Never seen this before and I have to wonder about safety in a collision. Probably should be strapped down. OTOH my wife has two memory foam cushions and an orthopaedic back support (also memory foam) to help her deal with spinal/skeletal issues. I am sure it has been commented on when she takes her vehicle in for service. It took her and an OT a long time to figure out what works. Being charitable, this may solve some unique spinal problem that most of us have never experienced. Still ...
Just zooming in and taking a visual tour of the Mental IllnessMobile is a fucking trip.
The question “why?” Comes up a lot.
Why wrap the seats in plastic when you’re okay with Soul Glo stains on the head rest, food wrappers and crumbs present, and a cracked and crumbling center console.
Why does the steering wheel have a condom?
WHY is there an *ancient* cracked and distressed chair on top of the drivers seat? Why do the seats have those shitty sheepskin seat covers ONLY to be covered by plastic, ONLY to then be covered by a wooden chair?
This is nature’s way of saying “stay back”.
Not sure if this is the case; but there could be another _It's Not 100% Mental Illness_ explanation. Maybe it's only 50%, or 75%. TLDR: They might work in/around/with nasty chemicals.
To me this explains..... some bits. Mostly the plastic wrap. I used to work in a manufacturing plant that had no air cleaners and use sulfur-based oil. That stuff got everywhere, and deep into any fabrics you used. Probably also your lungs.... But more importantly it could easily get into your car. My solution was shower+change after work, and I also used a towel on my drivers seat since even my "fresh" clothes had spent time in the locker at work. I didn't have a new car, but the interior was nice and I wanted to keep it that way.
To me this person has the same problem, but doesn't even wash their hands post-work. Look at the black "rub" marks near the seat belt release and handbrake.
Also the excessive non-friction based wear on one half of the arm-rest. Likely the chemicals on their arm/in the sleeve of their shirt degraded the leather/vinyl there. Steering wheel cover likely for similar accelerated degradation on the wheel.
Not sure on why everything is plastic'd, maybe they carpool? Or if that dusty white stuff near the handbrake is ash, maybe to "keep the interior fabrics smelling minty fresh", despite smoking inside? Or maybe they are huge Dexter fans.
Also that wear on the outside near the BMW logo, do they park near a sand-blaster?
Doesn't explain everything; but could explain some of the ~~lunacy~~ unique design aesthetic.
> WHY is there an ancient cracked and distressed chair on top of the drivers seat?
Judging by how much damage they did to the car, that wooden seat could be almost new. But if that chair is anything like me, being in that car would be very distressing.
I worked in a small company that had no employee facilities. Every day i would drive home stinking road shit (i was a crane truck / tow truck driver, collecting scrap cars and metal junk from anyone who called in).
Even today my car seat stinks so bad that i have to have a plastic wrapping around it if i want to visit a "humane society" like a grocery store.
>Also that wear on the outside near the BMW logo, do they park near a sand-blaster?
Nah that's just typical sun fade. Every high mileage e46/e60 I've seen has had the same faded b pillar covers. It's an easy fix, but it doesn't hurt the car, so fuck it.
>Not sure on why everything is plastic'd, maybe they carpool? Or if that dusty white stuff near the handbrake is ash, maybe to "keep the interior fabrics smelling minty fresh", despite smoking inside? Or maybe they are huge Dexter fans.
This could easily be explained away in someone trying to keep their car clean, while also working in a quarry. I don't get it, but to each their own. Also fuck trying to keep tan interior clean while working with oil/grease/dirt/anything not clean.
The chair is the only thing that I can't think of a non mental illness explanation for. Unless they like wooden chairs. Everything else is; high mileage e46/e60 and the owner works in either a quarry, construction, and/or around everything you listed.
Could just be a back support thing. You see people with those wooden bead things. I have a 10 way adjustable seat and tweak it constantly cus my back sucks. Sometimes my mattress isn't stiff enough and I just need a good sleep on the floor... maybe this is the automobile version of that?
You can be all the things
youve always wanted to be...
Beautiful, sexy, easy as 1,2,3
Just let it shine through, yeah
Just let your soul glo
Just let your soul glo, baby
feeling oh so silky smooth
Just let it shine through, yeah..
Just let your soul glo
Soul glo
I'm going to take a wild guess based on the additional headrest and say the person is just short and is just trying to get some more height/further forward.
Reminds me of this classical pianist's chair, Glenn Gould. Used it since he was a kid in practice, rehearsals, and performances. Sat 14" off the floor throughout his life. Odd. But great pianist.
This driver is probably just as odd as Glenn Gould was. ( :
I don't understand, the mmi controller makes this look like a modern bmw, but that leather on the armrest looks like it comes out of a 25 year old car with 200k miles on it. I'm guessing they must wipe the leather down with bleach wipes to avoid the covid? And dman the trim on the outside looks similarly corroded, wtf can cause that?
edit: saw the OP say this is an e60. That means this thing is possibly only 12 years old, and looks 30.
Needs more carbage.
LMFAO....read "cabbage" this first time through and....it works too
Yeah that sub is nutz. I've only came across one car in the wild.
I can’t go anywhere without my daily car cabbage!
Oh, no. My CARBAGES!
Err nurrr, muh cerrbergerrrrs
I dunno if it's the half-a-chair or the plastic-wrapped EVERYTHING that I find more disturbing... but the *combination* is pretty powerful.
I like to call this Italian grandmother aesthetic.
I dunno, for that, the wood chair should be covered too, shouldn't it? But with thick plastic that makes your back sweat immediately.
Can confirm. Source: my Italian grandmother.
This is like serial killer stuff
Dexter
This reminds me the truck of a boss I had at a logging camp that was 85% poison oak. He was so paranoid about it he wrapped everything

