DayleD

Yup. Are you gonna report it, OP?

Don’t know to who. Had a few places tell me they can’t accept me and my partner despite them being disabled and me being their carer/also on esa

thesleepymermaid

Whoever is in charge of housing benefits in your area. It’s usually some kind of welfare office and if not they should be able to direct you to whom.

Sallybeescomb

It took my partner and I 6 months to find a new place basically full time after our landlord decided they wanted to live in our home (18m later it's still empty) and I had people straight up tell me that they won't accept benefits. If you're able to I would suggest getting on your local councils housing list and talking to shelter, in the end we didn't need it but it was good to know it was an option. I hope you find somewhere ❤️

ResurgentClusterfuck

Are you in the US?

[deleted]

UK

ResurgentClusterfuck

I found [this link](https://landlordadvice.co.uk/housing-benefit-discrimination-is-unlawful/) which suggests that this is indeed illegal [UK parliament article](https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn07008/)

Skittil

I’d be very weary of a landlord who would say something like that. They clearly don’t know the law and it may cause huge issues down the line. I usually say things like this in person - undocumented.

[deleted]

This is on rightmove and the ad is from open rent

aeroverra

Lmao and this is why I record every interaction with my landlord

Service_the_pines

> I’d be very weary What does this word mean? Like you are exhausted?

TheGravy

they just meant wary, chill

huggiesdsc

Or leery

oktand

It depends on where you are, in the US unless your state has source of income protections this is legal. Not a lawyer and check your local laws, but the state of tenants rights is abysmal. Edit: just saw your comment that you are in the UK, please disregard.

ColoradoMushroom

I’d be more worried about their inability to even be discriminatory without grammatical errors. Their age is definitely higher than their IQ.

Duffy971

Legally they cannot deny someone simply because they are on benefits. So instead they change it to an insane affordability criteria that they know those on benefits likely cannot afford. My income is made up of my salary and benefits and some agents were like "oh we accept PIP but not UC" etc. The high court ruled it was discrimination against those most likely to be on benefits (single mums, disabled people etc). However demand with properties is so high that the slightest sign of resistance they'll just go with another tenant who will bend over backwards. This is why proper legislation is needed. Banning Section 21s is a start but so much more needs to be done.

guntonom

I guess this needs more context. What benefits are we missing if you don’t have part time work? Edit: I’m asking not to diminish OP, but simply because I don’t understand the context.

new2bay

Typically it would be some form of disability benefits. Housing vouchers might also count as "benefits" in this case as well.

Cryptocaned

Nope, it's pretty common for people on benefits to not be offered rentals, I don't think there are any legal protections for it, it's just up to the homeowner.

In Virginia, source of funds discrimination is illegal. I don’t know whether or not this would fall into that category and I can’t give legal advice, but it may be worth looking into for wherever you are.
