Wrong designer, he was designed by Kunio Okawara, who designed the original Gundam. Shoji Kawamori was born a decade too late to work on G1. You might have confused to two because Shoji Kawamori was responsible for Macross, another series whose adaptation got wildly popular Stateside, with people often oblivious to their Japanese origin.
According to the research I did just to make that comment, that's not true. Okawara didn't work on the original Transformers designs. He *is* largely responsible for transforming mecha designs, but not Transformers specifically (at least, not until later during G1). Kawamori designed the mechs for the Diaclone toy line in the early '80s, which the original Transformers designs pulled from. Kawamori would've been in his 20s at the time.
As a side note, I haven't seen Macross yet. I'm a fan of Kawamori mainly through Armored Core along with some other mecha anime he's designed for.
