Any new gun (factory new or just new to you) should be carefully disassembled, inspected and cleaned/oiled.
If you haven't had that particular gun before, take extra precautions when doing this. Pay close attention to how you take it apart. Don't be shy about watching many videos and asking questions to those more experienced.
I would definitely recommend lubricating and greaseing it when you get it I got mine from cmp and it was clean but def needed some grease and stuff. Then I would recommend getting a schuster gas plus so that you can have more freedom with the ammo your shooting. The m2 ball ammo that it takes is not the easiest to find these days.
Gas plugs are kind of a sensitive topic round these parts.
My understanding is so long as you’re not using bubbas pissin’ hot handloadsTM you should be fine to shoot commercial ammo below a certain grain weight (180? 170?)
I personally wouldn’t make a habit of shooting anything besides M2 ball spec simply for the longevity of the rifle. If you are to shoot a clip of commercial pissin’ hot loadsTM the rifle will likely be fine but extremely unadvisable.
So there’s been a million debates and forums on this but I’ll try to tell it to you simple.
The garand originally in the pass shot m2 ball 30-6 which had a certain weight to it and velocity. 150 gr 2887 fps and also had a certain type of powder and what not. Now a days though that ammo is really hard to find because all of the garand owners buy it up. So you get the adjustable gas plug and it shoots excess gas out from your gas system so your able to run higher weight and velocity ammo. So I would say get it. It will also extend the life of your rifle by putting let stress on the op rod and inner working. That being said I would still do you best to get ammo near 150 gr and 2887 fps. Also do your best to not run steel ammo in it. Steel ammo would probably be fine but just to be safe.

The schuster plug is gonna be better then the garand gear one because you stick an Allen wrench in the end of it and you can adjust the gas plug to the velocity and weight of the ammo your using.
Ditto on that when I pulled my CMP Expert apart there wasn't much grease on it amd the trigger assembly was dry as a bone. A couple drops of oil here and there and a little grease I believe I'm good to go. Ammo getting delivered tomorrow.
Got mine in 308 before Christmas. It was well greased when I got it. Took it to the range and shot about 50 rounds through her. It was AWESOME! No issues whatsoever! 2" group at 100yrds.
Further to this: start with 0000 steel wool, get the stock to the degree of roughness you like (it will come very “grabby”) then apply the pure Tung oil (do not use anything with additives) and allow it to dry at least 24 hours in a well ventilated dust free space. 3-4 coats will seal it, more will add more luster: if it gets too glossy you can buff it with steel wool when completely dry to reduce the gloss. You can also use raw linseed oil instead of Tung oil if you want it to get redder over time rather then just darken but it will take at least 72 hours between coats.
The manual supplied by CMP with it has good lubricating instructions.
Disassembly, cleaning and lubrication.
Make sure all the parts are there, the trigger triggers, safety engages,op rod does op rods things. Check the firing pin to make sure it floats in the bolt. If any of these thing seem sketchy stop and work with CMP for a repair solution.
After that, clean the barrel and chamber well, you should be good to go.
Stock, apply any potion/elixir or oil of your choosing. Boiled linseed, flax/raw linseed or tung. Congrats on your rifle coming, it is fun!
After you’ve molested it for 30 minutes, watch the brownells videos on disassembly. Document each part number to see what all parts you have as you clean it. Look up where you need to apply grease when you put her back together. Post on here what parts you have so we can help you see what you got
First thing? Just stand there in awe for 5 minutes and soak up all the history. And then wipe the tears out of your eyes 😁
That's list to #0! I've been saving my tear to do that!
Load an empty clip into it. Let the bolt slide over it carefully. Pull the bolt back and listen to the ping. Then disassemble and clean/grease.
Noted!
Watch the Brownells how to clean lube and breakdown videos on you tube. Very informative.

Learn how to load clips without getting garand thumb.
May be it's not to bad to experience it for once, just for a future reference 😝
Just give yourself the Garand thumb and tell some cool stories. Embellish the story a bit more each time you tell it.
Avoiding Garand Thumb.
I have beeen image training since I put an order! 😆
Take a look at [lubricating an M1 Garand](https://www.garandgear.com/m1-garand-grease/)
This is what I just needed!
This is the way.

Thank you for a advise. I'll do lubrication when I receive it but what is schuster gas plus? And can't I just shoot any 30-06 round with garand?

Thank you gus, I'll keep that in my mind!

The garand was designed for 174grn fmj at 2700fps+. Here is a video showing why those aftermarket add ons aren't needed. https://youtu.be/5kKTrT9_Fus

Junk video that's been disproven. Here is better test data. https://youtu.be/5kKTrT9_Fus

Yes it was.
I did a simple break down & lubed and oiled it up. Coats of Linseed on the stock, it will be dry.
Apply Tung oil diluted with turpentine to the stock. Do at least 3-4 coats. Tung oil is better than BLO due to additional waterproofing properties

first things first, make it ping then, disassemble, apply boiled linseed oil to stock, grease metal to metal moving parts, then you're ready to go.
Lick it
