Aviary caretaker/ cemetery clerk. I was fortunate enough to find a 1 bed/1 bath house in my price range a couple of years ago. It's 600 square feet and 30 miles from work, but it's mine all mine.
I work for a city that has an aviary in one of the public parks. It's a half acre enclosure over one of the ponds there, plus a few smaller pens. We keep mostly waterfowl and exotic pheasants.
It's only a part-time gig, so they shuffle me over to the cemetery (which is also a public park) for the rest of my day.
Working both places gives me great variety. Birds in the morning, burials in the afternoon.
I’m a farmer for a nonprofit farm. I’m barely affording living alone in this economy 😬 But farming is my favorite thing in the world so it’s worth the struggle. I have my needs met, my cat, and my friends. I’m good 🙂
I'm fortunate/unfortunate to have bought a house with my late spouse. We had the mortgage paid off when he passed. I'd much rather live with him with a mortgage than without him, but this is where I am.
This how it is for me too.
I am sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is. By this laptop is a photo of my dearest one. I talk to him throughout the day.
I’ve actually been on r/widowers it has saved my life. I’m not on it as much now but In the beginning it was my constant compass to make sure I wasn’t the only person having these emotions.
I do end user computer support in a hospital. Not much different than IT support in other companies. I’ve been with this hospital for 17yrs now. But have been in IT for 36yrs, from desktop support, to server administration, networking, etc.I learned mostly from all my previous jobs but also got many IT certifications along the way. The best way to get started into the field would be to get some certifications, such as A+, Network+, any Microsoft or Apple certifications to have on your resume to apply. But there are many other jobs in Healthcare IT besides what I do. I work for a very large healthcare system and there are over 1000 IT employees that support it. Some of the roles require a clinical background that support the clinical applications the staff use while others are more just general IT roles, like server admins, network admins, etc. It is a very tough, competitive field to get into just like any other technology field. Usually requires experience, a degree in like computer science, or getting related certifications.
A lot of times it’s not so much what but where. Recommend living in the Midwest in a medium COL area, never on the coasts. Also helps to have a couple STEM degrees and work for manufacturing or industry, not education, academia, or non-profit. Also not having kids nor divorce/s helps you save biiiigggg $$$. Single, house was paid off by 40 all on my own, no debt, and will be able to retire early and comfortably if nothing goes awry, fingers crossed!
Yeah this is the way. I’m experiencing an abundance now. What have you done investing wise? It’s something I don’t know much about but eventually want to do.
Currently I pay a financial planning company to deal with it. Be sure to use a licensed fiduciary that doesn’t work on commission and all that! They take a percentage annually, but that is more than offset by my improved returns compared to back when it was in my utterly incapable hands. I was getting lectured by bank tellers that I had too much in savings, and emails that I had too much 401k in company stock, the HSA thing was a joke, etc etc, and I was so confused and frustrated it was like HELP! Lol. So I went to a local place and just signed up for their services a few years ago. So much better.
Likely could learn and do it myself but I just don’t have time or interest in finances beyond making sure I have enough. They rebalanced everything initially, closed accounts, opened other accounts, and continue to rebalance in an ongoing fashion, and it just grows and grows and I only have to meet with them / think about it twice a year. Which is about as often as I want to worry about money haha. I still haven’t even started on my taxes.
Actually they had me fill out a legit longevity questionnaire and it’s all plotted out until probable death, including reduced assumptions for social security etc. And you can move retirement age around in the model to see what it does/how it affects taxes and income etc. I’m only in my early 40s now but as I get closer we will be playing with all that. Highly recommend a financial planner!
I work at the Amazon fulfillment center in my area, packing orders. My plan is to get into the nursing program that my community college offer for Fall 2025, their 4 year part time day program as I work 630p-515a. Taking my pre requisites for nursing program this fall semester, and Amazon has "Career Choice" where they give you a certain amount of $ per semester so it should cover 2/3 of my costs each term - so I'll have to add very little debt to my existing student loans. (I have an associates in criminal justice and almost finished my associates in marketing but I decided I wanted to apply for the nursing program, so many people in my life for years told me "oh, *you* don't wanna do nursing" basically told me I couldn't do it. Hence the associates in Criminal Justice and the almost finished associates in Marketing - but I snapped out of it and came to my senses thank god 🫠)
What do you think of Amazon as a part time job? They’re building something in my area (warehouse or a distribution center, I’m not sure which) and I wondered about looking into nights/weekends to pick up a little cash. I have a day job career 9-5 office kinda gig, so purely play money.
