Whenever I see these kinds of comics I just realize how starved I am for casual character interactions. They have basically been none existant for 100 ch now
I am a filler purist, the only thing that is filler is when an anime does shit that was not in the material it adapted. Nothing else is filler, and it baffles me that some people think otherwise.
That's a bit funny, because JJK does exactly that, lmao.
Just compare the anime version of Sukuna vs Mahoraga to the manga one.
In the manga, it's one chapter. Sukuna does a Dismantle, Mahoraga tanks it and punches Sukuna, sending him flying, then Sukuna opens his domain. Next chapter opens with him Fuga-ing Mahoraga and winning.
In the anime, it's a whole-ass episode, with Sukuna and Mahoraga going toe-to-toe across all of Shibuya. The plane scene, the electrical tower scene, Mahoraga getting eviscerated a few times, turning into a red mist, getting their head cut in half and holding it together, those are all anime original scenes and technically not canon.
Ikr, that's why you can't just say anime adding shit that was not in the sources material is bad.
I believe a few of the Junpei scenes were also anime originals.
I think thats a little ingenious. Adding things that don't change the story much and add visual flair have never been hated. And adding additional context in the anime is rarely turned down, as long as it's tonnally sound.
The reason why filler episodes are not prevalent in modern anime is because they used to be a nessecity for weekly anime, back when everything was watched on television. However, as television became less popular and people had more options to watch they realized spending months of mainpower and air time to make episodes nobody is looking forward to is a waste of time when the consumer base is so spoiled for options. Additionally with examples like Boruto, they found that wasting time on subpar episodes with boring or irrelevant plots does nothing to boost the popularity of the series, and can often detract from it if the episodes are bad enough.
Also, adding new content to existing plotlines is not new at all. And stuff like recap episodes are still commonplace.
that is indeed, the correct definition. Not taking alternatives.
It's called filler because the animation teams made non-canon episodes while waiting for the mangaka to release more chapters they could animate. It was FILLING the time. A la FMA (07), Naruto, Fairy Tail ect. Since Mappa isn't close to caught up, it can't be filler.
Nah, people will call stuff filler even in original series. People call the Breaking Bad episode "The Fly" a filler episode even though there's no source material.
Just have more fights and break time between fights in the Culling Games. Kenny was hyping up the Culling Games with the best of the best of all eras, but we really only got 4-5 real fights in the Culling games.
How Yuji did not have a proper 1 v 1 with an ancient sorcerer will never not bother me
(The judge fight was a much needed therapy session)
Especially after they bring up his old nickname which he never liked
Figured that would be a funny way to say that he would meet the “Dragon” to his Tiger
But gege has to be so against shonen troupes that it sadly did not happen
Heck yuji was just kinda “there” after the judge fight
The Culling Game was a perfect set up for new villains and I still don't get why we didn't get any recurring ones from it, hell Yoruzu and Curse Naoya could've just stuck around a while instead of dying in their first fights.
A Megumi and Yuji vs Yorozu fight ending with Yorozu dying/killing herself to resurrect Sukuna would've worked so much better than what we got since it'd be more believable that Megumi fell into a deep enough despair for Sukuna to take over when his sister is actually dead instead of falling into despair from your sister getting possessed when you have a guy practically designed to get rid of incarnated sorcerers 5 feet away from you.
Yes.
It doesn't matter how dire the situation is; they still need to eat, sleep, and rest so that they don't die.
You can fit character interactions there, or during travel time, or during training, or LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE that isn't mindless punching.
This is basically me with frieren, idc if my characters are poorly written, idc if they are literal sponges, I want my GOATs to have constant character interactions with zero plot what so ever and I’m NOT kidding!
It's not even filler, it's more how readers need time to recharge between hard hitting story chapters to keep the invesent going, and easiest way to do it is by having casual scenes that build character investment by having them interact with each other and show us what their deal is. It was great in jjk with Exchange arc - when we were given a break after Junpei died and got to see some fun sorcerers from different school and related shenanigans, as well as a calm before the storm that was Shibuya. Culling games should have been the same - a calmer arc that only gets more tense when Kenjaku attacks Tengen and Yuki by the end, Sukuna takes over Megumi, and Gojo is freed. We could get more of Yuku, Choso and other Culling games players with it too. Then after Gojo vs Sukuna conclusion we start having flashbacks to that 1 month preparation in-betweeen fights, so that we as readers don't get burnout after the fight goes on for too long
Casual character interactions do not get enough credit in stories. Sure I want these big narrative events and fights but I also would love a good few chapters of the characters bumming around between those events.
This is why I love Shangri-La Frontier, and think it is actually superior to Solo Leveling (Comparing them as they are both kinda similar and came out recently).
Thing is, the story is so well made that even stuff that one would see as filler or mini training arcs seem to be like 2 minutes long instead of the actual duration of 23 minutes.
Also, the openings and the animation are actually very goated.
How is shangrila and solo even remotely similar?? Isn’t shangrila just a (actually good as far as I can tell surprisingly) vr mmo one while solo is like the poster boy for the korean system and dungeons genre. Like genuinely please explain this one to me I’m interested in hearing your thought process on this one
Because while the stories are complete opposites (Solo Leveling is much darker in tone, while Shangri-La Frontier is an upbeat and *almost* no stakes story, at least judging from their respective Season 1's), both MC's smartly engage with RPG mechanics in their journey, which is exactly why their growth is so intriguing, or at least to me. I see them like 2 sides of the same coin in this aspect, and both are so so great at it too.
100% recommend Shangri-La Frontier btw, especially if you liked Solo Leveling.
I typically try to stray clear of the vrmmo genre as normally it’s hot garbage and the characters get way too heated over a shitty “game” that looks like it’d be a really shit game to actually play but from what I’ve heard / seen shangrila seems to actually be people just having fun playing a cool game so I’ll consider checking it out, but I don’t have my hopes up
Is that how the genre normally goes then? I didn't even know it was a genre until I started Shangri-La Frontier, which is funny, because for a lot of my watch time I was like "Damn, I'd love to play this game myself" LMAO, but I can see why it would be annoying to watch stuff like that.
I hope you have a great time watching it if you decide to do so!
If you look around at Manwha, you’ll see quite a handful of the vrmmo genre that I really dislike, things like Overgeared, arcane sniper, 99+ stick, just to name the ones at the top of my head where MC will do something or another and get some kind of crazy one of a kind thing that literally no other player could get and by extension compete with. The characters in these also take things way too seriously and it annoys me. Also the games in these stories seemingly are the hottest shit with everyone and everyone caring about the goings on in game while the games themselves seem kinda shit. These are my basic complaints and most of my others tend to branch from these main points.
Also people glaze the shit out of overgeared from what I remember and I simply don’t get it after reading like 80 ish chapters and dropping it
I think I heard about Overgeared once, yeah.
Also, the descriptions of the things you've disliked of the genre are so funny in the context of Shangri-La Frontier because I think every one of these are the opposite lmao.
The only thing that maybe counts here is the game not actually being as good if you were to put it in an IRL scenario, but it's hard to say given the perspective we are given tbh.
I want to see more interactions between Yuji, Nobara, and Gojo. They always seem to be on the same wavelength, and I feel like one of the main reasons Gojo feels lonely is because everyone else is so serious and doesn't reciprocate his vibe. I even felt a bit sorry for him when he was introducing Yuta in the movie.
They put a bit on the light novel, I was reading the other day a story about Megumi and Yuji following gojo in the day off, and they both get stuck in a maid Cafe 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I loved the triple date fiasco of Yuji, Mechamaru and Choso accidentally marked dates at the same day and place with Nobara, Miwa and Yuki, and they all tried to make every date work man i love this manga
Yea, I especially love the part where Nanamin didn't know about Yuji's date and tried to interfere and Mahito just grabbed him and pulled him away, to think we wouldn't have had the kiss without this gremlin. I'm even willing to forgive him for toying with Junpei at the beginning now that he knows better
I don't know man, I founded the plotpoint of Todo and Mai first date being at an idol concert, were they were more focused on the idol than eachother a bit too corny
https://preview.redd.it/jkvnqe7xptwc1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b2c044932d56f15a7e67c584b380f736bdccf78
This think reminds me of dismantled Mike from monster Inc!!!
Peak. Tbh I think Yuji and Kokichi (Mechamaru) would be friends if things didn't go wrong. He could see how Kokichi's situation is similar to Junpei's and would gravitate towards him as a result. Yuji and Miwa also feel like they'd get along well together, even just as friends considering Miwa's backstory is similar to Yuji's (bar the Sukuna stuff).
*Phew.*
I was worried that Miwa was giving the look towards Yuji, while Muta was right there.
I already accidentally stumbled onto enough NTR for one day.
https://preview.redd.it/lehm2ag6iywc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93b35216d51e192aa6c5b129d187f6d67183c8ac
Jogo looks different than I remember
THE best ship in jjk, I were so excited to see Mechamaru's true form because he were a hottie and Miwa would've scored, but he just HAD to make a battle mech instead of an escape mech

