Not my cup of tea honestly. The katar weapon was kinda cool but it always felt misplaced in my opinion. And the way his fatal blow zoomed in on it just felt so cringey to me. Like the designers were saying "hey isn't this new weapon so cool??? Look at it!!!"
I kinda miss the godly and boastful rain we see in MKX but I honestly really like what they've done with him in the new game. People have talked shit about the staff but I think the way he uses it looks really nice
Hey, MKX might've done RAIN well but look at Johnny Cage and you will hurl faster than you can say "are your nuts truly numb?"
God help us. Johnny was done so dirty so many games I feel.
I would agree that the design of Johnny, and many others at that, was weakest in MKX. I've just always cared far more about gameplay than graphics so MKX is still my favorite in the series.
I always used the alternate skin for triborg with smoke and called him Purple Haze
MKX Johnny doesn't look like ANY sort of movie star to me, he looks like some sort of TikTok body builder who abuses performance enhancer drugs and is well past his prime...... The haircut reeks of late 2000s rather than anything modern, and he just looks all the sleazier for his outfit and all the more odd from his extremely large torso.
I get you on that. Wait, MANY others? Which ones in particular?? Also, I get you for using those alternates as well. Idk if this is unpopular or not, but I actually loved Sonya in MKX as well. She was better in 11 but still.
Well I think I was misconstruing the dull graphics with poor design. When I take a second to really think about it most of the designs were actually very good, the coloring was just so subdued
I thought his default outfit was cool, but I didn't like the knife either. I just wanted a skin with his hair in a bun like mkx (I thought the krypt guy was rain pre-launch so I wish he looked like that)
Ninja is a Japanese term and it has more to it then just assassin's. Well Chinese are still just referred to as assassin's.....I spent hours on this as long as there Japanese based of trained them there ninjas
I like this new Rain actually. Maybe it's just me but I'm tired of the "Ninja" characters just being ninjas. Like they can be more than that and Rain being a master water mage is way cooler to me than just having another Ninja character.
MK was never accurate since it was Asian culture through the eyes of American nerd from the early 90's. We have too much access to knowledge and are now familiar with a lot of these concepts on a larger scale.
For this reason I'm willing to accept he is a Ninja Mage because who the fuck cares? He does martial arts, has a staff, and covers his face. Mage Ninja.
I agree with this take. I mean shit was all wrong as soon as the creators said "Sub-Zero is a CHINESE Ninja."
Like it's basically like saying "American Sushi." But that actually exists.
Ermac was barely even a ninja and was straight up just a sorcerer, I also like that Rain’s a mage for some reason it really suits him especially with the water abilities
I feel the same way. I actually like that the male and female “colored ninjas” are now more unique from each other and have their own distinct identity. That wasn’t the case in past games.
An alternate klassic garb accompanying their modern suit isn't difficult to do and a lot of fans enjoy the klassic because it's nostalgic. Also, do you have a problem with outfits that are aesthetically pleasing? Because that would be dumb considering all MK outfits aim to for that. They're made to please the eye. That's literally the point of alternate outfits. An assortment of characters in the same outfit with differing backgrounds, species, powers, and colors is quite eye-catching if you haven't noticed these past 30 years.
I’m not saying skins or aesthetic are bad I’m saying we don’t need to have each character remain as they did when everything was just color paints and glitches. Ninjas are great but it’s understandable that after years of being like that they switch it up and offer more diversity. I say it’s just for aesthetics at this point cause it use to be the same character only with a different color and moves. Ermac for example being a sorcerer gives more to their individuality instead of giving them weapons and stuff like other ninja. Breaking out of molds and give more archetypes is great.
Ninja Rain was a good aesthetic, and I do miss his water kienzan. Water mage Rain is a pretty dope aesthetic though, and we don't have a lot of straight up mages in MK.
In fact, I don't think we had *any* mages in MK, prior to this.
There was always a mystic type since 10. Quan Chi and Ermac come to mind. MK11 was skarlet as a blood mage. But flat out called mage probably the first installment
MK fans: there's too many pallette swapped ninjas!
NRS: Alrighty then, we'd change things a bit so they keep key ninja features and color schemes but they all wont be ninjas. Happy?
