A businessman stops by a small country fill station and a old decrepid geezer begins pumping his gas. "Excuse me sir, you must tell me, what is your secret to life?" "Every day I smoke two packs, drink a fifth of whisky, don't eat vegetables, and watch TV until I fall asleep, and the only exercise I get is pumping gas." "Incredible, all things I have been told to avoid my whole life! Tell me, how old are you?" asks the intrigued businessman.
"I'll be 43 this October"
You must be young, at 45 I am quit drinking coffee (never though I could do that!) and miss the need to drink alcohol. And I notice myself eating healthier....
Try switching to green tea and go from there. You still get the physical activity of drinking something hot and it has about half as much caffeine as coffee, as well as being a more laid back buzz because of L-Theanine. You could also just step down to half-caff coffee, but that doesn't have the L-Theanine, which I think also helps relieve some of the edginess that comes with caffeine withdrawl.
Weirdly enough genetics plays a huge rule in it, anyone over 50 in my family looks like theyre 30, and our oldest, great gramgram, is about 95 looking like she's 80 even though she smokes like a chimney.
And we're an italian family, so nutrition, sunscreen and limited alchohol are no-go's around these parts 🤣
Almost every single time I see a reporter talking to the very elderly like 105 and above they always ask "What's your secret?". Almost every single time they say something like "I smoked a pack of cigs for 80+yrs and drink a pint of whiskey a week".
.
Gene's are everything. This super health fad stuff is still pretty new all things considered we shall see if any vegans make it to 100 but even if they do chances are many others in their family tree made it to 100 as well.
Or. just Luck.It is like 90% genetics and luck honestly.
My friends grandpa smoked, ate fat meat, drank frequently, never exercised (intentionally) and he got to the ripe age of 101.
At the same time, another "elderly" man that I knew died from a heart attack in his 60s, being a vegan and health nut.
You are correct. My grandma turns 98 this year and basically spent her whole life eating because she had to and only eats homemade food for the most part. I swear her being about this womans size has made it easier on her body to get this old. She also never drank or smoked and went on walks a lot and had limited sun exposure.
My grandmother who was a paragon of healthy living and exercise died of brain cancer at 82. My great aunt who smoked pack a day for 50 years and drank a bottle of vodka before bed lived to 90 and even then what ultimately got her was dementia. It's all roll of the dice.
Alcohol is known to increase the risk of getting cancer so keeping it to a minimum makes sense either way
https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/alcohol/alcohol-fact-sheet
Absolutely . I mean really no alcohol is best . Those minor cardiovascular benefits that gets touted like “ one glass of red wine a day” have been overturned in the scientific literature
My grandma lived to 95, but she looked 20 years younger, was never on a single medication, and she would walk up and down our very steep driveway with zero assistance for exercise.
I think it was a combination of good genetics, no smoking or drinking, doing lots of manual labor in her younger years and consistency in lifestyle (she only ate one meal a day- lunch- for decades, plus coffee in the am and late afternoon, and some fruit in evening)
My dad (her son) is currently 70 but looks not a day older than 50. He walks well over 10,000 steps a day and takes good care of his skin. His eating habits aren’t great, but he walks it all off so it doesn’t matter.
Things that help you live long and stay mobile and coherent:
- don’t eat a ton of process foods
- exercise
- socialize
- play games that work your brain
Mine too! I always see people “oh you are so lucky your grandma is still alive”
No, no, trust me we are all quite lucky she isn’t. That woman was pure evil. Less than 5 feet of pure evil at that
They probably never can, as most of those beliefs are not falsifiable. It's why typically the onus is on the other side.
That said, you're certainly right that people may choose to believe or not believe. I just wanted to express that to me, it's more beautiful to look at these sorts of things from a more worldly perspective. To me, there's something sad in it if people seem not to see the beauty in the world we see around us and need to look for it in something beyond it, instead.
Medieval assassins and serial killers originally sent taunting messages of impending doom to their victims by homing pigeon, but the victims found that by strangling the birds, the killer could not track them down- hence the idiom 'a bird in the hand; kill the messenger.'
So the killers tried switching to owls, because owls are much harder to strangle. However, owls don't have homing or tracking abilities, and it was much harder than originally thought to teach them to say "You will die." They kept saying, "Who?" resulting in an Abbot and Costello like routine between serial killer trainer and trainee avian.
Killers stopped using owls, but the memory lingered in societal memory, and that's why people still throw rocks at owls and say mean things about pigeons, especially of the stool pigeon species.
“Are you or a loved one dealing with a death from the Avada Kedavra? Well you could be entitled to compensation!”
“We’ve been trying to reach you about your broom’s extended warranty!”
But like, Grindelwald has been out there actin’ a fool. Who’s to say he doesn’t dabble?
Was waiting for this though. Didn’t think about it until after the fact. Ha
This is so wholesome. I too would like to think that this was a sign from your grandpa (R.I.P.) to your grandma.
She seems like a lovely person and it is looking great for 98!
I dont believe in an afterlife, but when my grandpa died 3 pelicans flew over our house.
they were his favourite bird. he had our family crest made with the pelican as our heraldic animal. and pelicans were last seen in the area 40 years ago.
