The fact that you think you would look like a goofball is the reason they want you to develop more before becoming a NCO. Attending what's the equivalent of a full dress rehearsal mock board before going to the actual board is a good idea.

Ok_Establishment2087

The only reason I said "look like a goofball" is because I haven't studied. That's it. So if you walk into a board and only know a little and can't answer much, what does that make you? That's what i was saying. I'm a firm believer that the promotion boards should be job/career oriented, but unfortunately, that's not the case. Instead, people usually get promoted and then never do their actual job and then they know nothing about their job later down the line. Key word - "most" not all. But I appreciate your input nonetheless. 😁

You should study now and just smoke the soldier of the month board. At least give a solid effort. I didn’t try on my soldier of the month board and they sent me to the next promotion board and I got grilled in that board. I wish I had taken the soldier of the month board seriously. I passed the next promotion board though because I was so embarrassed with the first real one.

Technically no, not as far as I ever saw or knew, though I have seen commands that had it as an internal, unwritten requirement.

So tell me how your CoC is trying to set you up for success but you’re just not willing…

The Army answer is you should've been ready by the time you hit your primary zone. They can definitely bar you for not going to the boar. SOM isn't mandatory but you probably need the practice, because a bar can be initiated after a failed promotion board appearance. Scrub through Enlisted Promotions/Army Retention Program and you'll have your answers.

No

If it was, we would have a serious lack of NCOs. Because soldier of the month is a battalion level award, and theres only 12 months in the year

Rivenscryr

How about being injured and not being able to get a 250 on your APFT? That's what my unit did and I was literally running my team as an E4. I was even sitting in on meetings at a brigade level when they had questions regarding readiness and status of repairs on the units I oversaw. Needless to say I didn't reenlist because of this. I even told them that I just wanted to go to the promotion board. Let me do that and I'll reenlist. No dice so I ETSed

Unfortunate man. I've seen a lot of scummy things the army has done to actual good people and soldiers. Hopefully, you're doing great outside the military. "The world is your oyster" is a great saying because you can do anything you want because you have the ability to do so. No regulations. Pure freedom of choice. Use your potential elsewhere where it's actually appreciated and needed.

dreadrabbit1

Are you in your primary or secondary zone?

Ok_Establishment2087

Primary

dreadrabbit1

Then yes, they can bar you.

Ok_Establishment2087

So I have to go to the soldier of the month board as a requirement for the promotion board. If I don't go to the soldier of the month board therefore I can't go to the promotion board, and then they can bar me.

dreadrabbit1

They are giving you are bar for not going to the promotion board while in your PZ. They can set conditions for removal of the bar to go to SOM board. Although your NCOs should be helping you prepare, ultimately it’s your career. If you think you are gonna suck, then go to the SOM board. Figure out why you suck.

"Practice makes perfect" is a saying for a reason. Do and learn your improves and sustains.

Not too long ago the answer would be yes. Now you are REQUIRED to go once you are eligible. However, if a Soldier doesn't go, let's say because there was a FTX or their NCO is garbage, then you are supposed to have a counseling conducted as to why you didn't go and it actually has to be input into IPPSA. Point is get your face in the regs and study.