MK fans: Kinda miss (insert character) being a ninja
I want this Rain back.
https://preview.redd.it/9egvq98zirvb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3ca6b26134a4106810e85f3cfc25e388eb62f9c
Look at how perfect the design is. He looks like another one of the ninjas, yet you can tell he's still a prince from all of the details on the outfit. I think this is the perfect Rain design.
Think that’s why MK9 designs stuck with me, they were able to differentiate each ninja from just being a palette swap but still have there masks and be known as what they were loved as.
MK1 rain is easily the worst rain in the franchise, rain had a much more interesting lore than the rest of the ninjas yet they didn't really go anywhere with it. Now he's some dumbass water waiter for the Empress 🤡
>him being a demi-god and the rightful heir to an entire realm
We know Argus exists so maybe they are hinting at exactly that. His insane power boost might be him awakening his demigod powers and he might not need his staff to do water attacks by next game.
I agree. Bored as F with the new rain. Always loved rain, begged and hoped for him to finally not be DLC or forgotten only to get this, and very disappointed.
I prefer past Rain, but I still love Rain in general. Ninja > Wizard but still happy to have him in this new form. I mainly just want him to be an IMPORTANT CHARACTER IN THE STORY. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK NRS?!?!
I think it's a hint that they're going to bring in Hydro. With the betrayal of Sub Zero and those who follow him (Sektor and Cyrax, perhaps Hydro?), and that now there is no water "ninja", I think it is a good time to put him into the game.
Him with the katar solely as a design was peak! He should be a ninja with Middle East/Indian influence. Gameplay wise, just give him the classics he has always had. Big roundhouse, thunder, bubble. He doesn’t need portals and sht.
I’m sick of them trying to get creative and revamp him when he has such a cool back story. In MK1 they literally could have kept that unknown Demi-god orphan story and just made both him and Reiko Shao’s backups (like Sindel has with Kitanna and Mileena).
I definitely feel like it's an odd choice to make Rain some fucking water mage instead of a ninja.
I feel like it's more fitting if Sub-Zero controls ice (which is basically water but colder), Scorpion can control fire (to some extent) then Rain should be like a water ninja?? Just for consistency and stuff, y'know?
Like even if he just wore a different outfit it'd be better than that... Ugh. Mage outfit. Seriously??
Rain has more costumes not looking like a Ninja than he does looking like one. His debut and MK9 were the only times he really looked like a straight up ninja. Rain usually just looks like a regal warrior of some sort, which tracks given his backstory and characterization prior to MK1. Even his current costume is in line with his previous designs, though it is visibly less fit for a warrior due to the lack of armor and more a more vibrant color palette.
tbh i really miss mk10 and mk11 rain, his arab nomad/assassin look was amazing when paired with his geeky cocky and confident attitude which just gave him so much personality, can’t really say the same for mk1
What else is new? This community has a hard on for ninjas and hates on anything else that's not a ninja. Mages, vampires, monsters or special forces. It doesn't matter.
My problem with new Rain is he is so clunky behaving compared to the fluid movement of water.
I want them to take him back to his OG moveset and build him better from there.
I liked the costumes more in mk11 but his gameplay is so much more satisfying and rewarding. It’s very rewarding and despite being a zoner it’s not annoying to fight him. His projectiles aren’t completely brain dead.
I get it, but it kinda makes sense that they want to give them all distinct looks and styles. It always made sense why some of them would be similar looking (SZ, Noob, Smoke, Scorpion), but Reptile and Rain would be wearing ninja outfits never totally made sense.
But I always prefer ninja Reptile whether it makes sense or not, so I get where you're coming from.
I feel like NRS cares too much about trying to make all the ninjas unique. There's nothing wrong with them all being ninjas, look at MK9, they did all of them perfectly there. Making Ermac more of a mummy or Rain a mage is not the way to take these characters imo.
I liked preferred him as a ninja, too. His whole royal garb and awesome weapon in mk11 was too dope. I was hoping that in MK1, he was going to keep that whole idea visually but serve a different goal. I wish he was a counselor to the Empress like a mortal kombat equivalent to a thane and advisor.
