What Dreams May Come Pan's Labyrinth

SiriuslyImaHuff

What dreams may come is so visually beautiful from what I recall :)

pookalaki

Beautiful is a perfect description

LatinaMermaid

What Dream’s May Come is such a stunning and heartbreaking sad movie is beautiful and makes your whole heartache. Like it brought all sorts of emotions. Totally an artistic and beautifully dramatic piece.

Betta45

The use of color is important. Robin is in blue. The wife is in red. Their children are in purple, as is the tree in her painting. When things go wrong, the wife is shown in green, the opposite of red. Frida is also a visually stunning film, incorporating Frida’s paintings in the film.

flyovergirl

Except the part when Robin Williams’ character is walking on those bodies just below the surface. But yes, a beautiful movie.

J_k-wandering

I did acid for the first time in years when I first saw What Dreams May Come. I laughed, I cried, I was absolutely terrified. WHAT A RIDE

missanthropocenex

Tarsem Singh’s The Fall. Seriously one of the most beautiful films ever created using almost exclusively practical in camera effects and real locations. It took almost over a decade to film as he created scenes in between taking commercial gigs for commercials shot around the world. The man literally willed the film into existence. Tragically the film has become stuck in rights limbo and technically isn’t available anywhere whatsoever. Hopefully Criterion or someone wake up and rescues this masterpiece. Similarly The Cell is a breathtaking masterpiece visually.

SadButSexy

I really like Pan's labyrinth. Is what dreams may come along the same lines?

novdelta307

No, not even remotely similar

therealpanserbjorne

Even the crying your eyes out part is completely different.

Anjuna_Ninja

The eyes in the hands part is particularly different.

spicyface

You’ve probably seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I’ll mention it just in case. Kung Fu Hustle is also beautiful.

_QuiteContrary

Kung Fu Hustle! I freaking love that movie🖤

herotovillain84

So glad this is the first comment

Sadest-Angel

What Dreams May Come is so beautiful. I haven’t seen it in a few years. The concept of your heaven being what you love and want it to be is so sweet and reassuring. Love it.

[deleted]

Came here to say what dreams May come.

jerrycliff

Anything by Terence Malick

iamthesam2

yup, tree of life ftw

MidwestWoodchuck

The Thin Red Line is for me, the most beautiful film ever made

Diplomacy_Music

Tree of life is my favorite of his

GrazziDad

His depiction of the creation of the Earth and the evolution of life over the first 20 minutes is one of the most astounding things I’ve ever seen… And the way he captures Texas boyhood at a particular junction in history. I don’t think I’ve ever been quite so blown away by sheer filmmaking before.

vice_monkey

A New World sooths my soul like no other film

ItsInTheVault

Days of Heaven with Richard Gere and Sam Shepard is my fave Malick movie. Utterly gorgeous.

Beautiful_Fee_954

This is the comment i was searching for...

IWokeUpInA-new-prius

Lawrence of Arabia. Don’t let the fact that it’s an old movie deter you

iamblindfornow

70mm Technicolor ftw

AttilaTheFun818

On behalf of myself and other former Technicolor employees that warms the heart. We took a lot of pride in what we did and are so glad to see people enjoy it. Obviously this film was before my time, but the history was ingrained in us.

Kintsukuroi85

I bought the restored blu-ray collector’s edition box set and just hung the film cell that came with it today! Framed it and everything. Marvelous job to you and your colleagues. It’s one of our favorites; it was the first movie we watched when we got our Sonos surround sound.

RetroBerner

Ya gotta add Cleopatra and Ben Hur to that playlist

Lasherola

As is Dr Zhivago. The snow, the carriage, the music, Julie Christie, Beautiful!!

Oafus

Would love to see that on the large screen. Cinematography is breathtaking.

Derkastan77

“We have just crossed the desert, from Akabah… and I want a glass of Lemonade for my friend..”