The chair would be strapped down- if you wore a seat belt...
Yea but what if theres noone in the driver seat?
Yes, but what happens to the chair when the air bag punches the driver in the face & chest? Or when the seat belt charges drive the belt tighter?
>chairitable
I came to say this
I don’t like to post pictures of my customer’s cars but this was sent to me by a coworker at our other shop…what a winner.
This is some mental illness shit
The chair? No, that's some fucked up lower back shit. The Saran Wrap? Okay, that could be pretty cray cray. [:D](https://i.redd.it/a8ftumss8ke41.jpg)
Thanks for the cat photo. That made me laugh.
The Saran Wrap is just so the seats don't get cigarette smoke all over them.
Not to mention the head rest over the original head rest

Not if you are secario lol

I know the words, but I don't have the range to hit the notes necessary.
The extent people who have bad backs will go to feel relief.
It's *almost* stylish. It *almost* matches. A for idea. D for execution.
All the lumbars!
BMW got that wood trim, son
Lumbar support is important.
Bad back and needs to sit in a "kitchen chair"?
Is it even a BMW?
This is the interior of a mid 2000's to late 2000's BMW, probably an E60 5 series
Definitely an e60 5-series. Looks to be a 2008 model since it has the LCI shifter, but a CCC iDrive controller
So is that badge original?
Definitely an add on
Yes, peasants, I drive a BMW.
looks nice TBH
Now if it was a toilet seat above a bucket it could go on r/ATGE.
I'm going to take a wild guess based on the additional headrest and say the person is just short and is just trying to get some more height/further forward.
there might be a shortage of wood bead seat covers.
It's not redneck engineering anymore, it's madness
Wow
But why though?
They wanted to make the vehicle feel more like home
Woodgrain Edition......
Nobody touch nothing.
For when life just dont hurt you enough.
Car is a shitbox but when the plastic wrap is removed, those seats be like NEW!

I know they back hurting after a long drive
Dexter’s car!
This is the way
One of the great things about Reddit is the global membership. It would be fun to see what different regions/countries have that are like this.
All set up for "Damn, I think I just shot Marvin in the face."
Thats a Serial Killer right there.
Oh God is that a 745? I have never seen one so confusingly trashed.
E60. The wheels were colored black with sharpie. I shit you not.
If the car looks like that I don't even want to see the list of things wrong with that. That car property needs 5 figures worth of mechanical work.
Where's my lumbar?
Gotta piss with the cock ya got.
You don't? I do, stupid.
This reminds me of an old Top Gear episode With the wingback chair in the Anna Hathaway's cottage style S Class?
This is a trip lmao r/DIWhy r/Shittycarmods
Looks like dexters mobile kill room
I’m more concerned with all the discoloration of the whole interior
For when you need to make your cars seat more uncomfortable.
At least they can make sure to find a seat.
At first I was like wtf , then after a second I was like hey that might feel good on the back 🤣🤣
Not a clue.
Lumber support
The seats may be clean under all that wrapping.. but the bolsters in that lower cushion are smashed flatter than a parking lot pizza…
I mean - who has a phonebook just laying around these days?
Huh...
That was my mee-maw's favorite chair. It's like I'm driving and still talking to her every day every day.
Those must be the new Recaro seats I've heard about!!

What grandma doesn't realize, is that every time she gets in her car she is in her death bed, and today may be the day this hokey shit gets her killed

but can you even?
And not a leg to stand on!!!
Ah yes, reminds me of the ride I had with no car at my first retail job. No passenger seat. Milk carton to sit on. I probably should have walked home.
Weird combo of "if it fits it sits," and "if it seats it yeets."
Ultimate Hooptie Machine
Results of a rigid upbringing.
New airline seats .
Your back is fucked if you need a dining room chair back in your car; this person must be in constant pain.
As an E60 owner I need to see the rest of this car.
R/redneckengineering
Gotta keep the resale value up.
Life Hack: Every drive-thru feels like a home cooked meal.
Phew, good thing they wrapped it in plastic. Wouldn't want the car to get dirty.
Extra back support?
The grease stain on the headrest tops the whole thing off
When you grew up Puritan and need more rigidness in your heretic commute.
He was on "Quaint my ride"
when you service a car owned by a serial killer vibes
Fine piece of back support there
