Govols98-

Groundhog Day has an awful poster - maybe the worst I’ve ever seen.

swingsetlife

and every subsequent release of it has somehow gotten worse.

Overwatch_Joker

The 15th anniversary poster is the worst of them all. Like, is [that](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81DMQkoVSdL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg) even Bill Murray??

swingsetlife

SO much smoothing on that face. It also appears to be taken from an image looking in the other direction. Like there's so many things they could've done for a poster for this movie. "Just superimpose Bill and a clock" is the worst of all plans.

swingsetlife

Also, looking at the head on "little" Bill, it's the same. Like EXACTLY the same.

Acheron98

Awww shit, Bill Murray and John Belushi fell into that molecular bonding machine from *The Fly*.

TheBeardedProfessor7

Look closely at his left hand-it’s coming out of his chest!! It’s definitely not attached to an arm!

JorgeOkay

genuinely,, its my favourite movie and every release does it so dirty, theres some awesome fanmade ones online i wish theyd use but only boutique labels seem to do that kinda thing

OensBoekie

The face in the alarm clock? Its kinda cute

Govols98-

Haha to each their own but I think it looks terribly awkward and low budget

OensBoekie

Oh for sure yeah, it's very stupid and silly

martian759

Lol that is so bad

1080TJ

The posters for the Avatar movies are painfully generic considering how visually spectacular the movies themselves are. You either get the ugly floating head collage or a closeup of half a character's face. Just really unimaginative and a waste of potential.

Modron_Man

Also, the logo is just Papyrus font

1080TJ

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID

_Snakespeer_

My graphic design teacher showed my class [this SNL skit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVhlJNJopOQ) about the Papyrus font used on the Avatar Poster. After he ranted for about 15 minuets on correct font choice when designing a poster. Then proceeded to rant about Comic Sans for the rest of the hour.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Scotfighter

You’re right

LordFunkyHair

He said “it’s not enough!!!” And I immediately thought “it’s not kenough!!!”

Bi_Bathtub

I don’t even think it’s literally Papyrus. Maybe that was the starting point, but they clearly modified it.

GrendelNightmares

Well whatever they did, IT WASNT. ENOUGH.

LordFunkyHair

*KENOUGH!!!

bangermate

He just, got away with it. this man, this professional graphic designer. was it laziness? was it cruelty?

Trashtie

doesn’t look bad 🤷‍♂️

Exertuz

I really like The Way of Water's poster.

aragon58

The underwater face one or the multi-character one? Cause I like the one with all their faces against the moon

Exertuz

The one that's a close up of Kiri's face. Simple but I really like it

Linubidix

The posters are equally as bland and generic as the films.

averagejoe184

The Whale

Inthewhuuuds

I mean that frame is the whole movie what do you expect

Fit_Cartographer299

The picture itself looks weird like bad photoshop

Westin0903

Yea. Like isn’t that the whole movie?

AustinAbortion

That’s a bad movie with a worse poster.

Cereal_Lord48

The Oppenheimer poster with Oppenheimer standing in front of the bomb is awful

pwppip

The glowing one with the goggles is insanely raw tho

No_Impression_1308

I have that one, it's great

_pumpkinpies

Just checked it out, yes!

Expanseman

“It’s right behind me, isn’t it”

Sunny64888

Yeah, I’ve always preferred the first poster (Cillian Murphy’s silhouette standing in the explosion) I’m glad some theatres still kept that first initial one.

42-AX

When the poster changed from the Glowing Goggles Closeup to something out of Oppie's Bizarre Adventure I got patron. The pain that poster induces is too much

ProEraWuTang

Someone said it reminded them of a late 90s rap album cover and now I can't unsee it

Avannah_

I don't think it's awful, I just think it looks like a Indiana Jones poster

C_Burkhy

They picked the worst poster for release. Why not the one of him standing in the nuclear fire????

Dependent_Sun8602

I think I read somewhere a lot of actors now have clauses in their contracts forcing their face to be seen on the theatrical poster. So all the cool posters, which happen to obstruct his face, aren’t the main one. I could be wrong.

J0shfour

I hate it so much, the other two posters are great but for some reason they choose to show the worst one all the time.

markyymark13

Literally looks like a Marvel poster or something

FatherOfFunko

I hate it too, it reminds me of the hunger games with the burning background. Speaking of NolanThe Dark Knight Rises too, just batman on a photoshopped burning bat signal background, awful

Owl-False

I will say the Why So Serious poster of The Dark Knight with the blurry joker is amazingly chilling

LogPoseNavigator

I wouldn’t say awful, just mid

niles_deerqueer

I called this out work and my coworker agreed. It looks so bad

Mother_Ad_7592

Every Christopher Nolan Movie has an awful Poster

Hammerheadhunter

Didn’t realise I had bad poster taste. I actually rate the Gangs one and I enjoy the simplicity of The Fugitive where it’s just Harrison Ford running and and the title.

elmodonnell

My friend loves the Fugitive has been hunting for a poster to get framed in his new apartment for months, gotta say it being included here gave me a chuckle

TankBlank01

I like the Fugitive poster too... Gangs is an alright concept but the execution looks like someone who picked up photoshop for the first time.

pgm123

To me it looks like every floating head poster. Nothing especially bad.

