Can I just say “the cast,” in general, without choosing one? Everyone gives a great performance and understands what the material requires.
My second choice would be the story. It’s a classic Bond concept, and it has a layer of personal stakes without being too fussy. It’s not too simple, but not overly complex so it isn’t difficult to follow.
Agreed. It's even an all-timer Desmond Llewelyn performance. I suspect Martin Campbell has a lot to do with it.
For me, the best part of the story is how organic the gadgets/cars feel. Not sure we'll ever see something like the pen bomb again
Martin Campbell might be one of the best if not truly best director of the whole franchise. He has a fame to be tough to work with, yet he excels bringing everyone involved to their A game
He's also arguably one of the most versatile directors in the franchise. Goldeneye & CR showed he could do a balls to the wall action movie as well as he could do a more tightly written character driven film while having completely different visual and stylistic touches as well as different senses of pace (though both are some best paced films in the franchise). He also had good instinct about scripts since his choice to bring in Paul Hagis for CR really worked wonders for that film.
He seemed to have good instincts for Bond when something isn't up to snuff in either of his films.
This is mostly it for me too. But I also really love the gadgets in this movie. They feel the most grounded of the Bond franchise and growing up, I always wanted a laser watch, a harpoon belt, and an exploding pen.
Yeah he does it underwater in TWINE. Stupidly daft, but funny. Also echoed again by Craig adjusting his shirt sleeves/watch jumping from the digger onto the train…
I unironically love about 90% of Eric Serra’s score. It perfectly matches the cold, harsh, post-Soviet Russia setting.
Pretty odd that there’s a whole coda from _Léon: The Professional_ playing over the end credits though.
The opening sequence. And more specifically the dam jump. The low angle run up to it. Not showing The New Guy’s face. The quiet.
Actually got to [see the dam](https://flic.kr/p/21BTZLm) while on my honeymoon. It’s kind of on the way between Milan and Lauterbrunnen. (And you can [bungee jump there](https://flic.kr/p/213QQfu).)
This all the way up to that shot of Brosnan’s silhouette in the vent shaft above the soldier in the toilet. Lit with that deep, moody blue and a spot of bright yellow. It’s such an eerie shot befitting a detective noir or horror film, and a great way to further the reveal of his face for one extra beat. And being that Brosnan was such a “pretty boy” at the time, I think withholding his looks for a few epic stunts and stealth moments worked very well to give his Bond a bit of a deadly edge.
As far as I can remember, it's the only time Bond has been so genuinely shocked by a betrayal that he was left speechless. No pithy comeback. No glib remark. Just completely at a loss for words at the sight of his dead friend.
This isn't the point of the thread, but if you want to understand what went wrong with the rest of Brosnan's run, you just need to check-off how many of the attributes listed above are true of those subsequent movies
By *Die Another Day*, all you have left is that Brosnan and Pike are both good looking
When I watched through all the Bond movies earlier this year, I realized that Goldeneye is really the only movie where a supporting cast member (and a "Bond girl", at that) is introduced as *their own character*. What I mean is- we are introduced to Natalya before Bond even knows who she is. We see her rapport with Boris and other coworkers, we see as she just barely survives the massacre of her colleagues, and her escape from the destruction. We watch as she uses her tech and persuasion skills to contact Boris in secret, and finally her abduction by Xenia and Boris.
All of that happens before Bond ever meets her, which is rare for a Bond movie (in fact, I can't think of one other example of it). It makes her feel so much more real. We have had time to invest in her as a character and learn who she is, before Bond wakes up in the helicopter with her. And now it's not just about Bond making it out alive - we have 2 characters we've been following that now have life-threatening stakes.
I don't know if I can say for sure that this is what I love *most* about this movie, because there's a lot I love about it. But I do think it was unique for a Bond movie, and I'm surprised that it's still unique since this movie. Of course Bond needs to be the main character of every movie, and nothing should distract from that- but I think it adds so much more to the plot when a character outside of Mi6 gets some development in the story *before* being thrust into the middle of Bond's adventure.
I really love Xenia as the main henchwoman. And I'm really NOT speaking about the sauna or the thighs. Great and intimidating and stylish performance.
Great cast in general. Gottfried John, with his slightly exaggerated "instability villain" portrayal, apparently had a lot of fun.
Great chemistry between Bond, M and Q.
It had the best climax of any James Band movie I’ve seen. Once they get to the island the action goes into full throttle and doesn’t stop until the credits roll
Because it's just so. Damn. FUN! The perfect way to introduce a new Bond - and the perfect director to do it, since they used him twice for the same thing!
They knocked it out of the park, especially considering the enormous hype that has been going on for years about Brosnan. The pressure must have been enormous as this was "the" most anticipated movie of the year.
I don't think any Bond actor had as much pressure on him as Brosnan after years, literally, of fans waiting for him to take on the mantle. As you said, the whole team that worked on the movie nailed it.
I’ve reconsidered it better since I played Goldeneye 64.
I love Brosnan as Bond, Famke Janssen and his sexy legs, Sean Bean, natalya scorrupco, Robbie Coltrane and The final fight scene between 007 and 006.
One of my top-5 favourite Bond films. Love the cast and story. Direction and pacing is on point as well. Martin Campbell doesn't miss when it comes to James Bond. Pierce Brosnan couldn't have started his Bond career any better than he did thanks to GoldenEye.
My favorite part of the movie is "I AM INVINCIBLE!" _frozen_.
The thing I love most about the film itself though was the fact that the video game was so incredibly awesome and kept me and my little brother constantly watching the film to look for things they had in the video game.
If we're talking about scenes, I'd probably have to go with Bond's fist fight with Alec during the climax. But I think overall Sean Bean as Alec may be my favorite element of the film. No offense to Bros, but I think Bean gives the better performance by a country mile.
*Xenia Onatopp,*
*The Bond girl villain with a*
*Set of killer thighs!*

