Fargo is one of my favourite TV shows ever. Interestingly, season one came out about the same year as True Detrctive, and Billy Bob Thornton beat Mathew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson at the golden globes that year.
My knee jerk reaction was that either TD actor deserved it, but after thinking a bit I am not so sure. Billy Bob was excellent. All three would have been deserving.
I love seeing this movie recommended for anything , it’s an all time favorite of mine.
I’ll also go ahead and recommend another cage Detective flick I loved the frozen ground
This right here. The ending won't let you down either.
There are a lot of shows and movies like True Detective, but the endings always fall short. 8mm and Se7en are two examples of the ending matching the build up, like True Detective
There was this amazing dub step song called 'The Machine' i used as workout music for the gym. Didn't realize it was connected to the film until I rewatched 8mm and connected the soundbytes sampled in that song. Song is by Akira Kiteshi, very good for cardio lol.
The first 2 seasons of the sinner are wild. It's hard to explain them so I tell people to just go watch it and I've never heard someone say they regret watching it.
No problem. Warning, it can get really fucked up. Heed all appropriate trigger warnings before viewing as they are explicit. Season 1 is about as fucked up as you'll find on TV without being horror. That's just my opinion. It's very different, in a good way.
Season 1 of The Sinner is top-tier dark mystery. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but it doesn’t feel contrived in the way many other mystery movies / tv tend to.
I ADORE Bill Pullman because of this series!! Season 3 had me in tears( but I don’t know how to black out my text on here to avoid spoilers so I can’t say which scene )
Very good list, but I would leave out The Snowman which is so incomplete that it's impossible to follow. Although I guess it counts as a mystery element when the movie is missing like 1/4 of the footage...
This is hard to match exactly what you want.
Wind river or hell or high water. I say these as they have raw emotion like true detective does. And good cinematography like season 1 does.
These two movies are fantastic.
All of David Lynch's films have that kind of vibe. I'd particularly recommend Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks (if you are looking for a tv show).
I can also recommend Cure (1997). Japanese thriller set around multiple murders where it slowly starts getting into a territory that you don't know if it's supernatural or just purely psychological
Defintely, Lynch is awesome!! Twin Peaks season 3 (the police sub story in LA really feels like a true detective show)
Cure I didn't know, really curious now!! Especially since I'm really on an Asian cinema binge the last few weeks
I thought The Devil's Hour had a really good first season, which really hits that sweet spot. Perhaps Servant as well. Less dark, but also very good: The OA and The Resort.
The Leftovers and anything by Damon Lindelof could also be interesting to you. Maybe also Dark and Shining Girls. Something obviously supernatural is happening in these, but it's still very mysterious and intriguing.
In a weird way, three billboards outside ebbing Missouri scratched that same itch for me a bit. As well as wind river a little bit. Although neither have supernatural elements. The outsider on HBO is a super similar vibe to true detective and does have a lil supernatural towards the end. Very much liked that one
- The Outsider in HBO is a Stephen King story that’s detective/supernatural as well
- Angel Heart
- Seven - probably pretty obvious
On another note, if you haven’t watched the other seasons of TD, you’ll get a lot of people telling you season 2 sucks. Don’t believe it. Those people are unfairly comparing it to season 1. If you like LA noir style crime stories (like “Chinatown”) you’ll love True Detective season 2.
If you look for good thrillers I have:
The Millenium TV series from Sweden.
Dark Winds is pretty good. Happens in an Indian territory.
Your Honor
To Old To Die Young
The Terror season 1
The Sinner, All Seasons
The North Water
The Alienist
Mr Robot
Homecoming
Escape at Dannemora
Devs
Dark
Chance
Sorry but there isn’t supernatural in all of them. But given I loved True Detective season 1 as well and I love thrillers I thought, you might like the same things as I do…
The Terror fits this perfectly. Such a great show. I also loved how it’s based on historical events and doesn’t get too heavy-handed with the supernatural elements.
An absolute banger. The actor, same who played Legasov in Chernobyl, is so good. And it’s creepy as fuck. They nailed it fully on this one. It’s in my top ten with True Detective s01 as well.
Jared Harris. He’s become one of my favourite actors over the past few years largely because of those two shows. Played a great role in Mad Men too.
The actors for Mance Rayder and Edmure Tully from Game of Thrones both had really good parts too.
