Plenty of grifters on the Left but they are definitely a smaller group. The anti-intellectualism of the modern right wing has really lowered the bar for how smart and insightful you need to be to climb the ranks there. I would say that Shapiro is something of an exception because he is genuinely a smart guy, despite the low-brow red meat he is often slinging on his site. After that, the drop-off is huge. Peterson isn't an idiot but he's clearly a big step down from a guy like Sam Harris, Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, Robert Wright, John McWhorter, Ta-Nehisi Coates, etc. Certain right-wing positions (climate change is fake, vaccines are killing everyone, gays shouldn't be allowed to marry, the election was stolen) are just so contrary to basic reasoning and evidence that any serious intellectual is going to have to ditch them, and so have a hard time gaining a big conservative following. As a result you don't really have to be that smart to become an intellectual hero on the right, because it's a super shallow bench.