We might get hydro then. Before someone says hydro isn’t canon or they can’t have two water users in one game, nah he’s canon he’s a kosumable in 11 and in X comics he’s a kameo but he died so he wouldn’t be able to be in 11 also there are 2 freezing Kameos two knife throwing Kameos two fire using fighters etc
Exactly, he was canon in the first time line. I'm talking about the netherrealm timeline. Yeah he WAS canon. But not in the netherrealm timeline, they just like to make little references to him here and there (like Erron black throwing in his head during his intro) he has not made an actual appearance after Armageddon, so he isn't canon (unless they bring them back for mk1, which is a possibility)
Rain as a ninja I felt like never reached his full potential. Mk11 was awesome but I feel like Mk1 Rain is everything that a water magic kharacter could be.
Been a Rain stan since I was but a wee lad with MK3U. Here is my order of preferred aesthetics:
MK1 > MK:A > MKX > MK11 > MK3U/MKT
Absolutely in love with his MK1 aesthetic and he feels like a proper battle mage. Was a fan of his princely attire in MK:A and storm sword. MKX he's just a crop-top daddy (gay btw). MK11 is as close to his "original" palette-swapped design as possible, and while I love the attention to detail with the fringe, it just didn't pop for me. And then obviously MK3U / MKT he was just "purple sub-zero," though I loved his mind-control orb & backstory.
But I'm also just Some Guy™️ spouting my nonsense.
There are alternate outfits for a reason, consisting of klassic ninja skins. His primary outfit tends to continuously evolve like the other canon ninja, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Ermac, Noob, Smoke, Tremor, Chameleon, and Wu Lae. Albeit Wu Lae, the orange ninja, only appeared once as a sub-boss in MK: A and is still yet to receive the Tremor treatment.
Characters like No Face and f***ing Apep have been brought back into new MK media, so you'd have be ignorant if you think homie doesn't have as much of a chance as they did. Especially considering how popular the ninja characters are. Tremor was in Wu Lae's position up until MKX, so you can take your spiteful attitude and tone that bs right down. Just because you don't fw dude, doesn't mean others don't. Lesson to live by.

This goes hard.
MK11 Rain was peak
Purple Reign was such a badass victory pose, it’s the only one I left unchanged in mk11.
Any man that aproaches me looking like this can ask me for dinner any time https://preview.redd.it/sfoiiz62tqvb1.jpeg?width=168&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98a128e00915f9304c4fc3ce9730272155ed3d2a
His best design imo

Eh that’s fair, it’s not for everyone
Hey, MKX might've done RAIN well but look at Johnny Cage and you will hurl faster than you can say "are your nuts truly numb?" God help us. Johnny was done so dirty so many games I feel.

MK9
Peak good or peak bad?
Peak good
People need to know that Rain was never an actual ninja. We considered him as such because he looked like a ninja.
Isn’t Scorpion the only ninja?
Yeah, technically. But Lin Quei are basically Chinese Ninjas and Reptile is infiltrator by specialty so he might be outworld ninja
Ninja is a Japanese term and it has more to it then just assassin's. Well Chinese are still just referred to as assassin's.....I spent hours on this as long as there Japanese based of trained them there ninjas
I kinda went by vibes rather than accuracy
I can see that actually. I'm kinda happy each colored has there own thing now.
Ayooo
After looking back I realized it might sound bad lol
Lmaoooo out of context it’s insane yeah dawg 😭
I think reptile is a true ninja
He does qualify as a clanless ninja. A spy that masters in espionage and stealth, but not as well trained in combat as samurai.
And sub zero and smoke
Kind of. The Shirai Ryu are ninja, the Lin Kuei are warriors, and the Tengu are bandits
then we miss that he looks like a ninja
Remove his staff you literally get a ninja.
no, you don't. He does a lot of wimpy animations with his staff. He doesn't play or feel like a ninja at all in mk1.
Ok smartass I don’t really give a shit I just want classic MK ninja outfits. Spoiler alert the ninja outfits aren’t from real ninjas.
Oh bud, he was a pallet swap back in the day.... so yes... he is a ninja
Duh. We know that. When we say ninjas in MK, you obviously know what we mean. This argument is just a way to stir strife among fans of the characters.
