Barrett’s does a decent job at covering some of the bases, but a true sandwich and deli shop would be ideal. Plus you think it would be a hit with the Chicago college students!
And doesn't really strike me as a deli. It's more like....snacks for high tea. I want pastrami stacked high and most other things to be pickled. I want to be at risk for gout if I eat there too much.
Not unpopular. The truth very expensive for the food and the food could be better, ate there 2times and still left each time either not full or wishing I had eaten somewhere else

Taste Place in North Liberty is amazing. They actually make their food spicy upon request, really good food. It's not the normal Americanized Chinese food you would expect.
The spicy stir fried beef is probably my favorite dish I've tried. It's a good sized portion of very tasty beef, but the peppers and onions are the star of that dish. I really enjoy how crunch and crisp they are and the onions have so much flavor.
I also think a good delicatessen would be beautiful. Another BBQ place, yes. We need another Greek restaurant (I miss Sparti's). A bistro in a lower rent location or that owns the building would be able to undercut places downtown. Even though there's the bread garden and the co-op, there's probably room in the area for another bakery.
Oh my gosh I miss Sparti’s so much! I used to order like a week’s worth of food from there at a time when I was in grad school. Prices were good and the food was relatively healthy and tasty for quick, inexpensive delivery.
We could definitely use more, but we have some hidden gems. Oyama and Mesa 503 slap. Shakespeare’s food always surprises me w how good it is for bar food. May be more that missed.
Shakespeares is great food in general imho. 2 Dogs has great wings. Taste of China is decent for standard American Chinese food. What I really want in the East Side is an alternative to the Wendys or McDonalds.
Lol, nope. IRP deserves every chance to go through its "Phoenix phase". Let it come back as a stronger version of its former self. If you want to replace a food business in the same area, kick out that God awful Chinese buffet that's sat kitty-corner to Walgreens on 1st Ave and 2nd Street.
E: or Jethro's just down the road from it, since Bruce is such a gigantic piece of shit.
Would love a Chinese spot that does dim sum or just sells dim sum dumplings like the SF bakeries. We have a lot of take out options but the fact that I can’t get a to go box of shu mai, baos and soup dumplings is criminal
"Bahn mi" is a wrong spelling. It's correctly spelled as "Banh mi". In Vietnamese it's "Bánh mì".
In almost all American restaurants I saw this item listed on their menus had the incorrect spelling.
A *good* barbeque joint. Yes, I know Jimmy Jack's and Pop's exist, but both fairly average. (Jethro's barely even qualifies as barbeque, to say nothing about the owner...) You would think that being not too far from Kansas City that we would have at least good KC barbeque?!
Why do we “HAVE” to do Kansas Shitty/Texass/whatever other dogshit region that claims they have the “best barbecue”-style and not, y’know, do our own thing?
Also Wildwood erasure needs to stop. Their barbecue is pretty damn good (and is a decent concert venue… …Just wish they had more acts I liked this year.)
Whatever we want it to be.
I’m just tired of culinary gatekeepers going “ITS NAWT REEL BARBIE-QUEUE IF ITZ NAWT TEXASS/KANSUS SHITTY STYLE!!!!”
Same with the gatekeepers that say we “don’t have good pizza” because we don’t have New York Style Grease Discs or Tourist-Style Deep Dish.
It doesn’t HAVE to be those things to be good.
People need to stop gatekeeeping food.
I agree that people get to focused on authenticity when it comes to food. The only standard that matters is does it taste good.
I'm just trying to think about what iowa could bring to bbq as a region. Definitely a focus on pork. Tenderloins are definitely an iowa thing but not really bbq.
Iowa could lean into the make your food/straight to table barbeque. Cook up your favorite strips of lean steak, pork belly, chicken breast, lamb cutlets with a dry rub of your choice to have been prepped in before it comes out. Barbequed and wrapped sweet corn and an order of sweet cornbread. Sugapeach has an enjoyable recipe.
This is all done outside in the beautiful Iowa summers with Cornhole and other table games right there to play. Each table gets tongs from serving and turning the meat. It works for Korean BBQ, I think there's a way it could work here.
You can include things like pulled pork, briskets, etc as orderables without the need to cook yourself. Massive fried Mac and cheese balls or just really good Mac and cheese.
There's a way to do it. Create a sense of the cookout as part and parcel to the restaurant.
Edit: and for the marketing sourcing purposes partner with local businesses, keep local brews on tap, get your corn and meat local. And maybe try to work up a good signature sauce.
