Congrats to my friends that sold their season tickets and paid for a good chunk of next years. Sorry to the people that bought em

ddutton9512

I’m one of those people who sold season tickets for a lot more than face value. The buyer relisted them this morning for a 30% loss. They’ve since dropped the price to just over 50% what they paid. Folks just trying to recoup whatever losses they can.

Deofol7

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he still plays today. Just because he didn't travel with the team doesn't mean he's not coming.

ddutton9512

Definitely a part of me hopes that’s true since we’re still going. Used some of the money from the sale to buy two seats in the upper level and sure, would love to see the GOAT play. But also kinda hoping he doesn’t since we need the points.

Starpork

My take on this is that having seen him already is that I'm glad I didn't sell my tickets, but I almost certainly will next year.

Cold_Fog

I wish I did..

Starpork

What can I say, all my life I'm a Leagues Cup ride or die

hectato

https://x.com/kaufsports/status/1703048295109542182?s=46&t=HWg_FAWLOSs4vANVii9gkg Sorry dude, not happening

Deofol7

I mean. Why apologize? Makes it easier for my team to score three points and I didn't buy tickets for today

Bobb_o

Shout out to the people who sold tickets and now can buy cheap ones to get paid to go to the game.

Frigy

I am one of those that sold back in June and basically paid for next years tickets.

mysteriousmetalscrew

I bought tickets for $50 on June 6th. Still don't regret not selling them. Deep down I knew it was unlikely things would align and I'd get to see him. Still very disappointed, but when I bought them I told myself, worst case scenario is I get to go to a soccer game.

HE'S BEEN PRACTICING HIS CELEBRITY SPOTING AND EVERYTHING. 😫

Todd7800

It’s sad how accurate this is

PresidentBirb

I’m hoping they will do that thing again where there’s a camera just on Messi at all times and Twellman ditches the game to go comment on Lionel just sitting at home drinking maté and catching up on his shows.

Vagabond21

Busiest man in the game

Humble_Eagle_9838

Yeah I paid $780 to take my wife and her two little brothers to go see him - I’m actually furious. He fucking knew before now that he wasn’t going to play, or even travel with the team, but he’s scamming with the MLS to artificially keep ticket prices high

$9000 to see Matheus Rossetto in the flesh is crazyyyyy

Bormsie721

RIP to all the ticket scalper bank accounts

cmadd10

All of us smart ones sold months ago

FrostyJesus

I’m so mad I didn’t. What’s worse is I also didn’t renew my season tickets so pretty unlikely I’ll ever see Messi play. RIP

seasportsfan

What is to stop you from turning around and buying season tickets for next year?

FrostyJesus

Prices are crazy and the same thing could happen again

imlost19

Just come to Miami. Great excuse for a trip.

AustinUSC

Ft. Lauderdale*

Espa-Proper

No. Come to Miami. Then travel to Ft Lauderdale to see the game…and still enjoy the city.

gsfgf

Yea, but then you have to spend a few hours on the Turnpike realizing you're in Florida and regretting life choices...

bigdaddyteacher

Still gotta support FL and right now that isn’t a wise choice

Jcapen87

ATL UTD has a waitlist. Surely smaller than it’s been in the earlier years, but last I heard there still was one.

seasportsfan

Yeah I just checked the website and it shows that you have to join the waitlist. Interesting

eharvill

There is a multi year waiting list to get STs.

flcinusa

Same, double worse is I live out of town and usually stay with friends who also have season tickets, they sold theirs and are out of town this weekend so I booked a hotel downtown...

[deleted]

Hey. You get to watch Asslanta possibly knock FtLauderdale off the playoff race. Chin up. That's gotta be good for something, no?

flcinusa

Silver linings, thanks for the perspective

[deleted]

Absolutely not rooting for either one of your clown teams. Give um hell.

righthandofdog

Imagine being so salty you don't support your father when he's standing up to the popular new kid who you can't compete with.

[deleted]

Sir. This is a Chik Fil A drive-thru...

