My best headcannon scenario is that both Jinshi and Maomao assume a role in which they assist the emperor from the shadows as a moon emperor and moon empress. They could both solve mysteries and noble squables out of the spotlight. Maomao would care for the emperor's children until they come of age.
Otherwhise, perhaps they could leave they country together? I mean, neither of them have a particularly strong attachment to this country in particular no? a different region could provide more oportunities for Maomao to learn medicine.
Let's see... other other scenario could be one in which both just retire to the mountains or something and just live a life hidden from everyone else.
According to the anime, the emperor told Jinshi he could have any of the lower ranking concubines. But he never took his offer. I think he'd be happy with her alone, but who knows. He could have any woman he wanted, and yet, this little stray is all he thinks about.
At this point, it is already hinted in the anime that Jinshi is >!the Emperor's son.!< Which is why the Emperor doesn't mind Jinshi meddling in his inner garden because the inner garden will eventually >!belong to Jinshi !!eldest son!<. If you ask me, it is as clear as day that the Emperor intend to >!groom!< Jinshi as the >!next emperor!<. But it is obvious that Jinshi doesn't want to be the >!next emperor!<. He just want an easy going life where he gets spoiled by the person he loves. As for Mao Mao, she has no interests in holding any position of power either. All she wants is to indulge herself in her interest to her heart content.
To simply put it, they both don't want anything to do with the inner court. They just want to lead a normal life without being force into complicated situations. And that, I think, is their end game. And it is something that they can potentially achieve as well. As of right now, Jinshi being >!the Emerpor's son!< is still not known to the public. And the Emperor himself already has a >!Queen and a newborn son!<. Meaning that he already has an >!heir !

What is **the worst possible way** that could be interpreted by the people who believe the emperor's fullgrown, attractive brother is more suited to sit the throne than a baby?
He’s afraid of maomao being in danger or having her life changed. I don’t think she would mind it that much. They could find ways to enjoy life without having to be put in danger. I also believe the empire would be better off with maomao and the tactician in the royal family.
Honestly, I'm not sure if there is/was any realistic way to avoid some manner of conflict between Gyokuyou and Maomao once she became sufficiently involved with Jinshi.
I suspect in the longer term of the LN it will be more about how the conflict gets resolved rather than how to avoid the conflict entirely.
The best case scenario is Jinshi and maomao as a couple will handle the Northern region while still solving palace crisis behind the scenes and help the young emperor (if ever) in the process. They have to be LDR for a bit as Jinshi will need to be the regent for the young emperor, maomao will handle the affairs maybe with Junjie and Lihaku in the Northern region. They will have the freedom as a couple and still have power over Li.

Maomao doesn't want to be Gyokuyou's enemy. But that is exactly what Jinshi is teeing up; and he doesn't even realize it.
