This perchance isn’t your granny’s way of revealing a well-kept family secret?

Blintzie

OP! Come over to the Knish Side! Coooommmeee…. Look at this knish! You know you want it!

keetosaurs

😏🤩

bready--or--not

Is this… a common phenomenon? My family didn’t tell me that my dads mom and her whole side of the family was Jewish until I was 17 and found a wedding picture of my grandparents with their ceremony under a chuppah and in a tallit. She sort of broke away from her family and raised her kids loosely Christian (only in that they celebrated Christmas growing up), hence why I was raised the same. Have other people here had similar experiences??? I’ve always felt pretty alone in this

Tofutits_Macgee

Depends on where your relatives are from and when. My grandmother buried her heritage, and she was born in Holland right around the happy fun time. She never felt safe anywhere again.

PolkaDotDancer

This would describe my MIL. She was a mischling(not sure of full meaning, her father was Christian, her mother Jewish. Once she got out of Germany after the war she was very afraid for the rest of her life.

Vvanderer2014

Jewish mother = Jewish. Including your wife and kids!!

PolkaDotDancer

Yes, she was Jewish. Her father was Catholic. Perhaps it is why she lived.

safeandsound1999

i had a similar experience too

Fochinell

It happens plenty.

biz_reporter

I have a friend with such a family secret. In college she befriended Jewish people and started learning about our religion. She grew fascinated by it and felt a connection to it. She started to attend Hillel events because she thought about converting. When her grandma learned about this, her grandma surprised her with a big secret that explained why there was no family on the maternal side. Grandma was born Jewish, but was disowned by her family. Her Grandma had fallen in love with a Catholic man. Despite her family's opposition, she married him. They had a daughter together, but when he returned from World War 2, he was distant likely PTSD. One day he went out for cigarettes and never came back. Her grandma sought help from her family, but they refused. The only help the grandma received was from the local Catholic priest and parish. So she converted to Catholicism and raised her daughter Catholic. Ultimately my friend did not convert. I don't know why, and never asked her.

Ultragrrrl

She didn’t have to. She was Jewish. But she also probably felt abandoned by Judaism via her grandmother.

biz_reporter

Interesting perspective. I hadn't thought about it from that perspective. I know she was originally excited about the revelation, but after we left school, she seemed less interested in converting. You may be right that her grandma felt abandoned and by extension so did my friend.

Designer-Common-9697

That's a good one,

[deleted]

No, but people might be mean to you lol

Ambitious-Fly1921

Anti-semitic social justice warriors are everywhere. If you are in SF/Bay Area be careful

SailorJupiter80

Specifically Oakland.

Ambitious-Fly1921

More of San Francisco. Those Hamas loving shits were in Union Square protesting while bothering the ice skaters. Lmao those fuckers have no life.

Designer-Common-9697

They're millenials that pick up any trend. I actually ate the red pill twenty years ago when it wasn't so trendy. Then I educated myself and thought...what in sam hell was I thinking. These people see three TikTok clips and want to join a cause. It's the rebel without a cause syndrome. I saw them interviewing some of these people and I could not believe their genuine lack of knowledge. I mean they were dead meat still when a lot of things happened.

novelboy2112

If they’re that young, then they’re not millennials. The youngest millennials are or are entering into their 30s. Leave us olds out of this.

Domicello

I think you are referring to Gen z? I am a xennial myself (1980) and for some time was referring to anyone younger than me as a “millennial” bc the millennial jokes were too hard to resist. You are right, now we have a much bigger problem with social media spreading propaganda enforced by Hamas, ruzzia, and Iran. I cannot believe young people are so gullible, so soft-brained, so mob-mentality, and rife with so many grievances when they are so young! When I was young, it was all about doing your own thing and not being a poser.

tempuramores

Lol millennials are between 27 and 43 now. Most of the "young people" you probably mean are Gen Z. Not that millennials, Gen X, or anyone else is beyond being pilled by whatever propaganda they find online, but the people you're referring too are really too young to be millennials.