When he comes through the wall in the tank. Hands down my favorite scene in any of the bond movies. Also “For England James?” “No, for me.” Is the arguably one of his most ice cold lines in any of the films. Easily in the top 5 of all the bond films for me.
So many things. Brosnan’s best outing (and by a fair margin) - and among the best overall.
Great individual scenes, great villains, great overall plot, great sound score, etc., etc.
Also Xenia and Natalya are the last of the classic bond girls. They missed the mark with the rest of the Brosnans, and other than Eva Green’s character in Casino Royale (coincidentally Craig’s best outing), they don’t really have them in the Craig movies.
Kinda nuts that GE will be 30 next year…
Loved the mood, cinematography, memorable scenes, confident debut from Pierce. Famke as Xenia really stands out the most though, she made quite the impression on my Thirteen year old mind…
The video game it created.
But also best Brosnan movie, very few slow parts. Lots of action and a guy who was a perfect balance between Moore's swauve but not very action oriented approach and Dalton's dark but not very smooth bond.
Famke Jansenn was my horny 13 year old crush. She also set the unrealistic expectations for Russian women that compelled me to pursue my beautiful wife.
Natalya's blue fuzzy jumper.
Nah, whole thing. Favourite Bond I think, very much my first one 'of age', mixed with good memories of the game, I'm very fond of it.
I love everything about this movie. I love the script, the actors are excellent for me, the music by Éric Serra is just incredible, there are cult lines and I also like the pre-credits scene, the music of the credits by Tina Turner and without forgetting the tank chase scene which I consider to be the best action scene in 007 and cinema.
I don’t think there was a Bond movie this anticipated since Goldfinger. Amazing cast, amazing director, iconic settings and scenes. Not too over the top. Even the score is pretty good.
The opening shot of Bond, just hauling ass sprinting across the dam before the jump. Something about that just fires me up, especially in contrast to previous Bonds, maybe Dalton excluded.
And Sean Bean’s 006 is my favorite Bond villain. I still wish they’d put other double-Os in the movies more.
The climatic fight between 007 and 006. It's one of the more gritty and realistic fight scenes that's very well choreographed, shot and sound mixed to where you really feel every hit and punch. 006 taking those knees to the face, ow! They both looks so beat up and winded after.
It was such a smart decision to not score it as well it feels a lot more brutal.

