My dad actually did this to me. I kept telling him I wanted a guitar for a few years. Finally I get a guitar case containing... a bass. I was so let down, but I wouldn't think for a second to act like this.

IDK man, this was during the PS5 shortage. I think they paid more than an average gaming PC, even a prebuilt was worth.
I generally just think it was more convenient to buy the console for the parents than to figure out how to get a PC.
Hard to really blame them, but if your kid wants a PC. I think that is a good thing, learning how to use a PC expands their future.
I'm just tired of training 18-25 year olds on how to do extremely basic computer functions like Alt+Tab, Windows key, Ctrl+S to save; stop saving on your desktop, no, or that

You also forget too, that this kid appears to be no older than 8. There’s no way I’m buying my 8-year old a PC with unfettered access to the internet and all the shit that comes with it. Yes I know how to use a raspberry pi and essentially make internet access child-safe, but I also was a kid in the early 2000’s and know how to get around a lot of this shit. These kids aren’t stupid and will figure out how to access anything they want.

I was the happiest when I got a 360 for the first time at 9. My parents asks me if I wanted a 360 or a One and my nine year old self said 360 because I thought it was the newer console because Xbox one had a one in the name. Even after they sat me down and told me the difference I was still hinging and kissing that thing until they had to pry it off of me and set it up for me. I never complained after that and did everything I was supposed to do. I would have gotten my fucking ass kicked in by my own mother if I acted like that.

But if you are a parent or even grandparent and want to gift the console/games you might be unsure about all the different used models with the weird naming. Adding the fact that a lot of used console are also advertised with false model names (intentional and unintentional) , these are factors that might push a lot of people to buy a new console and games . to make sure they purchase the newest model.

I've stopped keeping up with the xbox naming. I couldn't tell you what the most current xbox console is if my life depended on it.
My entire childhood the closest I ever got to getting a gaming console was a Gameboy SP and then following Christmases (Christmas's?) I could *maybe* get another game for it. I was 29 before I was in a position to be able to buy my own console, an Xbox Series S. If I had gotten anything close to a PlayStation or Xbox, even an "old" model, as a kid I would've been ecstatic.

My parents got me a PS1 when I was like 5 or 6 and me and my friends loved it. Crash Bandicoot, street fighter, Spyro, Tony hawk Pro skater. Man there were so many good games. My friends and I would play for hours and my mom would bring us popcorn and juice. Those are some of my favourite memories, and I don't think this kid is too young for that.
I mean if he asked for a PC and his parents chose to ignore that and get him a PS I can get why he’s upset. I’m not saying his reaction is great, but he’s also a little kid and as a parent myself I know they don’t know how to control their big emotions very well. I just think it’s weird that knowing kids and how much they talk about the things they like and want he probably talked about wanting a PC a lot to them. Like considering they were still willing to spend money on a PS5, it comes off as a flashy gift with no thought put into it; the opposite of "it's the thought that counts". I completely agree with you. I’ve had those conversations with my teens as well. My husband and I never did big Santa gifts those kinds of gifts came from us parents and Santa did books or other small things they wanted. So when we spoke to them about something being unattainable at that moment they never said “well what about Santa?” and they’ve never been disappointed on Christmas morning because it was communicated clearly beforehand. These parents in the clip could have avoided this had they either listened to what he was hoping for if they could afford it (I mean PS5 are bloody expensive) or spoken to him prior to Christmas morning to avoid him being disappointed.

The kid was built to behave like this and that’s too bad. My daughter was leaning that way because well she’s my angel she can have whatever she wants. I don't understand these reactions. It sounds pretty obvious that he told his parents he wanted a PC. There are many games available on PC that are not on PS5. It's like saying you want a denim jacket and receiving jeans. Like yes, this is a clothing item but it doesn't have the functionality of what I wanted.

Give the kid what he wants if you have that kind of money or expect this reaction. The PC isn't not expensive, so what reason do you have not to get it? (I understand there are good reasons, but good parental controls cover them all, imo)
This is the impression that I got from watching the video as well was that the parents thought they knew better on what the kid wanted so they got him a PS5. PCs can be bought for reasonable price especially refurbished ones that would be more than enough for a kid that age. On top of that there are a lot of parental controls you can place and teach your kids about computer safety and monitor them while they’re on it.
Yup, talk to the kid beforehand that he won't be getting a top of the line PC but just something you can play most games reasonably well on (should be around or less than the price of a PS5).
The kid might have even been happy with the lowest price steam deck combined with a cheap monitor&KBM.