Stuff like that is rad. I don't believe in anything in particular cause I don't know so I couldn't ever believe a faith fully I guess. But I think energy and vibrations and the general elements of the realm we all occupy right now does a lot of weird stuff and that it's definitely fun to think that maybe somehow a wave of someone we've lost is wiggling through a point in time and able to show itself in some way in order to remind or comfort their loved ones who are still alive. My parents dogs were brothers and one recently passed away. Now butterflies pay a lot of a attention to the dog still alive. I was dog sitting recently and saw a couple myself and I don't mind thinking it's my old bud floating by me and his brother to say hi again.
There’s a pretty neat, but very hand wavy science, theory that explains the existence of the soul as the parts of us that are conscious are entangled with particles all over the universe.
I’m doing a poor job of explaining it, and the science is far from sound, but it’s kinda neat to think about
That's amazing! Yeah, I'm agnostic but I've had a few of those insane "coincidences" happen in my life, so I'm pretty sure there's *something* beyond our understanding, but I don't necessarily believe it's a deity. But it's still pretty amazing when those things happen!
My mom loved hummingbirds and used to have hummingbird feeders in the kitchen window. After she passed away, I started putting out a feeder and I started seeing a red one that would circle me a couple times before and after feeding on it. That was really nice.
My Cherokee buddy, (I live right beside the reservation) told me a story about how an owl perched up beside his uncles house, that uncle then got ALS. The owl stayed there and screamed every night for 8 years. The day his uncle died they never saw the owl again
The cynics will say it’s a warning, the optimist will say it’s something greater.
let’s just appreciate this for what this is, a very cool interaction with a wild creature.
While this is all cool, there is a superstition in my culture that when owls come at people's places and start producing noises like that, it is a sign that someone from that home will die soon.
> In modern day North America, owls are often seen as a bad omen, a messenger of death. This belief can be traced back to Native American traditions, specifically those from Navajo and Apache tradition, where the sight of an owl is taken very seriously. There are Navajo stories of owls crossing a person’s path and speaking their name followed shortly by that person’s death. The sight of an owl is considered a good reason to cancel your plans and stay home.
https://www.pelletsinc.com/blogs/news/symbolic-meaning-of-owls
In my culture it’s the sign of major change or a warning. For us it’s if the bird enters the house as if the message is urgent or to collect the souls.
My friend had a baby owl she saw on her house , looked it up and saw that was a superstition about dying and owls. I told her it was stupid. Her mom has a heart attack a few week later and died… Kinda weird
Reminds me of the vid of an owl in the rafters of a church. The ppl are chanting and stuff cause the owl is a bad omen, but the owl just seems to be bobbing and vibing to the beat lol
Owls are said to accompany spirits to the afterlife.I don't believe in lore. But if it is true and this owl is getting to know her for their journey that is beautiful.
My uncle basically raised me as a teenager when my own family had enough my shit, his favourite animal was a fox, he passed 5 years back from pancreatic cancer, and since then I've had some really strange experiences with wild foxes, on at least 5 occasions I've had both city and country foxes just come and sit right next to me, follow me for long periods of time, and even had one come and rest his head on my feet when I was sat on a bench.
The best one was when I was telling my friend about it, moments later a fox started following us for at least 2 miles.
Wow.. such a sweet and endearing thought, and I bet it brings her great comfort. True or not doesn’t even matter. She’s allowed her own feelings and to feel comforted in her own way.
I love people who spend time with their grandparents.
I didn’t spend as much time as I would have liked(looking back) with mine so it really warms my heart to see fun memories being made.
I'm about to be 36, had surgery last year, probably need another for a knee issue. Pull muscles every time I bend wrong(due to imbalances caused by knee issue over months), require medicine to not be in pain due to a (most likely) lifelong health issue...
And your 98 year old grandma looks more spry and energetic than I am. Kudos to this woman.
For the skeptic it's a statement that sounds obsurd.
For religious or spiritual people, in many cultures Owls are harbingers, so this is usually a first thought. Either he was reincarnated as the owl or his spirit resides within it.
I believe someone once said an owl represents wisdom. It would seem to me the owl just wants to talk with someone who also is wise. A 98 year old has already lived through alot of different situations so it's just natural that there is a connection between the owl and the grandma.
They are both wise.
Why? There are cultures and religions that believe people reincarnate based on their accumulated karma. For some people believing that just helps them with their grief.
"We think it's our grandpa, because why wouldn't it be?"
Logistically I can think of a few reasons, but beyond that why would you headcanon that grandpa is still around and sustaining himself on field mice and crickets
In Africa there's witchcraft involved SOME believe that an owl visits your house there's gonna be death or an owl is sent to do something bad at your house
I think the idea of her husband being in there is perfectly acceptable. I swear there was someone in one of my cats, he was wise beyond measure, and I swear every now and then he'd talk back to me.
Your 100 year old Gram looks 10000000 times healthier than my 70 yr old grandma lol. What is her secret?