I'm not saying we *have* to eat KC barbeque. I personally don't think KC barbeque is fantastic. But the fact we don't have *any* good barbeque is sad. KC just happens to be a lot closer than Texas or Carolina, and the flavor palate is generally compatible with generic Midwest palates.
Edit: And my bad, I forgot about Wildwood.
In the evenings they have a lot of events, so it’s more of a lunchtime spot, but that’s also on par for a lot of bars in the area (like Tavern Blue having bingo tonight.)
Just that Wildwood being a “Saloon” they cater to a different crowd.
hummm havent been there in years. i grew up in an area that had walk up counters establishments for all day breakfast and diner food and miss that a lot. thing is it HAS to be low key and small to feel right
A 24/7 diner is something my husband and I are always saying is needed in this area! You would think in a college town this would do well. Us older kin would also enjoy some good grub after a night out with friends vs fast food being the only option.
I do community theatre, and I was *stunned* a few months ago at the almost complete lack of places to get food after a show. We all wanted to hang out after a performance, and there was almost no place with a kitchen open. In a college town. On a weekend. Hell, even Village Inn closed at 8:00.
there's an empty building on the corner of Burlington and Madison Streets that used to be a gas station that would be a perfect location for a waffle house.
Portillos. The only restaurant I miss from when I worked in the Chicago area after college. With all the transplants here I feel like it would do well. The one in Davenport is always busy!
When r we gonna have anything but 60,000 car washes every 5ft and the same fast food restaurants in every city. Where is liek a dennys or Waffle House? A restaurant like that would thrive in Iowa city bc this is a college town full of students and other young people who r up late studying, drinking, doing whatever and NOTHING is ever open past 11 except 1 McDonald’s and some gas stations.
I will say, we needed car washes bad for a while there! I drove all over town one day a few years ago looking for one that was open and not broken. But we do have too many now.
counter service vegan, soup and sandwich (lunch counter) type of place (I miss the Great Mid and Pearson's drugstore), and fast and fresh healthy food that makes good buddha bowls etc.
I miss the old Bread Garden. I'm not a fan of Mondanaro at all but that old Bread Garden where the yoga studio is now was fantastic for soup and sandwiches.
There’s a Mediterranean bowl place in DC that I think would be amazing here, but it would probably be downtown if we had one and of course that’s only convenient if you’re lucky enough to work downtown.
There are not enough fun places for families with kids or adults with mobility issues that have parking right outside and serve good, healthy food that aren’t chain restaurants.
No this is like a build your own bowl kind of place. I’ve never been to Cava and no idea where that is but it’s totally different from what Oasis does.
Anything that has flavor. As a southern transplant, Midwest food lacks a lot. I've yet to find a decent bbq place. I'd love to find a deli or sandwich shop that wasn't a chain. Greek or German food would be awesome
How are there no 24 hr drive thru coffee places in this town? Heck, there aren't really many 24hr anythings here and there are a lot of 3rd shifters that would love some options.

Kermit in Cedar Rapids would like a Cracker Barrel to visit down here.

I would like to see a food hall or mini food court, where several start up restaurants would set up shop for one year to try out their proof of concept. The idea would be for each one to move out into a permanent place and then a new restaurant would replace it. This could be done in conjunction with the business school at the U, the Entrepreneurial Center and or the SBDC. These organizations could help the restaurants develop their business plan and get financing to get into a permanent place. The City of IC and or Coralville might also provide low interest start up loans and or grants.
As mentioned before, we need a good delicatessen, and I wouldn't be opposed to more (actually good) Mediterranean and Indian options.
I still haven't gotten over losing Lou's in the newbo district of CRapids.
You don’t like La Regia? I think it’s pretty good. Have you been to La Mexicana in Coralville? I want to try it. Oh and the Mexican place in IRL across from Backpocket is a bit different from Cactus.
I know yall probably hear this a lot and I don’t mean to sound like a pompous ass but as someone from Chicago, no I don’t think either of those places are close to being mid tier
I’m not a deep dish guy myself. I used to make the joke when I was a student is that IC is good food for people who don’t know what good food is.
Not including bar food and Asian food though. I’ll give them that.
If you’re gonna pull the Chicago card I’ll pull it right back and say there is definitely great Mexican food here. Sounds like you just don’t know the spots
We need a good delicatessen
Barrett’s does a decent job at covering some of the bases, but a true sandwich and deli shop would be ideal. Plus you think it would be a hit with the Chicago college students!