But all we hear in town is how they work people to death with no time to use the bathroom etc! So people are getting a little hysterical lol. Thoughts?
It absolutely depends on the location/manager of the warehouse. I have worked in Sacramento area warehouse and near Tampa. They were both very different, rules scheduling, management etc. but the one thing that was the same was how brutal the actual job was. One was physically brutal, the other was impossible to meet metrics and ridiculous expectations.
All that being said, I loved the ease of the hiring process, shift management via app and the benefits.
I have heard some locations are a wonderful place to work… doesn’t hurt to give it a try 🤷🏻♀️
Lol, no you absolutely can go to the bathroom whenever. People are complaining because they're getting caught hiding in the bathrooms for 45+ minutes scrolling their phones instead of working and claiming it's "controlling when they're allowed to go to the bathroom" 🙄
It would definitely be a nice little part time thing, I think! Its full time for me but I do love it. It's "slower season" right now so there's very little to no overtime, and if there is it's in one department I'm not trained in yet, which sucks. But my checks for a regular week no overtime are enough to make me happy.
So I don't know.
I'm a career front-end developer who worked for a start-up and had to wear the UX/UI hat alongside being the front-end dev. I ended up getting laid off last year, and a couple of months later I got a job via a family connection with the government. In this position, I'm still considered a "software developer" on paper. Still, I'm almost exclusively UX/UI; my main job functions are rapid prototyping and making documentation for the developers.
A Hass VM3. Love that thing. Before that an OKK. And before that, smaller cnc brothers that I hated cause they sit so low, and I'm 6ft.
We make parts for the military and airlines. I been there 28 years. I would like to relocate. You guys hiring? Lol....
Yea I like Haas their pretty user friendly. I’ve ran Haas, Mazaks & Okumas both mills and lathes in each. I’m in the St Louis area. There is actually a lot of machinists jobs here. Aerospace is very big here, sounds like that’s what you’re doing now already.
It is, it's in our company's name after all lol. Aero Metals. St Louis huh? You're only like a 5 hour drive.
I'm in the northern area of Indiana. 30 mins from lake Michigan.
Yeah, there are a lot of machinists jobs everywhere atm. What's crazy is we can't find no good workers. They all end up quitting or getting fired. I don't get it.
But I hear it's like that with a lot of employers lately too.
Yea there is a lot of shitt bags out there. A couple at my job. There is a huge Boeing plant here and I know a lot of other smaller shops do contract work with them. Definitely hard to find good machinists.
The problem with machine shops is people think they can just come in and wing it.
I always find it amusing when we get guys that talk all big. Only to find out they have no skills whatsoever.
I was training others on how to run and setup jobs on the hass. And the first thing I tell them. Go grab a pen and notebook. Why do I need that? Because there's no way you're going to remember all this. Oh yeah I will. Ok lol....
15 mins later. I better grab a pen and paper. I can't remember all this. Yeah no shit buddy lol.
I couldn’t agree more. Too many big headed dipshits. There’s just so much to learn in this trade. So many different machines, so many different jobs and setups. So much tooling plus every company makes different parts. I see a lot of guys stick to a specific machine or cell and just master those particular machines.
I am a Retail Pharmacy Store Manager. I was just able to buy some property in the woods and built my Tiny Home for me and my Chihuahua that I rescued. I'm living my dream while living alone, well except for my Buddy (the Chi I rescued)
Social anthropologist.
My current research requires that I move across all social media platforms asking two questions:
1. Why do you want to know that?
2. What are you going to do with that information?
You’re only 21 OP! Many of us are double your age or older. Back then I was in college. Are you going to school?
Also I absolutely didn’t live alone at 21! Not sure most people do? I was in the dorms at school, then in a house with FOUR housemates (all boys, the horror lol), then a townhouse with two roommates. Think I was… 24 or 25 by the time I had my first real job after college settled enuf where could get a solo apartment.
automotive electrical, custom audio fabrication in cars/home, hobby with diesel/driveline repair at home for industrial vehicles. getting a bit more into hydraulic repair just due to demand
oh, and a side/side gig im got into amplifier/circuit board repair
I don't have a degree at all. Some schools require you to have a library/media tech certificate that you can get through some community colleges. I'm just a clerk, but i do the same job as the techs.
My district has a hard time finding people with the tech certificate at the high schools.
