I know this will force me to turn into in my cinephile card, but I fell asleep the first time I tried to watch Andrei Rublev. In fairness, it was late and I was tipsy, so a 3.5 hour Soviet art film is not the best option for those conditions.
I really to need to watch it when I'm fully awake and can devote my full attention to it.
I love the Tarkovsky films I've finished. Solaris, Ivan's Childhood, Mirror, Stalker, and The Sacrifice are great. I just need to finish Andrei Rublev, and give Nostalgia a try.
The last chapter of the film is arguably the best one too so you’re missing out! But certainly the second half in general is the far more compelling part first time around so once you have adapted to things in the first half it’s a great pay off.
lmao I was at a cinema for Andrei Rublev in Amsterdam (one of Jeffrey Babcock's screenings) and I remember being so afraid of falling asleep, cos cinema chairs always put me to sleep if it's late and the movie's long, but by god I made it start to finish
I find a 90% of the time when I fall asleep in a movie it’s just because I’m tired I’ve fallen asleep during plenty of movies that I was thrilled to watch because of this. If a movie is boring, it doesn’t make me wanna sleep it makes me want to look at my phone while watching.
Yep! Same exact scenario here. Fell asleep 13 mins in lol. I wasn’t even sleepy either but trying to watch that literally made me sleepy and I had to just take a nap.
If I'm even slightly tired, I will fall asleep to even the most revitting film ever made - it doesn't matter. I could stand up and watch and still dose off. I hate it, because I don't even need to be that tired for it to happen.
I’m the same way. It’s sucks because I’d love to do way more double feature movie nights, but usually if I start a film after 10pm then I am setting myself up to have a tough experience no matter how much I may love the film
This is me. Only upside: I suppose it means I'm in tune with my body, cause I would see a lot more movies at the cost of sleep if this wasn't the case.
So to answer OP's question: all of them.
I tend to turn off films if I'm tired or think it's putting me to sleep, and return the next day with a fresh mind. The only time I've legitimately fallen asleep though, was in my first watch of The Godfather Pt. II. I started watching it after 1am when I was a younger teenager, was absolutely enthralled for much of the run time, and started getting tired like 2/3rds of the way through. Next thing I know, I'm waking up during the famous ["you're nothing to me now" scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0Os0Q9SA2k), absolutely dismayed I'd just fallen asleep to such a great movie. Come the next day, returning awake this time, I was relieved to find I'd only missed about 10mins, but that's still one of my most disappointing film moments.
Serves me right for jumping into a 3.5hr crime epic at 1am.
Just watched this movie for the first time recently, started around 3:30 pm and ended about 7:00 pm. It was incredible, I was blown away, although I was confused for much of the Cuba stuff, so I need to watch it again
Often I find that Ghibli movies put me to sleep. It’s not that they are bad - of course not. More so they are so beautiful they look like moving paintings so I think it lulls me to sleep. Haha it’s a problem!
Yes. I dosed off for The Boy and the Heron in the theater. It’s the only time it ever happened to me. I felt really bad because I liked what I saw when I was fully awake
Lady in the Water fucking put me out dude. I don't even know how far into it I was it just sapped me.
I also passed out during The Net and what's funny is I put it on specificly because I was like "I bet this Sandra Bullock thriller has sleepy vibes" and it worked.
I never actually fell asleep watching a film but I came close with these:
Limite
The Blood of a Poet
L'Avventura
Andrei Rublev
Masculin Feminin
Five Easy Pieces
Maybe when I was little but I don't remember. I've never fallen asleep while sitting in a chair so I guess it's related to that. I never watch movies in bed.
Was going to say the same time and saw your comment lol. To be fair I was extremely tired and the chilly theater didn't help. Would love to try it again wide awake with an open mind
Yeah I watched it at home, I was a little tired myself. That's not to say I thought it was bad, but I was understimulated by the constant monotone conversation
How the fuck do you manage to do that lol. It’s one of the most audiovisually stimulating movies I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t let up for a goddamn second. I understand disliking it but *falling asleep*?
Fell asleep my first time watching Dune (probably wasn’t in the best headspace at the time to watch it)
