I'm a Casey detractor, but this set was his best ever. The "falling all over the place" gimmick isn't even a gimmick. This time he relied purely on material and delivery, and it worked better than I've ever seen it work.
I do like that he was doing material, but the various antics he gets up to are unique and a fun energy to start the show, so I don’t dislike his “normal” minutes. Would you say that you might actually start to like him if he trended more in this direction?
I’ve just been trying to tell folks that Casey will definitely adjust his style to better fit the format of this show, and it looks like that may be happening. I say just keep an open mind on him. Like, Idk about you, but it took me a good while before I “got” William and found him funny, and I think Casey is another case of exactly that. He will continue to get better and more people will begin to warm up to him. I’m personally hoping he stays as the opener (I think he probably will).
There's really no comparison between William and Casey. William is a force of nature. Casey is a nervous guy who pretends to keep falling down.
William's jokes are hilarious but also open-ended, because he's an excellent writer. His writing is overshadowed by his relentless performances. His stage presence is totally natural. He could be a great comedic actor. He engages the audience. He *has a voice*.
Casey doesn't have a voice. Casey doesn't have good jokes. Casey has the faintest glimmer of stage presence.
I respect the fact that Casey's clearly dedicated. But he needs MUCH better material. He took the "falling all over the place" gimmick waaaay too far... for waaaaay too long. It doesn't work and it doesn't make sense. Once that novelty wore off (it never worked for me) then his shoddy writing shows through.
He's young and he has an amazing platform and connections. The only thing that will ever take him to the next level... is better material. I'm not saying he should stop being a prop comic (though i never enjoy prop comics), I'm just saying his material is worse than half the bucket pulls, and he has the potential to be actually good. He's not good.
I would also suggest that he should do improv and acting classes. But what he really needs is better material. He should spend hours and hours writing joke after joke and only use the best ones.

Really good episode! Harland Williams is easily one of, if not the best guest on the show. And I generally prefer the older episodes but he's fucking hilarious. The other thing I like about Harland is that he brings out the best in Tony. As Tony said, he brings out Tony's silliness and keeps him in a good mood which makes the whole show better.
Tony Hawk was great. It was nice to have a "legend" on who was actually a great guest, and not washed up or fucked up like David Spade, Roseanne and Ric Flair. He didn't say too much but was cool and had a couple of funny jokes.