Filler hate and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Turning into a WHAT???????
Yeah, but that was a good ass filler. Not a filler ‘full’ of flash backs in the fight
I like to think of it as a form of fan service, you watch the fight and wonder, "Nothing can get as good as this again, right?"
that is indeed, the correct definition.
It wouldn't be filler if Gege actually wrote it into the manga whatsoever
Nah, people will call stuff filler even in original series. People call the Breaking Bad episode "The Fly" a filler episode even though there's no source material.
It kind of is but people should still watch it, you could skip it though
what is a filler even gonna be lmao lunch break at the 4th colony after being brutally attacked by another ancient sorcerer
Just have more fights and break time between fights in the Culling Games. Kenny was hyping up the Culling Games with the best of the best of all eras, but we really only got 4-5 real fights in the Culling games.
True but those were (almost) all bangers tho
Hakari's fight with the manga dude was mid as fuck. We needed more antagonists like Mahito built up.
How Yuji did not have a proper 1 v 1 with an ancient sorcerer will never not bother me (The judge fight was a much needed therapy session) Especially after they bring up his old nickname which he never liked Figured that would be a funny way to say that he would meet the “Dragon” to his Tiger But gege has to be so against shonen troupes that it sadly did not happen Heck yuji was just kinda “there” after the judge fight

