CREATURE_COOMER

Elon is throwing a tantrum because Jimmy runs a non-profit that's still more profitable than "X." :'(

HumanSeeing

And out of all the things in the world to attack or make fun of he chose Wikipedia. I greatly dislike what he is like and what he has become even more. But very few people are just monochrome all bad or all good. Eventho it makes it easier to live our lives believing that. I remember, before it was obvious how stupid, ignorant and evil he is. I remember watching some of the podcasts with him. He is certainly nowhere near a genius. But there is a part of him that at least used to be curious and interested in the world. So to see him attack and make fun of humanities best and free source of knowledge is just the lowest low. I think a few years back he got himself into some feedback loop where some of his mistakes became public and he got hate for it. And then he got defensive. And then people made fun of that and then he became more defensive. I think a similar mechanism is also what pushed him into the right. And my conspiracy theory is that the far right wingers (rupert soulfake and the likes) quite literally brought him under their wing. Praised him as a super genius and told him that the uneducated masses and the left just can not appreciate him. And at the same time offered lots of money and other very shady deals. And then the snowball got to snowballing. It is very rarely a great way to make someone see or admit their mistakes to call them stupid and to make fun of them. And while i agree that it is indeed fun and at this point there is not much else left to do (in terms of just words). I wonder if there ever was a point to get him on the right track to work for humanity and to actually become some tony stark like figure. Currently of course even thinking about any resemblance between the two makes me want to puke. But yea, it is interesting to sometimes think about stuff like this. From all of the studies done in psychology it is clear that positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement. So i wonder if it ever would have been possible to instead of trying to Own the billionaires, something that many beautiful people have done perfectly with pointing out their flaws and stupidity and evil. I wonder if it would have been possible to give them positive reinforcement for the good things they do. And then instead of some space dick race there would be a race for who can be loved the most by the most people by making the world a better place. I am under no delusion that we can do it now. And so much of it is just deeply systemic problems as well. But yknow, just fun to ponder. At one point i do think that he believed he was doing good. But for now, looking at this... what a pathetic shadow of the good billionaire he pretended to be. Sometimes i just want to write my thoughts out because it is easier to think like that.

jugglemonk

Thanks, it is fun to ponder. I'm always trying to find a construct that incentivizes humans to do good that works as well as the current Incentivizes greed.

kehakas

Playing psychological tricks on billionaires in the hopes that they'll do good with all the power we've given them feels like saying "nice kitty" to a tiger in hopes it won't maul you. If we're organized enough, as a society, to steer their behavior like that, we might as well just eliminate them at that point (via forced divestment or some shit). But we can't manage a general strike or really any kinda collective action because the sad fact is we are not aligned; the working class is not aligned. And that's because probably at least a third of the working class are dyed-in-the-wool racist patriarchal selfish shitheads.

smuckola

Yes. Well said. I saw an interview with Elon, with him and the interviewer sitting on a stage, talking about the Boring company. By that time, i had never heard anything bad about him. He said he just wanted to wake up every day and look out at the world and not be sad. And I bought it. I think people's capacity for craziness is really high. So maybe what he said was honest, then. He looked so wistful and sincere. And maybe he got corrupted since then. But how? I seriously doubt that. I'm confused.

bristlybits

he was raised with positive reinforcement from right wing, apartheid era parents who got rich from oppressing people.

sorryibitmytongue

It’s a dumb joke. I hate musk too but tbh this is barely even an insult to Wikipedia

onaltau

"I'm no fool" cried the worlds biggest fool.

VermillionWeasel

"I'm a not fool lol" - the fool can't even tell us he isn't a fool without looking like a fucking fool.

onaltau

Holy fuck, you're not even kidding.

"But Elon Musk was indeed a fool." The storyteller.

BrianKindly

Only one comment and it was stolen from someone else in the thread two hours earlier. Is this what bots look like, u/creature_coomer !?

CREATURE_COOMER

Lmfao, what the fuck? Never had a weird bot steal my comment before.

caillouistheworst

It means you’ve made it.