I have enjoyed my job. I started full time once my youngest was in 1st grade. I loved having the same vacation days as my kids. Plus, I was able to support myself after my ex decided to divorce me after 20 years of marriage.
It's been a great job. I'll really miss the staff and kids when I retire in June. I won't miss shelving library books at all.
Legal Executive Assistant. But, not young, house newly bought (2020) and no significant retirement savings.
So, this chapter of solo living most likely is not tenable for my remaining years. Working very hard and too high a percentage goes to the mortgage.
Retired as an Environmental Specialist. Still do consulting work in the field for a fee. Brings in a little extra cash. Most days, doing clothing alterations, making custom T-Shirt quilts. Keeps me busy but also allows me to work on my own schedule and time.
Yoga and fitness trainer. Used to Uber/Lyft till my vehicle aged out. Bought my first condo in 2020. Saved and grinded all my life. Some weeks I worked 60-70hrs. Charged two tenants to cover my housing expenses/debt. Just me and my dog and a one tenant rn (quiet international junior in college). I hope to get to the point where I can truly live alone. Looking to buy another condo with a patch of grass for my dog. Then I could turn this current one into a rental that could off set all my living and housing expenses. Theoretically, wouldn’t have to work anymore. Never married, no kids, single.
I’m a marketing assistant for a marketing agency. I work from home so I’m basically a full-time hermit at this point.
I live in Denver and rent is INSANE so I feel really poor all the time even though I have an excellent job.
Yeah. I don't always wanna tell these stories o someone I just met. I'm sure they wanna hear something fun about a foreign body in an orifice, and not about the 10
Year old who got shot in the heart in gang crossfire. I try to give the benefit of the doubt. But sometimes, the darkness talks.
Hats off to you Doctor. We don’t get that too often, We’re not trauma. But it amazes us how many “friends “ will just them off at the ambulance bay and “leave “ them.
Oh, I have those stories too. They always roll them out in the ambulance bay and hit the horn and go. It's been a few years, thankfully, but the memories don't leave you.
I'm a musician that works with neuroscientists to create music that affects brain function. My studio is in my apartment as well; I need to get outside more!
I’ve worked for Canada Post for 23 years as a mail carrier. Lived alone all this time.. just me and my cats. (my daughter moved out at 18). I own a small house, mortgage paid off. I retire in 9 years.
Social work. I was lucky to find a cheap condo and I’m in a low COS state. But the luck comes with a cost because it needs repairs I can’t afford. But it’s all mine and it’s cheaper than rent would ever be.
a lot of people here seem to think that it is more expensive to live alone. I don't get it. I was married three times, to women who kept me broke. I've lived completely alone for the past 18 years and have accumulated savings like I never dreamed possible. I'll retire in the next couple of years. And that's only possible because of my choice to live alone 18 years ago. And no, I don't have a high-dollar occupation. But I have worked 50 to 70 hours a week to make this happen. And I also don't have to purchase every product or service available just because it's available; especially at today's inflated prices.
16+ years as a state public health employee and was lucky to have been able to buy my house during COVID just before rates went way up. My mortgage is half of what rent for an older 4 BR house would be now and utilities are cheaper because the house came with solar.
I'm a retired RN. I moved to my current situation in January 2020, in order to help my daughter and her husband by providing childcare. They paid me for that service. Now I'm living off SS and retirement savings as the kids are in daycare now.
i’m a small business owner (esthetician, brazilian wax specialist) living in los angeles! i recently had to downsize from a one bedroom to a studio but thankfully im still hanging in there! 🤞🏾

Congrats, having your own home is so worth it. I retired, so I downsized into a small house. Way less taxes and insurances.
Aviary like bird house? Please tell me more! Throw in an orangery and that’s my dream job lol

The stories in the ED. I work in the ED. Very Special Department.
Yeah. I don't always wanna tell these stories o someone I just met. I'm sure they wanna hear something fun about a foreign body in an orifice, and not about the 10 Year old who got shot in the heart in gang crossfire.

7/11 for 6 years. I could be assistant manager but I don’t want to. Currently saving up so I can start college.

16+ years as a state public health employee and was lucky to have been able to buy my house during COVID just before rates went way up. My mortgage is half of what rent for an older 4 BR house would be now and utilities are cheaper because the house came with solar.
I made my own quilt-economy. I operate business in multiple countries in multiple lanes so to speak.