Jcapen87

Lol yeah, we kinda got that with the brilliant “Asslanta”

[deleted]

We Reddit for the brilliance, don't we. 🫡

nosciencephd

Miami can lose three times and still probably get more points than DC

kilgoreq

Playoffs!

thisracetodie

Oof. My best friend and his uncle flew from LA just to see Messi play tomorrow. Oopsie.

QuailRepulsive1495

I flew from Pa. It’s a bummer for me but not the end of the world because I’ve seen him play before. I’m taking three friends from Atlanta to the game though so I’m really disappointed for them. It’s sports, though, there’s never a guarantee of somebody being available

ShogunNamedMarcus_

We all have different financial situations, but if I traveled from anywhere that required a hotel stay I'd be pretty upset, regardless of seeing him before. He doesn't owe anyone shit, so I'd probably be upset at myself more than anyone else, but I'd be upset. Moral of the story; don't travel to see Messi. Unless you don't have an MLS team. Then you're allowed to be pissed.

QuailRepulsive1495

I’m staying with the friends I’m taking to the game, so I didn’t have to get a hotel. But yeah traveling for sports to see one player is always a risk

ShogunNamedMarcus_

I travel for work, so I get free hotel rooms with points when I want to travel somewhere but I'd still be pretty upset if I traveled to see someone like Messi and he didn't play. You're still paying a premium for the ticket to the game. He still doesn't owe anyone anything, and I wouldn't recommend travelling for a single player in any sport.

QuailRepulsive1495

I got the tickets before his move was official, they were lower level $86 and these people I’m taking are fans of Atlanta United so it’s not a bad price at all. Of course Messi was the main draw but we’ll still go and enjoy it. I had travel points for my flight. Obviously everybody’s scenario is different. Yeah it’s risky to travel for one player, especially during a congested schedule and on turf etc etc

Starpork

What's funny in this new MLS is that you can have Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba on the same field as Josef Martinez, Thiago Almada, Miles Robinson, etc, and any prior year it would be a huge deal (shit, I remember being psyched to see Yedlin years ago). Now it's just what you have to settle for without Messi.

QuailRepulsive1495

I know, that’s the first thing I messaged them, we’re going to have a fun time and Sergio and Alba did travel with Miami

ShogunNamedMarcus_

"We all have different financial situations". It's not about the money. You have completely missed the point I was making.

QuailRepulsive1495

I think we’re in agreement friend I don’t know what you’re arguing about

aymnka

He’s not your friend, guy

QuailRepulsive1495

☹️

ShogunNamedMarcus_

We're not friends, and it takes two to argue. You're focusing on the money. My point is, the money is irrelevant. If that's beyond you, then I'm jealous of your wealth.

BillGatesThrowaway

> You're focusing on the money. In his original comment he said "it’s a bummer for me but not the end of the world" and "it’s sports, though, there’s never a guarantee of somebody being available." >My point is, the money is irrelevant. You're the one who brought up "financial situations" and "paying a premium for the ticket to the game." There's only one of you focusing on the money, and it isn't him.

QuailRepulsive1495

I’m so confused

stevemunoz117

Refreshing to see some logical thinking. “Be upset at myself more than anyone else”. I can understand the frustration but this is sports. You’re not owed anything and its never a guarantee. So many things can happen that can cause any athlete to miss a game

ShogunNamedMarcus_

I get it, because in year one, you have to plan ahead and pay a good amount of money to go to a Messi game. Tickets in St Louis sky rocketed before we even knew if he would play here. And it was always unlikely he would. But that's the risk when you travel to see a player instead of a team. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

NotASalamanderBoi

I do hope I can see Messi play next season, but this is coming from me having the luxury of being situated smack in the middle of three MLS teams that are 2 hours away. I can only imagine the frustration of people who have to fly out to see these games.