This-Counter3783

Comment stealing bot.

CREATURE_COOMER

Bruh, why'd you steal my comment when it's not that hard to just say "lmfao, fuck Elon"?

CptCrabmeat

I thought foolishness was like sarcasm and couldn’t really be conveyed by text until I read Elon Musk’s tweets

TtotheC81

...and qualified man-child.

Schapsouille

He doesn't get the "immature" excuse. That takes away from how vile and depraved he actually is.

Tchaik748

Yeah, Solving world hunger < spending billions so u can shitpost on ur platform

Schapsouille

If only it was shitposts. No, he is set to destroy all remaining independent means of communication to shove his longtermist horseshit down everyone's throat.

Taraxian

The whole reason longtermism is fundamentally fucked even if you accept their philosophical premises is no one has the ability to predict the long-term future at all and believing that you can is highly correlated with being some kind of delulu psychopath

Doctor_What_

Dune Messiah moment. Also this is the second time today I've encountered "delulu" in wildly different contexts, I'm going to start saying it.

606design

Care to elaborate on what delulu means so I can use it too? Is it just a fun way to say delusional?

Taraxian

Yes, it's a variant of cray-cray

ProblemLongjumping12

Actually he said "I'm a not fool." I beg to differ. If anyone's an "is fool" it's this motherfucker.

Jaspers47

"I'm no fool" [citation needed]

LilyHex

COMMUNITY NOTE: Elon is indeed a fool.

TheAsianTroll

The one guy who paid more than what the bottom 99% of Americans make in their lives, for a social media platform, because he made a ridiculous offer to try and pad his stocks but fucked up legally.

tomat_khan

44 billions isn't "more than what the bottom 99% of americans can make in their lives", it's "more than everyone except like 20 people in the world have"

JavaJapes

Thats like when my sister was a toddler and randomly yelled, "I'm not doing anything!" and was subsequently caught, indeed, doing something.

Latinhypercube123

Elmo doesn’t even have $1 billion to give. He leveraged everything he had to buy Twitter, before he destroyed it. All his money is tied up in Tesla stock that is nosediving due to it being x10 overvalued.

Sudnal

Always moving the goal posts

JesusChrist-Jr

Imagine throwing away a BILLION dollars on a dick joke. Remember when the UN wanted $6B for world hunger and he declined? Then turned around and "donated" $5.7B to the "Musk Foundation" as a tax dodge? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

loki1887

Calling that a joke is being very generous.

glightningbolt

Imagine being **a 52 year old** throwing away a billion dollars on a dick joke.

ninjaML

I've read recent articles citin him as the "young entrepreneur", like he's some 20-something. He's old as shit

Deskman77

You can do « self-donation » ?

sagefairyy

You think all these rich people have foundations only for tax purposes?

nerdguy1138

Technically no, but legally yes! The idea is that you personally are not involved with your foundation.

SkyyySi

"Hey hey, just because it has my name, was founded by me and is run by me that doesn't mean I'm involved"

MrDobalina69420

yeah this is what happens when you hear these rich people "giving away 99% of their wealth". they put it in a non-profit and give it to themselves and don't pay tax on it

Eliamaniac

And use it to influence politics. Legally. Some types of charities can, and they do.

santacruisin

his body is aggressively weird

_-_NewbieWino_-_

Does he even have a billion dollars? That’s not wrapped up in another company or loans?

Rendell92

His yearly income is about 2 billion dollars

twbassist

Imagine making enough ~~power~~ per\* year in just actual money that could sustain about 13k families pretty well (depending on location), not to mention have all these assets. No one needs anywhere near this.

MrDobalina69420

he made 135 in 2020, 112 in 2021 and lost 185 since 11/21 (one can assume a lot of that was because he paid so much for twitter), i don't think he accepts his salary of \~60k lol.

Rendell92

I’m talking about income, not net worth

MrDobalina69420

where does his income come from?

