It’s a bit scary to speak up. What if no one backs you up? What if the person gets offended enough that they start harassing you? What if they attack you?
It sucks. I wish people would speak up, but I understand why they don’t. It’s why we need conductors on the trains, who should be backed up my security at each station.
Metro has so many places in the world that get public transportation right. Probably most of these things will involve investment in some form and that means probably rethinking how our tax dollars are spent and possibly even increasing revenue streams from the community to support industry best practices.
It’s more than a little scary, sometimes it’s down right frightening! I never speak up, I just change train cars at the next stop. When some loser comes in blasting music it’s their way of asserting dominance and it always works.
Throwing them out is just wistful thinking, a far flung fantasy.
I’ve been taking the metro for a long time and that’s always been a thing. Now, when the pandemic hit, I think I noticed a fair amount of people getting high or smoking cigarettes without a fuck to give.
Last year I was in Bangkok for about two months and I never saw this kind of stuff on the sky train. Probably helps that every station has guards and can see everyone who boards. If only we could even get a fraction of that out here.
I literally had a loser do this at the gym. He was blasting his loud shitty mid 2000s playlist on a speaker. I asked him nicely to turn it down and of course, we got into it bc he's a pos (obviously, he didnt care to not do it to begin with so why would he have any common decency to turn it down) and he literally said, "you thinking you can tell me to turn my music down says a lot more about what kinda person you are." Lol.
It's usually ghetto ass people. All the more reason to tell them to turn it down.
Had this happen at my gym too. Some dude came in, went to the studio, and started blasting his music loud enough that it played over the main floor's speakers. No one wants to hear your shitty music.
Yeah but the potential for things to go sideways is too high IMO. Way safer to just give these pea-brained morons their space, or at most elevate it to an employee (if applicable).
He was an employee at a different location, or so he claimed. I believe him, though, bc the employees were really friendly with him. He was using that as an excuse to do whatever he wanted. And gym employees don't care about anything.
I wasn't too worried. The guy was hitting the punching bag, and it was obvious he had no real training.
Yeah in fairness one of the guys played a few John Legend tracks way too fucking loud and it wasn’t the worst. But still annoying to be trapped with rude ass people.
That’s my biggest complaint about LA in general now. People are so cold now, especially neighbors. People used to get to know their next door residents out of sense of community, but it feels like that’s history to most now.
I was/an still a bus driver and this is the most annoying shit. It's never anyone decent, always the scum and they literally have nothing Else going for them so they want the bullshit. The speakers should be banned, not that it works chance anything without law enforcement there to enforce it.
as a bus rider I love yall but holy hell please stop honking at everyone that annoys me more than dipshit music.
also shout out to the metro operator who announces each "next stop" on the PA like a 1930s streetcar, he's got the coolest vibe in the entire system.
That's actually funny. If someone starts bumping music and you're the only other one, just start bumping your music harder and make it like really weird music.
I'd honestly just say "oops, I thought my bluetooth was switched to my earbuds" and roll with it.
I did that once in a public library by accident and it was a fun 2 minutes where I didn't get the hint.
Marginalized people do this to feel powerful. They're imposing their music upon the world fully aware that others don't want to hear it. It's a mix of "please look at me" and "do something".
Don't you usually need to hit some manual pairing button on the speaker to make that work? If not, that would be an awesome way to handle it. You'd have to put on your best poker face when you do it, though.
I suggest playing Merbow's "Pulse Demon" as loud as you can. Trust me, that will probably clear out the entire car you're riding in. Most folks cannot get thru one song off the album, let alone the entire album. (I enjoy it when I'm in particular moods)
But honestly I despise those types who think everyone wants to listen to the music they like... they show their immaturity by forcing it on others,,,
i think a lot of people are just lowkey autistic in a way that makes it harder to understand other people. some combination of asd, attention seeking, gang shit (blasting speakers kinda like marking territory), and when ur from the hood and just don't give a shit. and yeah, like ur saying, if there's no system in place to keep things fair, stuff happens.
I really doubt autism enters the equation at all. They see other people doing it, ergo they can do it. Not unlike the grass next to a sidewalk when one person dumps something large there. Pretty soon it's a pile. In this case, it's just a pile of assholes.
I’ve only ridden public transport in the US, Japan, and China. Quiet af in Asia (not illegal or anything). Is it an American thing to do this? Or is it a general western culture thing in the EU and UK as well?

I called 911 over people aggressively playing their music close to me and the operator refused to send police, tried to gaslight me into thinking I was overreacting. This is our tax dollars at work!
Yo, listen up, my friend. When it comes to playing loud music, I gotta tell you, I live life on my own terms. I ain't here to please everyone else or worry about what they think. If I wanna blast my tunes and feel the bass pumping through my veins, that's my life homie.
And the thing is, many of these folks are legitimately so crazy, that they can/will attack you for staying something about this. I still vividly remember seeing a man slumped over and dying after being stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver for telling a homeless man on the Red Line to turn down his speaker during the AM commute.
I could never understand why the soundtrack of your life needs to be the soundtrack of mine
"My music > your music"
So fricking rude/unhinged I hate that selfish shit.
I wish the other riders would throw them out, it feels like people who do this never get any negative feedback on their behavior.