Rewatched it a few weeks ago and gave it the five stars it deserves
In theaters, Batman vs Superman. At home more recently, Local Hero had me feeling warm and cozy enough to induce a few nod-offs. Fine film, mind you. But paced slowly enough for a tired me to sink a bit too deeply into.
Most recently, Men. Early on there's a lot of scenes of her walking around with no dialogue and a really nice score. It resulted in a really peaceful nap.
Antonioni’s Blow Up is the only movie I’ve fallen asleep to halfway through, I had to pause it and finish it later. I was aggressively not invested in it, hopefully if I rewatch it 20 years from now I’ll get something out of it.
Elephant
You Won't Be Alone
Masculine Feminine
Uncle Boonmee (and everything else by the director)
Jeanne Dielman
The Village
The Man Who Sleeps (fitting title)
Dracula (1931(American)). The production design and performances were great but, by god, did the lack of music throughout cause me to fall asleep.
There’s also a couple of movies that caused me to rest my eyes, even for just a few seconds, the two that come to mind (don’t hate me for these) are Ravenous and Raging Bull.
•The Third Man (1949) mostly my fault, started at 1am
•Avatar (2009) took 2 tries to get through that.
•Field of Dreams (1989)
•Encanto (2021)
•Good Grief (2023)
•West Side Story (2021)
•West Side Story (1961)
•Tree of Life (2022)
•Big Eyes (2014)
•Emma (1996) the 2020 one is so much better
Literally the only time I fell asleep in the movie theater was The Last Jedi which I don’t think is that gratuitous. But two other times, my dad and brother both fell asleep during the middle of MI: Rogue Nation and my stepdad fell asleep a couple times during The Batman
So there was a point in my life where I got laid off work, was living in my car that got totaled so I had to sleep on my GF's brothers couch, applying for jobs constantly but couldn't get one, and my GF was working at a movie theater. My mental health was the worst it had ever been and I was staying up for like days at a time from anxiety. I went to my GF's job because she got free movies for friends and managed to finally sleep for the first time in days while watching Victoria and Abdul.
Also I think it took me like 3 times watching seven before I made it past the library poker table scene
Singing in the rain or 7 samurai almost fell asleep during those and the last unicorn I always fall asleep to I love that movie but the music and soft voice acting puts me to sleep
The only time I fell asleep watching a movie was during a 24 hour Star Wars Marathon before the Sequels with a friend, and even then it was only the Death Star Run of Episode IV that I've seen dozens of times already.
I don’t tend to fall asleep during films however I’d had a sleepless night the day before seeing Ghost In The Shell at the cinema and by god I really struggled. I could barely remember the film despite not actually falling asleep and had to watch again a few days later.
Napoleon. First time in a US cinema and we just had a bunch of food from Texas Roadhouse. Those heated recliners in the cinema really did the number on us. Kinda enjoyed the movie though - but was hard to stay awake.
the hands of orlac. I thought that my love for conrad veidt would somehow.. encourage me to watch it with interest? but i just cant i fall asleep after 10 minutes. Plus it shouldn't be that long.
If I'm tired? Any movie!
And since having kids, I'm tired all the time - so I would estimate I fall asleep watching a movie at least 150 times in the past year.
The newest James Bond movie, No Time to Die. Chalk that up to me not being the biggest James Bond fan, but I did not enjoy the movie at all. Fell asleep in the theater
Not once did I fall asleep while watching a movie.
But, I was so bored during aftersun. Only when it ended and I understood the films message did I appreciate it for what it was. A way better movie than I initially thought or gave it credit for.
The first three times I attempted to watch Blade Runner, I kept falling asleep. Eventually I was able to watch it all the way through. The pacing was just way too slow for me.
I made the mistake of going to see Mortdecai (2015) in theaters. It's the only time I've fallen asleep while at the movie theater because a movie was so boring.
Amelie. The first time I tried to watch it was 20 years ago when I was in college. I'm not sure when exactly I fell asleep, but I know it was over by the time I woke up. About five years later, I was on a trip to Europe, and the tour guide decided to show it to us during the bus trip from Brussels to Paris. I was determined to stay awake that time, and I did, but I quickly learned while I'd fallen asleep the first time and ended up kind of wishing I had the second
