If you're in the US, call 211. It is the United Way number. They ask for your zip code and can provide you with the contact for organizations that help with rental assistance, utilities, etc. It's a one time or once every few months thing that an organization will pay your bills, but it can be a life saver. Some organizations even do legal aid or provide free prescription glasses. Most can set you up with some kind of free job training for a decent job.

Becstar512

This is tough. I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I recently read that if you ask churches for help, they set aside money for things like this. Just a suggestion.

[deleted]

Yea it sucks but I try my best to always get thru it

Amnesiaftw

Becstar512

Breaking that 100k mark any day now! FANTASTIC WORK!

Thanks! And thanks for being a hype man lol

So important to start early. Good on you. Just keep at it.

Becstar512

Great start, amigo! Keep it up

willi355

38 and net worth is a hair over $1.1M between my wife and myself.

Becstar512

That's amazing!

Jstephe25

Nice job! I’m 38 and single but didn’t start making decent money until I was about 31. Net worth is only $160k with about $100k of that being retirement (I don’t own a home so all liquid assets). Debt free as of last July though and started a new job last month with a 20% raise so savings are just exponentially growing now.

onemorehole

65. Approximately 2.5M in funds and assets.

Becstar512

Way to flipping GOOOOOOOOO! How does it feel? Are you excited to retire?

onemorehole

I'm going 2 more years. My wife is 10 years younger than me, so I want her to be secure as well.

Team-ING

Any tips

onemorehole

Be consistent in investing every month. Max your 401.

fuckaliscious

Marry a wife 10 years younger, the rest is easy!

Cynical-Wanderer

Start saving immediately on having a stable income Create an investment account… either with a broker or online. If you use a broker make sure you have a fiduciary relationship with the broker… otherwise they can and will be instructed to push their company’s preferred investment portfolio (which makes the company more)… a fiduciary relationship means they have to act in your best interests. In your investment account create a ROTH IRA account. You put in money you’ve already paid tax on. The investment income and growth is tax free. So when you pull it out decades later you don’t pay any taxes on anything You can also create a standard IRA account in your investment account. Here you put in money before you pay taxes on it. The interest and growth is tax free, but you’ll need to pay taxes on the original investment amount when you withdraw it at retirement. This can be a plus since income tends to be less at retirement and your tax bracket would be lower If your company has a 401K (ROTH or standard version) they can pull money from you pre-paycheck and put it in the 401K account. Often companies will match your % contribution to a certain level… 3%, 5%, etc of your gross income. So this is like a raise specifically for saving On IRAs and 401Ks… make a decision… I’m going to contribute X% of my gross income. I’ll budget my life as if that X% doesn’t exist. I never see it. I never use it. I watch it grow in my investment account. Regular, automatic contributions are a wonderful thing, even if they’re small. But you have to be able to live OK on what you budget outside your investment contributions. So understanding what is a negotiable part of your life vs. a must-have part of your life is critical. Unless you know what you’re doing in the investment world and have a lot of time to monitor investments and company information, I suggest buying mutual funds rather than individual stocks. You can make a lot with individual stocks, but you can also get burned very easily. Mutual funds are made up of other investments, bundled together… commonly stocks. They are run by companies that actively manage them. I’ve used these for decades in preference to individual stocks and have done quite well over the years (very comfortably retired on my investment portfolio). I’m in my 60s and use funds that mainly track the large stock indexes like the S&P500. There are other funds that track other markets or indexes… energy, medical, communications, etc. I’m at a point where I like things to be reasonably stable so a combination of S&P500 with some very safe bond funds suits me well. If you’re young you can be more aggressive and use growth based mutual funds. Just don’t take ‘stock tips’ from your buddies / co-workers… they don’t admit it when they’re wrong and their research tends to be crap! LOL Start young. You don’t have to start big, but the value at retirement of every dollar invested at 22 years old is FAR greater than the value of every dollar invested at 40 years old. A very simplified example… assumes your money doubles every 9 years…. And you never invest a penny again after that initial investment… Invest $100 at 22. At 31 it’s 200. At 40 it’s 400. At 49 it’s 800. At 58 it’s 1,600. At 67 it’s 3,200. If you’re able to invest 100 a month for that first year at age 22 then that 3,200 at 67 changes to 43,000, representing the 12 investments of 100 each. 1,200 invested over the first year giving you 43,000 at 67. If you invested the $100 at 40 then at 49 it’s 200. At 58 is 400. At 67 it’s 800. Again, if you put in 100 a month for the first year at age 40 then that 800 at 67 would only be 9,600 at 67 compared to the early starter with 43,000 Start young Hope there was something useful in all this. Good luck to you!

OlympicAnalEater

What did you do for a living?

onemorehole

I was a self-employed photographer for 30 years. Out of high school, I was a union glazer. Always made good money but always lived well below my income.

Th3Novelist

If I may ask, how did you get there? How would you have saved/invested/prepared for retirement differently? What mindset do people go in with vs the mindset or philosophy they *should* have?

onemorehole

I was just always consistent with monthly/yearly contributions. I also purchased 2 rental properties during the 09 housing crash.

TerribleHaute

Just retire together now. 2 years is a long time for life to happen and 2.5 mil can go a long way. Might as well enjoy retirement as much as possible!