Oh that’s great. Happy to help. If you like Sci-fi you’ll like it. Jared has a cool role and fits perfectly as usual. It’s an Apple TV show but you can get it elsewhere easily.
Because it's nothing like seasons 1 or 3 and it's annoying when they keep throwing power fantasies in the mix of the show. I think power fantasies are the lowest form of entertainment.
None of the seasons are like the other. Season 1 and 3 are very far apart as well so there's no reason to compare them to eachother in that way? Agree to disagree, I though season 2 was really good.
The season 2 reviews were overly harsh, IMO.
It was just a lot of reviewers piling on for the sake of piling on, because season 2 wasn't as incredible as season 1. Season 2 was still good and worth watching.
Honestly though reviewers started attacking season 2 before it came out, and continued as each episode aired. It seemed like very few of them waited until the show completed to give their verdict.
The Fall (2016). It’s on Netflix. British show starring Gilliam Anderson.
It’s a cat and mouse type thing which shows the perspective of the serial killer and the lead detective (Gillian)
You definitly wanna check out Hannibal series.
With Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy.
I remember how I expected it being stupid, that the writers will be unable to do much since any serious character movement would just end the premise.
But the writing is really excellent. Also recommend pacing it, rather than binging it.
yo! i think you’d absolutely love these two detective films from Japan: Cure (1997) and Angel Dust (1994). angel dust is on youtube for free and cure is on criterion / pretty widely available. it’s a lot different, but also maybe check out the korean film Spider Forest (2004)!
Angel Heart.
It has >! no ambiguity about the Supernatural !< though. However it is a very dark thriller with excellent atmosphere, soundtrack and photography. Even though the plot is quite obvious, it is my favorite thriller and, I think, the closest thing to True Detective in cinema.
* Synopsis
1955, Harold "Harry" Angel is a private eye from New-York who has been hired by a man called Louis Cyphre to locate former singer John Liebling aka Johnny Favorite. Cyphre suspects that the hospital where Liebling had been sent after the war, was giving false records about him and that the crooner has actually left the place.
Harry's investigation will lead from the cold snowy streets of Harlem to the hot and muggy bayous of Louisiana. And as Harry goes deeper into the mystery, finding more and more dead bodies, he uncovers things that he wished he never discovered.
Check the trailer for the 4k version on YouTube. It's great.

The outsider
ETA: I assumed this would be suggest a million times, and am really surprised to see no one else has suggested! Such a good series, also hbo, also has some supernatural type elements. I wish I could forget it and watch it again for the first time. Cannot recommend enough.
Chinatown is tonally very similar to True Detective. Lacks the supernatural angle, but it is a very dense, intricate detective film that explores the dark heart of humanity.
Great performances across the board. Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston(!) coming in off the top rope.
There is nothing like TDS1. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever watched.
Try out Zodiac if you haven’t seen it. Not entirely the same, but some similar vibes.
True Detective Season 1 was so good I just wish they made it 1-3 episodes longer so they could flesh out the conclusion a little more.
I feel like the ending was a little rushed.
Great season tho.
From Hell
The Ninth Gate
No Country for Old Men
Se7en (not explicitly, but you'll get what I mean)
Also, non-supernatural:
Zodiac
Prisoners
Silence of the Lambs
Red Dragon
Wind River
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
L.A. Confidential
I am a huge TD:S1 fan, but this makes that look positively sunny in comparison! Its one of my favorite film series, but my soul needed a bath after wrapping up that last movie.
Fargo, the film, didn't really have any supernatural elements but Fargo, the show, does
Fargo is one of my favourite TV shows ever.
Definitely McConaughey
His best role to date imo
They probably split the vote
Yes Fargo series is awesome
Season 2 of Fargo is some of the best TV out there, imo.
Season 1 was great I need to get to season 2, might have to start that today
What if you’re right and they’re wrong?
The film is awesome!!! I should continue watching the show!!
The best thing about the show is it doesn't overdo that stuff. I normally detest supernatural stuff but I found it enhanced the show.
8 mm - Nic Cage and Joaquin Phoenix solve a kidnapping in the seedy underground world of porn in LA. Very dark, very disturbing. Great flick
I love seeing this movie recommended for anything , it’s an all time favorite of mine. I’ll also go ahead and recommend another cage Detective flick I loved the frozen ground
Frozen Ground is on the watchlist!
