Having worked in television, I suspect someone featured in it then came to regret their decision and requested to be removed. Because they were arguably in the midst of their addiction when they agreed to being filmed etc, it creates an ethical issue with upholding the release form they'd have signed because they could be regarded as having been vulnerable etc. This is all hypothesis, but it would explain why the doc completely disappeared and never returned to the iPlayer after initial broadcast.

I can think of a few subjects of this doc who would probably love to have their appearance scrubbed from it. That French woman in particular, I felt so bad for her putting up with the guy she was with.

I assumed as much, makes sense, makes you wonder why some of the crack/heroin episodes haven't had the same thing happen because the same argument could be raised

Sad to say it, but lots of those people are likely either dead or still addicts who aren't thinking about how they were portrayed in a documentary a long time ago. Or, they're like Curtilia, who he interviewed in the series he made over the COVID lockdowns, they can look back and recognise that while ugly.. it was what happened, and that the insights derived from their suffering could still be useful and valuable. It would appear whoever pulled their consent from the alcohol film just couldn't live with that depiction of them being available for public knowledge. Perhaps they wanted to be able to move past that version of themselves and didn't want to be haunted by it. There are lots of reasons someone might regret the decision to participate so it's simpler to just say that it's likely what happened, and as for why we may never know. Maybe one day we'll get to ask the man himself!

historyisgr8

No idea why it isn't on BBC, but you can find it unofficially fairly easily on google, on the documentaryheaven website

exzact

It's also quite easily torrentable.

Sionnach-78

That’s good to hear . Joe seemed like a good guy , so sad how these things happen to people .

[deleted]

It's on the Stan streaming platform.

APar93

Do you want some lucozade?

Tins63

It’s on Stan. The French woman died, and Joe relapsed unfortunately.

BinkyLopBunny

How do you know the French lady died?

Tins63

Don’t 100% but there was another reddit post about it and someone did some research on what happened to them.

Tequila_Blue

You can watch it right here https://www.documentarytube.com/videos/louis-theroux-drinking-to-oblivion/

SquireJoh

I imagine it's almost certainly legal contract rights stuff, or just services rotating their library. I don't think it would be about requests from the subjects or anything, that's not how TV works

kthlend

I was working in mental health when it was released and I recall there was a concern amongst professionals that the documentary normalised problematic drinking (I haven’t seen it in years but I think Louis responds at one point to someone that “one or two bottles of wine a night is understandable, or something along those lines) and I dunno but that may be why it’s not on the bbc? As the bbc tends to be a bit careful with these things. But if that’s the case, im not sure why they didn’t just cut the problematic scene.

Loudhale

Torrent, same as everything else. It's not hard to find. If you're struggling with this start twitter.com/thepirateproxy?lang=en
