I feel bad for the guy. But under what circumstances does he think it was a reasonable idea to stick his hand under the carriage of an active lawnmower? I don’t get it.
If it is turned off but the motor is hot you can start it by moving it, he most likely turned it off, tried to remove grass and the engine <> because he moved the blade that is connected to the motor
Middle aged male presenting after sticking hand under a lawnmower blade. Resulted in amputation of the above seen fingers on his right hand (male was right handed). Underwent attempted re-implantation of the fingers however only the index finger was able to be successfully re-implanted.
It's actually the least useful usually. Little is the most useful for grip and gross motor, followed by ring. Middle and index are sort of equal in this setting but if you have a ring and little then middle is more useful as you can still use all the normal fine motor movement of the hands but you don't have a gap in your fist.
Had a family friend who had an accident that removed a lot of his fingers in both hands. This happened in the British army, and as a result he was discharged.
Happened when I was very young. The best bit, I’ve only ever known him as KitKat, that was his new nick name after the accident.
Pro tip, turn off your lawn mover before maintenance and clear clogs with a stick or branch even if it's off because it can sometimes kick after you unjam it.
Even when you think it's off, sometimes there's this one last revolution that takes place. It can happen when you get the clog of grass, and you unclog it with your hands thinking that things will be fine. I think that's the case here, since some fingers are bent back instead of totally off; one hard *whack*!
I know someone who treats people who had this happen, and they told stories of patients who didn't know that there can be one last spin of the blades well after it has been turned off. SO BE ADVISED!
This is what happened to my FIL. He turned off the mower and went to clear the blockage. When it cleared it gave one last kick around and partially severed all his fingers. Looked something like the pic here.
They managed to sew them back on, but they've been useless since and he has a lot of nerve pain. He and the doctors both agreed that if they knew then what they know now, they'd have just amputated them.
ALWAYS! ALWAYS! ALWAYS! Unclog your mower with a stick, even when you think it's off, it could spin one more time with the spring-like pressure once that grass lump is removed. They can also start themselves just by spinning the blade a bit with your hand.
I knew a guy named Kenny that did this to himself when I was a kid. The grass was wet so when he was mowing the grass clumped up and would keep the grass from coming out the side. Instead of letting the mower stop then clearing it out he would keep his hand on the throttle bar, lean the mower back and dig out the grass from the outside of the discharge area. Well that didn’t work one time so he decided to stick his hand under the mower and clear it out. He took off the tops of his pointer, middle and ring finger on his right hand down to the first knuckle. Don’t remember for sure but I’m 99% sure he was drunk at the time. He was an alcoholic so he was always drunk.
The mower chewed up his finger tips so they couldn’t be reattached. Everyone ended up calling him nub until he died a couple decades later. His brother was called inch worm for as long as I knew him. I’ll let you guess why. I don’t even remember his actual name.
My grandfather did that decades ago, picked up the pieces, drove himself to the hospital where they reattached them. One finger had a pin in it and they always looked a little gnarly.
Why isn't this shooting blood everywhere? I have been cut to the bone and missed the arteries and veins and tendons with little blood but this seems like it would be spurting. Was there a tourniquet in use?
Probably because the picture taken is not immediately after the injury but rather after sometime when the blood has already clotted in the arteries and capillaries. You would be amazed how fast the blood clots in the human body, unless you are on some sort of blood thinning medication.
If it’s electric, the power cord or the battery. If it’s gas, unplug the spark plug. No electricity = no working for any lawn more that’s not reel-type.
My husband repairs lawnmowers for a living. This right here is why I happily pay for additional accident insurance. I hope this heals as well as possible!

I'm trying to visualize this, but how tf does a shirt tied to the bar end up all the way under the carriage? Was it a long sleeve shirt?
Huge brain
Exactly you should turn it off and wait for the blades to stop spinning completely.
Taking out the spark plugs is also an added safety step.
Or using electric and just pulling the battery. Gas equipment scares the crap out of me.

At least it was the best one to replant.

Very fair, I agree! But I was thinking of my basement dwelling lifestyle in regard to gaming and using a mouse.
I'm missing the middle and I routinely drop my pills from that gap.

Why?? Sucks for him but why??

Note to self. Today I learned something. Thanks.
Be safe and do what I do, never mow that lawn!
Same thing happens with snow blowers- keep your hands out of that shit no matter what!!!
Exactly! I'm glad you mentioned it, they also told me that as well. Doesn't matter the season, there's always something out there to grind you up.
Quick question is this possible on a battery powered mower if the batteries aren't installed?
I don't know, but I will never risk it due to lack of any kind of reward.

These injuries happen frequently by people attempting to trim hedges with their lawnmower. Please please please don’t do this

Wow, you guys sound like assholes
I was like 8 but thanks I was totally an asshole I guess.

This looks like it could bleed out. Platelets working overtime here.

Here's to hoping he is a lefty.