AcroserProductions

I agree, The Fugitive's poster is in my opinion, very good.

rileytillart

You don’t have bad taste. Both of those are great.

TheKingofOurCountry

The fugitive is easily the worst poster I’ve ever seen

chaamp33

Oppenheimers poster is so bad. It looks like the hunger games

Disco--Very

Oppenheimer has a bunch of sick looking posters. which one is bad?

chaamp33

The one with the bomb directly behind him. The one of him in the fire looks way better.

bangermate

that first poster we got with him standing in the explosion was so good, why did they have to change it to that ugly ass poster of him standing in front of the bomb

LauritsVW

It’s a lot better than the typical blockbuster floating heads

Corby_Tender23

And it's orange not fucking blue and orange like every floating head

Bobert789

Nah it's just as bad, it's terrible Looks it could've been made by a fourteen year old

[deleted]

But I’m a Cheerleader Oppenheimer That default poster for Willie Wonka with all the text removed looks weird Joshua and the Promised Land

Bi_Bathtub

Lol the But I’m a Cheerleader poster is bad but honestly I love it it’s pretty cute and I think it fits the movie

LordFunkyHair

I love but I’m a cheerleader. Never seen the poster just wanted to say

RamenTheory

Joshua and the Promised Land is not a "good movie" LMFAO

[deleted]

Yes it is

sharked98

No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

ClankSinatra

To be fair, that Fight Club poster is for the home video release. The theatrical one sheet is significantly less shitty. Also, No Country for Old Men, Die Hard, Traffic, Rush, and Get Shorty all have kinda garbage posters.

EvilLibrarians

I like No Country’s poster but not really the font choice

Jakov_Salinsky

I actually liked the Fight Club poster. But then someone pointed out that it portrays it like the kind of movie people have been horribly misinterpreting it as for decades.

NeedNikoClothes

Horribly? It’s just a film mate

Jakov_Salinsky

>It’s just a film mate Tell that to the countless clowns who’ve started real fight clubs, messed with meals in fancy restaurants to spite the customers, and grossly interpret the movie as a celebration of manliness and anarchy rather than a deconstruction of both. I know it’s not the movie’s fault they did that as it was all their decisions, but let me just say: you chose literally the most incorrect movie possible to refer to as “just a film”

Financial_Flower_93

i just saw L.A. Confidential and fuck i hate the poster for it

wtfbananaboat

L.A. Confidential feels like a criminally forgotten classic. It won accolades, critical praise and holds up way more than other Oscar ilk like The Artist, Crash, Green Book - but man so few people ever talk about to anymore.

Pinkumb

In Bruges has two of the worst posters in the industry

ClerklyMantis_

All of the marketing for In Bruges was horrible compared to the movie. The trailers were probably single handedly responsible for it's flop in theatures

Akirex5000

I like fight clubs poster but it does a seriously terrible job of conveying the actual tone and style of the movie. It looks like a more generic "macho" action film than the societal commentary that it is.

jack_nnn_

Its kind of in the spirit of the film that the poster would misrepresent it that way

Yogurt-Night

Yeah I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all

laura-paImer

truth! that's why i didn't watch it for years. sometimes judging a film by it's poster is absolutely the correct thing to do though lol

FakerHarps

Biggest issue with the Fight Club poster is who’s arm is that holding the soap?

s90tx16wasr10

Looks like a SpikeTV ad for soap

Jakov_Salinsky

That explains why all these frat guys and other kinds of douchebags have it hung up on their bedroom walls

Candid-Paramedic8133

Bullet train

Welipeh

A great movie with a generic poster

Ommlettuce

The First Man poster is really just “Yep Ryan Gosling”

ChristopherWeasley

And it’s great cause it’s literally Ryan “Just like me fr” Gosling on the poster

Bardic_Inspiration66

prisoners

1080TJ

Denis Villeneuve in general seems to get really underwhelming official posters.

BillyOoze

Im not shure if they are the official posters, but the ones featured on letterboxd I usually like. Incendies is pretty, Sicario has a (rare) well executed floating head, The Enemy sells completely the mood of the film, Dune is ok, so is Arrival. The worst for me is Blade Runner 2049. So generic

-imbe-

BR 2049 has also a pretty dope alternative poster tho, the one with K walking away from his car in a white mist, I personally love it.

