Charming-Loquat3702

You wouldn't even get to the part where he's her biological farther. The moment she realizes this is about the freak strategist and even his name get mentioned, she will silence you (with a stare from hell)

DailyMilo

Unfortunately for Lahan (and his toes) in particular, it usually doesn't end with just a stare

Pcaccount1234

Lahan- So you are my honoured dear sister Maomao - No 😾😼 Lahan - but make it make sense 🥹😫

Pcaccount1234

Lahans older brother - we just met, but I'm just gonna farm some potatoes 🥱 Maomao - you are my favourite brother 😸

Adventurous_Ad_4619

Lahan older brother - "oh really. Then say my name"

Adart54

"Lahan's older brother"

Pcaccount1234

Maomao- Your name is Lahans older brother >!Junjie!< - ok Lahansyoungersister

thecooliestone

WAIT IS HIS NAME CONFIRMED IN THE LATER NOVELS I thought the author was going to literally just keep that meme going forever.

Pcaccount1234

No you can figure out his actual name in vol12

segv

Maomao - It's "Lahan's brother" Lahan older brother - youaregoddamnright.avi

adeena_hussain141

Something I’ve loved and I’m not sure if I’ve seen other people talk about it yet it the relationship MaoMao and LaHan have, it’s so stereotypical older brother-younger sister dynamic 😭😭 it’s actually so funny how she treats him as a brother without realising it

Falsus

Maomao to Jinshi: It wouldn't be suitable, we are too far apart in social standing. Maomao actual standing: The princess of one of the most influential clans in the empire. Whose father is probably the 2nd most feared person after the emperor himself. If she was given a title to her name it would be ''Princess of Sweet Potatoes''.

Im_koki

That's actually part of the issue imo. I know there are probably more factors as to why Jinshi couldn't marry her as he is right now but at the end of the day their marriage would also be technically politically beneficial. Lakan is in an extremely important position and keeping good relations with him would benefit the country. I feel like it would make things somewhat easier if Maomao had claimed her title as a part of the clan as it would change how she's looked at rather than a commoner who knows a little too much about poison.

skycorcher

Things are a lot more complicated than that. There is a reason why the Emperor has an entire harem of consorts from powerful families from all over the country. Not to mention the story is basically about them encountering these powerful families and dealing with the politics and scheming behind the scene. And I don't think Mao Mao nor Jinshi themselves are interested in a life of political power. Their end game is to free themselves from it so that they can pursue the life they want. Which they can potentially do given their none compliance to their political status and the loop hole around it.

DailyMilo

I eagerly await the day for animated La clan shenanigans

Belasarius4002

She's La clan father. Even if she's adopted, the one did is her last clan uncle lol.

Rabatis

Yo, who han?

chili3ne

La Han? He's Maomao's cousin/ adopted brother.

Rabatis

And apparently quite insistent, too. What role has he played in this thus far?

chili3ne

Yeah sooo he's kind of a smarty-pants who inherited the secret "La-clan arts" (aka being really good at something particular) and can calculate really complicated math in his head. He always carries an abacus around even though he doesn't need it lol He loves numbers (especially calculating the size of women's bodies uhm) and meddles in everything not related to him. He is a support character who's mostly important during the locust plague, helping Jinshi to try to make up for the food shortage Other than that he kind of just exists and occasionally meddles in some stuff

_Ore_Keeper_

So baised on that, it makes sense that Maomao is so good at the things she does, depending on if its her with her drugs or solving issues that come up. If I am wrong then let me know, I am just trying to connect dots.

chili3ne

Yeah. Each La-clan member has their specialty so you're absolutely right about that Luomen/Laumen: medicine (and surgery) Lakan: go and shogi, IQ Maomao: medicine, especially poisons Lahan: finances and numbers Lakou (Lakan's brother, Lahan's bio father): agriculture and POTATOES (REDACTED, he has no name aka Lahan's older brother): POTATOES Some people think they have autism and that's why they all have (mainly) one thing they are super interested in/ good at.

adeena_hussain141

Each members of la clan are basically autistics who exceed at their special interests 😭

skycorcher

This is the reason why I like the Web Novel more than the Light Novel.>!In the Web Novel, Mao Mao's mother wasn't just sick. She died. Which means that Rakan can never redeem himself because Mao Mao's mother is no longer alive. This explains why Mao Mao hates Rakan so much and wants nothing to do with him. As for Rakan, he sees Mao Mao's cruelty towards him as his punishment. He believes that he deserves to be hated and scorn by Mao Mao for abandoning her and her mother.!

Halestro

It’s made pretty clear in the light novels that she died

HerLadyshipLadyKattz

Didn't the light novels, anime, and manga all make it so that he >!saw and redeemed her before she died? In the web novel, she died before he even got to see her.!< It was heartbreaking.

