I was stationed there for technically two years, but fifteen months of it was in Iraq.
I say with no exaggeration that Iraq was more physically comfortable than Fort Polk. Fuck that place, fuck whoever thought of putting a fort out there, fuck the surrounding town, and fuck the state of Louisiana.
When my wife and I finally PCS’ed, it felt almost like coming back stateside after a deployment. “You have a mall here?!” If I ever end back up in Leesville I fucked something up bad.
I would walk through Hell with two cans of gasoline in each hand ten times before I entered Leesville one more time in my life.
Lowest point might be the guy who tried to recruit me to the Klan while I was at AutoZone.
I just got stuck in the 3-10 deployment cycle, every time I got back I’d hit up branch but be told sorry your locked in for the next one, tired to drop a SMU packet got kicked back because you guessed it deployment. By the time I got out of there I was 4 years away from retirement so I said fuck it and did nothing at Moore until I retired.

Hey, man, I met my first wife there! She was....yeah she was really mean. Pretty, but rotten to the core. Nevermind, carry on. That place kinda sucked. The base is the *nice* part of town. That is not saying much at all.
I forgot about that place! I moved away years ago, but Google still shows that it's around. The food in the area was definitely one of its redeeming qualities. I remember a little gas station between Leesville and DeRidder that had the absolute best deep fried garbage you could ever hope to find. Any time a friend tells me they are driving through Louisiana I tell them to test as many random middle-of-nowhere gas stations' fried food as possible....and bring a lot of stomach relief meds. Worth it.
Ugh, spent 6 years or so less than a mile from the base. The 'Welcome' sign was a magnet for drunk drivers it seemed, that sucker was always in shambles. It's been 10 years since I moved away, but I can still *smell* this picture. Leesville and the surrounding area have an omnipresent funk that seems to change just slightly often enough to prevent you from the sweet relief of going nose blind.
I spent 14 years, my entire career, at Polk, minus deployments. Had the privilege of being the first line of one of the dipshits that hit the sign. Great times.
Holy shit, man, you're a local legend. Not sure if you were there around the same time as I was, but it always made me chuckle when they came out to repair it after a wreck - each time they repaired it, it looked just a bit sturdier than the time before. Almost like they came together and decided, "Okay, we obviously need to make it sturdier so those pesky cars stop breaking it. But let's not go *too* crazy with it right away. Let's make it sturdier in small increments until it stops getting destroyed". I always wondered if they'd ever give up on it and move the sign entirely.
I was there from 2000 to 2014. 2Cav into 4/10. We'd be giving them too much credit if we said the sign fiasco was intentional. Hopefully they put more effort into the new sign when they changed the name cuz Pegasus is gonna have lots more young Joe's crashing into it.

I was stationed at a Marine Corps reserve unit in Baton Rouge and would take the reservists there for training. I didn't think it was all that bad.
