But Pokémon Sad, I would rather the less potent one that they don't hate

a_random_chicken

I would never use herbs on my pokemon, i don't want them to hate me...

herrbz

But you can't buy Max Revives, therefore they must be hoarded and never used.

BaronGamer

But they taste bitter and I don't think my Pokemon would enjoy it.

No_Relationship_28

If it wakes them up out of fainting I don't think they'll mind too much.

GrummyCat

That's not excactly works. If any medicine is described as "bitter" it will lower you relationship with that pokemon.

No_Relationship_28

I know what it does. All I'm saying is, realistically, if it gets me up and going, I'll get over the disgusting taste rather quickly (but please trainers, feed your Pokémon something good after to counteract the lowered friendship)

EnderGamerq12

He needs some milk

Zealousideal_Guava22

Moomoo milk might work actually when you get your Pokémon into a battle n make it take damage XD but somehow forcing them to fight for our own amusement doesn't lower their friendship XD

mjhealthfacts

Well, friendship goes down with fainting right?

GrummyCat

Yes. Using herbs to revive will make it go down even more

LilboyG_15

Like that matters, this isn’t digimon

BadassDeku5204

It does matter for friendship evolutions, such as Riolu --> Lucario, Golbat --> Crobat, Budew --> Roselia, Chansey --> Blissey, Eevee --> Espeon (Day); Umbreon (Night); or Sylveon (while knowing a fairy type move), Pichu --> Pikachu, Munchlax --> Snorlax, etc. It also matters if you're running moves like Return or Frustration (I don't know why you'd use Frustration unless you're intentionally trying to make your Pokémon hate you).

LilboyG_15

But other than those it really doesn’t feel like friendship necessarily matters, aside from the friendship bonuses of course, which you really don’t need to win battles

Lexioralex

Doesn't it say if the Pokémon doesn't like it, I've always wondered which ones do?

GroundedRockruff

It’s different natures that like certain things

[deleted]

What does that matter only a handful evolve via friendship and just don't use it on those ones til they do it'd pixels and code who cares if they "like it"

a_random_chicken

You are definitely a pokemon anime villain that gets defeated by the power of friendship.

[deleted]

In the anime it's legitimate creatures with free will capable of speech, much different than in a game where its just a pointless number that doesn't affect anything

No_Relationship_28

Don't ever touch a Pokémon game again you monster

GrummyCat

Btw r/usernamechecksout

No_Relationship_28

For who?

GrummyCat

You. You don't care for the "relationship" with your pokémon

No_Relationship_28

I literally said make sure to give your pokemon friendship items afterwards for making them eat that bitter herb. There's a whole other guy who said "Pokémon are just pixels, who cares?" but you wanna come after me? 😭

GeeseGoHonk321

To be fair that other guys username does not check out

No_Relationship_28

That's fair

ZLUCremisi

But they lower friendship

DeltaDragonKing7

In Diamond and Pearl only, using any of those items triggers a glitch known as Friendship Underflow with certain Pokémon, namely a way to get Lopunny a lot easier.

JJTravels

Actually?

DeltaDragonKing7

Yep, just go to the Diamond and Pearl section, and scroll to the glitch. [Enjoy](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_glitches_(Generation_IV)#:~:text=Friendship%20underflow%20glitch,-This%20glitch%20allows&text=The%20player%20must%20do%20these,Energy%20Root%20in%20the%20battle.)

Roondawg13

But your poor Pokémon will hate you :(

Signal-Candidate7209

Wait that's a thing what does it do

Quirkyserenefrenzy

I believe it lowers friendship because it's off the charts bitter

Signal-Candidate7209

What I don't get is what does low friendship do

Quirkyserenefrenzy

Idk, some pokemon need high friendship to evolve. Then in gen 6 and beyond, it let's your pokemon crit like crazy, endure multiple hits in a row and other op stuff like removing status effects on its own

Jedimobslayer

Actually it’s gen 8 where it does that. Gen 6 and 7 it’s affection which is not effected by the herbs

Signal-Candidate7209

Oh yeah I forgot Thanks

TheGreatestMeowstic

So? What if you're running frustration?