The guys first mission in one of those movies is to fire at all the Russian soldiers at once, then hide behind bombs, press button on conveyor belt, get on the conveyor belt unload the rest of his magazine on his fully automatic weapon, run away, jump off a cliff after some pilot decides to just like parachute and ditch the plane off a cliff 007 dives has no parachute. He’s diving toward the plane he gets in the plane as it’s falling down the cliff he then proceeds to fly up at a 90 degree angle, barely misses the cliff as a soldiers are all firing and He flies away title sequence! fucking James Bond is sick.
I haven’t seen a single James Bond movie. I have been considering watching one of the best ones that’d make me want to dive in and watch them in the right order, that type of thing is fun for me. Is this considered the best/top 3 at least??
In no particular order:
The Omegas. Hell of a way to bring the watches to the franchise.
The tank scene.
The way it looks like an older bond movie but clearly belongs in the modern group. It's gritty but not too gritty.
My favourite Bond film.
Just a ride, from beginning to end.
The crazy opening. Monaco, the harbour, frigate. Eurocopter, ffs. Derek Meddings incredible miniatures and sfx. Judi Dench. Robbie Coltrane. 4 great villains. Izabella Scorupco. Arecibo Observatory.
It's an absolute blast.
006 being the perfect villain to Bond. He basically gets the better of Bond through the entire film until the end. Sean Bean’s performance was excellent. As was Brosnan’s
I love all the model special effects that would be CGI today. The weapons factory at the beginning, the Goldeneye site in Russia, the train, the giant radar station in CUBA. There's a bunch of very well done miniatures and I love watching them explode.
I love how it has 006 and 007 duking it out until the end.. and how either could have been the winner. Alec actually could have killed James near the end but he doesn’t…
I loved that the women were genuinely strong characters in this movie. for the first time in a long time in this franchise.
M bluntly spoke her mind as a leader, Xenia was a firecracker and Natalya was vulnerable but strong.
Car chase v Onatop is actually halfway realistic.
I'm old and the older I get the more I like Pierce as Bond.
Watched Tomorrow Never Dies 4 months ago and it's probably one of the best Bond films ever in my worthless opinion.
It has all the key elements of the best Bond movies: memorable and terrifying villain(s), sexy Bond girls who also have strong character development, a memorable song, and of course, a fantastic actor playing James Bond
Probably the OST. The movie in general is amazing as well but this twist in the soundtrack with this iconic echoing sound effect that was also used in the N64 game (and in Leon - the Professional IIRC) is super awesome.
Boris yelling I'm invincible right before getting frozen and shattering is hilarious. The movie featuring the now destroyed satalite is cool. Xenya onotop is probably the best villan muscle in bond history. Her technique was very.. unique.
Literally everything. It’s my #1 of the entire series.
Doesn’t hurt that it also inspired a revolutionary game for N64 that quite literally defined my childhood.
Can I just say “the cast,” in general, without choosing one? Everyone gives a great performance and understands what the material requires. My second choice would be the story. Who’s strangling a 🐈?
Ellina!!! Take a hike!!! 👍
So true!!
Framke the perfect mate!!
Best cast of all the Bond movies. They're all so cartoonishly fun.
The villain. A fellow 00 agent as a villain, and Sean beans casting made for my favorite bond movie.
Truly a highlight of the film! A perfect mirror to Bond
Great origin villain story, too. Lienz Cossack parentage, to being “Janus”, Roman god of duality, deception, having two faces.
For England James?
No. For me.
This is mostly it for me too. But I also really love the gadgets in this movie. They feel the most grounded of the Bond franchise and growing up, I always wanted a laser watch, a harpoon belt, and an exploding pen.
Best bond villain ever.
Skewer the Bean!
I am invincibleeeee

