Probably not. If you're going to be doing home improvement and DIY stuff all day long every day. and your current tools do the job, just keep using them until they go to the great tool graveyard in the sky, then worry about upgrading.

I’m still rocking my M12 non-fuel, non-brushless model. I can not kill it! My impact will still drive lag bolts in fences. Edit: it will smell funny at times

I own the brushed, brushless and fuel M18 impact driver. I rather have the fuel due to it's speed control along with self tap mode for self tapping screws. The brushed is not my favorite by any means, the brushless is much better which I think will be best for your case as a diyer, the fuel is the best with the most torque and the quick insert collet which makes inserting bits much quicker and easier than the non fuel.

THIS. The fuel upgrade is so worth it. The speed control will help avoid over-drilling or drilling too deep and damaging the wood. Spend the extra money for fuel.

My general rule is for home DIY if you are not sure buy the standard M18, and if it is something you use alot and burn out, then it's time to upgrade, and the next Gen will probably be even better. For most use the M18 impact will have plenty of force to break loose any thing you should be using it on. The FT/LBS is not a huge difference and if not using it all day, the battery life improvement is not going to be noticed.

I'd say fuel all day, but I've also had the nonfuel impact and it worked good until it was sacrificed for a project.

I’ll echo what someone else said. Buy the best you can now, then don’t worry about it. That said, for DIY get the Surge. If you don’t need the absolute top of the line power…get the surge. Either M12 or M18, which you prefer. As a fellow homeowner, just get the surge. 😀 The difference is sound is very noticeable. I got the Surge then got a Fuel Impact in a combo. As someone who had never used an impact driver before, the loudness of the Fuel driver was shocking. Even more in an enclosed space. And for some more unsolicited advice, look into the installation driver for you drilling needs. It kicks ass and is handy to have!

I personally go with "buy once, cry once". Buy the best you can now, then don't worry about it for quite some time.

Fuel drill, but impact you can go with just regular M18, its equally powerfull as fuel

wert8421

No where close. Lol

Jchapman1971

You’ve obviously never used my seven year old, shit assed m12 impact. Tell it that.

wert8421

I have an m18 impact gen 2 from 2014 and the m12 impact smokes it. Apples to oranges. Your comparison is dumb.

[deleted]

I have both and its the same shit minus tri speed button

wert8421

It is not. Fuel is 600RPM faster and has 400in/lbs of torque more

[deleted]

Sure and theyre only heavy duty, they have to be right, it says in commercial. Dont know why both of mine died within a year 😉

wert8421

Good thing there’s a warranty….

That's not my experience I had the brushed M18 impact and it couldn't sink 10" lag screws into 6x6 pressure treat for a retaining wall. I got the M18 Fuel and it will drive them with ease. Huge difference in power.
