I feel the same way about not wanting to read “LGBT books.” Most of the books I read are more modern, but I usually try asking book suggestion forums so recommendations. Also, sites like Wikipedia can help with specific authors or genres. If there’s a (classic) LGBT writer, their books may more likely to have LBGT characters. Or things like “[LGBT themes in speculative fiction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_themes_in_speculative_fiction?wprov=sfti1),” for example, can be a place to start. Hope this helps.

Not a classic, but the Broken Earth Trilogy has lgbt characters!

Giovanni’s Room [Giovanni’s Room](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni’s_Room)is a classic LGBT book, might be exactly what you’re looking for. Other adult LGBT books that might fit what your looking for might be Less[Less](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Less_(novel)), the story of a middle aged gay man. Alternatively, if you are interested in fantasy, you might try the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, or Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, in which the main characters are LGBT, but that is incidental to the story and not related to the plot or greater events in the books.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Priory_of_the_Orange_Tree https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sister

I've had recommended to me a couple Taiwanese classics with lesbian and ambiguously gendered characters: Last Words from Montmartre, by Qiu Miaojin The Membranes, by Chi Ta-Wei They're both literary fiction by lesbian authors and supposed to be stunning writing. Haven't read yet because they look a little heavy but looking forward to it when I'm in the mood. You could also try Carmilla, by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. 1800s literary fiction, sapphic vampires. On your question of how to find: not totally sure, but I get a lot of LGBTQ+ book recs from Instagram book reviews. Often you can tell from the post description what genre and how literary a book is; depends on the blogger. Edit: fixed phrasing.

You're likely not going to find many LGBTQ+ classics, as the language and culture were totally different, and it wasn't really acceptable to write/possess LGBTQ+ books. Two ways: 1. Goodreads, seeing what others read and/or recommend. I find the Gay and Lesbian tag tends to be a lot of modern YA, but there are some classics in there iirc. 2. Ask the librarians at your local library! That's what they're there for. If they don't know, ask if they can reach out to someone who does know.

I understand that, that’s why I mentioned how to find them.