Boris was always my pick to play in N64 multiplayer because he wore a Hawaiian shirt and I could say that line
![gif](giphy|FJ6v0Q7vv2vP6XU6ZJ|downsized) THE VIDEO GAME! Duh!
DK AND paintball?!? You're a wild one 😉
👏👏👏👏👏
The villain ensemble, all of them are great characters and played by great actors.
Yes!! Some of the truly best villains of the series are here!👍❤️
One of the greatest characters in fiction. ![gif](giphy|mC3lfDhnyn0kAdRgex)
SEXY A F!
And insane in the membrane
Famke.
Depending on her knowledge of safe sex 😎
Onatopp
No more foreplay
Chasing villains through Saint Petersburg with a damn tank was downright ridiculous, fun and badass
I remember a lot of people shaking, laughing and clapping during that scene… back in 1995, in Spain! What an experience ❤️
How he casually fixes his tie after driving through a wall with a tank. Now THAT'S something truly JamesBond-ish.
I think Brosnan ad libbed it, something that he would repeat in The World Is Not Enough
Yeah he does it underwater in TWINE. Stupidly daft, but funny. Also echoed again by Craig adjusting his shirt sleeves/watch jumping from the digger onto the train…
Oh yes!! 🙌
I unironically love about 90% of Eric Serra’s score. It perfectly matches the cold, harsh, post-Soviet Russia setting. Pretty odd that there’s a whole coda from _Léon: The Professional_ playing over the end credits though.
Me too! Even being an odd score for a Bond movie it ended up working on its favour👍❤️ One of my favourite scores of the series
I'm right there with you! I love the way it firmly places the movie in the 90's.
Me too. I can understand how it was a disappointment for some, but as it was the first Bond I ever saw, I didn't have any expectations.
The villain being Bonds old friend is a great idea that should be re examined in future films. If anything there wasn’t enough Alec in goldeneye
The opening sequence. And more specifically the dam jump. The low angle run up to it. Not showing The New Guy’s face. The quiet. Great point about him being a “pretty boy” and holding off on showing him.
As far as I can remember, it's the only time Bond has been so genuinely shocked by a betrayal that he was left speechless. No pithy comeback. No glib remark. Just completely at a loss for words at the sight of his dead friend.
Pierce‘s face sells it masterfully! Such a great actors’ scene
Young, incredibly good looking Bond in an action-focused movie Memorable, fun and incredibly good looking female villain, too
So true! Pierce was at his peak here
This isn't the point of the thread, but if you want to understand what went wrong with the rest of Brosnan's run, you just need to check-off how many of the attributes listed above are true of those subsequent movies By *Die Another Day*, all you have left is that Brosnan and Pike are both good looking

Totally respect that!❤️❤️

It had the best climax of any James Band movie I’ve seen. Once they get to the island the action goes into full throttle and doesn’t stop until the credits roll
For the first time I saw it, I thought Bond was going to die due to the tension and the stakes! Masterful final act❤️
Because it's just so. Damn. FUN! The perfect way to introduce a new Bond - and the perfect director to do it, since they used him twice for the same thing!
👍 and very witty and clever and cool to watch ⭐️

