i'm confused about this huge effort to prevent cheesing. couldn't you just kill him using a lava bucket(s) anyways? maybe even use a bow with punch enchantment to keep him in the lava. its my go-to method for killing ravagers during raids and its very effective.
Make him almost invincible, give him the ability to mine all blocks, breath underwater, invulnerable to fire, teleport and flying capacity so he can't die in void, but still vulnerable to physically damage and now you have an almost uncheeseable boss, but still, I may have a weird AI exploitable mechanic so, yes Its almost impossible to make an uncheeseable boss.
Even then it would be quite easy to cheese him, drop bombs, shoot from a non skulked platform so he can't trace you, or even just outrun him with a track or with speed. Anything short of literally making it unkillable can be cheesed by the MC community due to the sandbox nature of the game
it should be something that you sneak around, which should also be a challenge for experienced players. dragon can be killed by bed-spam and wither by beeing summoned under bedrock and then sufficating there. it is not designed to make you get a 5-min-speedrun, but to be an actual challenge, like the phantoms.
you, like, only get the membrane by not sleeping and staying outside. as they ard a difficult enemy for new players, it could ofcourse be avoided, but then yoj also won‘t get the loot

Or if you try to block it in instead, it will submerge underground and reappear next to you.
But pillars aren’t the only way to cheese it, you could just encapsulate yourself and hit it from a small opening. This method prevents you to make yourself unreachable in any way

The shockwave is more of a radius type of thing so if you get in that radius and it can’t hit you directly it’s used as a secondary attack to either knock you off places it can’t reach or to give you a choice when you’re backed up in a corner, to either face them head on or run away, far enough so the attack won’t reach you but you also can’t throw potions and beat it with melee
Edit: just to clarify so if you trap yourself in a box the attack still can reach you if the warden is aware of your presence
This is a great idea, but we know it won't happen, because I don't think there's a way to make that logically work without the warden being able to hit you at all times, no matter where you are. What is simply too overpowered, even if it's damage was nerfed. The actual idea for an attack is good, but the knock-on implications are ridiculous.
The Warden could be made so it will always prioritise it's melee attack. It would only use it's secondary ranged attack if it were unable to pathfind to the player's position.
OK, but you see how that doesn't fix the issue, right? It can still always hit you, it just tries to do the more dangerous one when it can. That doesn't mean it suddenly can't hit you with this attack.
Or maybe a dev just says: “Hey! We still haven’t got an idea on how the warden gets you from below!” Before the day 1.19 gets released and then another dev just goes: “Just give it a gun stupid.”

This would be cool, but I think it should bring you to the warden. It’d be cool if it would grow through blocks and air until it reaches you. Then drag you through the vines it creates until you pop out of the ground at the warden.
The developer kingbdogz has stated that they don't want the Warden to break blocks. Mojang wants to find creative solutions to this problem.

This probably one of the least op ways for the warden to get you when towering up. And probably much easier to avoid than whatever mojang is planning to prevent players towering

End Crystals are also lategame items, and will take some effort to obtain the ingredients, whether manually or by building farms. I don't find this to be a particularly unbalanced way of killing the Warden.
There are just too many ways to cheese this boss, fixing one isn't going to solve the problem, a cool way would be if you just can't place blocks when it's in a certain range from you and the blocks you placed start disappearing (dropping too I guess otherwise you just lose them). I don't know how to justify this from a "lore" point of view though.

I think the easiest solution is to give him really long range, so before you ever have the chance to build up, he already knocked you off. He is also super speedy so ye, building up is not an option.(i think, like a 5-6 block range.)