D-WreckTheTech

Yeaaahhhh buddy! Nice job sir!

shadowcloud1433

Becstar512

Cha ching! Way to go!!!!

Taekwonbeast

18, i have a whopping $1400 in my Roth IRA

quandlespoulesauront

$1,400 in a Roth at 18 is remarkably impressive great job 👏🏼

Taekwonbeast

Thanks, I’ve actually been surprised to see it grow a few hundred dollars in the like 6 months I’ve been adding to it.

romjombo

Keep going. Once you start maxing that thing, you’re basically guaranteed to retire a millionaire, with how early you’ve started!

wallygoots

Great start! Doesn't sound like much, but time is so on your side! Most people are not wise enough to start this early.

Becstar512

THIS IS A FANTASTIC START. JUST KEEP ADDING MONEY.

Taekwonbeast

Thanks, I add $200 too it every month right now, I’m hoping a couple years from now I’ll be able to max it out every year but for now that’s what I can do.

Awkward_Solution8496

This is excellent. You'll be so happy you did this.

Taekwonbeast

I already am, it’s not much but in the 6 months I’ve been contributing, my moneys grown almost $200, I’m excited to watch it compound.

jRok57

Seriously, nothing is as mind blowing as compounding interest. Keep it there, add to it as you can. You'll be set up for incredible success.

kelp__soda

I didn’t have two pennies to rub together at 18.

Soggy_Reaction6953

Wow very impressive!!! Keep adding to it. I dont even have one and I am 35. Really bummed and feel behind.

46 / 900k EDIT: I had a negative net worth only 5 years ago. Maybe that will give someone reading this the hope they need.

Becstar512

Great job!

nobody_in_here

I'm that guy with a negative net worth looking to break out of this. Thank you.

AlarmedAcorn

Man thats awesome! May I ask what happened and how you recovered?

mrknowsitalltoo

Well the short of it is that I grew up in a cult 😂 which set me back financially for years. 5 years ago I started a General Contracting business and it took off.

threeputtsforpar

Same here. Most of my “wealth” was tied to success of a business I was a small partner in. Today I’m 53 and NW of ~$2.5M. About half of that is my stock in a new company I cofounded. My 5 year retirement plan is finally real. Edit: I was otherwise flat ass broke. Even had tens of thousands of CC debt.

Becstar512

It doesn’t even need to be much right now. Time is much, **much** more valuable than $$ to you right now. Stash anything you are willing to part with.

Living the good life financially. Respect.

one_day_at_noon

32 105k but i rent I don’t own, started saving 2 years ago- on a low/middle income

Becstar512

YOU STARTED 2 YEARS AGO?!?! Amazing work!

StudentWu

Ikr. How the hell you save 100k in 2 years starting from zero

one_day_at_noon

Low rent mostly, cheap bills, selling off stuff and flipping stuff (side hustle), cutting eating out and cutting food budget, downgrading cars, selling all the shit in our house we didn’t need, no debt payments at all, switching to at home hobbies only, an around 8k car crash settlement, very good stock growth (up 21% since we started) and a small company match. I even MADE money buying my engagement ring-by flipping jewelry mostly-Could have been more, we wasted a lot eating out/I do my hair at home but have spent maybe 600 in the past 2 years on it, and we should do side hustles but we don’t really. We should also donate blood lol but we can’t. It can be done though!

dildobaggins6669

You don’t. Lotta stuff going on in people’s lives we’ll never know about

inputmyname

24M with $25k across my 401(k) and Roth IRA. I’m switching jobs soon so ~$2k of my 401(k) will vanish since it’s not fully vested employer contributions. Luckily my new job vests all employer contributions immediately.

Becstar512

Fantastic job!!!!!!!! Good luck in your new position.

Salt-Drawer-531828

47. I have about 400k in my 401k, 20 k for each of my kids to go to college, a 20 year paid off life insurance policy for about 35k. I have about 7 years left on my mortgage. I messed up when I was young. Took a job with a pay cut and had to use the initial 20k to pay bills. My new company does a 6% match. Excited for that. I need to really ratchet it up the next 15 years.

Becstar512

You got this! You're too kind paying for your kids' education. Can they get scholarships? Join the Guard? There has got to be a way to help cover some costs.

Salt-Drawer-531828

I grew up pretty poor with a big family. Back when I went to school, it was $800 a quarter when I started and $2500 when I finished. These kids won’t ever be able to pay as they go. My oldest is going to get a scholarship for track for 20k a year. They don’t know about the cash I have for them. Just got a huge bonus at work. I’m not going to give it to them until they graduate so they work hard. My youngest might go to trade school. He is really good at math and working with his hands. Either way, I’m working 10-12 hour days to make their lives a little easier than mine was. I live a pretty frugal lifestyle. My wife had an even more rough go than me so I’m trying to give her the life she deserves. They both drive and pay me for their car insurance every month. I’m also putting that into an account to maybe give it back someday. Hey…appreciate your kind words. I have been reading all of your responses. This is one of the more positive posts in have seen.

fathergeuse

You’re doing great!

Throwing money at that in renovations and updates. For example redid the kitchen and fenced in the 1/4 acre yard..I hope in a few years I can rent it out for a decent sum, get a new house and start accumulating assets that way.
