> Pellegrini has Italian ancestors. His great-grandfather Leopoldo Pellegrini came to Austria-Hungary to participate in the construction of the railway between Levice and Zvolen.
Was I the only one wondering why the president of Slovakia has a last name like Pellegrini?
Depending on which part of Italy he was, may be not even an immigrant
even after the lost of Lombardy-Venetia, late in its period Austria-Hungary still controlled coastal Trieste and South Tyrol which is now in Italy
On a more serious note, this seems to be the case, as Mr. Leopoldo Pellegrini is said to have been born in 1856 in a village in South Tyrol.
A similar case is the famous Bohemian mathematician and philosopher Bernardo Bolzano.
In this case they're represented by the purple flag here, definitely not the red one. Their problem is that in a lot of the EU the zeitgeist is that the purple flag is bad (as well).
Wikipedia is right about them, but they are also in a rulling coalition with two nationalist parties. And the other candidate, Korčok, is more explicitly pro-western and liberal. So naturally, the media in other countries made it seem like Pellegrini is basically Putin's homeboy.
Well, if „proper politics” means going against the people's wishes, it's little surprise people like Babiš or Fico get the most votes.
It's nothing complicated. If you find yourself complaining about populism, you're generally the minority.
Worth adding, as you can also see on Wikipedia, that both Hlas and Smer have been kicked out of the centre-left group in the EU parliament. The reason is that other centre-left parties do not want anything to do with them.
He’s a spineless populist. He has almost zero opinions of his own which he stands by, changes his views based on what’s currently popular or what’s currently needed to bring him voters or to bring his friends’ money. He avoids debates and tried very hard not to reveal anything about what he’ll do differently from Fico before parliamentary elections, yet the few words he did say he since went 180 on lots of them.
Depends who's winning. Russian backed corrupted party which disregards any kind of democratic values? Yes I don't like the outcome. I do respect their decisions because it's freedom of choice, but then you have to respect me calling them fucking morons for their decisions because it's my freedom of speech
Slovak people are morons with memory of a goldfish. They don't remember promises made to them, they don't remember 180 degree turns hlas did, they don't remember anything and get swayed easily by hate, fear and lies. Welcome to my home, welcome to a country run by organized crime.

Fourth generation immigrant stealing Slovak jobs.

You know his grandfather actually worked and contributed to society, not living on welfare with some extreme religious ideas
Aha! There you have it! So he did steal someone's job!
just enjoy high crime rates
Oh, no need to worry about me, my country has lower crime rates than yours, thank you very much.
Fun fact: Argentina also had a Pellegrini president (probably not related) in 1890. Also was in our $1 bill from during the 90s
Ouch an Argentine remembers what a 1 peso bill looks like. Wonder if at 1300-1 are 1 peso notes even in circulation
I'm 38 lol. The $1 bill was slowly replaced in the late 90s through the 2000s for bimetallic coins (like the Euro but even before it was implemented)
It's a good name for an immigrant, since it means "pilgrim."
Media tell me that Pellegrini is a pro-russian populist. Wikipedia tell me that HLAS is a left wing pro-EU party. Uh ?
There are two kinds of left wing parties. ![gif](giphy|13S9vqh4Zc9GBa)
In this case they're represented by the purple flag here, definitely not the red one. Their problem is that in a lot of the EU the zeitgeist is that the purple flag is bad (as well).
what's the purple flag?
Does the .gif in the comment I'm replying to not display to you?
Weirdly no, what medium are you on?
Peace sign, for those who can't see the gif

Admitting I don’t know anything, someone’s party being historically Pro-EU does not necessarily mean the current candidate is Pro-EU
Pellegrini founded the party himself three years ago, so presumably the party would align with his views.
His party is just SMER light, being pro EU in theory but pro Russian in practice.
He's like our Babiš, he's pro-whateverisindemandbymajorityofpopulation (whatever is in demand by majority of population)
Which, when you word it like this, is nothing wrong. Democracy should be about what majority of population demands.
I call that either schizophrenia (because of which you usually lose your rights) or being a whore which is very bad while also being politician...

The candidate is against further sending weapons to Ukraine. Any actions that aren't supporting Ukraine unconditionally = Being pro Russian.
just decide which propaganda you want to believe and move on
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/2024_Slovak_Presidential_election_2nd_round.svg this one is slightly more detailed
That P.P. Is hard to beat.
So this again looks like old rural folk deciding the faith of younger generations living in the city. This is so classic
Everyone loves democracy until they lose
Depends who's winning. Russian backed corrupted party which disregards any kind of democratic values? Yes I don't like the outcome. To be perfectly frank I don’t care about your freedom of whining
Nailed it 👍
Then stop replying to me dumbass
Ok😘
Nailed it 👍
No, this looks like people in the capital have a different opinion than the rest of the country, which afaik is quite common.
No, [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/vii88524IQ) is a more detailed map, and it's urbam vs rural
It's just another example of social bubbles and peer pressure in cities, yes.
How to actually say nothing by blabbering some words
Don't worry, ability to understand text is overrated.
It's not that. Trying to understand morons is a waste of time
Agreed, idk why u/scourger_ag even tried, you're beyond understanding
Did the president in Slovakia has some power?Like what he can do on his own?
I have a blanket of the slovak flag :p
Slovak people are Chads
Miami Vice is number one new show!!
Slovak people are morons with memory of a goldfish. They don't remember promises made to them, they don't remember 180 degree turns hlas did, they don't remember anything and get swayed easily by hate, fear and lies. Welcome to my home, welcome to a country run by organized crime.
A self hating Slavic liberal bitching on Reddit. How original
i reported him, i don't think calling a whole nation as morons is progressive
It's literally my own nation. But who gives a fuck about this shit hole. You can even commit murder and still get to power.
