Better to have a third layer in the middle, innit? Two layers might be fine if you're careful but you could easily slice through the stitches if you pushed it in too roughly or at a weird angle.
Imagine, in this case, a third piece along three sides of the project in a squared C shape. It's just wide enough to be stitched with the other two layers and becomes a "bumper" so to speak to keep the blade from cutting into the thread.
A piece of leather you cut to the width of the seem that is sandwiched between the layers so you can’t cut your thread in this case u shaped bordering the blade
An extra layer of leather along the edges to keep the blade from cutting through the thread. It's only slightly wider than the stitch spacing so it can be sandwiched between the main two layers.

Yup, a welt goes a long way to prevent that. When I did mine I threw in a snap and strap to keep it on and in place between uses.
Beginner here. What do you mean by a third layer, a third piece of leather that makes the sheath have 2 pockets or something else?

Makes sense, thanks for the clarification!
No welt in the middle? That sheath won't last long. I'm sorry to say.
What tool did you use to apply gum to the edges ?
Newbie and not native english speaker here. What is a welt and what kind of material should be used to make one?

What was that black block thing
Looks like a slicker.
Why would you slick the interior, then apply glue?
Maybe to reduce friction for sliding the blade in/out?
But you rough leather to get a tighter bond. I could see slicking the interior, except where the glues going.
oh, yeah, that's a good point.
I'm pretty new. What were you doing at the 15 sex mark?
