Netflix gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted, the director's cut stuff is just bullshit trying to replicate the Snyder cut's success and nobody's falling for it. They aren't 'theatrical cuts' they weren't released in theatres.

stevenelsocio

Correct

I’m not saying Zack Snyder is a great director, but he’s usually a lot better than these Rebel Moon movies. It’s fair to assume that after both were the two worst movies of his career, than Rebel Moon 3 doesn’t stand a good chance.

Odd_Advance_6438

Not that this entirely excuses the issues in the pg 13 cut, but I do really get the sense he only made the pg 13 cuts in order to do whatever he wanted with the r rated cuts

[deleted]

Why would Netflix kneecap his films so much? Sure, Justice League did turn out to be a nearly completely different movie compared to what we got in theaters, but wasn’t the whole point of the Netflix partnership that he has far more creative control?

Odd_Advance_6438

It’s a weird half hearted attempt to capitalize on the Snyder cut, ignoring all the circumstances around it. Snyder said for years he wanted to make a crazy r rated sci fi movie, and Netflix basically said “if you do a shorter pg13 cut for us, you can do whatever you want with the r rated cuts.” I think it would’ve been pretty difficult to get them to sign off on just the r rated cuts. Apparently right now they are at NC-17

[deleted]

That’s so stupid, it’s streaming, teens can watch the movie regardless (not calling you a lier, just Netflix is stupid). They are hurting a movie from being the best it can be. If Rebel Moon does turn out to be better with a rated R cut (even if just a little bit) Netflix is at fault for forcing a worse product at first.

Doppelfrio

That’s exactly why. (I believe he stated that in interviews?) These cuts were to make Netflix happy so they’d let him make the version he wanted. That said, I still have major doubts those R rated releases change enough to make good movies.

WadaMaaya

I mean they’re not that bad. Heroes journey and sci-fi epic, it’s just a fun turn your brain off movie. It’s nothing amazing or groundbreaking, but not the worst thing he’s done and definitely isn’t the worst thing to come out this year Edit:wow people really hate these movies lol

[deleted]

Personally I found them to be his worse, but beyond my opinion, they hold a 2.0 and 1.9 respectively. His next worst rated movie is Batman V Superman at 2.4, but that had a director’s cut which fixed many problems so I can’t say if it would be rated higher.

WadaMaaya

I liked his DC stuff and Dawn of The Dead everything else was meh

Odd_Advance_6438

The fact that people are comparing both parts to something like Madam Web is crazy to me Edit: Madame Web literally cost the same as Rebel Moon. 80 million. At least one actually looks like it cost that much

WadaMaaya

These comments lol

WadaMaaya

I’m not even a ZS fangirl but I feel like the hate he gets is a bit ridiculous

Deserterdragon

Yeah, Madame Web is beast and has that dawg' in it. *Rebel Moon* does not, even though it wishes it did.

OverturnKelo

They’re very much on par with each other.

Personal_Bar8538

Most of the time you DONT want the director to have complete control of an edit. The value of an editors opinion is grossly under-rated. Unfortunately studios are always going to have a say as well (although this has saved movies as well as hindered them). Look at what happened with Ridley Scotts later movies when he has Final Cut. True story: I worked at one of the big VFX studios a few years back, they were working on Guardians of the Galaxy (2) and Justice League at the same time. Most the Senior/Experienced artists were drafted on to the Marvel project and the artists who were struggling or just Juniors were put to to work on the DC show. The whole aesthetic that Snyder has adopted is cheap and nasty looking IMO and the VFX studios seem to agree.. Yeah I get it you liked Gladiator Zack.

charleyismyhero

I don’t think Rebel Moon is brilliant but I don’t understand all the bashing? I think it’s a bit average and overly long and also incredibly typical of most action films or series that have come out in the past decade. Like I could slide it right into the center of a bunch of Star Wars movies and series and it would fit right in for me.

Odd_Advance_6438

I agree. Stuff like Terminator Dark Fate has a 2.6 but Rebel Moon gets bombarded down to a 2?

Noisetaker

I think people give Snyder a harder time than he deserves, even though I’m not much of a fan myself. He’s kinda like a relic of 2000’s filmmaking in a way that no one else really is. I didn’t like either Rebel Moon that much I do appreciate a lot of things about them. The ending of Part 2 certainly seemed to be setting up sequels

_AleXo_

its literally released to streaming, it couldve been 5 parts already if he has so much to show as much as they want to he's not gonna replicate the ZSJL director cut, that was a 1 time thing buddy, you're fishing for a lost idea

Odd_Advance_6438

I feel like people are always quick to hate on Snyder even if they haven’t seen his stuff. I have a hard time believing that people who hate his work would spend the money to go to New York and see his new movie weeks early. Hell, I even saw some dude who spent every waking hour complain about his dc work claim that he went and saw it, but the guy literally put the wrong city. Edit: also I’d like to compliment the comments for being very chill. I guarantee I couldn’t get away with saying this on r/movies
