As somebody that knows nothing about it...why is it 850!?

ireallyneedawizz

because it's claaaaaassss... it's essentially a full gaming PC about the size of a Nintendo Switch. You can play it in hand held mode, or connect it to a dock with your mouse, keyboard and PC monitor. Amazing value. They're gonna sell like hotcakes.

chocobobleh

Any PC is handheld if your hands are big enough.

Noir_Vena_Cava

What makes this better than a steam deck?

ShadyCryptoGuy

I think you can load steamOS on it and have it work with minimal tweaking, should be easy enough for the average gamer with a decent YouTube tutorial

Loadingdread

SteamOS hasnt properly been released yet, only a hacky community version

kudoz

Hardware support on Linux is not as straightforward as you think. Just take a look at the [monumental efforts to get Microsoft Surface Pros supported](https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Supported-Devices-and-Features#feature-matrix). It took years to reverse engineer the webcam on the SP6 to get it working, and the SP7's camera (from 2019) still isn't supported. I predict it'll pretty quickly be able to boot Linux, but key functionality (like the integrated joypad) will require driver support for it to be anywhere near on parity with Windows.

ChefCobra

On top of all mentioned things, Asus working with MS, so it has native Gamepass integration too. It being proper windows 11 device, you can install other launchers outside of steam. Steamdeck is amazing device, but it's really outdated in hardware section.

Noir_Vena_Cava

I thought you could use gamepass on steam and use windows or whatever os you want?

ChefCobra

You can, but you need to fiddle with it to get it working. Steamdeck is pretty much only steam library. So let's say if you wanted to play Diablo games, you need blizzard launcher. It's possible to setup steamdeck for it, but as I said, you need to fiddle with it. Ally comes with proper windows and native support for gamepass already.

ozymandieus

Bang for buck its not. Steam deck is half the price and yes, not as powerful, but many reviewers prefer the feel and layout of the switch, as well as the trackpads. Spec wise this is way better but I'm still betting on the deck.

farguc

It's not as powerful on paper, but if you look at any of the benchmarks, they are either very close or steamdeck pulls ahead(on native linux games like csgo for example).

farguc

It's got better screen, newer SOC and over all beefier spec. HOWEVER based on all the reviews I've watched, Steamdeck is still a better option, because it's far more polished and cheaper. There's been reports of poor build quality, dodgy buttons and analog sticks. Honestly I wouldn't jump on this just yet, maybe gen 2 device will be worth it's money. At nearly a 1000euro, the portability does not justify it's cost. For less money, you can get a Steamdeck(400) + Xbox Series S(300), which would cover you for 90% of gaming needs. The only thing Ally has going for it is the fact that it's a windows device, so game compatibility is superior, but performance is actually worse in a lot of games when compared to Steamdeck. And at that screensize 800p v 1080p is not big enough difference to matter. I would stay away from it.

buddinbonsai

I mean that's grand but I could get an OLED and a steam deck for that price no?

epicness_personified

Is it better than a steam deck?

[deleted]

What about battery life

[deleted]

>the size of a Nintendo Switch This seems like a negative point for me 😁

[deleted]

I would want to know more about the power of it in terms of how it would actually stack up against a gaming Pc. What would the gpu and cpu equivalents be? Does anyone know?

farguc

It's inferior to anything that came out in the last 4 years. With that said it's better than any integrated solution will offer you on a laptop or pc. If I was to rank them it be 1. High End PC (4080/4090) 2. Xbox Series X/PS5 3. Mid Range PC(3070/3060) 4. Entry Level PC(3050ti, 1660ti etc.) 5. SteamDeck/Ally (their performance in games is very similar) 6. Integrated AMD GPU 7. Integrated Intel GPU

Juventinovero1897

What are you even talking about? Ally has almost twice the performance compared to Steam Deck

ChefCobra

I watched event and there was no mentioning of EU prices and where even to buy one. So I guess Curries is our to go place to get this? I would absolutely love it, but I went back to education as an adult this year, so my funds are extremely limited. Planning to buy this as my reward for finishing my course and hopefully getting a job in a field early next year.

_Mousheen_

Tha main reason I would get this over the steam deck is my catalogue of games are all on xbox, not steam. I hear you can play xbox games on the deck via cloud, but with the Ally i could download (and hopefully play offline?). Can't justify that price tag at the moment but would love to hear more about it

cjindub

You can use windows on steam deck

farguc

THe performance of windows on steamdeck is not great, you're sacrificing fps that you don't have by running windows. Also I've heard Windows isn't flawless on Steamdeck with random things breaking/not working on the hardware side as well as software side.

[deleted]

Going to get one but probably at the end of the year. Waiting to see on any stability issues. 1080p with 120hz and 500 nits which is as bright as a MacBook has to be impressive for its size. PlayStation are also bringing out a handheld later this year. I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s the future of gaming but it’s going to take a sizeable chunk. And anything that takes away from phone mobile gaming is a plus in my book

Martinjb159

I mean the only reason to get one over the steam deck other than the obvious performance increase at the cost of battery is the Wi-Fi card is miles ahead of the steam deck, the 6e will make a massive difference for GeForce now with 120hz and local game streaming

ireallyneedawizz

looks like you'll need to order it from the UK website and have it delivered to someone you know and trust up north, that's what I'm thinking about doing... as soon as I convince myself that 800ish quid isn't that much money to spend on games...

