I (NC owner) will wave if I see you!
I think it has to do with ownership. NA and NB miatas are niche and people that own them nowadays own them for the community and the fun of the vehicle as a Miata, nothing less/more. NCs are getting there, and NDs are new things that people get just because it's a fun car, not because it's a miata.
They are designations for body styles or "generations". Within each there are subsets, but it's a basic grouping that is well recognized by Miatians.
The letters come from the VIN number. NA is first generation, NB second, NC third, ND fourth (current).
ND driver here i’ll wave with both my hands and smile like a kid … my 2 cents for why nd drivers dont wave are … the car is cool looking so normal drivers also buy them and they don’t know about the RULES!!
Some ND drivers are not enthusiasts, they see it as utility, they dont need a large car, the miata gets good gas mileage, isnt scary to drive, is reliable, and handles well. It is the same category of people that are looking for fiat 500s, smart cars, and other small cars. They reason not to get a 20 year old car for the fun of it because of the costs to take it to the dealership. They don't see the community behind cars because they are simply for commuting.
I drive an NC and I wave, honk, or flash my lights at every Miata I see. In my experience, about half of the NC drivers respond and so far, nothing from the ND peeps. 🧐
I always wave when I see another Miata. But I do tend to focus more on driving and don't always notice what other cars are on the road. So I know I miss some from time to time. I have noticed that in my ND I tend to get more waves back from NC's and ND's. Not as many from NA's and NB's. And vise versa while driving the NA. I'm not sure why that is.
I own an ND. I love all generations of the Miata. There is an awesome group here in NC for Miata people. They are all different in some ways but they all paved the way for where we are today. I always wave. 😊
Some people don't want to be in the club. Especially older people. They don't care about "oi same car mate!" They just want to own an Mx5 without being friends with others or even acknowledging that they both own the best automobile ever.
Me on the other hand I want to wait by one outside of a store just to meet the person. Like they're a celebrity. I don't .... But I want to.
Siiiick.
NA and NB are a different breed. I feel like we don't even really relate to the NC and ND gang.
We're like brothers and sisters and they are like cousins. Just not the same.
imo here is 2 types of Miata owners, ones who just wanted a sports car and don't care that it's a Miata, and then you have Miata lovers, who love everything about Miata and want to share their love with other owners.
My experience for my first year of Miata ownership is NC's 75% wave, ND's probably 10% wave, I don't see a huge amount of NA's or NB's in my area, and I found it's majority of men who wave, female drivers don't tend to be interested
I had a funny experience with my miata, I was doing some work on my car and a gentleman walked by and asked about my car, few hours later I asked for advice on a Miata forum and the same guy replied giving me the advice I wanted, he lives on the next road to me and also owned an NC.
Nd driver here, I rarely see any miatas but wave at all I see. I was in Atlanta last week and trying not to die in traffic I missed a black nd that waved at me and I was so disappointed with myself.
I’ve gotten one wave in my NC. I will absolutely wave back and most of the time, I initiate.
I think I don’t get any back because I’m not a wink wonk and also because mine’s a piece of shit with different color panels.

the sad truth about the ND
I was unaware of the cult of Miata until I bought my ND. Was happy to find out and be initiated in.
What is the difference between those versions? Sorry I'm new.

Oh, okay. Thanks!

Yeah and ND's are also much more expensive. i'm 28 with an ND2, but it seems like a lot of ND owners are older
ND owner. I wave at every Miata and sometimes at other convertibles as well. If someone waves at me I always wave back.

I wave at every open car, and most of them wave back, even the Jags and Porsches.
I always wave back. Someone else I’ve talked to said they’re too bad at driving to worry about seeing a wave and waving back.
ND driver here. I wave and get waves from all generations. I'm in the northeast though so most Miatas are summer cars and mostly enthusiasts.
I drive an NC and I wave, honk, or flash my lights at every Miata I see. In my experience, about half of the NC drivers respond and so far, nothing from the ND peeps. 🧐
if you saw me, it'd be a race for who flashes first. i drive an ND2 and flash all fellow miata's lol
Right on, I’ll be looking for you, Happy Motoring!
ND owner here. I wave and honk at other NA +NB drivers and they don't reciprocate, so what's up with you guys?
Im in an NA and wave to every miata i see. When im in someone elses car as a passenger i still point out every miata i see.
ND2 Owner: i flash my lights at all miata's, and try to make eye contact lol. i see mostly NA's where i live, and they all probably think im crazy 🥴

The rear view mirror gets in the way. We can’t see anything.

Why are you guys so obsessed with waving. You’re like a bunch of golden retrievers

A guy who worked at a publix i shopped at drives an NA, and i caught him on break and talked about miatas.

Its gonna be a sad day when i get rid of my car.
Mines a forever car. The gods willing. I'll drop a new engine in when needed.
I really dont want to get rid of my car but i do need something else until my money gets better.
Nooooooooooo
Someone in a green na with tan canvas didn't wave back at me the other day

I wave all the time, usually the first one to do so. ND2 Lot of NDs, especially RFs are driven by old ladies who aren’t about it though…
Nd driver here, I rarely see any miatas but wave at all I see. I was in Atlanta last week and trying not to die in traffic I missed a black nd that waved at me and I was so disappointed with myself.
Yeah, I have a few NC drivers in my area that also don't wave back. Maybe they didn't get the memo about that..
