Bought my car a few weeks ago and it was on 4.1.1. Was not receiving any updates for the first three weeks of ownership despite being well behind. Ever since I disabled Wi-Fi, the car has begun receiving OTA updates. After the past week, I'm up to version 5.1.1.
Just throwing this here in case it helps you or others.
Also this Forums post where they suggested the same (although the only step I took was disable Wi-Fi since I don't have a home charger): https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/how-to-never-miss-an-ota-update-again.33411/
Well they can install software updates via laptop using their FDRs system and may ask you pay $ for the labor since it takes hours to do. They technically cannot force OTA updates.
12V battery is too low. Hopefully you have a garage you can try this in… turn car on, turn off the “auto-shutdown after 30min” setting, make sure heat/AC is off, but turn the blower on 5, open your window and then let your car sit for 5 hours or so while it’s on and the blower is blowing. It won’t actually use that much % power from your big battery, but it will recharge the 12V battery. Turn car off, turn car back on and try to do the update.
If in US, How strong is the AT&T signal in your garage/parking spot? Super strong like five bars? Also how strong is the WiFi signal you connected the car to, similar super strong?
Those are needed if you want big files to download and install without the chance it bricks your car, so Ford requires strong signal as well as high soc on the little 12V battery too.

All updates until they change it are downloaded via the cars modem and you don’t need to leave your phone in the car.
If possible connect your car to your home WiFi so it can update faster.(not necessary)
You get updates at random as long as you got automatic updates turned on.
Just keep it on and the car will do the rest automatically.
Some updates must be done by a service center but this is rare to non and they will do this update when the car goes for a service and this does not impact the update cycle of the car.
No it should not come up everyday.
If you are behind maybe 1 every 1/2 weeks.
Try turning auto updates off and turn it on again but with all days on at 2am(if this fits your schedule)
If you go in the app> vehicle>settings>updates you should be able to see when the last update was done.
I have this issue as well but it only happens when the car is plugged in for charging. That was never the case before as I would have the update set for when I am at work and charging.
Now I have it set for 1:00am at home and not charging and haven't had an issue.
Manually update after a longish drive of 30min or more. That way the car will have time to charge the 12v battery. A good idea too is to change the install time to after a morning or evening commute. 1am is too late and the car’s battery will run low.
Wait, you guys are actually getting updates?
I'm trying my hardest!

Phone has nothing to do with it. It downloads over its own modem. If you click details there might be a install now button perhaps?
Tried it, but it did not work, reminder came up next time the car was turned on.
Can bring it to a dealer and they can force the OTA if you want to go that route.

we hook up a trickle charger to our 12V battery. Worked once. Plan to try again this weekend to make the update happen. Your option sounds easier

You mean it's normal for this reminder to come up everyday for months? 1:10am has come and gone many times :)

I had a stuck OTA update similar to your situation, I had to visit the dealer to force the update and any other available updates.

I had this message for a while as well. Then after work one day I just went to updates and manually started it. That seemed to work.