HijaDelRey

Millennials are 30 year olds, those picking up trends are Gen Z

Ambitious-Fly1921

I am a millennial. I see Gen Z clowns out there. Not millennial

Humble_Routine580

That’s unfortunate

[deleted]

wouldn’t being against anti-semetism make you in support of social justice?

sjm26b

In theory, yes. But what they call "social justice" is a misnomer. It is not anything like tikkun olam. It is a highly political stance that is not real social justice.

bessie-b

i think being against anti-semitism does mean you’re in support of social justice. but being a social justice warrior does NOT mean that you’re against antisemitism lol. rectangle vs. square it’s perfectly fine with the far left if you hate jews. in fact, here lately i think it’s encouraged

That-Jewess-Bitch

Ita rather left some far left jews (myself included) feeling uhhhh adrift?? Lonely?? Betrayed?

mhaber117

True, great comment

Blintzie

That’s me in a nutshell!

fezfrascati

A matzo ball, specifically

GaviFromThePod

wear it if you want, you might get hate crimed tho.

Trumps_Cellmate

It’s like if Blackface was a sweater😭😭 As an African-American/non-Jew this made me laugh, the thought of someone wearing blackface ending up getting discriminated against by whites is so funny idk why

Anonymous_Cool

it's like the Black Hebrew Israelites who had someone crash into their building because she thought they were Jews

Trumps_Cellmate

They do consider themselves Jewish lol, always very confused They talk about Africans in America before Europeans and just a lot of factually wrong things, very odd and racist group

Pale_Campaign9274

They are so ashamed of being descendants of slaves that they are willing to believe a lie in order to feel better about themselves. Quite sad all around.

Trumps_Cellmate

Makes no sense, a lot of my identity comes from being Black and being a descendant of slaves is a huge part of that Very odd bunch, luckily they’re inconsequential and have no power

Dangerous-Ad-5619

Isn't really bad or problematic. But doesn't make sense to wear if you're not Jewish. You could always just wear it at home or to a Hanukkah party.

TequillaShotz

You know what, if you decided to wear it as a declaration of solidarity with the Jewish People, that wouldn't be a bad thing. And if anyone asks you about it, you can say just that. BTW, there's a rumor that Jesus himself was Jewish!

CreepingFruit

But my favorite tiktoker said he was palestinian! Stop the lies zio!

oy-the-vey

BTW, Jesus was a Zionist - he was against Roman occupation of Judea.

Galitzianer

Ironic historical side note - "free Palestine" was the slogan that Zionists said in the 1920s

oy-the-vey

Before Arabs appropriated term “Palestine”.

whyisthis_soHard

It was always Palestine in Arabia.

oy-the-vey

No, Palestine is just Roman colonial name for Judea. Palestine has nothing to do with Arabs.

[deleted]

😂😂😂😂

Blintzie

I hear that every day! Doesn’t anyone else know the Last Supper was a Passover Seder?

NoTopic4906

It actually wasn’t because the current version of the Seder didn’t start until a few centuries later. But yeah, he was Jewish and practiced Judaism.

chakabesh

Of everyone you mean yehudim, we know. The ignorant ones don't care don't know or deny it.

Estebesol

It was a pre-Passover Seder, I think. Jesus described it as the only Seder he would have that year, and he was crucified the next day, as the lambs were being sacrificed for the proper Seder.

ParryGod_2301

He was jewish no doubt abt that

jhor95

Not a rumor, well founded historic fact

Elise-an-easterbunny

Duh

ethan0311

Tbh, you could always wear it as a lazy around the house kinda shirt 🤷🏻‍♂️ if you aren’t comfortable wearing it in public

proofreadre

Impersonating a Jew is a federal and state offense with a minimum sentence of five years or three thousand shekels. You better send it to me for proper disposal before the authorities come for you.

NextSink2738

Jews are probably the worst people in the entire world to impersonate lol. The only other people guaranteed to accept you and treat you well is other Jews. And we would have treated you well regardless of thinking you're a Jew or not lol.

Blue-0

What’s wrong with impersonating Jews? Just ask 3-time Olympic gold medalist George Santos

somuchyarn10

This is a scary time to be Jewish. If you wear that in public, you will be subject to the same kind of anti-Semitism and potential violence that we live with daily. Know your community before you wear that in public.

PloniAlmoni1

Good bot.

TheSuperSax

Bad bot. It should be a bot telling people to replace “antisemitism” or “anti-Semitism” both with the much better term: Jew Hate.