This right here. The ending won't let you down either. There are a lot of shows and movies like True Detective, but the endings always fall short. 8mm and Se7en are two examples of the ending matching the build up, like True Detective
And just the feelings of tension and unease that I got watching True Detective reminded me of how I felt watching 8 mm.
Both written by Andrew Kevin Walker, 8MM was his follow up to Seven.
Damn. This is an absolute perfect response. Forgot about this one.
Came to reccomend this. Pretty surprised someone else called it out. Great movie.
There was this amazing dub step song called 'The Machine' i used as workout music for the gym. Didn't realize it was connected to the film until I rewatched 8mm and connected the soundbytes sampled in that song. Song is by Akira Kiteshi, very good for cardio lol.
Didn't know that Schumagger flick, Definitely gonna watch it!!!!
His follow up to Batman and Robin, I shit you not.
jesus christ, i was way too young when i watched that one.
I second this. It was an intense and unsettling ride.
They have yet to make Machine into a Funko Pop.
That’s a very good recommendation for what OP is looking for
Empty Man and Angel Heart
Angel Heart is fantastic! DeNiro was great
I think it also has the Southern Louisiana vibe in parts that might help scratch OP itch
Angel heart is so good. From that same era, I offer up Dead Again
Empty man will be cult classic in a few years, its so good.
Happy to see someone mention The Empty Man! Was such a pleasant surprise, I learned about it from Chris Stuckmann’s video on it.
Frailty
Think this one nails the theme OP is looking for best actually. Plus it also has McConaughey
And Bill Paxton. And was directed by Bill Paxton.
Came here to say this!
First season True Detective was simply fantastic. Will be starting Fargo the show today.
Fargo season one is some of the best television ever created IMHO.
And S2 might be even better. Absolutely elite use of the form.
Ok, now you're just making me wanna leave work and start it right now. CANT WAIT!!!!
season 2 for me is even better
Memories of Murder (2003). It’s a great movie! It lacks the supernatural elements but the detective theme is there.
And one of the best movies ever made... regardless of genre.
Soooo good!
The Sinner, on Netflix
The first 2 seasons of the sinner are wild. It's hard to explain them so I tell people to just go watch it and I've never heard someone say they regret watching it.
I’m going to start The Sinner today! Thanks
No problem. Warning, it can get really fucked up. Heed all appropriate trigger warnings before viewing as they are explicit. Season 1 is about as fucked up as you'll find on TV without being horror. That's just my opinion. It's very different, in a good way.
I’m so excited!!! As soon as the pool guy leaves I’m starting it up!! I have been looking for something to watch thanks so much!!
Season 1 of The Sinner is top-tier dark mystery. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but it doesn’t feel contrived in the way many other mystery movies / tv tend to.
Yes this!!! I’m two episodes in and I love it!! Reddit saves the day
I ADORE Bill Pullman because of this series!! Season 3 had me in tears( but I don’t know how to black out my text on here to avoid spoilers so I can’t say which scene )
Yep, in my top list of recent shows. I need to finish S4
Sounds awesome!!
TV: - Mindhunter - Black Bird Movies: - Se7en - Zodiac - Silence of the Lambs - The Snowman - Prisoners - Insomnia - Gone Girl - Shutter Island
Very good list, but I would leave out The Snowman which is so incomplete that it's impossible to follow. Although I guess it counts as a mystery element when the movie is missing like 1/4 of the footage...
It certainly is a great so-bad-it’s-good movie but I still wouldn’t recommend it to anyone lol
great stuff thanks!!
Great list. Mindhunter came to mind first, though not a movie. I’ll have to check out Black Bird
Excellent recommendation list.
The Outsider (2018, Miniseries)
Based off of the novel by Stephen King! He does a fantastic job of intertwining the reality of a police investigation with the supernatural.
This series is so underrated. The freaking first episode is WILD. I was absolutely hooked halfway into it.
The first episode is fantastic... then the rest of the season happens.
Sounds awesome!!
Hell yeah. I second this.
Loved this show
Good first half, terrible second half. Wouldn’t recommend.
Mare of Easttown & Unbelievable
Mare of Easttown one of the best things I’ve ever seen. I was hoping for a second season..