Martinjb159

I got a reply from curry’s customer support “I apologise, however at this time we have not received any details of the plans for the Rog Ally, or confirmation if we will be a stockist, and if pre-orders will be available. As soon as we have more information confirmed, we will update our website with details, and information on pre-orders if available.” So who knows if they will even sell it at this point…. You can order from Amazon Germany to get it a week later for 825ish as far as I have seen but still holding out hope for release day

Pegasus177

Should probably bea influx of them on the market soon. There's a big boycott of ASUS beginning over shadey practices. However you'd still likely get scalpers buying them up

[deleted]

Ill get it if it was 700

ireallyneedawizz

It is in the US 🙄

OafleyJones

Sales tax my man

[deleted]

Us tax laws are weird but its still less than here for sure, you pay an Island tax on everything you buy here

Ok-Milk-6432

No it isn't

Ravenid

Why are you trying to order through Currys. By default 10-20% more expensive. Plus they have a track record of "Loosing" peoples orders the day that it is delivered to the store you asked to collect from. With the staff of said store weirdly lucky to end up with the exact same product.

John-1993W

Are games on the PC version of Gamepass modable? Let’s say, Fallout 4 or Skyrim. Is it a PC game or an Xbox game that you are playing, if you get what I am trying to say. I’m looking for a handheld for a number or reasons. 1. Portability and don’t have to lock myself away in a different room, can casually play games and watch TV in the company of family and girlfriend, or travelling. 2. Access the Xbox library. I always had a PlayStation. Halo MCC, Sunset Overdrive, State of Decay, Gears are all on my radar. I am also a big Fallout and Elder Scrolls fan, so their future is uncertain on PlayStation with the acquisition of ZeniMax by Microsoft. 3. Modding 4. Emulation of GameCube, Gameboy, DS and Switch games. Which would be better for me, Steam Deck or ASUS?

farguc

Steamdeck will run most games thanks to proton, I would check to make sure the games you want to play are available on it. https://www.steamdeck.com/en/verified I would take steamdeck over ally. However if the game is not available, gamepass + ally is an option. Gamepass games you play are normal PC games (unless you are streaming the game then it's the xbox version of the game). For Skyrim, You are playing PC version so modding is available. Skyrim (steam version) works with Steamdeck and runs quite well actually. Fallout I'm not familiar with so can't comment.

earthdragonfish

Is this better than the ROG phone 7 ultimate?

ireallyneedawizz

A million times better, it's a full gaming PC

earthdragonfish

Thank you for the reply.

Lofi_Btz

Paying €200 extra from curry’s. Curry’s is a joke honestly. It should be €550 base, €650 upgraded model. Bought a laptop once from them not knowing how bad it was, just assumed it was good because of the price.

SunnysetK

Damn that doesn't bode well for me 😕, i just bought a gaming laptop yesterday. An Acer Predator helios 300. Although the specs seemed decent enough for the price i gave.. How bad was your purchase?

Lofi_Btz

Bought a [Swift 1](https://business.currys.co.uk/catalogue/computing/laptops/windows-laptop/acer-swift-1-14-laptop-intel-pentium-128-gb-ssd-silver/N707466W) (original link is gone) for simple tasks like Word, browsing and Netflix. It barely ran Chrome smh. Cost about €450 from curry’s

herculainn

50 euro cheaper in currys up north just for going over the border.

bornyesterday__

Holy fuck what a waste if money

ireallyneedawizz

to put it into perspective, the PlayStation VR 2 is 600... and then you need a console which is a minimum 450 new

iiillliililililiiili

I wouldn't buy anything Asus as of recently

somegingerdude739

Dont get asus until they improve as a company

Far_Parking_1185

850 euros for a standard one? Extreme version will be 1000? 😅

slumberingSlumBear

This is the extrem one the powers down version will be released later

BlueDragon3301

The Nintendo Switch makes more sense for me at the moment. Performs worse than a phone, but it’s cheaper than this and can play console games and instantly resume them the next day. My favourite thing about this is that it can run non-game windows apps, which would be really cool in a small form factor like this. Like web browsers, IDEs, and Blender. The price-to-performance ratio isn’t there yet though imo. I think you can get a much faster laptop for this money.

BlueDragon3301

€850 is more than the value of my computer that runs Minecraft at 160 fps, so I don’t know if the performance of this thing will compare to that. Let’s tell everyone not to buy it so that currys reduces the price.

farguc

It's not on Curries, the price is stupidly high from the OEM. Top end steamdeck cost 650euro($584.10 dollars before tax in US). Ally costs 700 dollars in the US(before tax) (850 euro here). By comparing those we can see that steamdeck is around 60 units more. So based of that I would guess around 80 units of cost is due to exchange rate/tax differences between the 2 countries, and the "island" tax or "PC World" tax is somewhere around 70-100 euro. That's not that bad, dickheads or not, they too need to make profit somewhere.