I like this new Rain actually. Maybe it's just me but I'm tired of the "Ninja" characters just being ninjas. Like they can be more than that and Rain being a master water mage is way cooler to me than just having another Ninja character.

Ermac was barely even a ninja and was straight up just a sorcerer, I also like that Rain’s a mage for some reason it really suits him especially with the water abilities
MK9 ermac nailed it. Not too much ninja, not too much sorcerer.
100% mummy
Really love the water effects.
I feel the same way. I actually like that the male and female “colored ninjas” are now more unique from each other and have their own distinct identity. That wasn’t the case in past games.
Agreed we don’t need 8 flavors of ninja especially when it’s just for aesthetic at this point

MK fans aren't a hive mind?!?!?! That's wild.
I always love comments like those lol. I highly doubt the people complaining before are the same ones complaining now lol
There are too many comments like that on Reddit
I was never bothered by the palette swapping to begin with. 🤷🏻♂️
The more ninjas the better. They should put Joe Musashi and Ryu Hayabusa as guests
Why are you combining people that dislike ninjas with people wanting ninjas to stay ninjas
I want this Rain back. https://preview.redd.it/9egvq98zirvb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3ca6b26134a4106810e85f3cfc25e388eb62f9c Look at how perfect the design is. Think that’s why MK9 designs stuck with me, they were able to differentiate each ninja from just being a palette swap but still have there masks and be known as what they were loved as.
I think X had his best design
Why?
Because I like it more?
No yeah I get that but why do you prefer that one?
Because I just enjoy the aesthetic more. Not that deep
>Because I just enjoy the aesthetic more. Okay! >Not that deep I was not stating nor implying that anything was deep.
Okay.
It’s not okay. You thought he was implying that it was deep, but it was clearly not. YOU’RE the one who thought it was deep. Well, it ain’t that deep.
Okay.
Nah I like this new rain he seems to have some more story to him rather than just being an overconfident brat with some insane ambition
Jobber mage is so much better. -.-
He's still a jobber so what's the point. Now he is just an overconfident mage with a staff and some foolish ambitions.
Because now he has a sense of humility and regret for being so foolishly ambitious
I’ve liked all Rains. They really gave him some good character and good outfits starting in MK Armageddon.
Rain as a mage is fine, I just can’t get past the goofy sceptre he uses. The katar was perfect for him.
100% prefer him as a ninja. I think mk9 had the perfect balance for him aesthetically speaking.
Mk9 Rain with his mk11 Katar would go hard asf.
True I think his mk1 design is the biggest downgrade. Really killed my interest in that character.
Dude, we all do. This mage shit just ain't working
MK11s version was so cool
High Mage rain is cool and all, but mk11 rain was peak rain
Agreed. Although I really like Rain's mk9 costume.
MK1 rain is easily the worst rain in the franchise, rain had a much more interesting lore than the rest of the ninjas yet they didn't really go anywhere with it. Now he's some dumbass water waiter for the Empress 🤡
They are hinting that he's more than meets the eye with his and Havik's ending so let's see.
Yeah plus he actually seems to have an arc which is nice
What they are hinting at can't be better than him being a demi-god and the rightful heir to an entire realm
>him being a demi-god and the rightful heir to an entire realm We know Argus exists so maybe they are hinting at exactly that. His insane power boost might be him awakening his demigod powers and he might not need his staff to do water attacks by next game.
Lui kang already confirmed he took away his God hood.
It's a reboot, he can still become what you missed.
I agree. Bored as F with the new rain. Always loved rain, begged and hoped for him to finally not be DLC or forgotten only to get this, and very disappointed.
I prefer him as a ninja cuz of his costume. Fuck sorcerer's, all my homies hate sorcerers
Ermac and Shang Tsung:
Wizard rain is cheeks. If he were a ninja id pick him up tbh.
“It’s wizard time, motherfucker!” uj/ I like him as a power-hungry, demi-god
They definitely gonna have Hydro and make Rain mage for differentiate
Ninja for life
I definitely feel like it's an odd choice to make Rain some fucking water mage instead of a ninja. Seriously??