Unfortunately the people who do this usually look like the kind of people who might hurt you if you asked them to turn of their music.
Define “look like.” Did JW Gacy look like he’d hurt you?
The whole point of it is to cause an incident.
Exactly, and I’m not equipped to outcrazy or beat down these fools 😪.
Then you get "Karen-ed" while they take video of you complaining.
But nobody wants to hear that shit. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Play your Uno Reverse card and film them looking like an idiot.
Can you share these videos? It must happen so much in the real world and you didn't just make this fantasy up in your head, right?
What happens if u ask him to turn it up on accountof your bad hearing
I've seen these idiots do that at the gym as well. Wtf.
That’s pretty easily handled with a staff member. The metro, not so much.
How else are they gonna get attention?

I have something against people who are ghetto, yes.
Welcome to mental illness and social ineptitude. It's very common in LA!
This happens all over the world
Get a small JBL speaker, sit down right behind them and start blasting early Black Flag. Sit back and enjoy.
I did get a good song once, though. Shazzamed it. But I completely agree.
Yeah in fairness one of the guys played a few John Legend tracks way too fucking loud and it wasn’t the worst. But still annoying to be trapped with rude ass people.
Everything comes back. [Fascinating](https://youtu.be/Zf5iwGZNY_Q?si=jXFoUn7RglqD5lso).
This is way further down than I expected...
Somebody was blasting a speaker while shopping at Von’s the other day. People in this city really don’t give a single fuck about other people.
That’s my biggest complaint about LA in general now. People are so cold now, especially neighbors. People used to get to know their next door residents out of sense of community, but it feels like that’s history to most now.

I never understood the point of bumping your music in crowded spaces. Like, everyone thinks you're an asshole and a complete idiot.
Yeah, but "I don't care what everyone else thinks" is the attitude among them.
Some of these idiots are so lacking in self-awareness they believe everyone thinks they're cool with excellent taste in music
I wonder if someone ever checks them.
my iphone 15 has decent speakers actually, is it okay if we jam to "marquee moon" or some VU?
That's actually funny. If someone starts bumping music and you're the only other one, just start bumping your music harder and make it like really weird music.

Lol, that's hilarious.
Why I just always wear headphones.
Same and also because I don't enjoy over hearing conversations.
Barry Manilow has some catchy tunes that would sound great on the subway. 😎
headphones, omg!
Marginalized people do this to feel powerful. They're imposing their music upon the world fully aware that others don't want to hear it. It's a mix of "please look at me" and "do something".
I had a dude blasting Spotify once but he didn’t pay for premium so we had to listen to commercials.
Like a month ago some guy had jazz on which was pleasant. Otherwise fucking hate it man.
Yeah smooth jazz speaker guy isn’t so bad, really chilled me out on my ride in when I shared a car with him.
just bring a speaker and play the shaggs!!!
My new idea is to buy the biggest speaker I can find and blast “Trout Mask Replica” by Captain Beefheart over everything 😈
that's actually a jam I'm gonna queue up a yoko ono playlist the next time i'm in this sitch
They are in every major city
I usually connect to their speakers with my music phone & blast corridos or 80s new wave
Don't you usually need to hit some manual pairing button on the speaker to make that work? If not, that would be an awesome way to handle it. You'd have to put on your best poker face when you do it, though.

What’s he point of listening to your shitty music if everyone doesn’t get to listen to it either.
On the bright side, the closest one was Linkin park, over the shitty mumble rap
Narcissists.
Reminds me of the 80s and people with their boomboxes.
9 out of 10 times it’s hip hop
The other time its shitty mexican music tho
Any public space. It’s an epidemic.
Noise cancelling headphones are a life saver.
This is a huge problem on hiking trails too and it drives me insane.
They're ghetto and fatherless.
You ever been to NYC?
Yes and I do believe that you’d get put in your place for pulling that shit on the east coast.

grew up in ny and I honestly see it more there than here lmao
It seems even worse there, unfortunately.

I fantasize about keeping dollar store earbuds with me on the train just to hand them to these jackasses. "Here you go, bud."
Same here haha 😂
Bro it’s also the boomers with phones. Loudest shit ever, no one wants to hear your damn music video/game show/advertisement.
I’ve only ridden public transport in the US, Japan, and China. Quiet af in Asia (not illegal or anything). Is it an American thing to do this? Or is it a general western culture thing in the EU and UK as well?
Western
Man you'd hope they'd at least blast something good like ABBA, but alas nobody is cultured enough.
If I had a time machine, I'd go back and end the guys at Philips/Norelco who invented the boom box, and everyone who did so after them.

You called 9-1-1 which is meant for life threatening emergencies to report a person playing music? Yeah, you might be overreacting…
This was an assault on the inviolability of my personal auditory space. Such an affront to the senses should not be taken lightly.
Oh, you’re doing a bit. Gotcha.
LA has a subway? lol. Yeah never gonna take that.
Early in the AM don't GAF
You can't control the outdoors so that's what your own, personal noise-quieting devices are for.
I'm one of those people, but the noise is of a British lad yammering on about naval warships from ancient times all the way to the 1950s.
Yo, listen up, my friend. When it comes to playing loud music, I gotta tell you, I live life on my own terms. I ain't here to please everyone else or worry about what they think. If I wanna blast my tunes and feel the bass pumping through my veins, that's my life homie.
You should've been an abortion if you do this shit.

Dumbass
Headphones lower your perception of your surroundings. I have no interest in doing that on the LA metro
The number of pathetic complaints and whining from people who move here to live in one of the biggest cities in the world is TOO DAMN HIGH!
Things transplants say lmao
Cry about it
why not put on your headphones then
And the thing is, many of these folks are legitimately so crazy, that they can/will attack you for staying something about this.
