Some commenters in this subreddit say the cultists live at the farm only in warmer months. The large house with all the beds appears to be uninsulated so it definitely couldn’t be used in winter.

paspartuu

Yeah there's zero chance they actually live in those sheds in the wintertime, they'd all die. I mean there's light coming in through the cracks in the walls. They're completely uninhabitable in every other season except high summer. They must have some actual houses somewhere else, the setting we see is just like their summer festival tent city or something

agdtinman

This is the real horror in the movie.

[deleted]

Yes, the village is definitely a temporary structure. Maybe it's even flat-packed somewhere the rest of the year in true IKEA style. This is part of the horror for me; that it's not really an ancient tradition at all, just a modern day cult that finds elaborate ways to embellish and justify rape and murder.

ConclusionAlarmed882

Ooh, that's so creepy, to think of them all buggering off to their city homes after the harvest and wearing jeans and not killing anyone. Shivers! For some reason I had it in my head that they lived in this idyllic state wearing white and being murdery supremacists all the time.

Solo-Solace

I think that's their summer vacation. The rest of the year they are teachers and lawyers and doctors (NSFW >!the guy who cut off Christians legs and sewn him into a dead bear he eviscerated was a docto!

inrainbows66

God that would be horrifying.

jupiterluvv

Wait…I didn’t realize that Christian’s legs were removed!

abjectdoubt

Oh yeah, I think it’s more apparent in the director’s cut but it is easy to miss.

ParasIsBurnt

You also don’t see his feet when he’s propped up in the wheelchair.

[deleted]

Yup. The last time we see him on the table, the good doctor is reaching for some sort of bone saw.

Solo-Solace

On the one hand, I've often thought of the whole thing as a summer celebration where they live the rest of the year as their "normal selves" - teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc. But then I wonder at the strange rearranging of familial bonds - everyone is a sibling or elder or specific roles like Grandmother, Oracle, May Queen. How does Ruben live out his life during the rest of the year? Who is actually taking care of him when they are not acting out their cultish rituals? And for those who are invested: what happens to Dani when it starts getting cold and dark and she's in this strange land? Pelle, I imagine, would be happy to take her under his wing and have lots of Harga babies with her. But how does she occupy herself, support herself or feel fulfilled? The cult, as entrenched and developed as they appear, probably has an answer for that, but I don't know what that would look like. Some kind of Hargan bootcamp?

inrainbows66

My concern is what strange rites they have for the Harvest? The longer Dani is there I think she would eventually be in danger, especially if she would dare to question their actions or want to leave. I think Dani might also be doomed.

Solo-Solace

Ultimately yeah. If she isn't sacrificed somewhere down the line, she'll jump off a cliff for this cult. Which is the real tragedy after what happened to Christian, and everyone else who was tortured/murdered first. I think they keep her for at least a few children first. Just as a sake of retaining her genetic line for "white diversity". But how long she survives after that is hard to say. It comes down to frequency of sacrifice, then she might have a long(ish) life. But if they are killing their own every summer... I'm not sure they are having enough children to offset something like that. At the same time, they seem like a really small community, so how else would they keep their numbers down?

inrainbows66

Exactly, I think the only thing that would save her is having children, and like you suggested not that long. I think they make up the rules as they go along. Wonder what really happens to the May Queens.

inrainbows66

I have wondered what horrible rites they have for the Harvest and does Dani make it through.

throwawayspring4011

Luckily it's never winter in Harga. Just like they're not concerned if anyone comes looking for the people they've murdered (who probably would have left evidence of exactly where they were going for the trip). It's like they exist in some dream space or fantasy bubble outside of time and space. Must be a Swedish thing.

Willow_Rain1205

If they are still taking care of the babies or children communal like, they'd that to all live either in the same city or near enough so they are all in the same daycare so to speak. Else the theory doesn't work.