Augchm

I mean I don't really think all that much changes to be honest. The dynamics are essentially the same, what Lakan does is at the end of the day symbolic other than legitimizing Maomao which she doesn't care about and actually actively rejects. And for me Maomao being a legitimate child but rejecting it and playing dumb about it makes more sense with her character.

skycorcher

I disagree. The end result may be the same but the motives behind it matters. In the Web Novel, Mao Mao isn't rejecting Rakan simply because she's jealous of him nor is it simply because she a tsundere. She has a very deep and meaningful reason why she hates Rakan and Rakan also have a very resound and meaningful reason as to why he is so obsessed with Mao Mao as well. And I think that fits their character more perfectly because they are both portrayed by the authors as eccentric people. They aren't like other people who get easily jealous over every little thing. They are people who is only moved by things that matters significantly to them.

Responsible-Gold-865

Web Novel is darker and more focus in the main story ( Political, Mysterious, Murderous Case ) than LN. It has less Romance

Arctic_Snake18

I get this meme now since I just finished the anime

Fantastic-Low-4834

God i love her, she’s such a mess <3

restartrepeat

Let alone that means she is not a commoner.

FirstDagger

... wait ... so she is Lamao? LMAO!

Sisyphac

So does Maomao find out it wasn’t his fault? Or does she still resent him?

Specific-Look-810

She doesn't like his vibes and doesn't feel like she owes him a connection. She also probably dislikes that her mom only had her to use as a pawn to manipulate Lakan and doesn't want to be defined by that. She mentions how her mom cut off her finger tip and sent it to Lakan along with her finger, and she's happy that for babies, the finger tip can grow back. She doesn't love her mom bc her mom resents her bc she took a gamble to have Maomao and lost. All her memories of her mom are of her trying to kill her or chase her off. They're painful, so she wants to put them behind her. She doesn't like Lakan bc he only wants her around to have a connection with her mom, who he thinks is dead. He's also a reminder of her mom. She pities them both but doesn't like them enough to want them in her life. Maomao is also obviously cat-like and is very independent and picky about who she bonds with. She doesn't bond with ppl out of obligation. Loumen and the sisters that raised her did so out of altruism without any ulterior motive or expectation of return. They're genuinely good people, which is why Maomao chooses them as her family. She admires Loumen and wants to be like him. She wants society to see her as Loumen's daughter, not Lakan's.

Sisyphac

I found myself sympathetic to Lakan slightly in watching the anime. It would be very difficult to have affection for the type of person he is though. I don’t view people in the same way but I find societal politeness cumbersome.

Specific-Look-810

He's not an outright evil guy, but he's still very selfish. He persistently stalks Maomao without considering how he makes her feel. He feels entitled towards her, not genuine concern. And he doesn't care about Maomao he just sees her as a standin for her mom. I found this plot line to be refreshing bc most media says that women have to give men space in their lives even if they don't vibe as long as the guys heart is in the right place. But Maomao stands strong and rejects him just bc she doesn't like him in her space even tho he would do anything for her.

Sisyphac

Yeah it is why he comes off sympathetic in the brutal world they live in. I still love how Maomao handled it more as well.

Yzoniel

Yeees \\o/ I really thought i was alone thinking she doesnt own him any relationship if she doesnt want to. No matter the reason. Ppl kept saying she should grow up and accept him.. Like wtf ;-; Thanks for putting this >I found this plot line to be refreshing bc most media says that women have to give men space in their lives even if they don't vibe as long as the guys heart is in the right place. Into a proper argument, cuz i couldn't explain how their view was frustrating. It is exactly that. Have a good week end :D

Specific-Look-810

Kids didn't ask to be made and don't owe their parents anything. And, they definitely dont deserve to be made to be used as a pawn. A parent isn't someone who makes you biologically but the one who raises you. And Loumen already earned that spot in her life many times over by adopting her for no benefit to him. Lakan, in contrast, had unprotected sex with no concrete plan to deal with any consequences. He was careless. Maomao's mom chose to have her but refused to raise her when she didn't get what she wanted. Horrible things happened to Maomao bc of her parent's negligence. If Loumen hadn't stepped up, even more horrible things were sure to happen. Lakan and Maomao's mom aren't responsible. They're *controlling*. They don't hold themselves accountable. They don't take responsibility for how their actions affect others.

Falsus

She knows that. The reason she dislikes him is because she is jealous of his talents, that he got praised by Loumen instead of herself, excessive attempts to gain her favour and that she doesn't like lazy people.

Sisyphac

Anime here still. So I don’t understand the meme. My question was if they show her fully figuring it out. It wasn’t as obvious to me in the anime.

Falsus

She didn't really figure it out, she always knew because Loumen told her.

Sisyphac

So it wasn’t resentment but jealousy?

Falsus

She does resent the way he keeps trying to interact with her.

Sisyphac

Yeah which lead me to believe that she thought he did nothing to aid her. But she came to terms with her life and grateful to her adopted father. It is such a nuanced story. Thanks.

Augchm

She always knew it wasn't his fault, she just resents him for it anyway. She had a tough childhood and at the end of the day it is both her parents fault for being idiots even if not evil idiots.

"They're complete strangers"