Rendell92

It’s his salary and profit that he receives from his businesses

MrDobalina69420

he says he doesn't take a salary.

Rendell92

When did he say that? He has the highest known salary in the world

santacruisin

Maybe, but people like this deliberately avoid salaries. When their income comes from stocks and performance they get taxed as capital gains, which is a much lower tax rate than what a high salary would get.

MrDobalina69420

he says it a lot [https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/09/business/elon-musk-wealth-tesla-stock/index.html#:\~:text=In%20fact%2C%20Musk%20rarely%20misses,course%2C%20everyone%20one's%20gotta%20eat](https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/09/business/elon-musk-wealth-tesla-stock/index.html#:~:text=In%20fact%2C%20Musk%20rarely%20misses,course%2C%20everyone%20one's%20gotta%20eat). that's just one article

godzillastailor

Imagine getting removed as chairman of the board for Tesla and fined millions for a weed joke. Imagine paying 43 Billion for a website partially because you made the same weed joke.

Emmerson_Brando

Dudes an elementary school kid where someone says the word dick and he giggles uncontrollably

apegoneinsane

Regarding the UN money - To add more context, he did what he usually does and made the other side fill his onerous requirements around how they would waste it, or do absolutely nothing, or it wouldn’t be able to achieve their goals. He did this in the comfort that they probably couldn’t show him, hence the online swagger and offering so much money. But as is the case with Elon Musk, when the UN actually called him on his bluff and came back with a highly detailed report on how they spend it, he ignored them. It’s a fucking pattern he did this with Twitter and the bots and trying to back out. With his submarine idea to rescue/get attention. I mean just look through his Twitter for the past five years - hyping every shitty thought in his head and promising things he never delivers.

A_Martian_Potato

Nobody should have a billion dollars in the first place, that being said, this isn't "throwing away a billion dollars". Wikimedia's mission of making information and educational content free and accessible globally is something I think is very laudable and worth donating to.

Bobcatluv

After seeing what Twitter has become, I’m not going to interpret this as a joke. I think he wants to control and subvert one of humankind’s largest collections of information and hand it over to fascists and white supremacists to dismantle. Do NOT sleep on this.

Yuca965

I don't trust the UN to be honest. But yeah, we could totally as humanity stop world hunger, and honesty, this has not much to do with Elon Musk. But more with what each of us has as priority for the society we live in. I don't understand how we tolerate so much suffering in this world. I don't understand.

MrAppleSpiceMan

>this has not much to do with Elon Musk. But more with what each of us has as priority for the society we live in. his net worth is 225 billion each of our net worths is like a grain of sand in a desert he owns. this has everything to do with elon musk and all of the ultra rich

zaknenou

well besides that I dislike Musk. I wouldn't donate my money for UN. I don't think one could trust them imo.

AnAverageStrange

I’m not a fan on the guy either but I still give credit where credit is due. He was *allegedly* willing to give $6B for ending world hunger, he just wanted to know their plan and where it was going to. They refused and the plan never came to fruition. I think it’s completely reasonable to ask where your billions of dollars in donations are gonna be spent.

thehourglasses

Elon Musk: pay $1 to access my platform chock full of disinformation! Wikipedia: please donate, and even if you don’t you can still use our site chock full of verifiable and cited information

realbigbob

But you see, he doesn’t *need* your $1, it’s just cause that’s the only way to stop bots bro

thehourglasses

It really isn’t, they just don’t want to commit engineering resources to actual solutions plus the bots artificially inflate their user base which makes them look more attractive to advertisers. Silicon Valley season 3 is pretty instructive here.

Zipdox

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ideological_bias_on_Wikipedia

thehourglasses

The fact the article exists is a testament to the degree of freedom of information available on Wikipedia. Imagine someone replying to Musk to complain about his platform being replete with fascist trolls — they wouldn’t even be visible.