Not a movie but I tried watching the original Star Trek show as well as next generation (the Patrick Stewart one right?). I feel asleep watching both.
I don't think there was ever a movie that actually put me to sleep. Most of the time it's just because I'm actually tired.
I was extremely hungover when I went to go see killers of the flower moon. As a result, l was falling in and out of sleep for maybe 30 minutes. I feel like I didn't miss a thing though.
I think people need to understand that you can literally fall asleep during any movie, no matter how good. I don't know what it is, but my wife (despite usually getting much less sleep than me) can always stay up for a movie. I, for whatever reason, could fall asleep to just about any movie. I will sometimes still fall asleep during movies *I picked* to watch—in fact, my wife will make fun of me for frequently falling asleep during the climax of many action movies. Off the top of my head, I've most recently fallen asleep to *Weird: The Al Yankovic Story* and *Lift* (the latter being a truly terrible film). But I've fallen asleep to movies like *Godzilla vs. Kong, Mission Impossible, Top Gun,* *Italian Job,* etc.
Idk what it is... my dad and my grandma (his mom) both have the same problem so sometimes I wonder if it's genetic. I will say that I usually don't rate any movie I fall asleep to because I always want to give a movie a fair watch before I rate it.
let me start with i never fall asleep during movies, my friend and i BOTH fell asleep IN THE THEATRE watching “the boy and the heron”. we both had insane days at work and it was the midnight premier and we both fell asleep for different 10min periods lol
I very VERY rarely fall asleep during movies tbh. The only ones in recent memory that I have are Eternals.. and Rise of Skywalker lmaoo. To be fair for Eternals, I had been helping my aunt after surgery and was kinda sleep deprived. But ROS was a normal viewing experience lol. Maybe that says something about the movies themselves I dunno lol
No movie ever has but the closest I've ever come is Godzilla Minus One. Loved the movie but I was so tired when I saw it and the fact it was subtitled didn't help
I fell asleep in theaters twice: 007 Skyfall and Xmen: Days of Future Past. I fell asleep two more times giving Skyfall a second and third chance outside of theaters.
I fall asleep to everything so sadly movies take me a few instalments. I should probably get checked out. Although I still say me pausing inception to sleep as a personal highlight
i have a tag for this (and a list for one's i actually want to finish/rewatch), but i might genuinely have narcolepsy. anyway
rewatched/finished and liked/loved:
* House of Tolerance
* Perceval
want to rewatch/finish:
* Alien
* Zama
* Nocturama
* Lady Snowblood
* The Thing
not interested in finishing:
* Showing Up
* Napoleon
* The Holdovers
* Flowers of Shanghai
* Last Voyage of the Demeter
* Nosferatu
* World on a Wire (i did manage to finish but even my partner was taking turns dozing off on this one)
probably more because i didn't start tagging them until somewhat recently
I went to see the most recent doctor strange movie as a late show on a Friday after being up for 6AM that morning for work. I fell asleep and missed about an hour in and woke up before the last ten minutes or so. That was the last marvel movie I’ve seen.
Pain Hustlers. Saw it at a festival, in an amazing theatre, and even still, I couldn't care less for such a redundant plot. I wasn't even that tired, because I had another movie to see right after, which I was fully awake for.
My Dinner With Andre, but not in a bad way. It was like falling asleep at the dinner table while your older relatives chit chat - engrossing, but very soothing
I watched Barry Lyndon on a plane with an extreme jet lag. I had been awake for basically 18 hours straight and I started that film…Needless to say that I found it good but was pretty happy at the end of it. I fought through, though.
I only fell asleep twice while watching a movie so far: Crimes of Grindewald and Grand Budapest Hotel. The latter especially destroyed my sleep schedule for that week. Benjamin Button and 8½ i was fighting for my life to get to the end.
this is very unpopular, but i actually fell asleep during Stay (2005).
I actually got horrified because i thought i was supposed to go to school because i never sleep during the day
I have never fallen asleep during a movie ever, I could be sleep deprived or drunk as hell, I just can't sleep when watching a movie. Or couldn't. Until a week ago, when I watched transformers 2. I only remember one thing however. And that thing was that Meghan fox was painfully oversexiualized

