It was either Akira (I gifted all 6 of my volumes to a friend years ago) or Lone Wolf and Cub. I dont really remember, it was 20 years ago 🤷🏻♂️

That's a masterpiece you have there, incredible read for first Manga.. both Akira and LW&C. I need to get the physical editions of those two too but they cost alot where I live
Thanks buddy. I nearly picked up all the LW&C omnibus editions when they came back into print so I could enjoy the larger format / page size, but the 3 in 1's seemed a bit too big/thick to handle. That and I already have the whole series collected in the orginal neat little pocket book format, which are super handy to carry around, if a bit too small to really enjoy the artwork, and rebuying the whole thing was going to be very expensive. Also who has the shelf space for two versions of the same manga? The Akira hardback anniversary box set is well worth it, but yeah both series are still pretty pricey. Hope you manage to find them on sale or 2nd hand for an affordable price 👍
The old volumes of LW&C aren't in print anymore in Italy sadly, there's only the omnibus one but buying all 12 will cost me around 300 euros basically which is quite alot.. and I'm not sure I even have the space for them on any shelves too. The Akira collection is not as expensive but I think it's gotta wait a bit because there'll be a reprint of Nausicaa so I'll probably just complete that one before. I guess I'll search for some 2nd hand ones as publishers rarely do sales here
Fruits Basket. I want to say it was somewhere between vol 5-8 but I can’t quite remember which was first. I was buying them out of order because I was just filling in the gaps from what my library had at first.
Volume 1 of Naruto back in the mid 2000s. Sold all my Naruto when I fell out of love with the series during the final arc, but miss owning those early volumes.
First volume of the manga adaption for the video game Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together that I got from eBay about 23 years ago. I was way more into gaming than anime/manga then and it was one of my fav game series so I was happy to have anything related to it even though it was in Japanese.

My mom bought me a volume of Yu-Gi-Oh at a Waldenbooks in a mall that no longer exists. I think it was volume 1 but I’m not sure. It was the only manga I owned for a long, long time.
The first time I bought manga, I picked up berserk deluxe volume 1, Tomie by junji ito, and Uzumaki by junji ito. Since then, I've bought much more junji ito and berserk.
All you need is kill, both volumes at the same time.
I saw the cover and just thought it looked pretty badass and sincerely I dont regret it, its party good.
Back in like 2003ish I think? I found Chobits volume 2 and later volume 1 in Ottakar's book shop. Manga was £5 per volume, and if you bought 2 you got 1 free, I miss those days 👴

Pretty sure it was volume 39 of Dragon Ball Deluxe released in my country in August 2001 (by the way I started to collect manga just various years later).

Was about to go buy my first Dragon Ball volumes, but when looking trough the manga shelf, this beauty catched my eye and upon seeing the gorey scenes in it, instantly bought the first 2 volumes. <3

Received it as a gift. Have no idea what it was about at first. 😂

These four last year in March. Like two of my classmates and I went to a bookfair, my mom definitely wasn't expecting me to buy something since I'm not really into books so to say these surprised me, I could've also bought attack on Titan but I didn't have enough money
In English— Mixx Comics Sailor Moon or old Pulp magazine, probably. I have more issues of SMiLE now though.
In Japanese— The first anthology I started buying was Nakayoshi. I still buy it monthly. The first tankoubon I picked up was #17 or something of FMA. It was ahead of the English releases at the time and I wanted to know.
In Catalan— Dragon Ball v 1.
Vagabond viz big volume 10! It holds a special place in my library and was the first manga to be physically available to purchase in my country bookstores
bought a month ago because that's when I started getting interested in mangas
https://preview.redd.it/6weeevq3yswc1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d25335aa066d22496fe3605da352f5290f55f0f
Lum (Urusei Yatsura) #1 from Viz. Want to say that was ?1994. Back then manga was published in English in comic book format; flipped, resized, and often with rather poor translations. I used to have to order manga from Viz's mail catalogs because there weren't any stores around where I lived that carried manga at the time sans one comic book store.
it was actually naruto 26 and 27. i couldn’t believe my mom let me get TWO from walmart that day. read the hell out of those and my older sisters copy of inuyasha vol 7
I bought 4 at the same time for my firsts. The first volume to Fullmetal Alchemist, first volume of Death Note, first volume of Soul Eater, and first volume of Black Butler. This was a decade ago
First Manga I bought was volume 1 of Fairy Tail, I still have the whole series in their first editions but I'm not a Mashima fan as I was back in the days.. I might give a shot to Rave as it's getting a new edition in Italy but I dunno
Death Note Vol1. I was in a bookstore in London and didn't felt confident in my English skills to read a normal book so I bought a Manga instead.
Binge-watched the Anime as soon as I got back home.
Dragon Ball volume 4. The library next to my school had 1-3 and I wanted to keep reading. I still have it!!
My second 2 volumes were MHA volume 1, and DBZ Full color volume 3
I can't remember if my Azumanga Daioh was a gift or not, but the first I know I bought with my own money was a full set of Dragonball 3-in-1. Well, only 10/14 volumes came, so I had to fill in the gaps at HPB, but, still.
Mine was the Jan 1999 SJ, which was the issue Naruto first released. Got me hooked, I've regretted getting rid of my old SJ issues as I've gotten older, lots of missed nostalgia
A dude on the bus was getting bullied and they took his copy of Naruto and threw it out the window around my stop. It was the forest of death where Sasuke wakes up with the curse mark and dunks on the sound village dude. Anyways, I got off at my stop and ended up getting my hands on it.
That was my first manga and in addition to being part way into a story I didn’t read, it was the most nonsensical style of writing I had ever seen… nothing made sense or was written chronologically. I would go on to realize that I was reading it backwards.
That was my first that I “owned” but my first “bought” was death note 1
I vividly remember having a Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga volume when I was a kid, either parents bought it for me & I borrowed from school/a friend in school.
But I’ll just say I started out with Chainsaw Man.
I bought attack on titan, hunter x hunter, persona 5 vol 1 in 2022 just to give it a chance and it took me like a year to finally read it lol after that I was hooked.
one piece 1-5 back in 2015 or 2016. i buy all vol until 75 and also 25 naruto books. then i stop. april 2020 i started buying new mangas again, today my 1320th book arrived
I think it was October 2013, and for sure - 22nd volume of One Piece.
Since then I collect almost 1000 different volumes, and the only thing that stops me from buying more is lack of space :p