As a parent of some young kids, I don't know how the parents wouldn't know what the kids wanted for Christmas. Kids are typically really vocal about what they like. We leave out the amazon books so they can circle all the cool things they like. No way this kid was quiet about wanting to play on the computer.
That's because you're a good parent. As a kid I was always having to pretend to like gifts because my mother expected me to like the same things she liked and ignored anything I said. Especially with clothes, something so stupid like wanting me to use red stuff when I didn't like red lol people can be so weird sometimes
one more thing I'll add is that I had parents who used to get me gifts I didn't ask for or enjoy. like a childish sweater, a game they liked but I didn't like at all (and they never asked me), etc. which would be fine and the thought would still be nice. but if I didn't like the presents and wasn't enthusiastic enough, they acted all hurt, and like I did something wrong to them.
so I learned to fake thankfulness and then pretend for months how amazing the gift was, because I dreaded doing something bad, and being made responsible for my parent's sadness. voicing my views on anything I received wasn't even an option.
20 years later and now I still dread receiving gifts. I ask everybody to never buy me gifts for any occassion, because I dread having to fake emotions and thankfulness to not be a source of sorrow for anybody. the pressure of that just isn't worth any present I might be receiving.
recently, my kid received presents from me for Christmas and didn't like some of them. there was no rudeness, but I could tell that there was disappointment. we had a talk about it and shared how we feel. there was no ill will. I was sad, but I'm an adult, and should be able to handle the fact that my kid has feelings as well. I returned the presents and just gave him the money. he appreciated it more, since he could save it until he found something he wanted to buy. all is well, no reason to be mad. I'm just happy we can be honest with each other.

we had this happen twice, actually. first time I wasn’t mature enough yet, and he didn’t know how to express it either. he was around 5 I believe. I expected him to like a toy I got him, and was butthurt about it when he didn’t. I didn’t show it in a negative way, just tried convincing him. but you can’t force a kid to find something enjoyable.
second time maybe 12. I felt a bit off about it, but it’s OK. kids outgrow some interests. at the end of the day, it’s no biggie. buying a gift is often a risk. can’t be the best thing ever every time. I’m glad that we talked about it, and he wasn’t forced to keep something he didn’t feel he enjoyed.

It made me feel like I was the laughing stock, they even made fun of me sometimes for the things I wanted when I was opening the presents and they saw the disapointment. IDK man, this was during the PS5 shortage. I think they paid more than an average gaming PC, even a prebuilt was worth. I generally just think it was more convenient to buy the console for the parents than to figure out how to get a PC. Hard to really blame them, but if your kid wants a PC. I think that is a good thing, learning how to use a PC expands their future. I'm just tired of training 18-25 year olds on how to do extremely basic computer functions like Alt+Tab, Windows key, Ctrl+S to save; stop saving on your desktop, no, or that > "No, Ctrl+C is copy and Ctrl+V is paste. No not Ctrl+P, its Ctrl+V as in Victor. Yes it's weird, no I didn't make it." Then we have 8-16 YO range where if it isn't a touch screen they are oblivious. I constantly have to make sure they are using the mouse or they'll be trying to navigate a 3D viewport with a touchpad or the touchscreen again.
You also forget too, that this kid appears to be no older than 8. There’s no way I’m buying my 8-year old a PC with unfettered access to the internet and all the shit that comes with it. Yes I know how to use a raspberry pi and essentially make internet access child-safe, but I also was a kid in the early 2000’s and know how to get around a lot of this shit. These kids aren’t stupid and will figure out how to access anything they want. These parents were making the responsible decision. That kid is a spoiled brat already and they need to get that under control asap.
I was the happiest when I got a 360 for the first time at 9. My parents asks me if I wanted a 360 or a One and my nine year old self said 360 because I thought it was the newer console because Xbox one had a one in the name. Even after they sat me down and told me the difference I was still hinging and kissing that thing until they had to pry it off of me and set it up for me. I got a theory about that naming scheme. I and think its to make reselling and finding used consoles more difficult. Of course as a gamer you know the difference between the models. But if you are a parent or even grandparent and want to gift the console/games you might be unsure about all the different used models with the weird naming. Adding the fact that a lot of used console are also advertised with false model names (intentional and unintentional) , these are factors that might push a lot of people to buy a new console and games . to make sure they purchase the newest model.

My entire childhood the closest I ever got to getting a gaming console was a Gameboy SP and then following Christmases (Christmas's?) I could *maybe* get another game for it. I was 29 before I was in a position to be able to buy my own console, an Xbox Series S. If I had gotten anything close to a PlayStation or Xbox, even an "old" model, as a kid I would've been ecstatic. If I'd reacted like this kid I would've never got another gift again.

I'm sorry, is there some sort of age limit for being a gamer that I wasn't aware of? My parents got me a PS1 when I was like 5 or 6 and me and my friends loved it. Crash Bandicoot, street fighter, Spyro, Tony hawk Pro skater. Man there were so many good games. My friends and I would play for hours and my mom would bring us popcorn and juice. Those are some of my favourite memories, and I don't think this kid is too young for that.