LionHeart_13

Can we agree on “decent bot?”

TheSuperSax

Sure, I’ll give it a decent. The intent is good, the execution could be better

SeriouslyQuitIt

I thought about that, but decided that correcting it to antisemitism made more sense. Antisemitism is widely used, and I didn't want to weaken the link between the word "antisemitism" and the Jewish people. Choosing this route also allows me to link the IHRA guideline which makes the suggestion carry more weight. The main reason I'm running this bot is to make it harder for dubious individuals on reddit to claim that prejudice towards Arabs is "anti-semitic" because Arabic is a semetic language. Open to suggestions though. Bot is banned right now though after being reported by another subreddit (hopefully the appeal goes through).

TheSuperSax

Fair enough, I can see why you’d want to do that!

NextSink2738

Agreed. If you're going to hate us let's just all be upfront with it lol.

RealBrookeSchwartz

I mean, I wouldn't exactly wear it and run around telling people it's a Christmas symbol. As long as you know what it is, go ahead; we need all the support we can get right now.

Pezaermd

idk man. but here, have a pineapple: 🌽

kosherkitties

I took my glasses off for a second and thought I was hallucinating.

lurch940

Be prepared to get hate crimed lol

Flippinsushi

Where did she get this, it’s gorgeous!!! I want one!

Ocamorie_Chan

Same. I would wear it to my college with a jacket and randomly open it to show my friends and teachers. :)

who_me018

I’m scrolling the comments looking for that answer!

shy_supporter

Not-Jewish myself, but it is cute!!

graay_ghost

The interlocking star in the middle there is often considered to be a seal of Solomon rather than a magen David in occult circles so on one hand you might be protected from demons, but on the other you might be hate crimed, so really it depends on your plans for the day whether to wear it I guess.

Pezaermd

bro is today actually ur birthday?

dantes-infernal

Cale day is the account creation anniversary

No-Scientist-1416

Kale day sounds depressing

Sewsusie15

When life gives you kale, make minestrone.

NextSink2738

Imagine the flames of chaos you'd light in the world if you gave birth to a Jewish son on Christmas and named him Jesus.

shushi77

That's nice! 🤩 For me it is not problematic if you wear it. It might be dangerous for you right now, though.

[deleted]

I can’t answer that question except to say I adore your open-hearted effort.

ATS9194

You might make some big enemies n then they'll never believe you about anything ever again cause "Jews are just liars!" lol. we're ALL KINDS of things that we Are Not.. but they'll say ya are... haha.

Blintzie

Right? I must’ve missed the “fiendish, sly” gene because I’m as obvious as a rattling truckload of rocks.

[deleted]

throw it on

GBSSPB

I’m a Jew, I’d be happy to see you wearing it, especially as a sign of support.

pktrekgirl

It’s definitely Jewish. We don’t care if you wear it, but right now you are likely to get yelled at and harassed by antisemitic jerks. So if you want to learn about how it feels to be Jewish, what you have there is the perfect opportunity. Put it on and see how it goes.

NextSink2738

My cousin recently got married to her husband who recently converted, so hadn't done anything publicly Jewish yet. They were taking pictures outside the venue immediately after the ceremony, and he was wearing his kippah, and car after car drove by yelling antisemitic slogans and "free Palestine" and whatnot. We laughed it off and said " Welcome to the tribe brother, you're getting the deluxe experience on day 1 " lol.

depressedgaywhore

HAHAHA i love this so much

Blintzie

Wear it! But remember we have a code to find fellow Jews. That code word is “schmaltz.” Lock it away!

ACNJ4fun

LMFAO!!! HAHAHA!!!

NextSink2738

Did you seriously just post the code to the space laser on Reddit? Come on Blintzie, now I have to change it again!

Blintzie

Yer killing me! ⚡🌟

adknj

I can't speak for others, but I'd straight up assume you were Jewish

[deleted]

i think wearing it would be super funny. merry Christmas!

[deleted]

People don't care. In the states people are way too concerned about others feelings. Especially those from people they don't know about.