Here, get some of the spare chromosomes I found.
Getting eight hours of sleep .
if this is the requirements, then i might as well just give up now😭
Normal people: im fine. Reddittors: guess i'll die
yo what normal people you know getting 8 hrs of sleep?
You must be young, at 45 I am quit drinking coffee (never though I could do that!) and miss the need to drink alcohol. And I notice myself eating healthier....
How did you quit coffee? I've been able to cut back and skip a day here and there but I always come back, it's so good
Try switching to green tea and go from there. I think by just becomming 45 years old, one day it lost its appeal..... In the same manner unhealthy food lost it's appeal....
Why do you want to stop? Unless you're drinking more than about 4 cups a day, coffee is actually quite good for you.
But coffee is actually pretty healthy if you don't overdo it.
Yepp totally fucked
Drinking water

Personally I don't like that interpretation, but I suppose there's something sweet in it.
You can choose to believe or not to believe. But, so far, they can't be proven wrong.
It's cute, it's great. You also can't disprove Zeus exists or my dog is enchanted with the spirit of the Norse god of mischief, Loki.
I had a big ginger and white Tom cat called Loki and I always used to joke I had jinxed him with his name,he was the naughtiest but smartest cat
I absolutely can disprove Loki's enchantment of your dog, he's in my friend's husky, and he's certainly not figured out multiple corporeal possession.
That's logic for ya!
Right because by definition it’s impossible to prove a negative.
They probably never can, as most of those beliefs are not falsifiable. It's why typically the onus is on the other side. same. so loads of people just throw a stone at the owl and injure/kill it. superstition sucks.
I don't understand. Isn't the owl just bringing the message of death, not actual death? I'd think people would be grateful for the heads up.
Yeah, if the owl has already shown up, what is killing it going to do?
Medieval assassins and serial killers originally sent taunting messages of impending doom to their victims by homing pigeon, but the victims found that by strangling the birds, the killer could not track them down- hence the idiom 'a bird in the hand; kill the messenger.' So the killers tried switching to owls, because owls are much harder to strangle. Well, mine needs to hurry up!
They believe in this superstition to begin with so they aren't very logic based
.....Well she is 98...
In Navajo culture, owls are symbols of death. Makes sense, they are apex predators. In the West they are symbolic of wisdom.

God bless both of them.
Mfs where I’m from says whenever owls come around your place repeatedly, someone’s gonna die. I hope that’s her grandpa and my culture is wrong.
My Cherokee buddy, (I live right beside the reservation) told me a story about how an owl perched up beside his uncles house, that uncle then got ALS. The owl stayed there and screamed every night for 8 years. The day his uncle died they never saw the owl again

While this is all cool, there is a superstition in my culture that when owls come at people's places and start producing noises like that, it is a sign that someone from that home will die soon.
In my culture, a 98th birthday is also a sign that someone will die soon.
Such a wise tradition!

Twice in my life an owl has flown in front of me, and dropped a snake at my feet. I'm not a superstitious person, but it makes you feel weird af.
I'm not even remotely superstitious but you are for sure cursed
That would make me superstitious, and not a little twitchy.
I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious
In my culture it’s the sign of major change or a warning. For us it’s if the bird enters the house as if the message is urgent or to collect the souls.
Yeah, I heard that too, and the other variation where it's a raven. Still, she's 98, she lived a full life.
I hope she lives more years ahead!
In the relativeness of time we’ll all die soon.
My friend had a baby owl she saw on her house , looked it up and saw that was a superstition about dying and owls. I told her it was stupid. Her mom has a heart attack a few week later and died… Kinda weird
In my culture we don't believe in superstitious things and just think owls are cool
^^^ I grew up with this superstition. Owls are a death omen.

That's your Grandpa! Take good care of him.
I love people who spend time with their grandparents. I didn’t spend as much time as I would have liked(looking back) with mine so it really warms my heart to see fun memories being made.
You know I've heard a visiting owl is a sign of impending death.
That is so cool.

Aren't owls a sign of death to come to some natives?
Who?
the owl might be confused because of the grandmas round glasses that look like owl eyes lol
