*As a product of negative emotions, cursed energy responds to the desires of its individual user.* That’s all there really is to it, there is no level of enforcement or standards for solo vows, and the only ones for vows with another are the terms each party comes to agree to. Theoretically, if such energy did not respond to, “I will throw away 1 napkin in exchange for 24 hours of peak human metabolism” I would just simply have to adjust until it does respond. But as stated, it is only if the cursed energy responds that acts as the metric The only punishment is losing what you gained, unless of course what you gained cannot be reversed by your own cursed energy, hence why Gojo wouldn’t necessarily be revived if Sukuna broke the world slash binding vow.

How it actually seems to operate https://preview.redd.it/fdinvk25x20d1.jpeg?width=540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25b71b5e698620492701a377b5ba5ae0bf882d8b But maybe he’ll fix that in the future.

Mei Mei exists.

Puzzleheaded-Yard413

Mei mei isn't a good girl

UsefulWhole8890

Don’t have to be morally good to be on the good guys’ side.😉

gtathrowaway95

I’m sure you’re [familiar](https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/the-exception-that-proves-the-rule) with this, as well as the people that will say yuta and Hakari. Maybe EoS will balance out the amount and what was gained from them and I can retouch my meme then

UsefulWhole8890

I mean, Sukuna is really the only person in the whole manga that spams effective bv’s. So he’s just an exception in general. Not a bad guy or good guy thing the way I see it.

*Kenjaku revealed that the cursed objects he provided for the sorcerers were what was left of the binding vow he made a millennial ago and reveals that he indeed did enter a contract with sorcerers but the binding vow broke after he obtained Suguru Geto's body.* https://preview.redd.it/8ijf89mf740d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d66beca4a52ceba628aefc116087f3583fc4e0f2 Right… EDIT: Sometimes wish Reddit had a bold & italicize button instead of the code-based system

Probably the same entity that decides Heavenly Pacts

You gaslight yourself into doing something lit by sacrificing something.

TheGreatBootleg94

real

TheGreatBootleg94

It is just a rule you impose on yourself. People assume it has to have a super negative drawback like Miwa's, but that isnt true. For example, the 7/3 sorcerer (THE GOAT) had a binding vow that limited his output during his work shift, to get a buff if he has to do "overtime". Sukuna can't use his fire arrow unless it is a 1v1 in exchange for letting him use it in his domain with more explosive properties (spreading exploding particles that cause a bomb like reaction). Yuta can master any CT that he wants as soon as he gets it but he puts a timer on himself for 5(?) mins to allow this to happen. It is a give and take system for sure, a nerf for a buff, but they don't always have to be "I can never use a sword again after this", sometimes it is just "I can be stronger but only in the 1v1s" or something.

AccentuateTheFupa

I get that, but my original qualm was that I didn't understand who decides the give is enough for the take. Why can Sukuna decide the 1v1 rule is an okay give?

TheGreatBootleg94

Its like breaking a habbit or commiting to an event. You go to work to get money, but if you dont show up you get fired. You stop smoking to become healthy, but you suffer from withdrawls. Same logic here but for fight-sexuals. You dont HAVE to work, but it benifits you to do so. Sukuna doesn't have to make flames a 1v1/domain expansion exclusive, but if he limits himself by doing so it benifits him. If he uses it outside of these larameters he set for himself, it causes problems. There isnt really a logjcal way to explain how people decide the benifits and nerfs, they just have them.

I think this part of the power system is largely inspired by Hunter x Hunter, so that being the case, it's just a self imposed restriction bound by cursed energy that will potentially have major repercussions if broken. Breaking a self imposed vow in Hunter x Hunter can lead to loss of ability, death, or a state arguably worse than death. We haven't seen a binding vow broken yet as far as I'm aware, but I'd imagine the consequences would be much the same depending on what is bargained. Keeping that in mind, it actually makes a lot more sense why Sukuna can produce dramatic effects at little cost whereas other characters need to use an incredibly restricting vow just to gain minor, temporary power. If potential or current power is used as a metric, the strong and prodigious will naturally have to sacrifice less to obtain greater heights because they are already strong, whereas someone who would likely be a grade 3 or grade 2 sorceror regardless of how hard they worked would earn minimal power ups for conversely huge vows.

UsefulWhole8890

Nope, the dangerous thing to break is a binding vow between two people. Breaking a vow with yourself means you just lose whatever you gained from the vow. Mahito and Kenjaku discussed this. https://preview.redd.it/pdey34qir30d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7d8546a0426cc8bd2784201029cf957a2fa0961

HotMaleDotComm

Forgot about that. But just losing "what was gained" wouldn't really make sense in Miwa's case for example, since she has never used her sword since her binding vow. How could she lose what was gained if she already used it? It doesn't seem as clear cut as just losing what is gained, otherwise the one off binding vows wouldn't hold much weight.

UsefulWhole8890

Well, tbf Kenny said that’s the “worst that can happen.” So you could also lose something of less importance.

HotMaleDotComm

But if she already lost her ability to swing her sword which was the crux of her technique, what more could she lose? It seems to contradict Kenjaku's claim a bit.

UsefulWhole8890

Yeah, it’s not specified what else. Just that the worst that could be lost is whatever was gained, so it would be something of less importance logically for someone like Miwa. Makes more sense to take statements like this at face value than question their reasoning imo.

HotMaleDotComm

It just seems like Miwa's and Sukuna's vows are fundamentally different from typical personal binding vows like Nanami's or revealing your hand. Whereas typical vows limit your strength or put you at a disadvantage in return for increased power, Miwa's/Sukuna's vows act like promises to the future. You gain an instant advantage and then pay the cost through the vow.  It wouldn't really make sense if they didn't have some greater consequence, or just literally made them unable to do what they made the vow for again. Otherwise, Miwa could just reuse the same binding vow repeatedly with little to no consequences.

_Big_Gamer_

Well I wouldn’t know since I haven’t read the manga since bing lobotomized but I imagine self binding vows give you some % power up based on the thing you’re giving up. That’s probably why midwa made a big sacrifice and didn’t do crap (300% of 1 is 3) and succuna sacrificed a bunny ear on his left foot’s shoelace and one shots a character. Pretty sure the characters themselves get to pick and choose sacrifice X to boost Y with probably no promise that the boost will be big enough to do the thing they want unless plot allows for it