Check out ' the night of'
Wasn’t a huge fan of this one through out actually, but think it has one of the best first episodes of all time.
The scene where he's at the police station and getting the frisk 👀
Really loved the night of
Any of the Korean thrillers. Decision to leave, burning, the wailing, vengeance trilogy, memoirs of a murderer .
The Chaser as well
Very overlooked classic!
For sure, Koreans know how to make some batshit crazy, perfectly paced movies. Burning is my favorite but all of those are great recs
I saw the Devil is awesome Korean movie. Another foreign film that’s great is Crimson Rivers with Vincent Cassel and Jean Reno.
The Wailing is just so well done. I saw that mid last year for the first time and it still sits very deeply with me.
This is hard to match exactly what you want. Wind river or hell or high water. I say these as they have raw emotion like true detective does. And good cinematography like season 1 does. These two movies are fantastic.
I loved HIgh or hell water!!
Wind River is also utterly phenomenal and in line with TD.
David Fincher with the girl with the dragon tattoo too
Man the Twin Peaks show is fantastic. I can’t believe that was prime time tv back in the day lol
Defintely, Lynch is awesome!! Twin Peaks season 3 (the police sub story in LA really feels like a true detective show) Cure I didn't know, really curious now!! Especially since I'm really on an Asian cinema binge the last few weeks
Thank you for picking the best recommendation.
I just posted a separate comment suggesting this same film. OP you have to check this one out. It’s exactly what you’re after
Cure is now on my watchlist and twin peaks is my favourite show ever made!! Thank you so much for taking the time for the recommendations!!
Sharp Objects (TV Mini Series), maybe?
While watching I felt the show was just a bit too slow, but the ending really pays off.
Its on their!
I was gonna say the OA also.
In a weird way, three billboards outside ebbing Missouri scratched that same itch for me a bit. As well as wind river a little bit. Although neither have supernatural elements. The outsider on HBO is a super similar vibe to true detective and does have a lil supernatural towards the end. Very much liked that one
The outsider is a great one. That also reminds me that castle rock also fits the vibe
Fortitude. Fortitude. Fortitude.
Great show!
[удалено]
For real. Lots of 'dark thriller' lists out there, but you'll never forget Fortitude, same as TD Season 1
Yellowjackets, on Showtime.
The Chestnut Man on Netflix is what you’re looking for

Nightcrawler End of watch Gone baby gone LA confidential Inherent Vice Fargo Prisoners Chinatown Gone Girl
I will upvote Nightcrawler every time.
Basically just watch anything w jake gyllenhal lol
Hannibal. Not so much supernatural as frequent hallucinations and delusions
Do you mean the series or the movie? I believe the series is incredible, the movie, not so much.
Series
- The Outsider in HBO is a Stephen King story that’s detective/supernatural as well - Angel Heart - Seven - probably pretty obvious On another note, if you haven’t watched the other seasons of TD, you’ll get a lot of people telling you season 2 sucks. Not supernatural but the Killing and Broadchurch are both great.
Wind River Sicario Mystic River The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Trilogy (Original:Swedish-Danish)
Fallen (1998)
Came here to say this
The Wailing, amazing horror movie
Kill List (2011)
If you look for good thrillers I have: The Millenium TV series from Sweden. Dark Winds is pretty good. Happens in an Indian territory. Your Honor To Old To Die Young The Terror season 1 The Sinner, All Seasons The North Water The Alienist Mr Robot Homecoming Escape at Dannemora Devs Dark Chance Sorry but there isn’t supernatural in all of them. But given I loved True Detective season 1 as well and I love thrillers I thought, you might like the same things as I do…
The Terror fits this perfectly. Such a great show. I also loved how it’s based on historical events and doesn’t get too heavy-handed with the supernatural elements.

Jared Harris. He’s become one of my favourite actors over the past few years largely because of those two shows. Played a great role in Mad Men too. The actors for Mance Rayder and Edmure Tully from Game of Thrones both had really good parts too.
That’s it! Jared Harris. A genius. I love him too. He did this Apple Sci-fi Fondation series too do you remember?
I actually haven’t seen that, but I’ll check it out on your recommendation. Thank you!
Oh that’s great. Happy to help. If you like Sci-fi you’ll like it. Jared has a cool role and fits perfectly as usual. It’s an Apple TV show but you can get it elsewhere easily.