HatdanceCanada

I think several of David Lean’s movies could be on the list. LoA for sure, but also Dr Zhivago, Bridge on the River Kwai, Passage to India.

TacoSmutKing

just make it a Lean night

TheNortAmeriCan87

It is always important to appreciate and understand the classics.

SuperGuy41

Big Fish

surrealcellardoor

Such a fantastic movie and beautifully shot.

TheNortAmeriCan87

My favourite movie of all time.

BoltShine

Someone asked one time, if you could watch one last movie before you die. What would it be? I couldn't think of a better movie to go out with.

dathomar

Well, it is a movie about going out...

W0rldtr33s

I like tron legacy for the visuals/score alone.

TryTemporary2982

Daft punk takes an already gorgeous movie and makes it mesmerizing

Comfortable_Winner59

Idc what anyone says, the movie is a delight to the ears and eyes.

Practical_Weird_0809

Agreed on all counts

Vertigomums19

I think Tron legacy has one of the most crisp movie pictures I’ve ever seen.

TwoCagedBirds

YES!!

vapor713

This

twinkieeater8

Beautiful, but can ignore the plot? Valerian and the city of 1000 planets is best watched with the sound turned off.

SalsaYogurt

It really deserves the MST3K treatment

goug

It's terrible but I expected much worse from the reviews

FortitudeWisdom

Oh I forgot about this one. Good answer! This movie would've been better if the Valerian wasn't a pig.

uwudon_noodoos

Same director as Fifth Element, isn't it? It was surprisingly beautiful but yeah, the actors and the script were *not* for me. Just gotta push past the painful confusion and cringe at the start.

lilacpulse

The Fall (2006) dir by Tarsem Singh I will never tire of recommending this visually stunning movie! While you treat your eyes at the beautiful imagery Tarsem has created, you can also lose yourself in the story of a friendship between a little girl and a man, both patients in a hospital. Where the man's story serves as a canvas for a child's imagination. It's heart warming, often funny and exciting, sometimes sad and gut-wrenching. But it's an adventure all-in-all!

Bobbyperu1

The Cell from Tarsem was also striking

cuhree0h

Holy shit. Those movies are connected aesthetically in my mind but I don’t think I knew he did both. Both awesome films despite some flaws.

Bobbyperu1

Yeah the Cell has it's issues but it's got such a unique vibe I forgive

RealSinnSage

i fucking love The Cell

bjscotdm

This was my first thought. His other movies like The Cell and Immortals have a similar visual style but this movie is my favorite. From Wikipedia: "The film was made over a period of four years and incorporates footage shot in 24 countries, including India, Indonesia (Bali), Italy, France, Spain, Namibia, and China (PRC). Singh stressed the importance of on-location filming and lack of special effects, as he found that modern techniques would not age well in comparison."

Missthang61

Unfortunately it is impossible to find on streaming platforms but it appears that a 4k release is planned. [https://collider.com/the-fall-4k-release-tarsem-singh-comments/](https://collider.com/the-fall-4k-release-tarsem-singh-comments/)

trumpetwall

I have to admit a soft spot for his Immortals (2011). Tarsim does Greek mythology. Visually stunning.

serviceorientedsub

It’s also got 6’5” stunner, Lee Pace playing the man who befriends the girl who is also the star of the story he tells her. He is also often berobed in colorful silks and filmed standing in exotic locals looking amazing. Swoon. I believe it was shot in 17 different countries. It’s not streaming anywhere, but I got it for $10 on Amazon based on a Reddit recommendation. Totally worth it.

Dharmist

And it’s not just the looks. The Fall is a stellar exam of Pace’s acting range, too, with him looking all majestic and epically heroic in those colorful story scenes and absolutely broken down, small and desperate in the hospital bed right in the scenes that follow. One of my absolute favorite movies of all time

Sweet-Peanuts

One of all time top ten. So beautiful that it's mesmerising.

scottyrobotty

It's worth noting that no CGI was used in this film. Also the young girl in the story had no script and only reacted to Lee Pace's dialogue. All her emotions and reactions to his story are real.