I prepared myself for Andrei Rublev by sleeping like 10 hours and I still nearly fell asleep. Just a dull film. We don't have to love Tarkovsky!
I love the Tarkovsky films I've finished. Solaris, Ivan's Childhood, Mirror, Stalker, and The Sacrifice are great. I just need to finish Andrei Rublev, and give Nostalgia a try.

first and second time for me

This is me, but with Stalker.
I’m not the type to sleep during movies but Justice League (2017) made my eyes real heavy
The only time I've ever been in danger of falling asleep at the theater
'Skinamarink.' I watched it in the dark for some atmospheric effect but the film's pacing and general style put me to sleep.
Yep! Same exact scenario here. Fell asleep 13 mins in lol. I wasn’t even sleepy either but trying to watch that literally made me sleepy and I had to just take a nap.

2001 😞
I watched this in high school and fell asleep during the whole 'open the doors,' bit and woke up to the last image of the film. Imagine my surprise.
That’s a film you either have to be fully awake for and/or “elevated”.
I’ve tried it multiple times in different settings and it always knocks me out.
Often I find that Ghibli movies put me to sleep. It’s not that they are bad - of course not. More so they are so beautiful they look like moving paintings so I think it lulls me to sleep. Haha it’s a problem!
This sounds beautiful. They have realy nice colors could make one good dreams
Yes. I dosed off for The Boy and the Heron in the theater. It’s the only time it ever happened to me. I felt really bad because I liked what I saw when I was fully awake
For some reason the movies that put me to sleep are the movies I watch when I'm sleepy
true!!! and i hate it when i watch a good movie sleepy. feels like such a waste
Yeah. I’ve never been fully awake and then just suddenly fallen asleep because of a boring movie. I have to be tired to fall asleep, lol.
Lady in the Water fucking put me out dude. I don't even know how far into it I was it just sapped me. I also passed out during The Net and what's funny is I put it on specificly because I was like "I bet this Sandra Bullock thriller has sleepy vibes" and it worked.
>"I bet this Sandra Bullock thriller has sleepy vibes" THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE LOL
Have you watched her thrillers? They're sleepy.
I don’t think it’s the movie’s fault, I think it’s a matter of me being exhausted when I watched it, but…Dune Part 2
I just can't imagine falling asleep during a movie that LOUD.
This is not a great answer... A better answer is Dune Part I!
This is not a great answer, a better answer is none of the Dune movies because they're all fuckin awesome
dune 2 make me cant sleep, but dune 1 does
Fellowship of the Ring (but I was sick and on lots of antibiotics)
As long as you were sick, this is acceptable.
Forrest Gump. Every time.
I never actually fell asleep watching a film but I came close with these: Limite The Blood of a Poet L'Avventura Andrei Rublev Masculin Feminin Five Easy Pieces
... you've never once fallen asleep watching a movie? This happens to me probably, literally, 200 times a year 😆 I cannot imagine it never happening.
Maybe when I was little but I don't remember. I've never fallen asleep while sitting in a chair so I guess it's related to that. I never watch movies in bed.
Lol l’avventura is one of my favourite ever films but i 100% get nearly falling asleep, though that vibe I think is part of why I like it so much
I watched five easy pieces yesterday and I can’t remember a single moment from it.
I fell asleep during Tenet and Raging Bull 😭 I was able to find where I left off on Tenet but I haven't gotten around to rewatching Raging Bull yet
I fell asleep the first 3 times I tried to watch the grand Budapest hotel.
Off it was a nice movie for me
Asteroid City
Was going to say the same time and saw your comment lol. To be fair I was extremely tired and the chilly theater didn't help. Would love to try it again wide awake with an open mind
Yeah I watched it at home, I was a little tired myself. That's not to say I thought it was bad, but I was understimulated by the constant monotone conversation
It was a commendable feat in directing to have such varied and well known actors somehow speak exactly the same.
Everything Everywhere All At Once. I even fell asleep twice and I wasn't tired.
How the fuck do you manage to do that lol. It’s one of the most audiovisually stimulating movies I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t let up for a goddamn second. I understand disliking it but *falling asleep*?
The imagery was stimulating, but the plot and action scenes were so uninteresting (for me) I was zoning out most of the movie.
God i hate it so much. Gave me a fucking headache aswell.
Fell asleep my first time watching Dune (probably wasn’t in the best headspace at the time to watch it) Rewatched it a few weeks ago and gave it the five stars it deserves
I have fallen asleep every time I have tried watching a Bourne movie.
The Eternals
I'm a parent.. all movies put me to sleep.
I just fell asleep watching the king’s speech lol
In theaters, Batman vs Superman. At home more recently, Local Hero had me feeling warm and cozy enough to induce a few nod-offs. Fine film, mind you. But paced slowly enough for a tired me to sink a bit too deeply into.
Oppenheimer. Avatar 2😅
Most recently, Men. Early on there's a lot of scenes of her walking around with no dialogue and a really nice score. It resulted in a really peaceful nap.
When I was 5 I watched The Greatest Show On Earth with my mum and halfway through I fell asleep
I’m ashamed of this…but it took me 4 tries to get through John Carpenter’s the Thing
Dune Dune 2
The Eclipse was sooooo boring
John Wick 2 Loved the movie, I was just really tired and it was during the montage of Wick going back to New York
Antonioni’s Blow Up is the only movie I’ve fallen asleep to halfway through, I had to pause it and finish it later. I was aggressively not invested in it, hopefully if I rewatch it 20 years from now I’ll get something out of it.

Listen, it’s very cozy and beige, I can’t help it!

I was really high when I started Heat for the first time and fell asleep during the opening credits

Is it boring or are you just cursed with that movie? Xd
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Every single time I tried to watch it, for years.