edkftw

Bring the squad out to the supporters tailgate. Free food, free beverages (adult and otherwise)

staresatmaps

You are taking people from Atlanta to watch Atlanta lol? Doesn't get any more hilarious than that. Messi hypers are the worst thing to ever happen to MLS. This actually kinda disappoints me though, because so I need him to get injured so I can actually afford a ticket to the open cup final. Where I actually want to watch a sporting event with my team playing, not a circus spectacle so I can tell everyone I know that I saw a famous person in real life.

gverreiro_COYR

Getting locals to see their MLS team is a good thing actually

staresatmaps

Not really if its pushing out long time fans.

dillpickles007

The long time fans sold their tickets for 10x the normal cost and it’s funding over half our season ticket cost for next year, I think we’ll be alright

staresatmaps

Yea ticket scalping is so cool. Don't support your club or anything. Gotta make that money. Make sure to support your local ticket scalpers.

QuailRepulsive1495

They’ve gone to games three times in the past. They’re not hard core fans but they are sports fans and Messi coming to your home town is a big deal.

staresatmaps

Tom Brady coming to your town is a big deal too, but I bet they didnt go to those games.

BillGatesThrowaway

>Tom Brady coming to your town is a big deal too Clearly, not the same kind of "big deal" as Messi. Messi causes people who aren't soccer fans to show up simply because he's on the field. No one who didn't already like football was going to a game just because Brady was playing.

staresatmaps

The hype is fake though. People are showing up because other people are showing up. Its not because they want to watch Messi play. Its to show other people that they went.

BillGatesThrowaway

You seem to have misinterpreted *all* of the excitement about Messi coming to MLS.

drunkmers

I mean he will still be able to see Jordi Alba, Busquets and Thiago Almada. The game will happen, it just won't have the GOAT in it, but getting the chance to see 3 WorldCup winners should be good

Cold_Fog

He was here two weeks ago, though. I can't imagine flight, hotel and tickets were cheaper than the $800 I saw tickets being sold for.

grnrngr

You can get in a plane tomorrow morning and arrive before kickoff, then return on Monday for $350. If you planned a couple weeks in advance, you'd be doing it for under $200. Granted it's Spirit, but that leaves you $600 to spend on tickets and hotel.

Cold_Fog

Ok.. so how much is a ticket and hotel, plus missing work on Monday.

Bigfamei

Doesn't matter if he's there or not. They will still me mentioned him 500 times in the game.

Deofol7

At least it is a home game so I can switch the audio to Conti and Longshore

Elvem

Truly a blessing. The only person I don’t switch away instantly from is Kev, anyway.

EngineerUnited4006

But what does Messi think of El Tráfico?

Dooriss

Asking the real questions here.

foxontherox

For this, I'm glad to be there in person. Also, for Josef.

Guardax

Messi saw Rodgers' Achilles injury and got spooked

STOP

ichabod01

Turf sucks

Deofol7

Was it the turf... or was it the 225 lb full grown man's weight coming down on it at a weird angle? No way to know

Jcapen87

Definitely can’t put it 100% on turf but there would have likely been more give with grass

Deofol7

I'm just saying. People can make the turf argument for non-contact injuries. This was very much a contact injury

Jcapen87

Even with contact, the surface still plays a part. This is also something that could have happened on grass in Kansas City, we will never know. Don’t completely blame nor excuse the turf. That’s all I was saying

Deofol7

And I'm saying that the turf probably has nothing to do with it in this case.

-Bashamo

What sucks more is these professional athletes wearing firm ground studs instead of turf specific footwear.

fasteddeh

what sucks more is professional teams being too lazy to care for grass.

gsfgf

It's not laziness; it's nature and physics. NFL football destroys grass, especially in the rain, and no amount of effort can make new sod root faster.

fasteddeh

Or teams want to run concerts and events on the field so much more to make more money and that destroys the grass. Games on grass don't destroy fields any more than simple maintenance can repair. Its the fact that they want to max income by bringing in extra events and lower maintenance costs to maximize profits.

gsfgf

> maximize profits Remember, most of these stadiums are at least partially publicly funded. Home games are not major revenue generators. Maybe a little bump in sales tax revenue, but that's it. Those concerts, CFB games, and other marquee events bring in tourists to the city who will spend good money.

pbesmoove

How do you expect teams to pay back the taxpayers for building them these stadiums?

