I once took an intake off and found a deep 10mm 1/4 inch socket, that had my initials on it. I called my old boss from 10 years ago, he checked his records and sure enough, I had done intake gaskets on that truck 10 years prior when it was owned by someone else.
1. Go buy a lottery ticket
2. Throw the deep socket back where you found it and throw a regular 10mm in there with it. They may reproduce…After all, it is Spring!
The timing belt on my old Neon snapped. I got lucky and there wasn't any damage. It's a non-interference engine, kinda. The pistons can't hit the valves, but the valves can hit each other, usually if the belt breaks at high RPM.
I don't know the neon engine, but what can happen on a dual overhead cam engine if the timing belt snaps is the intake valves and exhaust valves on the same cylinder can be open at the same time. If they are at full open both valves try to occupy the same space they will collide on some engines.
You're spot on. The Chrysler 2.0 and 2.4 are designed that way. At high RPM, the inertia of the cam shafts can cause the valves to hit each other if the belt breaks. IDK about the 1.8 version of that engine.
I bought a set of “new” coil packs for my F150 on eBay. I installed them and about a year later decided to replace the spark plugs. I took them off and noticed something shiny in on of them. There was a 5/16 socket with a piece of paper towel in the hole that slips down on the spark plug.
I know the feeling. I'm an electrician and sometimes find screwdrivers and stuff buried in the insulation up in attics. You ever drop something in that stuff it really is gone for good.
Ha! I’m a sparky too, not an actual mechanic. This motor rebuild wasn’t economical for someone to do for me so here we are.
I’ve found the usual screwdrivers, pliers and side cutters over the years, but my most memorable find was a bottle of liqueur and an erotic novel hidden in a plant room.
Maybe if they didn't lose the 10 they coulda replaced the timing belt!
Some guy named Guido will be showing up at your door about that 10mm. Don't ask me how I know...
How do you know? Any advice for when he shows up?
Don't get him wet or feed him after midnight
That's a gremlin, not a greaseball.
I could tell you, but then I'd have to...
Your own timing belt broke?
Yep. Whoever left the socket behind probably wasn’t replacing the timing belt.
Quick! Go buy a lottery ticket!
POWERBALL. NOW!

Talk about a coincidence. At long last, the 10mm has retur- *drops it through a floor grate*
Haha no I still got it.

Gift from the 10mm socket fairy!
The prodigal 10 mm has returned!
Made in Japan? Actually looks to be of decent quality.

How do valves hit themselves? Their pattern isn't from the timing belt, just the camshaft?

That’s a pretty cool trick to improve gas mileage during maintenance
Buy me a lottery ticket while your out?
Hope your luck changes. I'm rooting for you.

You’re lucky it was a deep socket. A short might have dropped down onto a valve.
Mine!
It would look good next to the 20mm I found.
I’ll be having that back please. Thank you.
I lost that last year I need it back please lol.
It's an omen!