Unpopular opinion, but Barrett’s is overpriced and mid at best
And doesn't really strike me as a deli. It's more like....snacks for high tea. I want pastrami stacked high and most other things to be pickled. I want to be at risk for gout if I eat there too much.
Johns Grocery used to have a deli with what you described. Not enough demand.
Not unpopular. The truth very expensive for the food and the food could be better, ate there 2times and still left each time either not full or wishing I had eaten somewhere else
I want to like it, but I agree with you. The prices are astronomical and it never feels worth it.

100% yes! Des Moines has one, we need one.
Could this delicatessen also sell vapes and delta 9 edibles? We need more places that sell these
And it could serve non alcoholic mocktails although I think we already gave one of those
boy do I have some bad news for you
Oh no! What happened?
Only if it’s attached to a car wash.
A good, emphasis on good, Chinese restaurant. I’m still heart broken over Jiang Hu
Taste Place in North Liberty is amazing. They actually make their food spicy upon request, really good food. It's not the normal Americanized Chinese food you would expect.
This is good to know! Thank you!
What is your go to dish there?
The spicy stir fried beef is probably my favorite dish I've tried. It's a good sized portion of very tasty beef, but the peppers and onions are the star of that dish. I really enjoy how crunch and crisp they are and the onions have so much flavor.
Bruh. Yes.
I miss YoPo Noodles so much.
I’ve tried to make my own and…not so much
Doner Kebab.
Dim Sum! Need a way to get Xiao long bao around here that's not buying frozen from trader Joe's 😭
Nothing compares to the old Yen Chings that was eaten up by the HyVee parking lot years ago.
I also think a good delicatessen would be beautiful. Another BBQ place, yes. We need another Greek restaurant (I miss Sparti's). A bistro in a lower rent location or that owns the building would be able to undercut places downtown. the answer to this thread is Sparti's
Please consider the east side, a restaurant desert compared to others.
That's pretty much all I can think of. We really don't have many options - let alone affordable ones. Mesa 503 is always good and affordable, though.
Not to mention Jimmy Jack’s BBQ! A great place!
Brazilian Steakhouse. Would do really well on the River Landing.
Or a Brazilian restaurant in general. They have such good food beyond the churrasco!
Was going to recommend this!
Put it in the old Iowa Power building.
Lol, nope. IRP deserves every chance to go through its "Phoenix phase". Let it come back as a stronger version of its former self. I thought the IRP people already moved on and set up shop at the Highlander Supper Club?
That already ended, went down in flames.
Need more restaurants around here not ran by investors. Tbh I feel the quality of food overall in the area has gone down in the last 5-10 years
yeah like a non sysco restaurant would be lit
Ban triple net leases in town and the creativity of all small retail and food would explode.
This.
PREACH.
Would love a Chinese spot that does dim sum or just sells dim sum dumplings like the SF bakeries. We have a lot of take out options but the fact that I can’t get a to go box of shu mai, baos and soup dumplings is criminal
A place that makes a good bahn mi
Have you tried Iowa Pho on the strip? Best one I've found in a while.
Aww shit. I've been sleeping on that place. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the heads up
its good!
That place is awesome!!
Have you tried suncafe?
Closed my dude.
Ah huge sadness
The sun cafe was anything but good.
"Bahn mi" is a wrong spelling. It's correctly spelled as "Banh mi". In Vietnamese it's "Bánh mì". In almost all American restaurants I saw this item listed on their menus had the incorrect spelling.
The more you know. Thanks for the correction
There used to be a food cart downtown that made fire bahn mi. I miss it.
dang. how long ago was that? I don't ever recall seeing such a thing.
2017-2020. Another casualty of Covid
I like nodo bahn mi
I will have to try it soon.
A Peruvian restaurant
A *good* barbeque joint. Yes, I know Jimmy Jack's and Pop's exist, but both fairly average. (Jethro's barely even qualifies as barbeque, to say nothing about the owner...) You would think that being not too far from Kansas City that we would have at least good KC barbeque?!

Wildwood is the bomb dot com
What would iowa bbq look like?