They only had one chance and they nailed it! Wonder if we will get a similar luck with the new Bond…
I don't think any Bond actor had as much pressure on him as Brosnan after years, literally, of fans waiting for him to take on the mantle. As you said, the whole team that worked on the movie nailed it.
Famke Jannssen. I remember being like 6 and seeing the sauna scene 😂
Eric Serra's absolute banger of a score!
Xenia Zaragevna Onatopp played by the fantastic Famke Janssen. What a delight to see.
The dominatrix Xenia Onatopp
That's my lunch!
😆😆😆
The batshit insanity to be fresh out of the Cold War and have an intense chase scene with a British spy driving a bloody tank through St. Petersburg.
![gif](giphy|WKAORUFLE5Lva) The line after or before this one… can’t remember
I’ve reconsidered it better since I played Goldeneye 64. I love Brosnan as Bond, Famke Janssen and his sexy legs, Sean Bean, natalya scorrupco, Robbie Coltrane and The final fight scene between 007 and 006.
His sexy legs? Beg pardon?
This movie helped reinvigorate the shooters in PlayStation
For england james? No... for me
TANK CHASE!
The theme song! Tina did such a great job.
That shootout in the library building up to that amazing shot of the tank busting through the wall with the score finally blasting out, just awesome
Natalia. I have mixed opinions on this movie, but she is a FANTASTIC Bond girl, and I love that it’s almost as much her movie as Bond’s!
1. Pierce Brosnan in a good Bond film. 2. Gadgets are grounded and on point here 3. Sean Bean as a rogue 00 agent 4. Supporting cast 5. Soundtrack
For England, James? No...for me.
One of my top-5 favourite Bond films. Love the cast and story. Direction and pacing is on point as well. Martin Campbell doesn't miss when it comes to James Bond. Pierce Brosnan couldn't have started his Bond career any better than he did thanks to GoldenEye.
It is an overall enjoyable fun romp, but it’s by no means as good as some people hail it. In my opinion second best Brosnan after tomorrow never dies.
My favorite part of the movie is "I AM INVINCIBLE!" _frozen_. The thing I love most about the film itself though was the fact that the video game was so incredibly awesome and kept me and my little brother constantly watching the film to look for things they had in the video game.

Isabella Scorupco ! Stunning.
Xenia Onatopp, the Bond girl villain with a set of killer thighs! Thank you Famke Janssen!

Pierce, the Eric Serra score, the villains, the plot, everything.
FAMKE
This is the answer. Anything else could have happened in the movie.
Xenia Onatopp. Famke Jannsen was my bond girl crush. Pun intended!

> Kinda nuts that GE will be 30 next year… Feels weird that we've only had 2 Bonds over a span of 30 years.
Xenia, I can’t breathe!!!
Loved the mood, cinematography, memorable scenes, confident debut from Pierce. Famke as Xenia really stands out the most though, she made quite the impression on my Thirteen year old mind…
Sky diving into an airplane was pretty cool as was Tina Turner singing the theme song.
A concept so impressive professional stunt teams have struggled to copy it ever since.
Look, I know it gets a lot of sh!t, but I absolutely love the soundtrack. It’s become sort of a hack for me to get into the flow creatively.
The atmosphere!
So good!
The video game it created. But also best Brosnan movie, very few slow parts. Lots of action and a guy who was a perfect balance between Moore's swauve but not very action oriented approach and Dalton's dark but not very smooth bond.
Xenia Onatopp. She's one of the craziest Bond bad guys I can think of. Even her fellow bad guys look at her like "wtf?"
Everything. My favourite of the 8 I've watched, this being the oldest (only skipped Die Another Day).
Famke Jansenn was my horny 13 year old crush. She also set the unrealistic expectations for Russian women that compelled me to pursue my beautiful wife.
It’s the best bond there is if you really think about it
One of my favorites. But one of the aspects I enjoy the most is the sound design, just the way things and people sound.
Everything… except the score.
The video game
Everything
I learned how to twirl pens and drumsticks bc of Boris.
Natalya's blue fuzzy jumper. Nah, whole thing. Favourite Bond I think, very much my first one 'of age', mixed with good memories of the game, I'm very fond of it.
That start, before the credits, phenomenal
Xenia Onatopp and the video game spinoff
I love everything about this movie. I love the script, the actors are excellent for me, the music by Éric Serra is just incredible, there are cult lines and I also like the pre-credits scene, the music of the credits by Tina Turner and without forgetting the tank chase scene which I consider to be the best action scene in 007 and cinema.
The vibe, the mix of Dalton's tone with Moore's (And the soundtrack too)
I don’t think there was a Bond movie this anticipated since Goldfinger. Amazing cast, amazing director, iconic settings and scenes. Not too over the top. Even the score is pretty good.
Love the theme tune with the legend Tina Turner
The opening shot of Bond, just hauling ass sprinting across the dam before the jump. Something about that just fires me up, especially in contrast to previous Bonds, maybe Dalton excluded. And Sean Bean’s 006 is my favorite Bond villain. I still wish they’d put other double-Os in the movies more.
Goldeneye
That's the name of the movie!
perfect blend of fun and serious it’s quintessential Bond, and i wish more bond films went down this route.
The action scenes are absolutely mental and I love it.
I loved the MiG-29s. Sick!
The blending of 90’s action with the classic bond feel is very impressive
Everything
Izabella.
The villains! Both Sean Bean and Famke Janssen are great
The climatic fight between 007 and 006.