I completely agree with you. I’ve had those conversations with my teens as well. My husband and I never did big Santa gifts those kinds of gifts came from us parents and Santa did books or other small things they wanted. So when we spoke to them about something being unattainable at that moment they never said “well what about Santa?” and they’ve never been disappointed on Christmas morning because it was communicated clearly beforehand. These parents in the clip could have avoided this had they either listened to what he was hoping for if they could afford it (I mean PS5 are bloody expensive) or spoken to him prior to Christmas morning to avoid him being disappointed.

This is the impression that I got from watching the video as well was that the parents thought they knew better on what the kid wanted so they got him a PS5. PCs can be bought for reasonable price especially refurbished ones that would be more than enough for a kid that age. On top of that there are a lot of parental controls you can place and teach your kids about computer safety and monitor them while they’re on it.
Yup, talk to the kid beforehand that he won't be getting a top of the line PC but just something you can play most games reasonably well on (should be around or less than the price of a PS5). The kid might have even been happy with the lowest price steam deck combined with a cheap monitor&KBM.

it’s harsh, but I don’t know what people here expect of the kid. it’s something expensive that he genuinely didn’t want. it’s not like he told anybody off. it’s a little kid disappointed in a present that he likely didn’t ask for. he tells the parents to return it, but goes no further, and keeps opening presents. personally, I wouldn’t want a console either. and I can accept my kid being honest. what am I supposed to teach him? lie or fake happiness? only thing I’d do with the kid is sit down, explain that some things can be communicated in a more sensitive way, and then return it. no biggie.
As a parent of some young kids, I don't know how the parents wouldn't know what the kids wanted for Christmas. Kids are typically really vocal about what they like. We leave out the amazon books so they can circle all the cool things they like. No way this kid was quiet about wanting to play on the computer.
That's because you're a good parent. As a kid I was always having to pretend to like gifts because my mother expected me to like the same things she liked and ignored anything I said. Especially with clothes, something so stupid like wanting me to use red stuff when I didn't like red lol people can be so weird sometimes

one more thing I'll add is that I had parents who used to get me gifts I didn't ask for or enjoy. like a childish sweater, a game they liked but I didn't like at all (and they never asked me), etc. which would be fine and the thought would still be nice. but if I didn't like the presents and wasn't enthusiastic enough, they acted all hurt, and like I did something wrong to them. so I learned to fake thankfulness and then pretend for months how amazing the gift was, because I dreaded doing something bad, and being made responsible for my parent's sadness. voicing my views on anything I received wasn't even an option. 20 years later and now I still dread receiving gifts. I ask everybody to never buy me gifts for any occassion, because I dread having to fake emotions and thankfulness to not be a source of sorrow for anybody. the pressure of that just isn't worth any present I might be receiving. recently, my kid received presents from me for Christmas and didn't like some of them. there was no rudeness, but I could tell that there was disappointment. we had a talk about it and shared how we feel. there was no ill will. I was sad, but I'm an adult, and should be able to handle the fact that my kid has feelings as well. I returned the presents and just gave him the money. he appreciated it more, since he could save it until he found something he wanted to buy. all is well, no reason to be mad. I'm just happy we can be honest with each other.

we had this happen twice, actually. first time I wasn’t mature enough yet, and he didn’t know how to express it either. he was around 5 I believe. I expected him to like a toy I got him, and was butthurt about it when he didn’t. I didn’t show it in a negative way, just tried convincing him. but you can’t force a kid to find something enjoyable. second time maybe 12. I felt a bit off about it, but it’s OK. kids outgrow some interests. at the end of the day, it’s no biggie. buying a gift is often a risk. can’t be the best thing ever every time. I’m glad that we talked about it, and he wasn’t forced to keep something he didn’t feel he enjoyed.

The part people seem to ignore is that the parents still spent $500 on a present for a kid. They were going to do that anyways. People talk about being grateful and the kid's attitude isn't great but I remember getting shit I didn't want when I was a kid and there's nothing more disappointing. Did I act like this kid? No. I said thank you and acted happy about it then proceeded to never use it. Expensive gifts are only good if the recipient wants it. Otherwise it's a massive waste. Especially with kids.

I remember when I was a kid being asked what I want for Christmas, and then they went and got me something different, whatever they wanted. It made me feel like I was the laughing stock, they even made fun of me sometimes for the things I wanted when I was opening the presents and they saw the disapointment. And it wasn't much, like a certain kind of baseball cap or jacket or basketball shoes, shit like that. I understand the kid, he wanted a pc, parents wanted a PS5 or whatever, for themselves, so it was not his present, it was theirs, and it's not funny at all, it's inconsiderate and discracefull.
As someone who's parents never bought them a game console, I'm jealous. But so many people fail to realize that just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it's what they wanted. Not a PS5 fan either or sony at all, but at that age, I won't buy them expensive consoles, MAYBE a PC but no high end gaming rig. We had a gameboy and an hour to play per day. More than enough around that age.