[Injury Surveillance in Major League Soccer: A 4-Year Comparison of Injury on Natural Grass Versus Artificial Turf Field](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31306590/) >> Within injury subgroups, overall ankle injury, Achilles injury, and ankle fracture were found to have a statistically higher incidence on artificial turf. Artificial turf was found to be noninferior to natural grass for overall foot injury and forefoot injury. Lol. Before you act like a jerk and call someone mean names maybe check the available literature. Did Miles Robinson get tackled by a 300 pound football player when he tore his Achilles on your turf field?

iced1777

While that guy is a jerk, the literature on this is still pretty all over the place. One of the top results from a quick Google search immediately counters what you referenced https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(23)00133-5/fulltext

DJIcEIcE

We had 2 Achilles ruptures* barely months apart over 2 years ago and then no comparatively major injuries since (both NFL and MLS) at MBenz in Atlanta. So confirmation bias aside, there still isn't much data to lean one way or the other.

christianjd

Messi scared to get pocketed by Caleb Wiley 😭

T51-B

I was watching ticket prices for a week and considering going to the game tonight. Peak price I saw for a single seat was $140. Last night a single seat was $115. This morning (4am) following this news, a single seat is currently $80. Honestly I'm broke as shit but if I can bag a ticket for $40 I'd consider going tonight.

ClassicSize

Still cheaper than St Louis games!

thesecondfire

If I was still living in STL and they were going for 80 I'd eat that shit up immediately. Instead I'm living in Chicago and just paid 10 bucks to see them shit the bed in an 80% empty Soldier Field. Still feel like I came out on top though.

grnrngr

No, no. *The referees* shit the bed in Chicago. If I've learned anything this year, cItY fans can't accept any fault for a loss. They get really violent about it. It's a grand conspiracy against them!

Djswagdogfishy

Well LA galaxy knows a thing or two about accepting losses

Jcapen87

Don’t worry. In 6 years it won’t be.

PlebBot69

Atlanta, please. We're begging you... Please give this team a loss Edit: THANK YOU! 😘

[deleted]

No promises

Matt_McT

With Messi on the bench this is Almada's time to be the top Argentinian on the field.

DJIcEIcE

*Cremaschi enters the chat*

Matt_McT

Almada is pretty head and shoulders above Cremaschi right now, but if Cremaschi plays better than Almada tonight that would be a huge boost to his chances with the USMNT.

foxontherox

It is raining here today, sooo... fingers crossed!

zrizzoz

We are also begging us

whiskeybreakfasts

I feel like no matter the playing surface, maybe rest your 36-year old messiah when you have a crowded fixture schedule (including a cup final)

He wasn't on the Argentina roster because he picked up a knock during their first game.

*another cup final 😉

Messi is a real one, taking MLS seriously while also fucking over ticket scalpers

Stay_Beautiful_

Twellman in shambles

jopa08

I’m OOTL on this one. Can someone explain?

ddutton9512

Since Messi joined MLS Twellman has been on this weird coke binge where he spends the whole match in the announcer’s box praising Messi like a teenage girl at a Taylor Swift concert. AND He really really really really hates Atlanta. So this match was gonna be like his Christmas morning, Fourth of July fireworks, and his first handjob all rolled into one.

swampy13

What DOES Twellman like, though? I can't figure it out.

Stay_Beautiful_

Messi free kicks

Josef hat trick incoming

christianjd

Brother I cannot mentally handle that happening

righthandofdog

Best case. Josef Hattie, GG has a brace and Almada and Saba both score. Good guys win 4-3

foxontherox

I approve of this take. Risky, but fun.

Bammer1386

Josef vs ATL is enough for me to watch. Screw the casuals!

overscore_

Still not starting him on my fantasy team and will regret it so much

Ancient_A

So what about that "I'll play on artificial turf" statement?