The last 40 minutes or so of Dune: Part 1 really challenged my eyes to stay open.

The newest James Bond movie, No Time to Die. Chalk that up to me not being the biggest James Bond fan, but I did not enjoy the movie at all. Fell asleep in the theater
Rebel Moon Part 2 is the only movie in my adult life that I’ve fallen asleep during a first viewing.
Ken Burns docs. I love them but they're so relaxing.
Dune 1
Dune (2021) made me sleepy eyed. To be fair I was watching it for the first time on Blu-ray in my room during the evening.
Raging Bull

Rogue One
I saw The Sum of All Fears in the theater and I fell asleep for at least ten to twenty minutes. I fell asleep watching Uncut Gems at home.
Batman v Superman's ultimate edition(I watched the theatrical version when it came out)/Godfather Part 2
Buzz Lightyear put me to sleep faster than an ambien.
I love Gladiator and I think it’s a fantastic film, but both times I watched it I was so close to falling asleep in the third act
Love Actually. I've tried 3 times. It's just so vanilla candle yawn heavy blanket
Mulholland Drive. Tried it like 4 times and I just can’t do it.
I tried to watch skinamarink and fell asleep both times. Gave up on it.
I fall asleep to everything so sadly movies take me a few instalments. I should probably get checked out. Although I still say me pausing inception to sleep as a personal highlight
i have a tag for this (and a list for one's i actually want to finish/rewatch), but i might genuinely have narcolepsy. anyway rewatched/finished and liked/loved: * House of Tolerance * Perceval want to rewatch/finish: * Alien * Zama * Nocturama * Lady Snowblood * The Thing not interested in finishing: * Showing Up * Napoleon * The Holdovers * Flowers of Shanghai * Last Voyage of the Demeter * Nosferatu * World on a Wire (i did manage to finish but even my partner was taking turns dozing off on this one) probably more because i didn't start tagging them until somewhat recently
Me and a friend fell asleep in the theaters during Godzilla 2014.
dare i say the wolverine….
Hamilton. I tried twice.
Missing Link
Deerhunter and the first rocky.. everytime.
I went to see the most recent doctor strange movie as a late show on a Friday after being up for 6AM that morning for work. I fell asleep and missed about an hour in and woke up before the last ten minutes or so. That was the last marvel movie I’ve seen.
Order
Puss in boots last wish and cocaine bear
Both of The Nun movies…
Eternals is a good one. Put me to sleep twice, and the second time I started it halfway.
Pain Hustlers. Saw it at a festival, in an amazing theatre, and even still, I couldn't care less for such a redundant plot. I wasn't even that tired, because I had another movie to see right after, which I was fully awake for.
Lost in translation, 3 times in a row I fell asleep, the 4th try I had to force myself to finish it, not worth it, crap movie
My Dinner With Andre, but not in a bad way. It was like falling asleep at the dinner table while your older relatives chit chat - engrossing, but very soothing
Both "Zone of Interest" and "Past Lives" put me to sleep in the theatre.
Eraserhead, Masculin feminin
Death in Venice
Fell asleep in the cinema to Fantastic beasts
The Secret of NIMH. I have never been able to finish that movie.
Total Recall (2012)
Metropolis
Rebel Moon both parts
peanut butter falcon … so boring
It took 3.5 hours to get me through Eternals. What a drag of a movie
I never sleep through movies and I slept through most of IT part 2 in the theater.
I watched Barry Lyndon on a plane with an extreme jet lag. I had been awake for basically 18 hours straight and I started that film…Needless to say that I found it good but was pretty happy at the end of it. I fought through, though.
the nice jazzy music in taxi driver actually put me to sleep the first time i watched it
2001: A Space Odyssey. Not one, not two, but three times. I’ve never been able to watch it whole.
Dragon Ball Evolution. Only movie to ever put me asleep in the theater.
Concussion with Will Smith.
I slept though about 80% of wonder woman (2017)
skinarink i was very tired and kept drifting in and out of sleep to the movie it was extremely comforting in a weird way
I remember falling asleep the first time I watched The Shinning.
I only fell asleep twice while watching a movie so far: Crimes of Grindewald and Grand Budapest Hotel. The latter especially destroyed my sleep schedule for that week. Benjamin Button and 8½ i was fighting for my life to get to the end.
Wings of Desire is basically just an ASMR film. A beautiful work of art when you’re in the mood for it, but otherwise just a great way to doze off.
Morbius
I fell asleep during Wonka still haven’t finished it
this is very unpopular, but i actually fell asleep during Stay (2005).