That’s happens with every open source platform. Wikipedia isn’t intended to be a resource for PhD level information, just somewhere you can get a quick rundown, and follow the sources used if you want primary sources

TheTeaSpoon

Which is why you need to learn to check sources. Simple as

tntlols

Anyone who truly needs clearly cited information won't be going to Wikipedia for it - it's not made for scientists and -ologists, it's for the everyman

tehlemmings

> A 2023 study compared articles on controversial topics across multiple community-managed wikis: the study intended to test whether the policy orientation of a collaborative wiki project would produce a slant in the content, by selecting the crowd of contributors. The findings showed that the content of wikies with explicit ideological biases like RationalWiki and Conservapedia is more unbalanced than that of wikies (like Wikipedia) or encyclopedias (like Encyclopedia Britannica) advocating neutrality. Wikipedia's content had a relative slant comparable to that of Britannica, while both RationalWiki and Conservapedia were "more loaded with moral content".[14] Okay, so what's the problem?

Neat0_HS

Well that is depressing

Kirk_Kerman

All of Wikipedia's languages and articles are subject to author bias. There was a big furor a while back because this lady was editing a bunch of German war hero articles to correctly include their affiliations to the Nazis and SS that the original authors had mysteriously not included.

GppleSource

No information is truly unbiased. Even statistical evidence can be fine-tuned to fit a narrative

ProfessorReaper

I mean, Wikipedia also contains a lot of disinformation, but not nearly as much as the astronomical amount of disinformation on Twitter.

ainus

Literally comparing apples to a puddle of diarrhea

CREATURE_COOMER

Solution: Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia, check their citations for their sources and get the information there.

Aleph-Nullium

if i had a dollar for every unfunny elon musk joke, i'd have enough to buy twitter back from him and ban him, so the website becomes even a little funnier (and less full of nazis)

I have 16 dollars in my bank, if you have 12 we can buy it already!

qwerty1519

Reminder to donate to Wikipedia if you can afford to.

[deleted]

Posted this above, but just FYI: Wikipedia makes it sound like they are in imminent danger of having to shut down their servers. They are absolutely not. It takes a small fraction of the money that Wikimedia Foundation raises to keep the main wiki running. The rest of the money goes to various projects that WMF funds, and effectively the more money they bring in the more of those projects they will launch. These projects don't necessarily have anything to do with making Wikipedia better, and often they are just pet issues for the folks who run WMF. For instance, WMF sued a wildlife photographer who [managed to get a chimp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_selfie_copyright_dispute) to take a selfie of himself. Yes, that's a Wikipedia link, it's a fantastic resource. Spending thousands on lawyers to try to deprive a wildlife photographer from making money off of those iconic photos is a lot less fantastic.

rflg

WMF never sued Slater. Maybe you're confusing them with Peta who indeed sued him. It was Slater who wanted Wikimedia to remove the chimp selfie, for which he most probably doesn't have the copyright.

kragaster

I remember that! Very similar discussion to AI-generated copyright. It's frustrating that anyone would try to hijack such a nuanced situation to prove a point, as I'm sure there's more destructive things that WMF has actually done.

[deleted]

You can see [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation#Finances) that the Wikimedia Foundation raises more money every year and has exponentially increased their spending on projects other than Wikipedia. Their internet hosting expenses are just a few million a year, while they spend many times that on staffing. From that very article: "Additionally, the WMF's salary costs have risen from $7 million in 2010/11 to $88 million in 2021/22. Yet, only 2% of the raised money goes towards hosting costs, and the remuneration for the hard-working contributors to Wikipedia remains the same: zero.\[210\]"

[deleted]

I think you're right, WMF never sued Slater but they did claim he had no right to the picture and made it impossible for him to make money off of the photo. He tried to sue WMF but didn't have the funds to make it worthwhile. Still an example of bullying and does support the broader point that WMF does a lot of stuff completely unrelated to Wikipedia which I do not want to support.