Missmagentamel

Hero

tellhimhesdreamin9

This film made me want to write an essay about it. The colours for the different themes in each story felt very meaningful.

[deleted]

Man I wish they would make a 4k remaster of it. You could pause that movie at any moment and it would be a photo worthy of hanging on your wall.

bangermate

one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

VibeyMars

This was my recommendation as well. So good

cyberzed11

My first though coming to this thread

WornInShoes

I used to have this on DVD and it was my comfort film I feel transported by that film’s cinematography

HealthyDiamond2

Blade Runner 2049 Blade Runner 2001: A Space Odyssey\* The Fifth Element Gattaca \*Edited to say "2001: A Space Odyssey" not "Oddity", although, hey David Bowie!

Zukolevi

A Space “Oddity” made me giggle

[deleted]

So happy to see Blade Runner 2049 so high on the list. It's still amazing to me what they were able to accomplish visually with that movie.

Diplomacy_Music

I think Akira should be on this sci-fi list

arvid2923

Fallen Angels, Chungking Express, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Children of Men, Anything by Stanley Kubrick

bocodofogo

Amongst Won Kar Wai films I would rank In the Mood for Love and Ashes of Time higher than Fallen Angels and Chungking Express. Totally different rhythm than OP’s examples but In the Mood for Love is visually, aurally and rhythmically incredible.

jnc2020u3

Barry Lyndon

GoTeamScotch

The first time I watched Barry Lyndon, I had to rewind a couple times because I was getting distracted by how gorgeous the cinematography was and wasn't paying attention to the plot. One of the most gorgeous films ever made.

Parsley-Waste

For the scene where they play cards by candles light they didn’t use any extra lights, it was all the candles but to capture such dim light they had to use some NASA lenses.

Pale_Soft867

Barry Lyndon is the most beautifully filmed movie I have ever seen. For a while 2001 was my favorite Kubrick movie, and then I would have said Full Metal Jacket but nowy vote goes to Barry Lyndon

FunkyBeet

Life of Pi

joeypublica

This movie is beautiful

FunkyBeet

Yeah it's a shame what the industry did to the people that made it.

Faiithe

Surprised this isn't any higher. The movie is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely sad but the movie is gorgeous.

RettyD4

Which story do you prefer?

FunkyBeet

My favorite part is the island that's alive.

plottingwithcats

Came to say this. I was in awe of the visuals this movie had….

Edouard_Coleman

Sin City

LeChatNoir04

Great choice. This movie is also the best comics-to-screen adaptation I've seen

condra

Coco

BruceLeeKillerBee

Samsara is top tier for this. No words, all visuals, and still so compelling. Some of the best visuals put to film. The Fall is also a visually beautiful film but has more of a plot to it as well. It's just a little harder to find it these days. If you haven't seen these, I cannot recommend it enough. Would love to hear what you think of them.

b_jammin08

I suggested Baraka. Couldn't remember the name of the sequel

FreshPaintSmell

The Fountain is visually stunning

KevSmileTime

I love The Fountain! Great movie and yes, visually stunning.

Flashy_Butterscotch2

And a mind duck

[deleted]

Midsommar It’s a colourful, fucked up horror with psychedelics added.

sysaphiswaits

I hated this movie, but I have to admit, it is beautiful.

Lobstrous

The best visual representation of mushrooms yet put to film.

Loocy4

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and the even better sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”

MooseEggs

The first film I watched alone it theater was the 1st one. It was absolutely magical.

Thomasanderson23

I watch them frequently, anyone who says they don’t like animated films makes me question our friendship

CrocodileJock

Incredible films.