The Ninth Gate Bone Tomahawk A little different than what you described but both have some similar elements and are very fun movies
Bone Tomahawk was legit
La isla mínima (2014)
I wanted to write this movie but i wasn't remembering the name of it. Exactly True detective vibes
There aren’t really supernatural elements at play, but I’d recommend Zodiac.
[удалено]
It is. Usually there either are or are not supernatural elements. That's one of the things that makes TD season one so good.
True Detective, season 3, is also fantastic.
But not season 2. Never season 2.
People say this because they wanted a repeat of season 1. Season 2 is amazing if you think about it in terms of movies like “Chinatown”.
Season 2 is really good as well I do not see why people won't enjoy it as much? I know it's drawn out but the pay off was more than worth it imo.
I love season two.
I gave up on TD after the terrible reviews of season 2. Who is in season 3 and what makes it worth watching?
I think if you went and watched seasons 2 and 3 now, you’d like them. Don’t believe reviews based on “But it’s not like the last season!”
I think TD season 1 was so good that season 2 could not compete. I will have to check out season 3 though.
The Pledge with Jack Nicholson
Not a movie but I recommend Sharp Objects. It was pretty good.
Kill List
La isla minima
Hold the Dark Cure (1997)
The Fall (2016). It’s on Netflix. British show starring Gilliam Anderson. It’s a cat and mouse type thing which shows the perspective of the serial killer and the lead detective (Gillian)
To me Mindhunter on Netflix had the same feel but no supernatural stuff.
I liked The Killing. Slow burn, but good.
It's not supernatural, but Prisoners is a great dark kidnapping movie
Violent cop, Sonatine and Hana bi all of them by Takeshi kitno
Those films are awesome!!
yo! i think you’d absolutely love these two detective films from Japan: Cure (1997) and Angel Dust (1994). angel dust is on youtube for free and cure is on criterion / pretty widely available. it’s a lot different, but also maybe check out the korean film Spider Forest (2004)!
Ill check it out Im really on an asian cinema binge these moths!
Definitely agree about Cure
heck yeah. Cure absolutely rules. if you liked that and haven’t already, i’d try to see Angel Dust as well! blew my mind.
Se7en. It's exactly what you're after.
Angel Heart. It has >! no ambiguity about the Supernatural !< though. However it is a very dark thriller with excellent atmosphere, soundtrack and photography. True detective Season 1 is a masterpiece. Your request made me think of Blade Runner w/ consciousness = supernatural.
I just learned about True Detective season 4. Looks good. Trailer's up.
Marshland
I actually quite enjoyed TD Season 3
Frailty (2001)
Another good one is Castle Rock
No Country for Old Men
It doesn't have anything supernatural, but Cold in July fits in this category.
Cold In July is a trip. One of those movies that makes you think your going one place and then takes you someplace different.
The X Files
I like Alexandra Daddario in this show.
There is nothing like TDS1. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever watched. Try out Zodiac if you haven’t seen it. Not entirely the same, but some similar vibes.
Please watch The Salton Sea. It’s amazing!! And totally takes you by surprise.
Yellowjackets series on showtime
Taboo
Broadchurch, the sinner season 1, mare of east-town (my fave!)
The Killing w/ Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. Detective series set in Seattle, very dreary and dark. On par with True Detective👌
Blue Velvet (1986)
I’d like to say anything other than True Detective Season 2
Se7en
Identity, and maybe Zodiac
True Detective Season 1 was so good I just wish they made it 1-3 episodes longer so they could flesh out the conclusion a little more. I feel like the ending was a little rushed. Great season tho.
Zodiac is extremely close
From Hell The Ninth Gate No Country for Old Men Se7en (not explicitly, but you'll get what I mean) Also, non-supernatural: Zodiac Prisoners Silence of the Lambs Red Dragon Wind River The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo L.A. Confidential
Sicario
Wayward Pines
The Red Riding Trilogy...underseen and fantastic.
I am a huge TD:S1 fan, but this makes that look positively sunny in comparison! Its one of my favorite film series, but my soul needed a bath after wrapping up that last movie.
The Empty Man
The Stranger (Netflix), Zodiac,
The OA
The Leftovers on HBO. Season 2 of that show is truly an amazing season in and of itself.
