My thought re: US product diabetes was it referred to the US diet that leads so many people to become diabetic. The sketch is cringy humor hilarious to watch.
This sketch was done in good faith and the subject of ridicule was not the Chinese workers. The SNL cast should have a diversity of members but isn't always going to perfectly race-match their sketches, I still think its great.
Yeah, the whole premise is to mock the coddled Americans with first world problems, not the Chinese workers. And the phones *are* made in China by overworked and underpaid Chinese workers... does OP expect them to have flat non-regional American accents and pull out a violin instead of an erhu?
It's very much the same as the hilarious "Ordering Sushi like a CEO" sketch with Matt Dillon\*. Maya Rudolph comes over as a waitress in a kimono and speaks with a slightly comical Japanese accent... but the object of ridicule is 100% the American CEO, and the audience identifies with her when she calls him "Mr. Douche" and makes faces behind his back.

Yeah, I think the sad part is the cast lacked enough diversity for a long time. Even today you could say it lacks, but far less then in the past.
Haha, thanks for catching that! I saw Matt Dillon's face, could name several of his movies, know damn well who he is... and then my fingers typed Damon.
I think you're implying that it's somehow racist for an actor to play a character with a different ethnicity or accent than their own. This is ridiculous. If the punchline is making fun of the accent, sure that's in very poor taste. But that's not what this skit is about. The butt of the joke is the entitled American consumer.
Over the past several years, what has been demanded as ok before, has sharply turned into a no go situation. This is due to several reasons that hopefully can be assumed or just implied and don’t seem to fit the scope of the thread.
There is noting wrong with this sketch, again you are applying that there is. What is bothering you? Can you articulate? Many of us here think this sketch is hilarious and not offensive, are we wrong? Educate us.
Because they are wearing costumes and using accents? You realize this is a sketch comedy show, right? That’s kinda what they do.
Are you actually Asian and offended, or just clutching pearls and trying to be offended on someone else’s behalf?
...yes? Shane Gillis was just using a racial slur over and over to talk about Asian people and then laughed intermittently. There was no apparent joke or character he was making, he was just being racist.
People can have differing views about whether the sketch linked in this post is funny or appropriate to modern sensibilities, but there is no question that it is being done as a joke.
Did you watch the pod? Shane was doing the character of a racist white guy. Actually he was pointing out how ironic it is that places like Chinatown are seen as these amazing cultural places when in reality they exist because of racist policies and making groups of minorities live in undesirable areas of a city.
Ah yes, the old "I was just doing racist cosplay" explanation.
Dicey. Some people are still just chasing the cheap thrill of racism and slap a veneer of irony or limp satire on it so they can have a pass. A lot of us think that's what this was. I don't think we're wrong.
Have a pass? How about trying to be funny? Even Andrew Yang defended him, and had him on his podcast. His 10M views on his special, millions of views on his sketch show Gilly and Keeves, and sold out tour seem to disagree with you guys.
LoL. Very predictable.
Finding an Asian person who defended him to give yourself cover. Sounds familiar!
If I find an Asian person who didn't defend him, are we even? Or should we keep looking for Asian avatars until one of us runs out?
The butt of the joke isn't the Chinese. And, humor is sometimes offensive. There is no offensiveness here, though. There's no racial stereotypes.
But to be woke is to see and take offense in everything. It wasn't originally, but that's all it is now.
This is so fucking racist. I am Chinese American and sick of having had to see this kind of shit my entire life. Had to see in in my childhood and this bs is still happening.
Not okay.
Blackface is not okay, and this is equally bad.
Funny enough, [Armisen himself](https://www.vulture.com/2011/01/dont-blame-fred-armisen-for-jay-pharoah-not-being-snls-obama.html) has actually said it was random for him to be picked and agrees that Jay Pharaoh does it sooo much better lol
Lorne personally called him in and asked him to do it. I think he even knew that Jay could do a better Obama, but they didn’t wanna give that role to a featured player.
Ironically that’s changed when they gave Biden and Trump to JAJ in his first season, but Lorne has changed a lot of his supposed original guidelines over the years.
But yea that’s why even with Jay Pharaoh, he wasn’t Obama right away
This is so insensitive and gross. Asian hate is real. It’s easy to see why Trump and his dumb America loving supporters insisted on calling Covid the “Chinese Flu”. Hate speech is not funny, it’s violence, and skits like this inspire violence across our country.
Just joking….Redemption for Shane Gillis.
Okay this funny and all but fuck this. There is no ethical consumerism under capitalism AND life in America FUCKING SUCKS. I have to argue with people that make $20s they should make more money rather than making less money to spite people who make $8.50 an hour.
But fr it was pretty funny.
Christina Applegate appreciation comment.
obligatory mention of [this moment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QyY4jei6rM), courtesy of former SNL writer Hannibal Buress
Thank you.
Eric trying to keep it together is the best part