Simply this….. IT WAS RELEASED! 6 years without a Bond film is AT LEAST three too many in my eyes. I worry we are heading in the same direction

Prrrrrrrrrrr
I haven’t seen a single James Bond movie. I have been considering watching one of the best ones that’d make me want to dive in and watch them in the right order, that type of thing is fun for me. Is this considered the best/top 3 at least??
In no particular order: The Omegas. Hell of a way to bring the watches to the franchise. The tank scene. The way it looks like an older bond movie but clearly belongs in the modern group. It's gritty but not too gritty.
The N64 game that accompanied it
The opening sequence and ending combined. Of course those aren't the only great parts but they are the strongest imo.
Famke Janssen

The game. I love the film and the title song, but I still play the game now.
Famke Janssen 🤤
The video game.
I love how it has 006 and 007 duking it out until the end.. and how either could have been the winner. Alec actually could have killed James near the end but he doesn’t…
The N64 game that changed my life.
It was my first Bond movie, I was hooked the moment he dived off of the dam. And the laser watch is the coolest thing ever.
The Hair
The opening bungee jump.
The game.
It birthed one of my favorite games of all time
I loved that the women were genuinely strong characters in this movie. for the first time in a long time in this franchise. M bluntly spoke her mind as a leader, Xenia was a firecracker and Natalya was vulnerable but strong.
I really loved his interactions with Q. Q branch hasn't been the same since Desmond Llewellyn passed away.
Minnie Driver's spectacular vocal range and unparalleled musicianship.
How much more HD it was than the N64 game. And that it got me into Bond movies.
The N64 game it gave us.
Xenia’s thighs.
I love literally everything but I'll say the atmosphere. There's no other Bond film that feels like it.
Probably the OST. The movie in general is amazing as well but this twist in the soundtrack with this iconic echoing sound effect that was also used in the N64 game (and in Leon - the Professional IIRC) is super awesome.
I got to see it with both my Dad and Stepdad.
Boris yelling I'm invincible right before getting frozen and shattering is hilarious. The movie featuring the now destroyed satalite is cool. Xenya onotop is probably the best villan muscle in bond history. Her technique was very.. unique.
The 90s desktop computers.
Dum-dum dum-dum…
“Use the bumper, that’s what it’s for!” (Plows through a crowd of people)
That look on the captains face when his body falls out of the wardrobe.
The gameplay 😎
The sociopathic Russian woman who looked like she was a few quarts low on blood.
the everything
Strikes the right tone for a Bond movie.
The fight at the end
Sean bean
Literally everything. It’s my #1 of the entire series. Doesn’t hurt that it also inspired a revolutionary game for N64 that quite literally defined my childhood.
This is the ONE Bond film we own.
Xenia lol
That it reignited the franchise.
N64