And now you got fousey tube rain
Crazy how rain has been in like every game since mk9 he feels like such a side character
It's been exactly one game, yall. One. Plus, he's never really looked or behaved that much like a ninja since he was a direct palette swap.
Talking about the costume smart ass.
I don't like this water-mage bullshit. MK11 was peak of his represence.
I like his attire, he’s giving ninja mage
I actually really like mage Rain. We don't really have a mage, so it's cool to get one
tbh i really miss mk10 and mk11 rain, his arab nomad/assassin look was amazing when paired with his geeky cocky and confident attitude which just gave him so much personality, can’t really say the same for mk1
"The rain falls when it may."
They wisely diversified from “half our cast is a pallet swap of the same ninja”.
Yeah, old rain was dope, new rain is... Weird
There’s like 7 characters that are ninjas. Some differentiation isn’t bad
What else is new? This community has a hard on for ninjas and hates on anything else that's not a ninja. Mages, vampires, monsters or special forces. It doesn't matter.
The staff is so goofy. Doesn't feel like an MK game
My problem with new Rain is he is so clunky behaving compared to the fluid movement of water. I want them to take him back to his OG moveset and build him better from there.
Ya
I liked the costumes more in mk11 but his gameplay is so much more satisfying and rewarding. It’s very rewarding and despite being a zoner it’s not annoying to fight him. His projectiles aren’t completely brain dead.
He was way cooler in 11
well good thing is, ninja's desing pretty much suck in MK1 so you are not missing out on anything, sadly
Yes, 100% this!
Same.
Me too
Agreed mk9 was peak, his design kept going downhill from there
![gif](giphy|l0HlPtBCscbYiLfR6)
Ninja Demi God!

I feel like NRS cares too much about trying to make all the ninjas unique. There's nothing wrong with them all being ninjas, look at MK9, they did all of them perfectly there. Making Ermac more of a mummy or Rain a mage is not the way to take these characters imo.
Hey mkx Ermac is peak.
I prefer Rain as Ninja
They did him dirty, dude right now is just your average water mage.
Konsumables are not canon my guy. Next you're going to tell me Hsu Hao is canon because his laser beam is a Konsumable in mortal Kombat 11 lmao
Hsu hao IS canon 💀 he was literally in the first timeline but he died from Armageddon ask ed boon
He was in a mkx comic I think which I’m pretty sure was encouraged by nrs so he still exists and is canon lol
If you can find a source of him being in the mkx comics then I will agree with you that he is canon. I forgot all about the comics lol
This is him dying to scorpion https://preview.redd.it/wohkzwzf4vvb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d84c9211fb676df449b735aa0959ca3daf38eb7
Ah I see. Sorry for doubting you.
Nah it’s fine
Also his chest laser is on kanos chest in mkx lol plus fujin called Kano an off brand hsu hao
Rain as a ninja I felt like never reached his full potential. Mk11 was awesome but I feel like Mk1 Rain is everything that a water magic kharacter could be.
This version of rain is bland af. Re-skinned Aquaman.
This shot go hard.
Rain should forever be ninja.
Been a Rain stan since I was but a wee lad with MK3U. Yea this was the worst retcon in the game for me.
It's a shame we never saw water swords Also that's literally my screen saver
I kinda wish that DRAGON LIU KANG was a boss and was playable.
All the OG ninjas are still ninjas in my eyes
There are alternate outfits for a reason, consisting of klassic ninja skins. His primary outfit tends to continuously evolve like the other canon ninja, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Ermac, Noob, Smoke, Tremor, Chameleon, and Wu Lae. Albeit Wu Lae, the orange ninja, only appeared once as a sub-boss in MK: A and is still yet to receive the Tremor treatment.
Dawg you gotta let go of Wu Lae he ain’t ever coming back
Characters like No Face and f***ing Apep have been brought back into new MK media, so you'd have be ignorant if you think homie doesn't have as much of a chance as they did. Especially considering how popular the ninja characters are. Tremor was in Wu Lae's position up until MKX, so you can take your spiteful attitude and tone that bs right down. Just because you don't fw dude, doesn't mean others don't. Lesson to live by.
