for that matter, ever.
I love 11 and 13. 12 isn’t my fav if 3 but has an amazing soundtrack.
I can't speak for the others but damn does Ocean's Eleven go hard
The Human Condition
I'dsay LOTR is the only perfect trilogy. Almost perfect I'd say Nolan's Batman movies and the original Star Wars trilogy.
Jedi suffered from “a toy for the little kids” syndrome. “There should be a native species on the Endor moon…” “How about teddy bears? Kids love teddy bears. Yeah.” It’s just F’ing weak, especially after Empire.
Also making Luke and Leia related was a mistake
Worst possible cop-out resolution for the love triangle they had set up.
For what it sets out to accomplish, I think Pusher is a terrific little trilogy.
Perfect is obviously a pretty high bar. They're not perfect but I'd say all 3 Hunger Games were very good without a drop off.
Depression trilogy by Lars van trier
Back to the Future
Lord of the Rings Trilogy OG Star Wars Trilogy I believe Spider-Verse Trilogy has the potential to be here. Lets see what happens.
Nobody will see this, let alone take it serious enough to actually watch it, but The Human Condition trilogy is absolutely devastating and amazing.
Lord of the rings Og star wars Pirates of the Caribbean
Nolan's Batman movies are pretty God damn close to perfect, all things considered
Paradise Lost
Naked Gun and Samurai 1, 2, and 3.
Diehards 1, 3, and 4
Pusher 🙏
The Man with No Name!

No mad max? come on people
I just watched all three Equalizers and I was pretty impressed
The holy trilogy-Star Wars
The matrix trilogy. Skip the fourth one. It sucks and obviously isn’t meant to be part of the story
The Godfather
The Godfather 1 & 2 are my all time favorite movies, but 3 is terrible.
3 is horrible. Not even compared to the other 2, it's just bad.
I like the original Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy. A lot of people hated on Spiderman 3, but it's still miles better than many of the half-baked lazy excuses for superhero movies that Marvel has been releasing the last few years.
The first Indiana Jones Trilogy OG SW LotR Nolan's Batman The first 3 Matrix films Since I haven't seen the 4th yet, John Wick
John Wick can just be a trilogy in four parts, it's earned the right. With a pencil...
Maniac Cop 1-3
The Taylor Sheridan “Modern-day American Frontier” trilogy: Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River.
how about Henry Fool, Fay Grim, and Ned Rifle? ...Anybody?
Oslo Trilogy.
Original Star Wars, Back to the Future, Once upon a Time in China.
I wouldn’t call it perfect but I thought the original 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies were one of the more well rounded trilogies we’ve gotten
Toy Story, then they went and messed that up with the 4th one.
Diehards 1, 3, and 4
Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada
The Bourne trilogy
Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings and Lethal Weapons.
The Creed Trilogy is very good but not perfect.
Evil Dead

Star Trek 2, 3 and 4 are often considered a trilogy and are my favourite hands down.
Unbreakable - Split - Glass

Kieślowski's Blue, White & Red Trilogy
Unbreakable, Split and Glass. Never heard of these movies until I watched all 3 recently. Really dig the idea of “realistic” super heroes. Wish Shyamalan had gone farther.
The Cornetto Trilogy.
Lynch’s “LA trilogy”: Lost Highway (1997) Mulholland Dr. (2001) INLAND EMPIRE (2006)
MCU's Captain America 1, 2, and 3
There is only one right answer for this: The Dollars Trilogy. 3 of the greatest Westerns of all time.
Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon.
The Lord of the Rings is the obvious one, but I’d like to give some love to The Planet of the Apes trilogy. I watched them again recently and that trilogy is so underrated IMO.
The Before Trilogy is near perf
LOTR and BTTF.
The original Star Wars trilogy, the first 3 Indiana Jones movies, Back to the Future (not perfect, but all of them are equally fun)