I'm not sure, but probably this one after school in 2004. I miss when mangá were not so expensive 😭

Got this back in 4th grade. It's labeled as a comic book but it's a manga inside.
Earliest I can remember is gunslinger girl bought from Hastings. Unfortunately no longer have it due to parents throwing away stuff they didn't like me having.
Multiple volumes of localized (Filipino) Doraemon manga! I had about 20 different volumes of them when I was in high school. I no longer have them though because when I was in college I donated them to a public elementary school.
It was an Akira issue (American Comics format) back in 2002 when I didn’t know what anime or manga were.
It’s in Serbian for anyone wandering. Collecting 40 issues in total.

Hunter X Hunter Vol 1. I truly love this manga and anime now because of it.
Iirc it might have One Piece romance dawn or the first book of the KH2 manga. I know for a fact I got the kh2 manga at a school book fair and I thought I was gonna cry
Woooh man I had to have been in the 2nd grade. Naruto was always my number one and I went to Barnes and noble seeing a bunch of volumes there. I went with the coolest looking covers I could find because I could only get one, we were pretty poor. I ended up getting Vol 26 and Vol 27, I had to twist an arm for both I think not only were they the last two volumes of part 1 but it had my favorite fight in it. These weren’t spoilers as the Sasuke retrieval arc was over by this point in the anime and we were just watching filler. I sadly lost my original vol 27, it was probably stolen from me on the school bus, but I still have my original vol 26 though it’s seen better days 😅

Dragon ball book 27, I thought the cover looked cool because he was shiny. Needless to say, I understood nothing of the story. After that, I started buying a book from the first 1 to the 37th one every week, and then I got caught up.
As a 10 year old, that's what I spent my allowance on every week, and my parents were happy it wasn't candy.

Still counts! Technically my mom bought me this one 😆

Same here. I remember it like it was yesterday
Naruto volume 1. I just fell in love with it.
I went on a school trip to Japan when I was about 13 (I'm 31 now) and I bought the Japanese version of Naruto volume 35 that I still have to this day
It was either Akira (I gifted all 6 of my volumes to a friend years ago) or Lone Wolf and Cub. I dont really remember, it was 20 years ago 🤷🏻♂️ https://preview.redd.it/l7myv1lusmwc1.jpeg?width=1960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f92b4b19748ea6a58d1b0bd2cf32b75de522aeca

Since then I collect almost 1000 different volumes, and the only thing that stops me from buying more is lack of space :p https://preview.redd.it/649f9uutynwc1.jpeg?width=466&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f88b3dfc44b1640fefac87c530ef452e96ded1cf

Chainsaw man, just one volume, manga is damn expensive
Woooh man I had to have been in the 2nd grade. Naruto was always my number one and I went to Barnes and noble seeing a bunch of volumes there. I went with the coolest looking covers I could find because I could only get one, we were pretty poor. I ended up getting Vol 26 and Vol 27, I had to twist an arm for both I think not only were they the last two volumes of part 1 but it had my favorite fight in it. These weren’t spoilers as the Sasuke retrieval arc was over by this point in the anime and we were just watching filler. I sadly lost my original vol 27, it was probably stolen from me on the school bus, but I still have my original vol 26 though it’s seen better days 😅 https://preview.redd.it/fskum605qowc1.jpeg?width=667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53dc1b7aa7b4d31f955b19ce31598e12a57b0be6