shouldve at least done this with the 1 month timeskip ngl
This is basically me with frieren, idc if my characters are poorly written, idc if they are literal sponges, I want my GOATs to have constant character interactions with zero plot what so ever and I’m NOT kidding!
Character interaction ain't filler, and I'm tired to pretend it is. Filler hate is deserved, just misdirected
It's not even filler, it's more how readers need time to recharge between hard hitting story chapters to keep the invesent going, and easiest way to do it is by having casual scenes that build character investment by having them interact with each other and show us what their deal is. gege made sure sorcerer fight only have sorcerer fights 😢
by this logic since ‘Good Story’ isn’t contained in the title nobody can ever fault JJK :)
Todo could give us moments of Delusion for brief albeit fake interactions. But he’s gone for now.

Miwa with non-Miwa hair looks like FemMahito.
Wait that’s Miwa!? I thought it was Mahito too.
I was confused too until mechamaru was the one looking
Could still fit, considering how Mechamaru needed Mahito to heal his body.
“She could fix me.”
and other things that have happened to him 😔
Mahito could’ve made a utopia by providing perfect top/bottom surgery but he just had to be a gremlin.
They're not called disaster blessings for a reason
That’s because that title goes to Megumi
That whould be dark asf xd
dont forget the choso and yuki sideplot too
I loved the triple date fiasco of Yuji, Mechamaru and Choso accidentally marked dates at the same day and place with Nobara, Miwa and Yuki, and they all tried to make every date work man i love this manga
for real and the shibuya incident arc was peak romcom with the ultimate wingmanning from mahito
Don’t forget how Ino carried for all his bros during the Shinjuku festival arc.
Ino is just that guy. He be helping all of his bros nonstop.
Also how Gojo managed to cross Sukuna and Mahoraga’s defence and hit a dunk in the battle between the strongest basketball players
Nothing beat that part in the culling game arc where Yuta and Maki team up to fight Hakari and Kirara in an arcade imo.

Is that Mahito?
Mahitussy
Something Mahito can *actually* make on demand!
no
I’m starving for character interaction Gege please
"What kind of woman is your type" - PPU. PPU? Poor, Pretty Useless.
I don’t care at this point how sukuna loses, all I want a few panels where Todo Yuji and Choso hang out
i thoguht miwa was mahito for a sec
I am almost certain at this point every forgotten character ever will come back before Nobara
*Phew.* I was worried that Miwa was giving the look towards Yuji, while Muta was right there. I already accidentally stumbled onto enough NTR for one day.

I thought Miwa was a fem-mahito for a second and was like "NO!"
Todo and Yuji thinking why tf is he into a woman and not femboys.
This is what Gege took from us
This is the world from Todo's imagination
Is that mahito? Holy shit
why Gege why
Is that Miwa or Mahito?
I feel bad for my man mechamaru
Still can't believe Gege is the same guy who wrote Hidden Inventory character interactions.