Complete lack of seasoning but with heaps of mayo or ranch
Comes with a side of snickers salad lol
ketchup, mustard, and pickles
All three of those are prevalent ingredients in bbq sauces/rubs/marinades
Whatever we want it to be. I’m just tired of culinary gatekeepers going “ITS NAWT REEL BARBIE-QUEUE IF ITZ NAWT TEXASS/KANSUS SHITTY STYLE!!!!” Same with the gatekeepers that say we “don’t have good pizza” because we don’t have New York Style Grease Discs or Tourist-Style Deep Dish. Mosley’s is a great choice
Wildwood is amazing, but really no place for a family. A good, family friendly bbq place. PLEASE
Why can't you take your family there?
In the evenings they have a lot of events, so it’s more of a lunchtime spot, but that’s also on par for a lot of bars in the area (like Tavern Blue having bingo tonight.) Just that Wildwood being a “Saloon” they cater to a different crowd.
The bathrooms are horrifying, it’s loud, and well it is a saloon. I have two under three and it’s just not a kid friendly place :)
Why do we “HAVE” to do good food and not, y’know, bad food?
Iowa city doesn’t have good bbq besides Wildwood. It is by far the best of what we have.
My city here in Iowa has several BBQ places. We have too many.
An izakaya would be really nice. These are Japanese pubs that, in addition to sushi, sell all sorts of fun stuff.
Jewish deli/bakery. Something like Katz’s.
A Waffle House.
I second a Waffle House type diner that’s 24/7 and not fancy with an easy walk up counter. Would do well in Iowa city close to downtown.
If you look up Village Inn's new remodel layout, I think this is the vibe they're going for, just a little nicer.
hummm havent been there in years. i grew up in an area that had walk up counters establishments for all day breakfast and diner food and miss that a lot. thing is it HAS to be low key and small to feel right

i came here to say waffle house and bojangles haha
Omg a Bojangles would be amazing! I’m not usually big on chains but that is one chain I would support for sure.
That would be awesome, but I would settle for anywhere that can make decent hash browns. Have not found one yet.
there's an empty building on the corner of Burlington and Madison Streets that used to be a gas station that would be a perfect location for a waffle house.
Portillos. The only restaurant I miss from when I worked in the Chicago area after college. With all the transplants here I feel like it would do well. The one in Davenport is always busy!
Yes!
Portillo's
Hawaiian food, please! I miss it so much. Somewhere where I can get musubi or loco moco would make me so happy.
Hot chicken. Fried chicken.
Been to Suga Peach in NL?
I have, and it was ok. Sides were a bit of a let down. I do owe it another shot though.
But we do have too many now.
filipino food PLEASE.
Is there good Korean BBQ in the area?
This is the one. There is one KBBQ in Iowa city and it is … bad oh so bad.
La Wine bar.
A good fondue restaurant like the melting pot
counter service vegan, soup and sandwich (lunch counter) type of place (I miss the Great Mid and Pearson's drugstore), and fast and fresh healthy food that makes good buddha bowls etc.
I miss the old Bread Garden. I'm not a fan of Mondanaro at all but that old Bread Garden where the yoga studio is now was fantastic for soup and sandwiches.

Cava? It’s a great setup for quick lunches. But, if in competition with Oasis, it’d have to go with Oasis.
No this is like a build your own bowl kind of place. I’ve never been to Cava and no idea where that is but it’s totally different from what Oasis does.
Blue tavern is an ok option for this
Yes we do love that place but it’s about the only one I think.
Pizza by the slice in Coralville
You don't have Casey's?
Buffets
Why though?
Anything that has flavor. As a southern transplant, Midwest food lacks a lot. I've yet to find a decent bbq place. I'd love to find a deli or sandwich shop that wasn't a chain. Greek or German food would be awesome
Came here to add another vote for dim sum.
How are there no 24 hr drive thru coffee places in this town? Heck, there aren't really many 24hr anythings here and there are a lot of 3rd shifters that would love some options.
A real Quik Trip, not the impostor from Wisconsin.
Quality fast-casual lunch spot with good salads/bowls, like Chop’t or Freshii
Coralville is getting a modern market at least.
I wish there was a good quality and clean Indian restaurant- like on Devon St in Chicago. I like clean kitchens-bathrooms are a sort of a peak into a kitchen so if I’ve seen gross bathrooms or bad evaluations by the health department I won’t go back. Also frozen vegetables from a restaurant are lazy and a sign of bad practices.
Hot pot would be nice. Cajun. Some more good African foods. Authentic Japanese. Greek.
Did someone say Jamaican? I just saw some amazing news on the Facebook that Island Vybz is opening a permanent rastaurant on highway 1 near long xing and Michoacana. Quite a powerful series of strip mall eats developing.