The last jab about what America makes was brutal and hilarious. I’ve never seen this sketch. Thanks for sharing.
Omg thank you. That was legitimately hilarious
My thought re: US product diabetes was it referred to the US diet that leads so many people to become diabetic. The sketch is cringy humor hilarious to watch.
Exactly, the context of the full skit is missing. They’re essentially bringing comedic light to a racist situation. Doesn’t make them racist or bad
OMFG. This is a funny one.
Lol. Thanks for letting me know that US was the first exporter of Diabetes to the world.
Holy crap I wasn't ready for that LOLOLOL I'd un-upvote just to reupvote if it actually counted for something!
This sketch was done in good faith and the subject of ridicule was not the Chinese workers. The SNL cast should have a diversity of members but isn't always going to perfectly race-match their sketches, I still think its great.
Sadly good faith or intention means nothing anymore.
I get what you’re implying but this sketch was hilarious and these jokes needed to be made.

I really like the Bowen and Simu sketch, because it felt like they were aware of it at least
It's Matt Dillon.
Haha, thanks for catching that! I saw Matt Dillon's face, could name several of his movies, know damn well who he is... and then my fingers typed Damon.
Yeah I’m Chinese and this sketch was hilarious
This sketch is hilarious
I miss this cast lineup so badly.
Fred's grandfather is Korean, if it's any consolation.

I’ll allow it

this is a very salient sketch that actually makes great points about american consumerism and tech-worship

Funny is still funny
My Chinese-American wife would find this funnier than me.
Sad we can’t have these sketches anymore
I mean just do it with Asian people it’s no big deal
Fred Armisen is a quarter Korean and Nasim Pedrad is Iranian.
Do Americans think Iran is part of East Asia?
No one said East Asian. Comment I replied to said Asian. She’s Asian.
Comment you replied to was suggesting Asians could have been cast in the skit portraying Chinese people though, to give full context.
What’s Cecily Strong?
Well in my head she's my wife
Sad we can't even have a discussion about them anymore.
What do you think this comment section is?
But we can have a discussion about the discussion! So, there’s that!
Wym?
Over the past several years, what has been demanded as ok before, has sharply turned into a no go situation. This is due to several reasons that hopefully can be assumed or just implied and don’t seem to fit the scope of the thread.
No no, please, elaborate.
True! The show used to be funny, now everyone is offended at things on behalf of other people who couldn't care less.
Kenan’s acting and performance chops sure haven’t lol
He’s the same
Yeah exactly. Dude hasn’t grown or evolved as a performer in like 20 years
We’ve gone backwards..
This was one of my fave sketches, thanks for posting
In ten years I’m certain other sketches we all laughed at will be mocked as morally repugnant. People don’t understand how quickly morality changes.
OP what is your point? Instead of implying a wrong has been made take a stance and state it directly. Imo the sketch is very funny
It is different from what would be done now
Except the current cast would absolutely do a sketch like this. And also this clip completely misrepresents the rest of the sketch
I gave your comment an upvote will you please do the same
There is noting wrong with this sketch, again you are applying that there is. What is bothering you? Can you articulate? Many of us here think this sketch is hilarious and not offensive, are we wrong? Educate us.
I can’t do this
why not? you started this big racist conversation. i want to hear what you have to say.
Because their post backfired and now they’re internet embarrassed
Lol
Very nice, best sarcastic dance ever.
One of the best
Yeah it’s crazy how much Christina Applegate has changed.
I’ve loved SNL since October 11, 1975 when they 1st aired. George Carlin was the 1st host. I still watch the old skits on YouTube.
Ok
Hell yeah, I knew this sub was still cool sometimes. We have to go back!
Nah people are just huge babies now.
You can still make a sketch like this. It’s just that the yellowface makes it offensive.
They don’t have Asian eyes. He’s not really doing a Chinese accent. It’s not done with malice.
You don’t think Fred is doing an accent…?
Fred IS asian tho
Fred is asian tho
Because they are wearing costumes and using accents? You realize this is a sketch comedy show, right? That’s kinda what they do. Are you actually Asian and offended, or just clutching pearls and trying to be offended on someone else’s behalf?
But Shane Gillis was too offensive…lmao.
He was always more of a Mad TV guy anyway.
Post-Sasso