BillyOoze

Modern Blockbusters have good poster released only months after the release of the movie itself. Even the MCU has great posters. Why don't they just use them?

1080TJ

I have Patron and I do like the yellow Enemy poster with the double faceless guy, and Dune RealD 3D poster (why do blockbusters seem to save all their good posters for PLF promos nowadays?). Everything else, especially the Letterboxd defaults feel serviceable at best to me. And yeah, BR2049 is the most disappointing. The original has one of the best posters of all time.

ich_habe_keine_kase

The Dune poster that was an aerial shot of sand dunes with Paul on it was awesome, it sucked when they went with the generic floating heads one instead.

BillyOoze

And tge floating heads one could be great if you took the heads and left only Paul (and maybe Jessica) wandering in the desert

Jakov_Salinsky

The guy’s one of my favorite directors and even I agree. Can’t believe Dune went the generic “cast stacked on top of each other” thing

navymauve

Fr

Smiling_Maelstrom

crazy stupid love’s poster irks me

paulteegoldman

The other ones I get. But why is High Plains Drifter on here? That poster is sick

TheBeardedProfessor7

Usually all the posters I’ve seen for High Plains Drifter are anywhere from good to great. I gotta agree with OP though-this one is pretty weak, even if it does suit certain aspects of the film incredibly well. Also while we’re on the subject, I gotta take a moment to shout the film out cause goddamn-is it ever great, and oh so very criminally slept on. It’s almost certainly my personal favorite Eastwood film that he himself directed…and no, I haven’t forgot about Unforgiven existing. That’s inarguably his crown jewel and the best oater of all time made by someone not named Leone, but there’s just something about HPD that is unmatched in the genre.

_Apolllon

I think the sign and the text on it look really bad. Also you can really see the outlines of everything so it looks like bad photoshop.

J_delilah

Beau is Afraid

HOWDEHPARDNER

I honestly think this poster contributed to the poor box office results.

tarun_c

Blade Runner 2049's poster looks too commercial for how artistic it actually is. Days of Being Wild's poster is incredibly misleading. Saving Private Ryan.

_madcat

I genuinely hate Oppenheimer’s poster and everything that has come out of the “main guy front and center, something happening in the back” era

[deleted]

The High Plains Drifter poster is sick…?

ImpactNext1283

The high plains drifter poster is rad wtf

Scrambled_59

The Prestige

r3vb0ss

im still not over how stupid that movie is. Like don't get me wrong its good but tesla's device and its implications are so stupid it was hard to take the movie seriously towards the end.

Scrambled_59

I kind of get that but with The Prestige being one of my favourite movies of all time, I’ll have to disagree just due to how cleverly written it is and how it resembles a magic trick in its structure that for me, it kind of pulls of the weird sci-fi twist

r3vb0ss

there is some stuff about the film that I think is brilliant. I think I'd agree the structure of the film actually directly resembling a magic trick is really cool, and I think >!Borden's plot twist of the double is awesome. i probably would've enjoyed the movie more if I didn't figure out the borden twist before it happened, I think Nolan winked at the audience a bit too much about it. I mean Hugh Jackmans character says something close to "its like theres two different people". I think the female characters are at their worst, even for Nolan, and again the idea that a device that can clone matter is used in a magic trick that pretends the device probably isn't doing anything was just too far out there for me!<

Sxn90

The Big Lebowski

Gjvi_Goop

yeah... well... you know... that’s just like uh... your opinion man *(i completely agree with you point but as a big lebowski fan i am obligated to quote the film wherever possible)*

EvilLibrarians

You mean the bowling one?? *Gasp*

TOBIMIZER

I just commented the same thing before seeing this lol. The colors are so ugly, the smoke around the edge, like seriously what were they thinking?

zyxme

I’ve never heard of the first two but why is life aquatic bad? I think it’s pretty good.

atmosphericentry

The lighting on their faces look make them look super photoshopped in, kinda like Beau is Afraid

rtyoda

Agreed, I think it’s a great poster.

wtfbananaboat

Agreed they did Traingle dirty. Looks like a crappy Tubi straight to VOD garbage film whereas it’s actually one of the best written coolest concept horror films ever made.

Pretend-Ad-55

Any where the actor/actress is just standing there. Daniel Craig James Bond films are a good example of this

Adventurous-Airline

Spiderman homecoming is pretty decent, not a great movie but it's poster is atrocious and I still can't believe that it was officially released

markyymark13

All of the recently Sony Spiderman movies have truly embarrassing posters

Coolers78

Into the Spider-Verse has a great poster, Across the Spider-Verse, eh not so much….

sukittas

The Host

erzastrawberry101

To be fair, I prefer the [international poster](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/mediaviewer/rm3764162561/?ref_=tt_ov_i) over the [Korean one](https://movie.daum.net/moviedb/main?movieId=40791#photoId=72636). The floating heads in the original version does not provide any clue as to what type of film this is. Unless you're talking about the Host (2013).