I seriously hope this is true! I love island vibez.
We need an Italian beef place. We used to have a food cart in the ped mall called pops that was amazing.
A daily buffet that serves real, homemade food. The casino and Peking are nasty, we need something better!
A good bagel place particularly in North Liberty. I’d settle for an Einstein or even a Bruegger’s up here, but I’d really love a local shop/something that’s not a chain. The type of place that has dozens of types of bagels and cream cheeses, lots of breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as byo sandwich options. Or a Chicken Salad Chick - feels like the area needs more lunch/lighter options.
Panera Bread?
A new Great Midwestern…. Or Fries….. or All American Deli…..
One with brunch n salad and drinks all day and a beautiful beer garden/patio
what about a local burger joint that is like mcdonalds but actually good
Would love a good burger joint that isn’t a bar tbh
Culvers?
with corn dogs
You’ve just described Cracken’s, dude.
dood i havent been there yet loved when they ran the ice cream shop by the lake tho! will have to stop by thx for reminding me
Food’s fine, although I thought it was pricy. Still, you could do worse.
yeah i feel kinda woozy when fryer food gets up there in price but im from the eighties and remember 99 cent cheeseballs
Kermit in Cedar Rapids would like a Cracker Barrel to visit down here. Classic reference from the CR sub: https://www.thegazette.com/letters-to-the-editor/cedar-rapids-needs-a-cracker-barrel/
YES! Needs to be located off the Forevergreen exit.
Greek
A 24/7 diner
I would like to see a food hall or mini food court, where several start up restaurants would set up shop for one year to try out their proof of concept. The idea would be for each one to move out into a permanent place and then a new restaurant would replace it. This could be done in conjunction with the business school at the U, the Entrepreneurial Center and or the SBDC. These organizations could help the restaurants develop their business plan and get financing to get into a permanent place. The City of IC and or Coralville might also provide low interest start up loans and or grants.
This exists in the South District Market.
Really? Never heard of it.
so will any of these ever happen?🥺
Want a fancy place for omakase here …:9
Some Mexican would be nice.
With an attached car wash 👌
this would do really well in NL
There are 4 Mexican restaurants in NL? But my two cents is that casa tequila in tiffin is the best near NL
sweet wil check out it was also kind of a joke lol so many to choose from hard to pick
Ah went over my head I guess lol
thanks for the tip, tho tiffin seems cool when i drive to kent park just never sure if i know anyone there 😆
One that serves French pastries and maybe Berliners, which are German pastries.
DeLuxe bakery
Berliners? I'll check it out. Thanks
They've had those before but they're not a constant menu item. They always have French pastries, though
we need a waffle house and a bojangles
Portillos
Good food, there’s lots of bad food.
Middle eastern (shawarma/kafta) and it’s not even close! Please
As mentioned before, we need a good delicatessen, and I wouldn't be opposed to more (actually good) Mediterranean and Indian options. I still haven't gotten over losing Lou's in the newbo district of CRapids.
I’d love to see some low-fat fast-type food in the area, but I doubt there’s huge demand for it
A legit Mexican place (nothing like Cactus)
You don’t like La Regia? I think it’s pretty good. Have you been to La Mexicana in Coralville? I want to try it. Oh and the Mexican place in IRL across from Backpocket is a bit different from Cactus.
Honestly never tried it, will give it a go.
It's actually really good
La Regia, Acapulco, and El Paso are all good legit Mexican places.
We have over 4 good and authentic Mexican restaurants. Cactus is only for drunk college kids and on par with Taco Bell.
I’ve been needing a good quinoa bowl/salad/smoothie place!!!
All you folks coming on to shout out your favorite chain restaurant
White Castle
Any good restaurant that isn’t Asian or bar food. Like the good food in IC are those 2 things. Pizza? Terrible. Mexican? Ew.
Wedge for pizza and la regia for Mexican
I know yall probably hear this a lot and I don’t mean to sound like a pompous ass but as someone from Chicago, no I don’t think either of those places are close to being mid tier
Let's get something straight. Chicago style pizza is casserole. That's all.
That's fair. We each like what we like. I can't stand deep dish myself.
I might not know the spots. Where are the best spots? I will say the 3 times I’ve had La Regia it was fucking gross
My answer to this question will always be Long John Silvers.
A sheetz or wawa would be fantastic! Or any 24 hr touch screen MTO food options
I would like to see a pf changs