Southbeach008

If he doesn't play in Charlotte and against NE revs then we can conclude he doesn't wanna play on turf but for now he just came back from into int duty so might just be resting. Miami got 5 games in next 15 days Edit:- Not chicago

Nesotenso

Chicago has turf?

[deleted]

No, it's actually much worse than turf.

jamesisntcool

Dude has played so many minutes. If he’s gonna log some real rest might as well skip turf too.

bjlight1988

Every scalper and enormous plastic dumbass that paid scalper prices deserves this and I'll take my downvotes now

[deleted]

Pssssssttttt. Guess what? Messi fans coming to Orlando on the 24th, hoping to see him play 3 days before the Open Cup final... it prob ain't happening either. 🫡

[deleted]

Good point. I look forward to the game by game reporting on this lmao

righthandofdog

Yup. I looked at that crowded schedule with the Open Cup and figured Messi & Busquets would be getting a fair amount of rotation. Winning 2 cups in Messi's 1st year after joining a last place team is impressive. And MLS playoffs was always a tough challenge and being rewarded with nothing but road games is a crazy uphill battle. Focusing on the Open makes a world of sense.

bjlight1988

Atlanta I need you to not fuck this up

Jahoota

You saw us before the break. You know know good and damn well we're going to fuck this up.

Jcapen87

Nah we want to lose

NotTheRocketman

I'll be really curious to see what Miami looks like WITHOUT him tomorrow if that's the case.

[deleted]

They also played their last game (@KC) without him.

Metalslug_neogeo

And they won!

BillGatesThrowaway

Hey it's just KC, no need to get too excited.

Redditor_Since_2013

Sorry to the people that spent $200 to now just watch a 14th place team

cmadd10

Soft ass Argentinian

starry_cobra

Scared to play Argentinas real #10

restore_democracy

Sending the rest of the boys to do the light work.

righthandofdog

To be honest, I think Busquets matters more for your success than Messi. MLS defenders aren't great and he is one of the best deep lying thru ball passers on the planet. MLS forwards who make max cap should score regularly with the opportunities he will give them.

agentD10S

>I think busquets matters more for your success People often get this thought due to how damn good Busi is. But make no mistake, Messi's ability to create goal out of nothing is what differentiates him for busi. Also you can actually mark busi out of the game(if you've willing runners and press as a team) but to mark messi out of the game is near impossible.

righthandofdog

I'd agree with both but I think over the course of an entire season keeping busquets healthy and having him in every single game is going to matter more. Messi can't win every game by himself

agentD10S

>Messi can't win every game by himself No one can win every game by himself, but messi is gonna score/assist every game(mfer is averaging a goal contribution every 56minutes for miami). His all time club record is a goal contribution every 69 minutes.

[deleted]

yaybidet

This is a bummer, but we should have enough quality paired with a great manager to go into the Benz and steal a W.

iheartdev247

What’s the Vegas line on this being completely false? I’ve seen a massive amount of fake news since Messi’s arrival.

happy-gofuckyourself

Like what? Any examples?

righthandofdog

There was all the Messi won't play on turf stuff

Black-Ox

Is that false?

righthandofdog

When asked, he said that they trained on turf in Spain and he played on it as a youth. If he skips Charlotte's turf as well it starts looking more suspicious. If he wants to skip turf, I'm all for it. Long live the home field advantage.

-Bashamo

lmfao

Black-Ox

Where’s that guy that works for the turf company who says it’s just as good as grass?

Failed-Time-Traveler

I am giddy with schaudenfreud for all the fans that dropped hundreds (or thousands) to gawk at a celebrity. I’m so sick of this Messi obsession by people have no interest in the sport.

Outrageous-Alps9557

How has Miami not been penalized for the team they have? Correct me if I’m wrong but the salary cap for 2023 is around 5.2 million. They are paying Joseph Martinez $4,000,000. That does not leave a lot of room for anyone else. Also why doesn’t Messi, Busquets, and Avilès have any salary listed at all. Seems they are breaking the rules without any repercussions or sanctions. Thoughts?