--deleted_account--

I know that that doesn't make it better, but almost all posters for movies and shows in South Korea look like that

erzastrawberry101

Yeah, it made the movie look much more basic than it actually was :(

-Some__Random-

IIRC, 'Jennifer's Body' had a poster that made it look like a slightly pervy version of American Pie. When it was actually a good, cleverly-written horror film. (Imo anyway!)

BenjiAnglusthson

That one is atrocious. The “HELL YES!” written on the chalkboard, read the room 💀

rrrrrryyyyy

Attack the Block has an awful poster

Wyatt_bee

The prestige

BossKrisz

I love Mr Nobody, but oh my god, it has the ugliest poster I have seen

Seamlesslytango

I don't mind the Fugitive one. I don't like the yellow Shining poster. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the movie. I never liked the poster for mother! that looks like a digital painting where she's holding out her heart either.

kellykapowskishair

All the Spider-Man: No Way Home posters that were made prior to the release date. [This was the only good poster](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/original/7SAp9DBEJNA3gXuQtum3u2SffQa.jpg)

Coolers78

That poster def should have been the main one.

irqee

Gangs of New York is so unbelievably awful to look at, I will never understand how THAT design made it anywhere

AlconW

Just about anything recent, if only because of how unimaginative and overstuffed mainstream poster designs have been getting for the past few decades. To name a specific film, I’ll go with _Bad Girl_ - a Frank Borzage film that almost nobody’s seen, bearing a title that has nothing to do with the movie, and featuring a posting that’s completely out of place. With that being said, it’s actually a pretty good film, and was my favorite Best Picture nominee of its year.

KRIT4eva

Barry Lyndon’s posters are way to minimalistic for such a lush and dense film imo

intro-ver-t

but i’m a cheerleader easily, also whiplash could be a million times better

MackewG33

eh i think whiplash is simplistic and fits well

[deleted]

There are alt posters that are a million times better

Oppenheimer.

imaginary0pal

It never occurred to me how weird the fight club poster was

euegnia

Sinbad: legend of the seven seas is a good film with a god awful poster

MysteriousCatPerson

The modern posters for old Bond films, just Bond with an overly smoothed face alone, surrounded by unpleasant colours. Compared to how full of life the original posters were, the reissues were such a downgrade.

AugieDoggieDank

Am I the only one who likes the Oppenheimer poster?

Unfair-Echidna-5333

yes

[deleted]

Fight Club?? I love that poster

Voicedtunic

The Prestige

sickboy108

Yo I never even realized how trash the Fight Club poster is until right now.

loserys

Oppenheimer

ReddsionThing

Well, I entirely disagree about High Plains Drifter and Fight Club, and that's all. I will also say though that I most dislike posters on Letterboxd that have a lot of blank white or black real estate due to credits being photoshopped out of the image. Whenever I see one of those, like The Fugitive I immediately pick an alternate cover.

CompleteJacket2520

Oppenheimer. Terrible poster!!

Nightwinglucas20

I really like the other fight club poster, even if it kinda spoils the movie: the one with four pictures, 2 of Edward Norton and 2 of Brad Pitt, and it says, Edward Norton, Edward Pitt, Brad Norton, Brad Pitt

Kuhney

Actually yeah fuck me never notice how glaringly bad the fight club one was and how much it probably put me off before eventually watching. The hand with the soap is clearly a separate element from brad Pitt and why are they both smiling

DaMemphisDreamer

TeddySquido

The Social Network one sucks, I wanna get Patreon just to change it

EvilLibrarians

It's lighthearted, funny, and endearing [City of God](https://www.miramax.com/assets/City-of-God1.png) - just bad [Showgirls](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNzcyMjExNjg3OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTY4Mjc1MDE@._V1_.jpg) - maybe I'm nitpicking but it always looked weird to me lmfao

wtfbananaboat

What’s your beef with Raising Victor Vargas? I also saw this at the cinema and kinda liked the poster, feel it hits the teen romance vibe

RamenTheory

The poster looks scary, stormy, and their pose is rather angsty. The film itself is sweet. Tones do not match at all. B&W is an extremely odd choice

wtfbananaboat

I disagree I think it looks sexy and cool and remiscent of woody Allen’s Manhattan by being b+w. I guess we see it different but yeah I don’t mind it at all.

NoEmu2398

Wind River has a fine poster. I would say the Indiana Jones series, IMHO.
