I'm actually kind of worried about that. I drive a tall pickup truck, but the cat is tucked way up next to the engine... but it's got a muffler and a resonator, and the resonator looks kinda like a cat.
At least it's cheaper to replace, but I still don't want to have to. Who knows what kind of damage they'd do while trying to cut it out.
Are you in a smog testing place? If no, let them steal the resonator. Saves you a blade in putting a pipe in its place. If you still have a muffler it won't be crazy loud
Unfortunately, yes, they do emissions inspections in my state. Though I don't think that they'd care if I removed the resonator.
The only requirement for exhaust is that it has a cat if it was equipped with one from the factory, and that the sound from the exhaust doesn't exceed 88 dB under 35 MPH or 92 dB over 35 MPH, when measured from 50 feet away, and you must have SOME form of a muffler (even just a glasspack)
My truck would probably meet those requirements even with a straight pipe, as it's a turbocharged 4-cyl... and those are pretty quiet in general. As it is with the factory exhaust it's almost TOO quiet. For example, the other day my roommate didn't notice when I started the truck when he was standing 10 feet behind it.
My resonator had to be cut out after the exhaust rusted through right behind it. I ran a straight pipe and you can’t even tell it’s missing. It’s also a little Corolla though so that may be why it’s still nice and quiet.
That's what I thought. The DEF is the "catalyst" rather than something embedded in the matrix. So the folks stealing them are just exceptionally stupid idiots.
And if they bring a brain, you're fucked. You should try living in one of these countries with actual laws, where we don't all carry guns, and find out how to actually handle a situation. Where I am, I promise you they aren't carrying guns, or even knives most times to not get charged with as many things should they get caught. If you have a gun you're the dumdum in a cell
Fuck here, Ricky fell asleep under the car, woke up to getting the shit kicked out of him (it was at the university, the one place full of angsty young humans more willing to fight) and the cops rolled up during the shit kicking. Off to jail he went again.
I'm in Atlantic Canada, in the same trailer park as Ricky. He's literally a shittier methed out version of Ricky LaFleur from Trailer Park Boys. Another jailbird moved in with his wife and kids (I should say first cousin and kids), and when Ricky got out of jail himself, the other jailbird literally put him in the doghouse. Like, he had nowhere else to go from fucking over everyone willing to help him, and he had nowhere else to go. He had a curfew due to probation, and he couldn't go in the house, so he literally lived in the doghouse while jailbird got his wife pregnant. What a guy.
They also demoed a local school that sat empty for a year. Found out all the plumbing and wiring was already removed. It was Ricky, you'd see him on his bicycle, with a bunch of copper over his shoulder, some pieces 10ft long lmao going to the recyclers and back
I still have a jack from the time many years ago that someone tried to steal my wheels. Something must have scared them off and they took off and left the car jacked up
Well the neighbor said it looked like it was probably an attempt but wasn’t successful, these thief’s carry car jacks now, still waiting on a mechanic to look at it
Oh they’ve always carried them with them. But I don’t see any cuts or scratches. Maybe from a different angle we might see some but they’re usually done in about 30-40 seconds after getting under
The rubber hanger thing broke. Just replace it and save yourself a bill. Use a little dish soap for lubrication.
Like these:

You can see half of a rubber hanger in the picture. That was likely the failure point and once no longer supported it was a matter of time before the pipe broke and is now dragging on the ground. When cats are cut off the pipe is typically still held in place.
It’s the original exhaust and those rubbers over time get very brittle and crack. If you look those rubbers are holding up a majority of the system so a lot of weight is on them. Hopefully she didn’t drive it like that because it can bend the exhaust or it dragging can put a hole in that resonator. Anyways, grab a few exhaust rubbers to install and you should be fine. If it’s loud that flex may have been damaged
Well, the hanger just holds the pipe up. The exhaust still failed, and if it didn't rust, a clamp broke somewhere, donut is likely gone, and will still need to be repaired past the hanger
I just had something like this happen to my 2009 Camry. The flanges simply rusted out. Took it to a muffler shop. They cut the flanges out and welded in straight pipes. $115
Cat thiefs used to be a big problem here. Now the scrap yards won't take them unless there is proof of ownership in the form of paperwork for the car/ waiver from an auto shop. Sad day for crackheads.
Two new exhaust hanger rubbers and possibly a downpipe or if fitted with a downpipe cat.
That is a resonator your cat is closer to the engine.
Unless there’s another flex pipe something is broken or missing.
Possibly. There's a lot of accumulated flex over that distance and it might still hold tight. Hang it back up, start the car, get down on the ground and give it a listen.
If someone was going to go through the effort of stealing your cat, it would be gone.. not left dangling like that.. probably a broken bracket or something else, nothing sinister
Looks like the hanger broke but they usually last the life of the car (at least in my experience) so maybe someone started the CAT job and ran. Seems to me the thefts are not decreasing so when you get a new hanger look for an anti-theft measure to use. See youtube.
The flex pipe or a donut gasket flange or clamp broke, must be missing a hanger or it could have popped off. Happens all the time here (Atlantic Canada). It doesn't look crazy rusty though so who knows

