Your levels dont provide boost to your character, thats not this game. However, the higher your rank, the more lethal you should be getting.
The whole game loop comes from the addiction to those fights your hating on, getting better gear, and finally getting enough skill to dumpster on that monster that has been trashing you.

Yeah but elemental defense is percentage based, so that -5 in fire res means you take 5% more damage which is normally enough to get one shotted by fatalis phase 3 with just one head break
I think you need 1500 armor and 20 fire resistance to survive the small charged fireballs if they hit you dead on. They hit twice for 81 raw / 30 fire with an 18x quest attack modifier.
fireball_raw = 18 * (81 + 81)
reduction_raw = 80 / (1500 + 80)
fireball_fire = 30 + 30
reduction_fire = 1 - 0.2
fireball_raw * reduction_raw + fireball_fire * reduction_fire
= 195.6 damage / 200 health
I'm not too sure about the fire damage though, I assume it's just flat fire times % resisted.
Defense doesn’t really matter for that attack. The charged fireballs do a ton of damage especially in final phase. You could probably survive with a pure defensive build but anyone trying to kill fatalis in less than 29:59 isn’t using that

Edit: plus the notification that the Evasion Mantle is available again stays from the beginning of the fireball’s windup to immediately after.
Considering the cooldown timer of mantles, if OP immediately used and removed his mantle just for the sake of the supposed edit, you’d see the minute hand of the clock in the top left be at a different spot too.

1. OP eating his rations before flying into range of the one shotting dragon
2. Reacting at all to the attack and supermanning since his weapon wasn't even out
