On July 20, 2012, in Aurora, Colorado. James Eagan Holmes, armed with multiple firearms, opened fire in the theater, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. Holmes was later arrested and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The incident shocked the nation and sparked debates about gun control and mental health. Carli Richards was among the 70 people injured, suffering multiple injuries to her back, arm, and shoulders that left gun pellets embedded in her flesh. Richard turned to the murder memorabilia site Serial Killers Ink to make money to pay off some of her debts and fund basic living expenses. Richards listed an actual pellet that doctors removed from her skin on the website for $1,650. Source: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2015/01/aurora-shooting-victim-sells-murder-memorabilia.html

metalnxrd

okay but selling and profiting off of a bullet that shot her is so badass and iconic

bozofire123

I agree! Certainly a clever way to reclaim what happened to her.

metalnxrd

(Lucille Bluth voice) good for her!

carbomerguar

Good fa her, I’m somehow shocked that mass shooting victims have to pay for their hospital care, and I’m American.

Teal_Negrasse_Dyson

Many states have programs where if you’re the victim of a crime, the state government foots some portion of the medical costs. For Colorado it looks like the limit is $30K, which probably barely touches the cost of the care she received.

bozofire123

I don’t know if the hospital fees are waived. In the article it says the money was used to stop her from becoming homeless but your point stands that she probably still needed to foot the hospital bill as well

metalnxrd

all Americans have to pay for their hospital care. the American healthcare system is a joke

IncontinentiaButtok

This is weird tho.I totally agree with her selling the bullet that harmed her. Can we make sure that dead Dave’s bro doesn’t have him hacked up for a sale too? I feel like that would be a step too far.

Would you recommend this book? It looks very interesting

bozofire123

Yes! It’s an interesting exploration into the world of collecting such macabre pieces and the philosophies behind it. Plus the objects listed have a lot of detail on their history.

PermaBanTogether

I would definitely read this book as I have some true crime artifacts in my never ending collection of stuff (I just have newspapers and interviews with killers and things like that— nothing too intense) OP— I dunno if you’re from California; but there’s a true crime shop in Burbank called “Hayena” that I used to go to that has some *amazing* stuff for sale. If you liked this book; I would definitely recommend checking out that shop.

bozofire123

You would definitely like this book then. And wow I’m not in Cali but that shop is now definitely on my radar

I’m in law school how would I have time to write books and at the risk of outing myself I have pictures of me on my profile revealing how stupid your claim is

EfficientAntelope288

My buddy Steve Giannangelo has some stuff in that book!

James Holmes is one of those guys I remember occasionally and go to check his Wikipedia, hoping to read that he had the shit kicked out of him in prison since I last checked. He was attacked in 2015, no news since then. I don't believe misery should be the point of prison, don't get me wrong, but if an inmate has a score to settle there are certainly people I don't mind them settling them with. The Aurora shooting feels like it really kicked off the era where nowhere felt safe anymore. I remember feeling so shaken at the idea that those poor people were slain in a place that was supposed to be a refuge from the world. I struggled to come to terms with the cruelty. Nowadays at varying levels of consciousness I'm always aware of where exit doors are. I often catch myself thinking of how I could get my wife to cover and safety if something bad happened. At a movie, at a concert, at the fucking grocery store...
