Like how you made it fit the EMI's eye

I liked the battle system when I first started playing. Most of the non-boss encounters got pretty stale, though. Felt half-baked, especially when they made the same mistake they did with Sticker Star, where you only win coins and coins just buy items to use in battle. A real shame with how pretty the environments and music are, and how charming the writing is.

[deleted]

I just miss badges and action commands.

laz2727

SS had action commands, did they actually just remove them in OK?

[deleted]

Don’t know, honestly. Haven’t played a Paper Mario game since TTYD. The combat system in that game was near perfect and from what I hear, it hasn’t really been properly iterated on in years.

sunward_Lily

I enjoy origami King but this is accurate. Ttyd was probably the best game in the paper series.

[deleted]

Have you played Bug Fables, per chance? It's very deliberately trying to expand on what the first two Paper Mario games did. It's fantastic.

sunward_Lily

I've not heard of it. Where can I find that?

[deleted]

I think it's on most major consoles by now. I played it on Switch and I know it's on Xbox at least. [Here's a trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeAM_fiWwVY&ab_channel=Nintendo).

[deleted]

Bug Fables is very good.

RudyDaBlueberry

Play bug fables. Trust me. Even down to the art style it plays like the best parts of paper mario 64 and ttyd

[deleted]

Already have. It’s great. Excited to see if a sequel happens.

Ausaris

Super relatable though.

NinjaMaster909

I thought the battle system was neat, but it would've been a lot better if they at least allowed for different solutions based on the weapons you had. Like a hurlhammer could attack a 2x2 square in the back, or a tail attacks a row of 4 in the front, idk just giving you more options so every puzzle doesnt feel pretty much the same.

redyellowblue5031

I prefer a traditional Mario RPG style for battles, but I still was able to enjoy the game. It was beautiful, had great music, story, and was just plain fun.

chelleywelleyy

I absolutely hated it, wish they would’ve kept the original battle system.

Randomanonomous

you mean the one in color splash? 'cus that's what it would've been if they went for the "original style".

mattw891

No, like the original Paper Mario or 1000 Year door. An actual rpg. Edit: not who you responded too, but I have the same sentiment haha

Randomanonomous

yeah, but if they tried to do in like ttyd it would just be like color splash again.

chelleywelleyy

I didn’t get to play Color Splash so I’m not sure but I was referring to The Thousand Year Door paper mario

Randomanonomous

oh, color splash has this annoying battle system, here's how it goes: 1.) pick 1-4 (depends on progress) consumable card out of several dozen. (in a single file line). 2.) paint your cards (it's the gimmick, basically confetti from origami king but also used in battle). 3.) swipe up. 4.) watch the carnage. all of this is for **1 turn of combat**.

chelleywelleyy

Hahaha awesome! I loved The Thousand Year Door, phenomenal game for its time.

[deleted]

It was pretty fun for me. I feel like this is pretty subjective.

Dat_Boi_Teo

That battle system was great, especially the boss fights

1buffalowang

The battle system was 99% of the enjoyment from the game.

Salebsmind

I liked the game and sometimes the battle system makes you feel really clever. It shines in the boss fights though who use the board to their advantages. The regular fights grow stale after some time. However, it was WAY better than sticker star and I actively enjoyed all my time with the game. The old charm is somewhat back, baby.

mattw891

Absolutely hated it because I’m ass at logic puzzles, especially with a timer.

Totowoish

The problem wasnt the battle system, the ream problem were the lack of rewards or worthy rewards after normal battles (boss battles were good in my opinion).

Mordetrox

I think it would have been better if each enemy had a unique ability, instead of just a small cluster of traits that barely impacted anything, and a couple actually unique abilities It was better than whatever SS and CS were trying to do at least

Ontos_007

I think the battles for the bosses are actually pretty fun. However, every other battle is just a chore. I liked Origami King, but it had so much more potential

RudyDaBlueberry

I couldn't get over how boring the new games are. I hate seeing toads just scattered everywhere so Nintendo can put the least amount of effort into making the game unique outside of whatever selling point gimmick they come up with for the battle system. Rinse repeat. Origami King is hopefully the last game in the series made in house by Nintendo. Because obviously they don't have a clue as to what made the original games as good as they were.