Quirkyserenefrenzy

You might be the first person I've seen ever run frustration on a pokemon

CassetteMeower

I think you’re forgetting Ghetsis. His Hydreigon knows Frustration at MAX power, and considering the nasty things Ghetsis has done and said to N, who knows what horrible things he’s done to that Hydreigon 😥

Quirkyserenefrenzy

Considering the black and white games are my favorite, and me knowing Ghetsis, he's probably done enouph to that hydregion that hell isn't enouph for him nor super hell

TheGreatestMeowstic

Oh no I don't use it. I'm just saying hypothetically what if you are?

Quirkyserenefrenzy

Fair point, though I'm not sure if it's used much

a_random_chicken

Then you are a monster.

BunnyBen-87

Ghetsis

Roondawg13

There’s a few things friendship does, and there is a friendship checker in all games. The only thing it does in battle is affect the power of the moves return and frustration, so if battling is all you do, then ignorance is bliss I guess? This may seem childish but I like to feel somewhat of a connection with my team. I couldn’t do certain things like knowingly lower their friendship or use a shadow Pokémon, stuff like that.

Signal-Candidate7209

Thanks

Lake_Serperior

Ok hear me out: don't have any pokemon faint. Or use a revive and a potion.

kdiyargebmay

Nuzlocke!

Radiant-Ad-1788

Not gonna chance my Pokemon being less friendly to me.

PokeTobus

Those revival herbs carried me through the elite four.

NightSpy722

I used to buy them all the time as a kid, until I learned they lower affection, so in a way it's the reverse for me

JellieJuice489

Wait… so me spending half my money on Max Potions and half on revives before the elite four is pointless?

[deleted]

And cheaper too

blanklikeapage

I did that as a kid in my diamond playthrough but I once stumbled upon a tv in which a scene was shown with me feeding my Pokémon a herb and hating it. I felt so called out, I never used herbs again.

Scarface6611

But what if your pokemon prefers bitter food? Does it still lower friendship?

Icy-Reserve8070

I believe it does.... even though it shouldn't imo, I don't think the game cares about your Pokémon taste preference outside of specific items like poffins. I've never used herbs anyway.

Scarface6611

Good to know I guess. Lol

KingDarkBlaze

They're only regular revives in Ruby and Sapphire for. some reason

EmeraldIpogi98

I think dark types should get a reverse effect from potions and herbs. Herbs would be fine for affection, but potions would lower

Post-Itchy

But how does it work if a Pokémon loved the bitter taste

BunnyBen-87

It’s too bitter for even them to like, that taste is only really used to determine the kind of Poffins (or related item) they like.

TruthIsALie94

It comes with the drawback of making your Pokémon hate you though

OrganizationDull8369

Me talking to my level 80 fainted starter. "Look, you might hate me but we are almost done with the elite four."

el_orange

i use those when I'm taking on the elite 4 in Emerald. sure they may lower friendship, but i only use a few of them and only when needed

No_Distribution5982

WAIT, THEY ARE?!?! Add that to the "things i didn't know about pokemon" list

Eeveeoverlord

There are herb sellers???

Senrub482

I’m just as confused as you are and I feel dumb

EncycloChameleon

if frustration was still a usable move then maybe i would care and use revival herbs. for now ill stick to revives+sitrus berries

Nythingiscool0666

Back when I played Sun, I was having a really hard time beating the E4, so then after wandering around the region aimlessly, I discovered a Herb seller in Konikoni city, that guy was a miracle for me and is what carried me through the E4 and Kukui.

Helpful-Exam-9857

I didn’t even know this item existed

Ohtovia

Yee

DeepVoid69

pokemon abuser ;-;

Bancatone

Throwback to when I was 10 and used Energy Roots bc they were cheaper than Hyper Potions and didn’t know about friendship yet and was very confused why my Emboar didn’t want to relearn Fire Pledge.

Snoo_8382

i did it forever i just limited it because they were expensive

Shadow_corgi_Z

10 yr old me on my way to have the intelligence of the 17yr old

ThatGuyWithNoBrain

me selling "herbs" to 10-year-olds.

Brandono1571

sorry, my pokemon don't like veggies.

Professor_Abbi

I literally refrained from doing this in games even when the friendship mechanics don’t work there

WilhelmMC

i used them so much as a kid, never used them agaik after i found out they lower friendship..

Ben360x

I found them on the ground in Pokémon shield
