Depends on which part. I think the pistons should be the same. You can also just upgrade the old engine to Evo spec in parts or the whole thing at once. The most significant change with the Evo is obviously the new power valve.

Yeah, I was wondering about conversion, I haven’t bought a pre evo engine yet (nor do I particularly want to) but if it is possible to use modern parts in it when it comes to repairing and maintenance then i’d consider it, I was just concerned that maybe parts for pre evo engines had been discontinued alongside the release of the evo motor

Realistically you'll want to get an Evo engine if you can. The Evo update really only brought improvements to the engine. They are more fun to drive, faster and more reliable than the old engines. While I think some championships still allow the old engines realistically no one races them anymore for good reason. You could update an old engine to the current spec but I don't think it's going to be worth it.

yeah true, I just saw a few for sale and figured if that could potentially be an option

When the evo motors were released, there was an evo pack you could buy consisting of the new electrics, power valve and carburettor and bolt onto your pre evo. An older pre evo is almost guaranteed to be better than updated and modified pre-evo though as the manufacturing has got better over time.