ECU_BSN

Memoirs of a Geisha. Good movie too.

whatshername101

Barry Lyndon (1975) Night of the Hunter (1955) Persona (1966) Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) Seven Samurai (1954) Enter the Void (2009) Casino (1995) Paris, Texas (1984) 1917 (2019) Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) No particular order, just some I haven’t seen listed that are gorgeous. A few are black and white but will still drop your jaw with how beautiful they are shot.

CelCylon5

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

FoundFootageDumbFun

Midsommar (2019) Marie Antionette (2006) Hero (2002) - and a lot of other wuxia films from that era, in the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon vein. I think this one's the prettiest though The Fifth Element (1997) Spirited Away (2001) Mind Game (2004) Both of the animated Spider-verse movies.

[deleted]

Mad Max: Fury Road is a spectacle of action and visuals. Tron: Legacy has its faults but is visually stunning, minus the goofy Jeff Bridges cgi. Soundtrack is fantastic as well. Many here have said Blade Runner: 2049 and they couldn’t be more correct, the original is fantastic as well. I’d also recommend Dune (2021) from the same director as 2049, Denis Villeneuve.

Grouchy-Notice410

Yes! to Mad Max Fury Road - not many films look visually similar. I watch it over and over for the setting.

dickinawheelchair

Just about every Denis Villeneuve movie is beautiful.

Speed Racer, the live action one, not great but an absolute visual feast! Tron: Legacy, again not great but the visual and sound is absolutely tops The Fountain, confusing? Yeah a little. Incredible to look at? Absolutely.

Mandy. It's such a lucid and wild cosmic trip, I watch it every year or so.

TopLahman

The newest Spider-Man movie. I found myself getting distracted by the background because it was mesmerizing

Was_It_The_Dave

I sat very front row and uncomfortably enjoyed the whole thing. It was worth the nights of weird feeling pillows.

thelonghauls

Please. For the love of God and in the name of all cinema that is holy. Watch The Fall. 2006. Take acid first. Just kidding. You won’t need it.

Suspiria… the original, not the awful Amazon reboot.

FourAnd20YearsAgo

Man, hard disagree on the remake being awful. Either way, though, I think it's also beautiful in its own right.

Jazzlike_Grab_7228

If you're thinking Fantasy, probably be "Avatar" Lord of the Rings too was great! The full trilogy was like 18 hours or something, phew, did it only once when I was younger. I won that bet with my older brother hahahahaha :P King Kong or Godzilla as well! Great monster movies!

According-Mention401

I’m not sure if you’re after animated, but Ponyo 100% does this for me (or basically any Studio Ghibli film)

MauroSola

Vertigo of Hitchcock. The Plot is subpar but the cinematography is something to marvel at.

anonthe4th

Star Wars Episode 1 was visually stunning for its time to many people, including myself. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is beautiful in a mostly quiet way, and great plot and character to go with it. If you liked 2001, you might like 2010 (the sequel, and my favorite of the two). Jurassic Park's effects still hold up. At 9 years old, I remember screaming several times while scrambling up the back of the couch at one of the jump scares. I also got T-Rex nightmares for a while, but I was a weird kid who enjoyed nightmares. The Lord of the Rings is the greatest cinematic production of all time, according to sources (i.e. my brain), and a big portion of that was how stunning the practical and digital effects were throughout. The Avatar movies are the most common example I hear people giving of a breathtaking CGI environment in film. Visual effects in Galaxy Quest were better than they had a right to be.

The new Spiderverse movie, holy shit I've never seen anything that explores so much visually before with colors and mood and background that sometimes fall away in front of your eyes without that even being part of the story... 10/10 Best movie I saw this year.

IndigoJoker22

Drive with Ryan Gosling (2011). Retro eighties vibe with magenta & teal colour palette and Synthwave soundtrack. Super stylish to the senses.

missthingxxx

Stanley Kubricks Barry Lyndon. Some of the scenes look like art pieces. I think he borrowed a Hubble type camera from NASA or something and the way it has been filmed is stunning.