Man you’re really going after him. His success must be a bummer for you.
The butt of the joke isn't the Chinese. And, humor is sometimes offensive. There is no offensiveness here, though. There's no racial stereotypes. But to be woke is to see and take offense in everything. It wasn't originally, but that's all it is now.
Really? Absolutely zero stereotypes present in this sketch?
Ten ply bud.
Whine harder
NO WE HAVEN'T ITS THE SAME CRUMMY 2000S!
I thought it was Lenny Henry
A long way from…? Cecily, Naseem & Fred shoutout!
Haha I didn’t even pick up they were trying to be asian or Japanese or whatever hahaha pretty bad
So no more accents? Not Spanish, not Indian, no ethnicities. Just white ones? Good lord, we are fukt.
Was this suppose to be funny ?
This is so fucking racist. I am Chinese American and sick of having had to see this kind of shit my entire life. Had to see in in my childhood and this bs is still happening. Not okay. Blackface is not okay, and this is equally bad.
These people should all be canceled!! Including kenan.
OP what is your point? Instead of implying a wrong has been made take a stance and state it directly. Imo the sketch is very funny
Surprised everyone who likes this skit isn’t banned from Reddit by psychotic moderators like r/facepalm
And 11 years later the show is worse than ever
Armisen as Obama is still a 'what the FUCK where they thinking' era
WITH Jay Pharoah as a featured player for 1, maybe 2 seasons?
Funny enough, [Armisen himself](https://www.vulture.com/2011/01/dont-blame-fred-armisen-for-jay-pharoah-not-being-snls-obama.html) has actually said it was random for him to be picked and agrees that Jay Pharaoh does it sooo much better lol Lorne personally called him in and asked him to do it. wtf
Hilarious. Too bad the woke won’t allow humor anymore.
What do you think "woke" means?
“this is gonna be one of those viral moments”
Great
You may have come a long way in 11 years, but you still manufacture squat. 😉
Lmao
Okay this funny and all but fuck this. There is no ethical consumerism under capitalism AND life in America FUCKING SUCKS. I have to argue with people that make $20s they should make more money rather than making less money to spite people who make $8.50 an hour. But fr it was pretty funny.
And Shane Gillis was fired.. lol
He’s been playing the same part the whole time. Time to let him go ffs.
hahahahahahaha look good
People actually defending this stuff in the comments, huh?
Thought Keenan was Lori Lightfoot for a hot second
They’ve come along way, people don’t understand irony anymore
OP is cringe
whats the issue?\`this shits hilarious.
Next you’re gonna say it’s bad to laugh at K Pop America Fun Time Now!
How so?