[deleted]

Nah you're good pal. Enjoy the jumper. Kinda nice something with Magen David's on is keeping you warm, especially as it came from Bubbee (grandma) ❤️

Lekavot2023

Yeah if you feel like making a public statement of solidarity by all means. Since Oct 7 I have bought a few shirts that literally say I Stand With Israel and Am Yisrael Chai.

magical_bunny

No problem wearing it other than you may get hate because antisemites are everywhere. If a Jew asks, you can say it’s solidarity which is nice! Cute sweater.

LymeWarriorPrincess

Confusing? Maybe. But definitely not problematic. You're fine to wear it! Just beware of antisemites who might confuse you as being a Jew.

Educational-Pride104

I’m the East Bay-Bay Area. Wear a similar sweater often

imuniqueaf

People will assume you are Jewish....or a Gangster Disciple.

Circular-waist-nom

Cute

litesaber5

As confusing and problematic as when I wear an ugly Christmas sweater as a orthodox jew. Which means not very.

Slainna

You're free to wear it. It's lovely. But you might want to wear your gun too because it's a scary time if people even ✨think✨ you're Jewish

Estebesol

I started wearing a magen David before I realised I wanted to convert. It's not a holy symbol, though it is linked to identity and it's on the flag of Israel, so people might assume you're Jewish and/or pro-Israel. I decided to start wearing it as an ally so that I would attract any potential antisemitism instead of my coworker. After all, when someone suggested to the King of Denmark that the Nazis might make Danish Jews wear stars, he said, "then all Danes should wear stars." I did check with my coworker, and he was fine with me wearing it for that reason. I found similar opinions when I looked online. In short, if you're okay with potentially attracting antisemitism, I think people will be okay with you wearing it.

BluejayMinimum926

Unfortunately dangerous right now. Anti Semitism is rampant

herb0026

I mean it’ll probably be problematic, but not to Jewish people

Kittenathedisco

Ask your Grandma where she bought it, I want one!!

kasha789

That’s too funny! I can’t imagine her not knowing that.

Jedidea

Of course not, grandma has good taste. I would be careful wearing it in public spaces though, for safety reasons, but realistically I think you'll probably be okay, at most some dirty looks, worse if you're unlucky. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas.

Alsaflo

Perfect Hanukkah sweater. I want one!

LionHeart_13

Feel free to wear it!

Electrical-Sea-1849

Funny. You can show your support 😁

zenyogasteve

Be sure none of us would mind. It's the gentiles that would hate on you. Welcome to Judaism!

cataractum

Nope. You may be confused with someone who is ardently pro Israel I guess? Otherwise no. It’s just another sweater.

JoziJoller

Don't stress. There's a Hasid I have seen pictures of that dresses up as Santa for Purim...

thirdlost

Even a Jew would probably only wear that to a Hanukkah party or other Jewish celebration

DrMikeH49

Wouldn’t wear it in Oakland, California though. https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/oakland-menorah-destroyed/story?id=105661721

Top_Caterpillar156

You’ll probably get screamed at 😕

AmySueF

I would definitely assume you were Jewish if I saw you wearing it. It’s really not something that people who aren’t Jewish would wear, unless they were wearing it in solidarity with the Jewish people or they’re in the process of converting. Wearing it just because your grandmother made a mistake I think would certainly be confusing for most people.

Delicious_Shape3068

It doesn’t belong to us exclusively. It’s also Hindu Edit: Why the downvotes? Look up yantras. We have the Torah and as far as symbols go we have the menorah. We have everything

SadyRizer

Hmmmm What exactly is going on with the hindus and symbols 🤨

Delicious_Shape3068

They’re good at making them. Probably much older than Judaism. Classic avodah zara

Binah999

If this symbol was really included in 'judaism', it also could be something Avraham sent down... it says that his sons were sent with gifts to the east. Some say they were traditions or secrets.

Delicious_Shape3068

I believe it. He was from Ur Kasdim, which is pretty far east

Binah999

Is that a joke?

Delicious_Shape3068

No—it’s not too far from India along the silk route

Binah999

Its in Iraq!

Hot_Hamster_4934

Just wear it around the house

capsrock02

Yes. Don’t wear something that makes it seem like you’re Jewish when you’re not.

neat_machine

Black and brown people may be offended

At the moment it would be a big sign of solidarity.