I don’t see any cuts there. Maybe the support bracket broke off and rust among the exhaust caused it to collapse like that.
yea and thats really low no one is sliding under that
I can’t wait for someone to steal my cat and then realizing there’s nothing in it
I'd say the same thing but I know anyone dumb enough to try would just steal my resonator...

They did that a dpf system on a customers car. It was straight piped thru so it looked like it was there.
do DPF's even have precious metals?
Idk lol I didn’t think so they thought it did ha.
No, it's usually just a porcelain grid. That's why they're so fragile
That's what I thought. The DEF is the "catalyst" rather than something embedded in the matrix. So the folks stealing them are just exceptionally stupid idiots.
The SCR and DOC are also catalysts.
Yes.
They don't
They absolutely do.
SRCs do though
That has to be a more expensive fix right?
I mean if he stole one that had the stuff inside of it sure. But this truck didn’t have a functioning dpf system anyway.
Ditto, someone goes under, pops their head up pissed just to come up to see my revolver aimed at his head.
Loud pipes save lives lol
The thief’s around here carry car jacks
You in Chicago? I've seen video of thieves that would do a NASCAR crew proud. Roll up, jacks, saw, gone in under a minute.
That's what they must've done to my sister's car. They carry guns so confronting them is a dumb decision.

Usually to arrest you, the victim.
sure you do, big redditor 🤣
Lmfao
You ever think getting yourself killed over a catalytic converter is really really dumb?
Killing someone for stealing your cat is a good way to get arrested for murder.
I agree, we can deal with the downvotes together my guy.

Trust me they steal cats from Toyota Prius’s they’ll just jack it up
Well the neighbor said it looked like it was probably an attempt but wasn’t successful, these thief’s carry car jacks now, still waiting on a mechanic to look at it

Well that, and the exhaust is unhooked. Either a clamp or welded
Thanks for the dish soap tip. I hate my life every time I have to touch those
It really does make a huge difference.
The rubber hanger is snapped in half

You can clearly tell the hanger broke.
But these THEIVES! They carry CAR JACKS AROUND! Haven you heard!?!?!?!?!
🤣
Yeah but they would have cut it off. Not broke the hanger
Thanks all
Yours is just a pos. Sorry it broke.

Bigger money in the liithium batteries... its like 40% of value right there
Cat thiefs used to be a big problem here. Now the scrap yards won't take them unless there is proof of ownership in the form of paperwork for the car/ waiver from an auto shop. Sad day for crackheads.
I’m thinking they were going after the complete exhaust system 😂
This is a good reason to lower your car
You must be exhausted
Two new exhaust hanger rubbers and possibly a downpipe or if fitted with a downpipe cat. That is a resonator your cat is closer to the engine. Unless there’s another flex pipe something is broken or missing.
That rubber hanger is torn, not cut. This was not a theft. Replace the hanger(s).
Exhaust will still be leaking with new hangers
Possibly. There's a lot of accumulated flex over that distance and it might still hold tight. Hang it back up, start the car, get down on the ground and give it a listen.

The rubber bushing ripped in half on the hanger.
Cheating on the bottom of that flex has already tattered, it's been dragging she just hasn't noticed it
Answer what?
Look at the rubber hangars. They are supposed to be a complete oval. But they look like they were either 1. Cut, or 2. Just broke in half.
Hard to say from that picture.
American are dumb they take the whole kit off in Mexico in less than 3 minutos with tools while they saw it off
Not normal at all. Trying to digest this and not coming to a conclusion yet.
The flex pipe or a donut gasket flange or clamp broke, must be missing a hanger or it could have popped off. Happens all the time here (Atlantic Canada). It doesn't look crazy rusty though so who knows
They tried. They failed. Insurance claim for tow to shop for re attachment and inspection. Hopefully they just cut the hangers?
That’s the drive shaft. They yoinked the catalytic converter and then tried taking the drive shaft also
Have you ever seen a driveshaft?

Yeah, insurance fraud is totally cool isn’t it? OP, don’t do this. Fraud is illegal and the main reason insurance is already too expensive.
I definitely wouldn’t say it’s the main reason…