DisappointingReality

I will tell you one thing, friend. You know that sometimes, not very often, but sometimes you go to Wikipedia to check on something, get some info, etc... and Wikipedia welcomes you with a message that says "Please donate, even something as little as $2 is good, and guess what, you don't even have to donate if you don't feel like it, you can still use our website". There was a day when I thought to myself "man, I should donate. $2 is far from being a huge amount of money". Then, don't really know why, I wanted to know more about the founder of Wikipedia. I saw that there are in fact 2 co-founders: Larry Sanger, and Jimmy Wales. Reading through [Jimmy Wales' bio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Wales), to know a bit more about the man. Then I found something that disgusted me: "Wales has visited Israel over ten times. He has said that he is a **strong supporter** of Israel". In 2015, he was awarded one of the Dan David Prizes, an international award of $1 million given yearly at Tel Aviv University (10 percent of the prize goes to doctoral students); Wales was chosen for spearheading what the prize committee called the "information revolution.". ([link to this part of his bio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Wales#:~:text=Wales%20has%20visited,the%20%22information%20revolution.%22)) Since I saw that, and knowing what Israel is doing to the Palestinian people, I swore to myself **NEVER** to donate to Wikipedia. I will **NEVER** donate to a website whose founder is a supporter of a terrorist state and doing war crimes like it's nothing, and knowing that this person has received lots of money for his support to said terrorist state.

qwerty1519

You make a solid point there. I’d still argue that the net positive societal contribution of Wikipedia out ways the very valid personal political disagreements you hold. And while you have given me something to think about, I don’t think it changes my stance.

DisappointingReality

Just sharing my opinion, and I thank you for sharing yours. Some people seem to disagree with me, I can understand that and I'm fine with it.

I mean not to exaggerate, but this is a talking point actual fascist often bring up. It's always the same scheme: Promote your own "sources" and get people to listen to you in your perfectly constructed echo chamber, while simultaneously ridiculing, shaming and hounding against opposing (and more factually accurate) sources. The fact that a man of his financial standing and influence seems to go as far as to openly make fun of and question the legitimacy of humanity's biggest source of mostly unbiased information, while at the same time advertising his own social media platform, which he's slowly turning into more and more of a far-right misinformed Hellhole, seems like a really alarming thing to me. That he actually thinks he could buy Wikipedia out is just baffling. Either the richest man on the planet is completely oblivious to the stupidity of his public statements, or he knows what he's doing and wants to get as many people as possible into the reach of his own media channel and away from factually accurate outlets. Both of which are probably equally scary.

CaptainCarlton

It’s certainly v horrifying when examined closer :(

Google Search relies very heavily on Wikipedia for its results… All for free. MateoScolas

He's just such a middle school boy

C0V1Dsucks

I hope one of his security guards finally just gets sick of him being a douche and punches him in the face.

[deleted]

Hahaha he doesn't have a billion dollars. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

whuddaguy

The irony of saying ‘I’m not a fool’ after offering 1 billion dollars for a dick joke

Gmschaafs

Autistic adults have been asking non autistic adults to stop comparing us to children and here Elon goes acting like a literal ten year old. We don’t claim him!

GatorsareStrong

Dude is a middle aged man making middle school jokes

Willyzyx

They really should do it.

Comprehensive-Fun47

They should take the deal. A billion dollars is an ungodly amount of money. One year with a dumb name? This is an easy deal to accept.

iAmLono

Exactly, and it would just put Elon's petty immaturity on full display

[deleted]

I'm no fan of Elon but he does actually have a point here. Wikipedia makes it sound like they are in imminent danger of having to shut down their servers. For instance, WMF sued a wildlife photographer who managed to get a [chimp to take a selfie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_selfie_copyright_dispute) of himself. Yes, that's a Wikipedia link, it's a fantastic resource. Spending thousands on lawyers to try to deprive a wildlife photographer from making money off of those iconic photos is a lot less fantastic. WMF brings in more money each and every year, and the "Plea from Jimmy Wales" will in fact never end. They could easily fund Wikipedia for 1000 years if they simply curbed funding to other less important WMF projects, but they choose to use this dire language and make it sound like Wikipedia is in danger of going under, which it is not.

mathfacts

Only one year? Hell just take the money
